Greetings, St. Francis family! As I have mentioned over the past several weeks, I
could not have felt more welcomed into a parish community than the way you
have opened your arms to me. Thank you for making me feel at home. I have
been absolutely amazed at how much St. Francis offers for our parishioners and
for the greater Gulf Breeze/Pensacola community. We are certainly an active
parish! I am thrilled for the hands and feet that belong to this congregation.
Excitement is in the air! I look forward to working together as we continue
building upon the ministries already in place and developing other ministries in order to reach further
needs within the parish and the greater community.
For this edition of the Messenger, I’d like to take this opportunity to offer a few comments related to our
liturgical worship and pastoral care efforts: Addition to the liturgy: A Penitential Order – As you may have
noticed, this past Sunday, Lent 1, we started the service a little differently with what is known as the
Penitential Order. The Penitential Order is an optional addition to the liturgy found in our Book of
Common Prayer often used during the season of Lent as a way of further expressing our penitence;
feelings of remorse for our wrongdoings against God and one another. I mention this slight change to the
liturgy because over time, there may be other slight, and I emphasize slight, variances within our services
for the purposes of offering new and traditional Episcopal practices of worship. No addition or variance is
permanent by any means. In fact, the addition of the Penitential Order is only during the season of Lent.
Pastoral Care – Our care for one another is one of the most important elements of ministry. There are
moments in our lives in which we may be able to provide more care for others and other times in which we
may need more care ourselves. Please let the church know how we can help you and your family. If you
are undergoing a procedure, call the church office and let us know. If you have a friend or family member
who is sick or has recently experienced a trauma in their life, call the office and have them added to our
prayer list. And on the same note, we can always use more people to assist with the pastoral needs of our
parish. Call the office and let us know what you may be interested in doing to help the parish or greater
community. As I have said before. I am thrilled to be serving as your priest in charge. Now more so than
when I first began. I look forward to continuing to get to know each of you and the parish community as a
whole and am here for you in any way that I can. Call the office. Let’s set up an appointment. Let’s go to
lunch! I am eagerly looking forward to what lies down the road for this wonderful parish community.

AT ST. FRANCIS
At St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church, our Sunday
mornings begin with Adult Sunday School in the
Conference Room at 9:00 a.m. and Children’s Sunday
School at 9:45 a.m. Worship is at 10:00 a.m. with
Nursery provided. We utilize both Rite One and Rite
Two Holy Eucharist, with organ and choir.
Refreshments and conversation take place after the
service in the Parish Hall. The Holy Eucharist is also
celebrated at Noon every Wednesday.

St. Francis Book Club
Meets the 3rd Monday of each month at 1:30 p.m.
in the Library
The Men’s Supper is starting up and the first event will
be on Wednesday, March 11th at 6:00 p.m. and features
a Low Country Fish Boil. All St. Francis men and their
friends are invited. Donations will be accepted.
Women’s Bible Study
Meets at 10:00 a.m. in the Conference Room
on Tuesdays.
Women of St. Francis (WOSF) Luncheon
Takes place the second Tuesday of each month at
11:30 a.m. All ladies are invited. Please bring a
little something to share.
St. Francis Grief Group (SFGG)
Meets on the third Tuesday of each month
in the Rector’s office at 6:00 p.m.

ST. FRANCIS LENTEN SERIES 2015
Please join us each Wednesday evening in Lent,
February 25th through March 25th, at 6:00pm for a
simple supper, presentation and conversation related
to "A Wondrous Love," the Lenten Devotional using the
work of Henri Nouwen and C.S. Lewis that we will be
using throughout the Season of Lent. Devotional
booklets are available for everyone at no charge. Soup,
salad and bread will be served. All are welcome! A
sign-up sheet can be found on the bulletin board in the
Parish Hall.

Please join us on Saturday evenings during Lent at 5:00
p.m. for Taizé in the Atrium. Taizé services are quiet
and contemplative with music and meditations
interspersed throughout. The services will feature the
St. Francis Taizé Ensemble led by Cathy Griffing and
guest musicians from throughout the community. The
remaining dates of the services are: March 7th, 14th, 21st,
and 28th.

SPRING FLING FUN!
FRIDAY, MARCH 20TH
Our next fantastic Trivia Night Fundraiser will be on
Friday, March 20th at 6:30 p.m. Mark your calendars
now and start getting your teams of 8 together!
We have space for 12 teams of 8 people each. The cost
is $20 per person or $160 a table. Beer, wine and soda
will be served as part of your entry fee. Each team gets
together on what food to bring "potluck style" for their
table to munch on during the evening. We are also
gathering together some incredible prizes for our raffle
drawings. If you own a business, know a business or
have a friend who would be interested in donating
something, please let us know or arrange for the
donation on your own.

