The most popular sport 5 HEALTHY AND FIT TEENAGER MEANS HAPPY TEENAGER – HEALTHY LIFESTYLE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE COMENIUS 2011-2013 A ccording to the statistics soccer is the world’s most popular sports discipline, so no wonder that football matches are very important events also for Polish fans. Football is popular among people of any age and sex. Over 400,000 Poles play football regularly, with millions more playing occasionally. To play soccer you need nothing but comfortable shoes, shorts and a T-shirt. You can play it in a sports field, football pitch or just a meadow. All these things make it accessible for everybody. When it’s getting warm outside, you can see lots of people playing football all around. No matter how old you are, what your profession or sex is. It is for all those people who want to be fit, share emotions with friends and pass the time in an effective way. 1.1.A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY The history of football in Poland started in the late 19th century The first Polish football clubs were Lechia Lwów (1903), Czarni Lwów (1903). The Polish national federation, called the Polish Football Union (PZPN) was founded in 1919, in Warsaw. The PZPN joined FIFA in 1923 and UEFA in 1955. In 1921 the Polish national football team played its first international match. Prof. Henry Jordan, a court physician of the Habsburgs is said to be the pioneer of sports in Poland who began promoting football as a healthy sport in the open air; some sources also credit him with bringing the first football to Poland from his travels to Brunswick in 1890. The Cambridge Rules and parts of the International Football Association Board regulations to Polish language were translated into Polish by Dr. Edmund Cenar. Initially the rules and regulations were very simplified, with the size of the field and the ball varying greatly. Despite being discouraged by many educational societies and the state authorities, the new sport gained extreme popularity among pupils of various gymnasiums in Galicia. The first football teams were formed and in 1903–1904, four Lwów-based gymnasiums formed their own sport clubs: the IV Gymnasium for Boys formed a club later renamed to Pogoń Lwów, while the pupils of the I and II State Schools formed the Sława Lwów club, later renamed to Czarni Lwów. In the same season the Lechia Lwów was also formed. It is uncertain which of the clubs was created first as they were initially poorly organized; however, the Czarni Lwów are usually credited as being the first Polish professional football team. The following year, the popularity of the sport spread to nearby Rzeszów where Resovia Rzeszów was formed, while in the German-held part of Poland, the 1. FC Katowice and Warta Poznań were formed. After the outbreak of World War I, most of the Galician football players, many of them members of either Strzelec or Sokół, joined Piłsudski's Polish Legions. The unit, fighting alongside the Austro-Hungarian Army, fought mostly in various parts of Russian-held Poland, which led to popularisation of the new sport in other parts of Poland. After Poland regained her independence, on December 21, 1919 the Polish Football Association (PZPN) was formed. Headed by Edward Centrarowski, it united most of the then-existent Polish football clubs. The league could not be formed due to the Polish-Bolshevik War, but in 1922 the PZPN published the rules of football and the following year it joined FIFA. In 1921 the league was resumed and the first Champion of Poland was Cracovia, followed by Pogoń Lwów in 1922, 1923, 1925 and 1926. As Poland was then a fully independent state, in 1921 the Polish national football team was formed. On December 18, 1921 it played its first international match in Budapest against the Hungarian team and was defeated 1:0. In the third international match in Stockholm on May 28, 1922 Poland defeated Sweden 2:1, scoring its first international victory. During World War II, football in occupied Poland was subject to significant restrictions (see Football in occupied Poland (1939–1945)) for more. 6 HEALTHY AND FIT TEENAGER MEANS HAPPY TEENAGER – HEALTHY LIFESTYLE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE COMENIUS 2011-2013 1.2. INTRODUCTION Football was first played in Egypt. The leather ball was invented by the Chinese in the fourth century BC. This arose when one of the five great rulers used several hard pressed roots to form a spherical mass which covered with pieces of raw hide. The first thing they did with it was passing it from hand to hand. The game became a national English sport since the early nineteenth century and gave origin to rugby. The modern football is originated in England in the nineteenth century. But his birth is dated much earlier, since ball games which were played with both feet, were already practiced by many ancient peoples. During the middle Ages, the football was banned because of its violence, and in 1848 the first Regulation of Cambridge