Singing: We sing a cappella (without
instruments). The songs are listed in
the bulletin and lyrics are projected on
our screen. We also have booklets with
music notation available as well. We
encourage you to join in, but do not feel
obligated; you can just sit and listen.
Lord's Supper: Communion is a part of
our worship each week. In this simple
memorial we remember Jesus’ sacrifice
on the cross and we also emphasize the
central place of the cross in our faith.
Offering: The work at Denbigh is
supported totally by the free-will
offerings of our members. Our guests
are not expected to make a donation.
Preaching: The sermon will be about
20-25 minutes long and centered in
Scripture. If our study raises questions,
please feel free to ask the minister or
one of the elders. After the sermon an
invitation will be offered for those with a
prayer request or desire for baptism. At
this time, we will stand and sing a song.
Please don’t feel uncomfortable; you
will not be singled out in any way.
Children’s Church:
At some point
during each morning assembly (usually
before the sermon) children ages 2-5
will be dismissed to a class for a special
lesson. An attended nursery is also
provided. Usually at this time, we will
take a few minutes to stand and greet
each other.
Expected of You: Participate in any way
in which you are comfortable. We do
ask you to fill out a Guest Card (at left).
We are honored that you chose to visit
with us today. We hope that you will
stay around for a few minutes after our
services so that we can become better
acquainted. We also hope that you will
come to see us as we see ourselves, a
group of people who love Jesus and are
doing our best to serve Him. Please

I have a really bad memory. How long
have I had this problem? What problem? Dad
says that as he has gotten older, he spends
much more time thinking about the hereafter…
he goes into a room and then tries to remember
what he is here after. During the Exodus, Israel
suffered from a chronically short memory. In
Exodus 15, Israel celebrates deliverance by God
through the destruction of the Egyptian army in the Red Sea. Moses
leads the original “song of Moses” in Exodus 15:1-18 and then his sister Miriam leads the women in singing and dancing before the Lord.
Her song is in Exodus 15:21, “Sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted.
The horse and its rider he has hurled into the sea.”
And here is where we see their memory problem. The next verses chronicle Israel’s tendency to grumble and complain as they make
their way toward the Promised Land.
For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water. When
they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter.
(That is why the place is called Marah.) So the people grumbled against
Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?”
Right after Israel sings praises to God for saving them by drowning the
Egyptians in the sea, they complain because they have no water. They
go from celebrating the God who used the waters to deliver them to
complaining that God didn't have enough water to give them a drink!
And this is not just soon after the Red Sea— this is the very next
verse! They go from praising to complaining in just one verse!
How could they be so forgetful? If God can drown their enemies,
do they not believe He can give them a drink when they need it? One
verse separates their praise from their protest! But then, I think I can
remember when the period of time between me thanking God for the
food and then complaining about what I had to eat was pretty short.
Or what about the times between praising God in church and then
complaining about how it was conducted? Maybe our memory isn’t a
lot better than that of the Israelites. I think we can do better!

Hopefully you’ve been
inviting your friends,
family, co-workers and
neighbors to join us in
this day that is shaping up to be
one of the best ever. Our theme is
“The Heart of a Woman” and
will focus on how God works on
our hearts in different ways in
different phases of our life. Our
own Rachel Bean and Joyce Griffin will be two of the featured
speakers along with Embrolic
Selby from the Williamsburg
congregation. Continental breakfast will be at 8:30 a.m. with the
main event beginning at 9:00.
Daycare will be provided for the
little ones and a few of our men
are serving us lunch at noon. We
are all looking forward to a time
of encouragement and edification with our area sisters. Final
planning on Sunday, Oct. 26.
Thank you so much to Lisa Bares
and her many helpers for another successful “Great Clothes
Give Away” that was conducted
this weekend. We think we’re
just cleaning out our closets but
it is also a way to bless others
out of our abundance. The joy
and gratitude on the receivers’
faces are a blessing in return to
us. Also, a big thank you goes to
Martin Houston for keeping our
building grounds maintained in
Bruce’s absence. Martin may
mow grass (among other things)
for a living, but he also enjoys
doing it and does it cheerfully.
Thanks to these behind the
scenes workers. Do you know of
others? Thank them today.

Our teens (middle and high school)
will join together with teens
from Denbigh Christian Church
for a retreat near Luray, VA on
Oct. 31 through Nov. 2. Michael
Stohler and Roger Brown will
lead Encounters with Jesus. The
cost is $45/person.
To help keep the cost down our
church is asked to donate food
for two breakfasts (Saturday &
Sunday) as well as drink mixes.
A sign-up sheet is posted on the
hall bulletin board. Please take a
moment and volunteer to provide something.
