I would like to thank the students, staff, parents and community for getting the 2014-2015 school year off to such a good start. Although it is only mid-October, there are plenty of reasons for us to be proud. This school year started off with 6th- 12th graders getting the opportunity to eat breakfast each morning after first period. It has been a huge hit with our students. Hopefully it is making us a healthier and less hungry school. Well over half of our students are participating in this program—that is awesome! As a school, we believe there are multiple reasons why this has been a positive change. Academically, I’m proud to say the “down’s” list has been smaller lately. This is a trend we hope will continue as we get closer to the semester and the end of the school year. I believe both staff and students should get the credit for this success. A lot of work goes into both teaching and learning and we are fortunate at Malcolm to have an excellent staff of educators and a great group of students. I’d also like to commend all of our sports teams, clubs, and fine-arts programs for getting the school year started on the right foot. Both boys and girls sports teams are either in the midst of having a good year or have had a good year by performing at a high level and being very competitive. STUCO, FBLA, and Skills USA have all had beginning of the year activities that went well and have us heading in a positive direction. The fall band/choir concert sounded great! It is awesome to see so many of our kids participating so well in multiple activities. There are a lot of positive things going on in our district. We are all humbled and very thankful for the individuals that make up our educational community. A huge thank you to everyone who contributes to making our school district one of the best in the state! “Welcome to the Shipyard” Homecoming 2014 By: Mrs. Becky Densberger 2014 Homecoming Queen Amber Green and King Tucker McHugh Homecoming 2014 was a huge success with lots of fun activities and Clipper Pride! This year’s homecoming was a combined effort of the cheerleaders and the student council members. Each class was responsible for decorating a drywall sign and a portion of the fence by the football field. The cheerleaders decorated the commons area hallway, the west fence behind the team and the entryway into the school. The parking lot definitely displayed homecoming spirit! We had theme dress up days and were so happy with all of the participation from grades Kindergarten through seniors. Monday was America Monday and everyone displayed their pride by wearing red, white and blue. Twin Tuesday gave students a chance to dress as twins. On Wednesday everyone dressed the western theme. Thursday was Teddy Bear Thursday and students brought their favorite teddy bear to school and dressed in pajamas and slippers. Friday was our blue and white pride day – students showed their true Malcolm Clipper pride by wearing our school colors. On Friday morning we had our tunnel walk where the Kindergarten through 8th grade students formed a tunnel for our high school athletes to walk through. The students forming the tunnel enjoyed this as much as the athletes walking through it. On Friday afternoon, 9th through 12th grade students participated in games and activities on the football field. There was girl’s powder puff football, bicycle relay races, athletic uniform relay races, hoola hoop contests and much more. The powder puff football game was quite competitive! The seniors and sophomores played in the championship game where the seniors took the victory. Mr. Hoyer concluded our Friday afternoon activities with a very inspirational speech. Throughout the week, teachers were judging the students on their participation and Clipper Pride spirit. The class with the overall best participation and spirit received the Clipper Ship. That award went to the junior class. The class with the most spirit was the sophomores and they received the spirit stick. The coronation ceremony followed the football game and then the dance was held in the Westfall gym. Pizza was provided at the dance by the school. The freshman class provided sponsors and cleanup following the dance. The sophomore class provided snacks for the dance malcolm public schools “the clipper” october 23, 2014 page 2 Pictured L-R: Jamin Thomas, Shianne Hargens, Jordan Redler, (Past Queen) Justine Nelson, (Queen) Amber Green, (King) Tucker McHugh, Emily Locke, Mason Dedick, Samantha Hargens. Thank you to Mr. Adams and Mrs. Dolliver for taking care of the coronation ballots. Thank you to Mrs. Watson and Mr. Tarr and the student council members for their help in organizing the events for the week. Thank you to the cheerleaders who spent their weekend decorating the school. Thank you to Heath Kramer for always doing such a great job of announcing, not only at homecoming, but throughout our entire school year. Thank you to Ann Kramer and Teresa Gregg for their assistance in announcements, lists, etc. Thank you to Mrs. Dolliver for getting all of the elementary kids involved in this fun week. Thank you to Mrs. Kopecky for opening the concession stand for our Friday afternoon games. Thank you to Wendy Powers for putting together the homecoming program. Thank you to Mr. Hoyer for giving such a great and powerful speech to the students. Thank you to Mr. Coufal, Mr. Squires, Mr. Tobey and Mr. Donahue for referring the powder puff game. Thank you to Mr. Adams, Mr. Tarr, Mrs. Samuelson, Mr. Eichenberger, Mr. Tobey and Mrs. Watson for staying to help with the dance. Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Duckett, Mr. and Mrs. Bauer, Mrs. Morsett, Mrs. Anderson, Mr. Fortik and Mrs. Popp for also helping with the dance. Thank you to the sophomores for providing snacks for the dance. Thank you to all of the staff for supporting homecoming. Kindergarten – We discussed what to do in a fire, how to get out and who to call. We put on our fire gear with an air tank to let the children know what we look like and sound like. 1st – 5th grades – We met in the gym and ran through several scenarios on how to get out of your house if it was on fire. Can you get out through a door or a window? What if you are on the second floor? What do you do if your clothes were on fire (stop, cover your face, drop and roll). Do you have a meeting place outside your home where the whole family meets in a fire emergency? The kids asked us some great questions. We also had two senior high students in the gym who are interested in fire fighting as a career. L-R: Jonah Beckmann, Matthew Kallhoff Please ask your children about fire safety. Review your plan to get out and where your meeting place is. Check your smoke detector batteries. Set off your detector at night to see if your children wake up. Make sure your house/driveway is clearly marked with your house number. Have a safe and happy Halloween!! Nebraska FBU Team Selects Two Malcolm Students Congratulations Colton Hill and Mason Goodwater for being selected to the 2014 Nebraska Football University National Team. The Nebraska FBU team is compromised of all star players throughout the state and will compete against teams from other states for a national title. The boys had to tryout by completing speed, agility and football drills, and were ultimately selected for the overall athleticism and personal character. Good luck and best wishes! Health News – 2014 L-R: Mason Goodwater, Colton Hill By: Mr. Tobey As we approach the end of the first quarter of 2014 both health classes have made great strides in their understanding of health topics and what’s affecting today’s youth. We live st in a very complex society faced everyday by important health decisions that have to be made by today’s youth. Both classes have been able to learn and adapt some of these m principles to their everyday lives and future moving forward. p Health-1 (freshmen) are currently studying violence prevention and taking a look into H what wh may cause violence in schools. Throughout the semester they have studied lessons in nutrition, weight and body composition, physical activity, health skills and character, and nutr ways to t achieve good mental health. They have demonstrated great knowledge in these areas as it relates l t to them and their future. Health-2 (sophomores) are currently studying the male/female reproductive systems. This lesson leads us into our baby unit when most people see the students caring for a demo baby for 3 days. The sophomores have also studied chapters in CPR/First Aid, stress and anxiety, peer/family relationships, and mental/emotional problems. As they continue their journey in life, they will be able to apply many of these important health topics to their everyday lifestyles. malcolm public schools “the clipper” october 23, 2014 page 4 Library Media Centers Happenings By: Mrs. Betty Geiser The Westfall Library Media Center has been very busy so far this school year.