appeared. In 1863 new rules were created and football and rugby finally split. On May 21th, 1904 the FIFA (Federation International of Football Association) is founded and for the first time global rules are set. 18 HEALTHY AND FIT TEENAGER MEANS HAPPY TEENAGER – HEALTHY LIFESTYLE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE COMENIUS 2011-2013 4.2.SOCCER FIELD AND EQUIPMENT Football is played in an area of natural or artificial grass. It has a rectangular shape. The land permitted measures go from 90 to 120 meters long and from 45 to 90 meters wide. The two lines located along the field lines are called “bands”, while the other lines are called goal lines. The goals consist of two vertical poles or sticks of 2.44 meters high located 7.32 meters apart from the center of each goal line. The top of the posts are joined by another horizontal pole, known as crossbar. The equipment is the clothing and accessories that players must wear during the official FIFA matches. The rules of the game set the basic equipment that each player must use, as well as prohibit those other objects that may be dangerous. The players usually have identifying numbers on the back of their shirts and sometimes on the front side and on the pants. Some teams also tend to show the name, surname or nickname of the player. The equipment of the players has evolved from the early days of sport, when players wore thick cotton shirts, pants below the knees and rigid leather boots. 19 HEALTHY AND FIT TEENAGER MEANS HAPPY TEENAGER – HEALTHY LIFESTYLE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE COMENIUS 2011-2013 4.3.SPANISH TOURNAMENTS 4.3.1 Spanish league The Spanish league is the most important football competition at national level. A dominant figure in the paint, Yilmaz is a tower of strength for Turkey and yet for all her talent and attributes, she is known for remaining humble and very much a team player. Whether she has her back to the basket or is facing up to a defender, she ahs an array of skills necessary to convert the situation into points. She is almost unstoppable when catching the ball within a couple of metres of the basket. With excellent footwork, the ability to pass in the lane to her teammates and her unquenchable thirst for rebounds, she is a nightmare for opposing coaches. It is difficult to reduce the impact of Yilmaz as her superb record over the years with both the National Team and her club sides have proven. Much of this is also due to her willingness to set the tone and lead by example in her approach to the game and work-rate. Yılmaz is the first Turkish woman to play in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). In 1999, she participated in the Charlotte Sting's training camp, but was released before the season started. In 2000, she attended the training camp for the now-defunct Miami Sol, but was also released prior to the start of the regular season. Then in 2003, Yılmaz signed a free agent contract with thePhoenix Mercury and played five games for them. The following year, 2004, she played seven games for the San Antonio Silver Stars. The survey was asking pupils about who the most popular sport person is in the year 2011 in Slovenia, which sporting event is the most important in Slovenia in 2011 and which is the most popular sport – all by their opinion. The survey access was limited only to the time during the classes, and pupils couldn't answer the survey in afternoons or during that weekend, because we wanted to get a vote from each person just once. The survey was solved by 454 pupils of Elementary School Žiri. There were few girls more voting than boys. Pupils who were absent from school during that time, didn't vote. The survey was very short. 46 HEALTHY AND FIT TEENAGER MEANS HAPPY TEENAGER – HEALTHY LIFESTYLE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE COMENIUS 2011-2013 When they had to vote for the best sport person, Dejan Zavec (boxer) got 31 % of all votes, Tina Maze is in second place (skier) with 28 %, and Petra Majdič (cross-country skier) in third place with 20 %. 47 HEALTHY AND FIT TEENAGER MEANS HAPPY TEENAGER – HEALTHY LIFESTYLE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE COMENIUS 2011-2013 Our survey showed, that pupils of Elementary School Žiri think that the most popular sport is football (with 33 % of all votes), then comes basketball with 24 % and skiing with 10 % of all votes. FOOTBALL 12.1. FOOTBALL GENERALLY Football is a team game and it's one of the most popular sports in the world. There are many forms of football. We know American football (in America) and Australian football (in Australia). None of them is similar to our football. The game takes place on a football playing field. This is a grass square marked with white lines – touchlines (the length is about 100 meters and the width is about 70 meters). The shorter boundaries are goal lines. The goal is 2.44 meters high and 7.32 meters wide. The perimeter of the football ball is about 20 or 30 centimeters. In the team there are 