more about scaring people & scrounging
sweets—so come and join in a much
more positive and fun alternative.
It will be for children of primary age,
with games and fun activities, in the
Upper Room on Friday 31st October from
4.15pm-6.15pm.

What will you risk your life for?

The news this week has been full of the
Ebola crisis, although ironically less about
the estimated 10,000 Africans who have
died, and more about the 10 or so Western
health workers who have contracted the
illness while caring for the others. But the
message has been widely circulated—
unless more people go to help, the disease
could become endemic and spread widely.
Here’s the dilemma: to save lives, people
have to risk their lives. And even though
there are simple procedures in place to
minimise risk, you cannot eliminate risk
all together, and the odd mistakes that
have been made have a devastating
impact, given the 70% mortality rate.
However if no-one will take the risk to go
and help, then in the end every one of us
will be affected by the disease, if it spreads.
So there is a challenge—who will risk their
lives to save the lives of others?
Unfortunately, our prevailing culture
tends to say, ‘what’s in it for me’ - although
in the end, concern for families does move
some to take the risk. But Christians have
always had a higher calling to show
compassion. Indeed, even the early
Romans who opposed the spread of
Christianity, complained that when plague
hit Roman cities, all their people fled, but
Christians remained to care for the sick,
bury the dead, and often die while doing it.
That is no surprise, when Jesus our Lord,
did exactly that—he laid down his life to
save our lives, it takes sacrifice to save us.
But in case we miss the point, Jesus still
calls his people to
risk that sort of
sacrifice, not just to
save people from
Ebola, but from
100% mortality rate
of the eternal death
that awaits those
without his rescue.
So are you risking
anything to give
hope to the people
in this area? You
can start by praying
and then by sharing
the hope we have.
It’s worth the risk!

Sharing God’s Provision
For those of you that are interested in matters
financial, I thought I’d give you a brief summary
of the churches financial position at the end of
September.
We started the year by taking a small step of faith, in that, at that
time, our budget didn’t quite balance- with planned expenditure
being more than the planned income in the year. I’m pleased to
be able to report that at the end of September our income so far
is, in fact, £15,000 more than our expenditure– which is
something to thank God for. Having said that, my forecast for
the year end is that income will probably match our expenditure
and we should break even in the year. The only note of concern
is that we’ve had to curtail some of our planned expenditure,
particularly repairs and ongoing maintenance work to both the
Upper Room and the Church building, in order to achieve this.
The reason I mention this is that as we look forward to next year
and beyond, as we strive towards our 2020 Vision, we will face
the challenge of an increasing financial requirement that we all
need to be aware of.
I know it’s not something that is normally the
towards the top of our prayer agenda but do
please pray that God, through us and others,
will provide the financial resources that we are
going to need both for next year and the years
ahead and do pray for your PCC who face the
sometimes difficult task of trying to plan
wisely how best to use the resources we have.

Veil of Tears is a gripping documentary that tells the story of millions of
women who are persecuted for no
other reason than their gender. They
are one of the most disadvantaged,
abused and unreached groups in the entire world.
You may know that in our congregation we have some workers
from Gospel for Asia who are working to help these women. We
will be watching the film together and then Helen White will
share with us about her work for Gospel for Asia and her recent
trip to India.
Please do join us for what will be a real eye opener and a chance
to find out how to support these women and the work that Gospel for Asia are doing.

Safeguarding Training
4 November at 7.30pm
If you work with children (anyone under 18)
in our church you need to attend
Safeguarding Training. This will take place
on Tuesday 4 November at 7.30 pm in
the Upper Room. This training is essential
for anyone who did not complete training last year, even if you
have received training through work or summer camps. As a
church we are committed to keeping all our children safe from
harm, promoting their well-being and showing them God’s

Invitation Quiz Night

In a world of uncertainty – ebola, IS, Pistorius – does God really
care? Eddie Scrase-Field will give a short talk to begin to address
this question at our quiz night. Teams should ideally have 6 – 8
members and, if demand exceeds supply, priority will be given to
those inviting their friends to the event. Booking as soon as possible recommended!

Tim is the Creative Director at The Good Book
Company. He is series editor of Explore Biblereading notes, edits the UK edition of the The
Briefing and has contributed to many books published by The Good Book
Company and others. Tim became a Christian as a teenager in Southport,
then studied theology and Religious Studies at Bristol University. He has
a lifelong passion for youth and children’s work, and has been involved in
regular training events and conferences throughout the UK and USA. Tim
is married to Kathy and has three teenage daughters.

family, to their home, for a day, a weekend or at Christmas.
You don’t need to live near a university, as students will travel
for the privilege of meeting you, learning about real life in this
country, and sharing their own culture. HOST is a voluntary
activity which makes ambassadors for international goodwill of
us all.