The second edition of the St. Francis Cookbook is
here and will be on sale in the Parish Hall after
Sunday services for $15.
These cookbooks are a labor of love by Phyllis Ham
and Janet Wood and make excellent birthday,
hostess, anniversary, Christmas or “just because”
gifts.
Phyllis and Janet funded the first edition cookbook
expense and after a complete sell-out reported
$3,000 income from sales.
What initially started as a fundraiser became a gift.
As requested by Phyllis and Janet, the funds earned
were allocated to the following ministries:

Gulf Breeze Reading Camp “Safari Week” is August
3rd -7th, 2015. It promises to be even more fun and
educational than last year. Please mark your calendar
so that you can volunteer a little time during that
week. There are plenty of opportunities to help out
from teaching to working in the kitchen. We need
teachers, teen and young adult counselors, assistant
teachers, chaperones, administrative staff, set
builders, techies, food preparation, you name it. You
can volunteer a little or a lot of time. The most
important job for those of you who think you have no
time or nothing to contribute is to spend 30 minutes
reading with a child. There will be a sign up sheet in
the parish hall.
We can also use old magazines with pictures of birds
and animals for our group projects. If you have some
to donate turn them in to the Reading Camp office or
set them on the Reading Camp table that will soon be
set up in the hall outside the parish hall. We can look
forward to some returning campers as well as new
ones.
DEACON LAURA SAYS FAREWELL
TO ST. FRANCIS!
Sunday, March 1st marks Deacon Laura Kelson's last
official day serving as our deacon. Her presence, warm
heart and infectious smile will certainly be missed!
Laura has been called by the Bishop to serve as deacon to
St. Augustine's in Navarre with Mother Beth Hoffmann.
We thank Laura for serving the St. Francis family over
the past year and are encouraged knowing that our
brothers and sisters in Navarre will be enhanced by
Deacon Laura's ministry and presence. God speed,
Laura!
The Rev. James Russell Kendrick, rector of St.
Stephen's Episcopal Church in Birmingham,
Alabama, was elected as bishop of the Episcopal
Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast on Feb. 21, pending
the required consents from a majority of bishops with
jurisdiction and standing committees of The
Episcopal Church.
Kendrick, 54, was elected during the diocese's 44th
annual convention held at Trinity Episcopal Church
in Mobile, Alabama. He was elected on the third
ballot out of a field of three nominees. He received 97
votes of 163 cast in the lay order and 32 of 53 cast in
the clergy order. An election on that ballot required
82 in the lay order and 27 in the clergy order.
Kendrick has served as rector of St. Stephen's since
2007. In 1984, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in
architecture and marketing from Auburn University
in Alabama; and in 1995, he received a Master of
Divinity degree from Virginia Theological Seminary
in Alexandria. Russell is married to Robin. They have
two children, Aaron and Hannah.

TREASURER’S REPORT
UPDATE FROM THE
JUNIOR WARDEN
Among my responsibilities as Junior Warden is the
planning and managing of projects related to our
parish’s physical plant. Upkeep of our furnishings,
buildings systems, and grounds requires constant
attention. In the future you can expect to see:

Every 10 years or so, the beautiful travertine marble
floor and steps around the altar need cleaning and
refinishing. It is time to attend to this again, and this
work will be scheduled for after Eastertide. Quotes
have been obtained and funds for this will come from
the General Maintenance fund.

As you’ve read in “The Messenger”, Matthew
Kenworthy is planning to construct a fence along the
playground as his Eagle Scout project. The Vestry is
working with Matthew while he obtains estimates,
permits and materials for this project. We appreciate
Matthew’s dedication to our parish. Matthew is
engaging in fundraising for this project.

The carpeting in the office is in sad shape. Cleaning
the carpet has no effect since it is so worn. We will
need to replace it in the offices and conference room
in the near future. If any parishioner has a contact
with a carpet company and can get us favorable
pricing, please notify me, or Chris in the office. This
is not a budgeted item for 2015, so if anyone can find
it in your heart to underwrite this project, it would be
greatly appreciated.

Furniture for the Rector’s office seating area: two
new chairs have been donated by Mike and Alice
Lane, and a new small sofa has been anonymously
donated. We thank them all for their generosity. The
furniture remains the property of our parish.

We will have a Spring parish Clean Up Day, as well
as a Fall one. Please plan to attend. We will need
volunteers to make sandwiches, work in the
Sanctuary cleaning and polishing, and to work
outside doing pruning, weeding, etc. Please save the
date of March 14th and plan to come help. It’s a
happy job.

NOAH’S NURSERY
Birth-Kindergarten meets in the nursery during the
church service. “Busy Bags” are in the Narthex
each Sunday morning for those children attending
church. The nursery is available for children ages
birth to five years during the Sunday service.
Please let us know if you can serve in the Nursery or
Sunday School.

RELAY FOR LIFE 2015
Relay for Life is underway for the next Gulf Breeze
event on April 24, 2015. Our relay team is set up
online if you would like to make a donation for this

Relay for Life. We got off to a great start raising
$145 at our first bake sale. Your help in baking and

Our boys raised $2,370 for
their camp accounts and
cooked 75 meals for the
Waterfront Rescue Mission.
EASTER EGG HUNT IS APRIL 6TH!
Our annual Easter Egg Hunt in the beautiful gardens
at St. Francis will take place after Holy Eucharist on
Easter Sunday. All children and grandchildren are
invited!
Donations of wrapped candy and plastic eggs are
greatly appreciated and can be dropped off at the
parish office by Friday April 4th.

BOY SCOUT EAGLE
PROJECT
Yahoo! Matthew Kenworthy decided to do his Boy
Scout Eagle Project at St. Francis.
He will be leading his fellow scouts as well as adult
leadership to build a fence from the side of the building
to the wooden fence. He has had this vision for some
time to help keep the children safe from wandering
into the parking lot. His estimated cost is $2,900 and
he has already received a donation of $500 from the
cookbook sale.
If you would like to donate for this Eagle project
please let Chris Miller or Jodi Kenworthy know. Please
make checks payable to St. Francis of Assisi and memo
“Kenworthy Eagle Project”. He is working with our
Vestry to come up with a final plan and hopes to have
it completed by April if not sooner. A copy of the plans
can be found on the bulletin board in the hall. Thank