11 players. One of them is the goalkeeper and his equipment must be different from the other players’. There are defense players, center players and forward players. There are also substitute players. Their task is to score as many goals as possible. If both teams have the same score, the result is a tie. Officially, the game lasts 90 minutes, but the judges can also determine extensions. There can be 2 extensions, but they can last only 30 minutes. The head referee can punish the players with red or yellow cards. If the player gets a yellow card, he can continue with the game, but if he gets a red card, he must stop with the game, and mustn’t play on the following match. If he collects 3 of 4 yellow cards, he isn’t allowed to play on the following game. 12.2. SLOVENIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM The Slovenian national football team is controlled by the Football Association of Slovenia. The team played their first match in 1992. The first selector was Bojan Prašnikar. Slovenia participated in their first unofficial match which took place on 19 June in 1991. Their first formal match was on 3 June in 1992 in Tallin against Estonia. In 1994, Zdenko Verdenik became the new head coach, which brought Slovenian football team to their first qualifications for the European championship in 1996. Slovenian team got the 5th place in their group. Our football team didn’t achieve a good position in the world championship in 1998 in France. The next head coach became Srečko Katanec, and in 2002 Bojan Prašnikar became the head coach again. Branko Oblak soon replaced him. When Matjaž Kek became the new head coach, luck was on our side again. With his help, the team got to the qualifications for World Cup 2010. 49 HEALTHY AND FIT TEENAGER MEANS HAPPY TEENAGER – HEALTHY LIFESTYLE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE COMENIUS 2011-2013 QUALIFICATIONS FOR WORLD CUP 2010: Slovenia was drawn into a group with Czech Republic, Poland, Northern Ireland, Slovakia and San Marino. WORLD CUP 2010: Slovenia qualified to the World Cup 2010 that took place in South Africa from 11June to 11 July 2010. Slovenia was drawn into Group C alongside England, Algeria and USA. They won their opening game against Algeria Robert Koren scoring goal for Slovenia. In their second game against the United States, Slovenia was leading 2 : 0 at half time with Valter Birsa and Zlatan Ljubijankič scoring for Slovenia, however Landon Donovan and Michael Bradley scored for the USA for the score to finish 2 : 2. In their last match, Slovenia lost to England 0 : 1 by a goal from Jermain Defoe. Because the United States beat Algeria with the only goal scored in the 92 nd minute of the match, the Slovenian team was eliminated. 12.4.SLAVIŠA STOJANOVIĆ He is the current head coach of the Slovenian football team. Stojanović qualified his squad for UEFA Cup (2005 and 2006). Slaviša's glory years were 2007 and 2008, when NK/FC Domžale won the title. The Slovenian coach became the youngest manager in the Slovenian history to win the championship two times in a row. NK/FC Domžale played for the first time in UEFA Champions League. Slaviša Stojanović signed for NK CM Celje in 2008. In that season, his new team finished the Slovenian PrvaLiga with 3 points more than the champions from NK/FC Domžale. KIT Slovenia played their first official games in 1992 in the traditional colors of Slovenian nation – white, blue and red. In 1994 the board of Slovenian football association decided to change the colors to white and green, which are the traditional colors of the capital city of Ljubljana. Because of the fact that green was never the national color of Slovenia, many people had argued that the new combination was inappropriate and a movement was started to return the colors back to where they were from the start. In December 2009, the board voted for the change of the jersey colors and from 2012 onwards the main colors of the team will be white for home and blue for away matches with shades of red. The current kit provider of the national team is Nike. 12.6.2.FOOTBALL SONGS Anthem of the Slovenian national football team is “Dviga Slovenija zastave”, which translates to “Slovenia is raising their flags.” It’s originally sung by a Slovenian rock band Siddharta, and features some well-known singers from Slovenia: Pero Lovšin, Vlado Kreslin, Zoran Predin and Grega Skočir. The song is about pride and about supporting our heroes. Other football songs in Slovenian language are: “Na fuzbal me pust” (“Let me go to the football match”), “Slovenija gre naprej” (“Slovenia is moving forward”), “Slovenja spet se zbuja” (“Slovenia is waking up again”) and many others. An engineer and inventor Stanko Bloudek was the first person who got an idea about a ski- jump. He chose a steep grassy slope and Ivan Rožman designed it. The jump was about to be built. The first and biggest problem was financial support. There was almost none. The project was partially funded by The Skiing Club, but Mr Bloudek and Mr Rožman helped with the money too. Brothers Gorišek invited famous Norwegian ski jumpers to come to Planica. In 1934, Slovenia got the first big ski- jump and the first competition. In March 1969, the first real flight occurred. There were 90.000 spectators in three days and that was an extreme number for that time. . . The best jumper was Manfred Wolf, who jumped 165 metres. Long ski jump or better ski flying fans could see five world records at the end of that week. Planica became a legend. After that it had the honour to host the World Cup ski flying competition in 1972, 1979, 1985, 1994 and 2004. There is a World Cup jumping competition in Planica each year. 14.2.ABOUT PLANICA Planica is an alpine valley in the northwest of Slovenia, extending south from the border village of Rateče, not far from another well-known ski resort, Kranjska Gora. Further south, the valley extends into the Tamar Valley, a popular hiking destination in the Triglav National Park. The Valley is famous for ski-jumps, where there are World Cup competitions every year. On the famous ski flying hill of Gorišek brothers several world records were achieved. Between 1987 and 2011 the world record was owned by Planica. Now the longest ski jumps in the world are those of Vikersund, Norway. The last world record in Planica was 239 metres. It was achieved by Norwegian Bjørn Einar Romøren in 2005. Finn Janne Ahonen jumped very well on the flying hill Planica too. He jumped 240 metres but unfortunately he fell. The most famous competition in Planica was the World Cup final in 2005. In 2011 the record was achieved by Johan Remen Evensen on Vikersundbakken ski flying hill. He jumped 246,5 metres. On the right of the hill there is the jump K-90. And on the right there is Bloudek’s ski- jump, which collapsed ten years ago and is waiting to be reconstructed. 54 HEALTHY AND FIT TEENAGER MEANS HAPPY TEENAGER – HEALTHY LIFESTYLE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE COMENIUS 2011-2013 14.3.THE BEST ACHIEVEMENTS IN PLANICA 240 m - Janne Ahonen (Fin) –FALL– 2005 239 m - Björn Einar Romören (Nor) – RECORD – 2005 236 m - Tommy Ingebrigtsen (Nor) – FALL – 2005 235,5 m - Matti Hautamäki (Fin) – 2005 234,5 m - Björn Einar Romören (Nor) – 2005 234,5 m - Andreas Widhölzl (Avt) – FALL – 2005 233,5 m - Gregor Schlierenzauer (Avt) - 2008 - in Janne Ahonen (Fin) – 2005 232,5 m - Anders Bardal (Nor) ter Gregor Schlierenzauer (Avt) – 2008 – in VeliMatti Lindstroem (Fin) - FALL – 2003 … 229,0 m – Robert Kranjec (Slo) – 2007 226 m – Rok Benkovič (Slo) – 2005 Nordic centre Planica 14.4.PLANICA 2011 The event occurred from 17 March 2011 to 20 March 2011. POPULAR SPORTS Many people in Slovakia like to watch ice-hockey, talk about football and comment on tennis. Some of them swim in the summer and ski in winter. In Summer, many people spend the warmest days near water. There are quite many natural and artificial lakes, that allow people to swim or sail a boat. Slovakia is a mountainous country. Winter ski resorts are usually full of skiing people. Beside of ski, some people are trying their snowboards. The tourist roads in the mountains are very well marked and hiking maps are available for each region. You can meet hikers in the woods of High Tatras ("Vysoké Tatry"), as well as around Bratislava in Small Carpathes ("Malé Karpaty"). Many of these roads are suitable for bikes too. Some roads are used by inline-skaters, but there is no real track network. So what are the most popular games? Football (European football, soccer, "futbal") is the most popular game in Slovakia. It is the cheapest collective game - only a relatively flat ground and a ball is needed to make almost any number of people (four up to twenty-two or more) enjoy the game. Almost every town and village has its own playground and a team that is playing in the regional league. Ice-Hockey ("ľadový hokej", "hokej") is more expensive to go in. However, all clubs have their youth teams to support young talents. Other popular games are volleyball ("volejbal"), basketball ("basketbal"), tennis ("tenis"), handball ("hádzaná") and for the wealthier also golf. Games, that are very popular in other countries, such as baseball, rugby, softball or pétanque have only started their invasion of Slovak playgrounds. There are some organizations, that try to propagandize the games and hold public tournaments. The number one is probably ice-hockey. Since the team of Slovakia takes part at every World Championship since 1996 and in the past few years has reached very good results (gold in 2002, silver in 2000 and bronze in 2003), many people like to identify themselves with the team and become the greatest patriots, at least for the two weeks the championship lasts. The results of the North-American NHL are also one of the most important news items, because there are quite many NHL-players from Slovakia. 58 HEALTHY AND FIT TEENAGER MEANS HAPPY TEENAGER – HEALTHY LIFESTYLE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE COMENIUS 2011-2013 16.
