West Exe School, Head of English Job Description To be responsible for establishing and ensuring high standards of teaching and learning in the subject with due regard to departmental and school policies as well as the requirements of the National Curriculum. Job Title Head of English Main pay scale plus TLR1c This job description is not a comprehensive definition of the post. Discussions will take place on a regular basis to clarify individual responsibilities within the general framework and character of the post as identified below. The conditions of employment of teachers in the Schools Teachers’ Pay and Conditions of Service Document apply to this post, whose holder is expected to carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require, under the reasonable direction of the Headteacher. Responsible to Assistant Headteacher Job Purpose To monitor, support and motivate teachers of the subject in order to enable all students to make progress in line with school targets. To provide professional leadership and management for English in order to secure high quality teaching, effective use of resources and improved standards of learning and achievement for all learners. To lead policy development at subject level based, in part, on an evaluation of the effectiveness of teaching and learning. To contribute to policy development at school level. Units of Responsibility To establish and secure a commitment to a well informed vision for the subject. To establish short, medium and long term plans for the development and resourcing of the subject. To establish and implement clear policies / practices including schemes of work that meet the requirements of the National Curriculum, school policies and public examination requirements. To establish and implement clear policies / practices for assessing, recording and reporting on student achievement. To lead by example through the demonstration of high standards of teaching and professional activity. To implement school systems for monitoring the progress of all students taking action as necessary to raise achievement. To implement school systems for monitoring the performance of all teachers of English taking action as necessary to support improvement. To set expectations for staff and students in the context of working practices and relationships. To manage the work of the Assistant Heads of English, Key Stage coordinators. To ensure effective and efficient management and organisation of accommodation and learning resources including information technology. To manage allocated finances in an effective and efficient way. To create an effective, safe working and learning environment. To work with others to ensure that subject delivery forms part of a coherent strategy for raising student achievement across the curriculum e.g. in literacy, numeracy and information technology. To attend parents, staff and year meetings, including Middle Leadership Team and Extended Leadership Team meetings. Ensuring that learning is personalised through good use of assessment data and good assessment practice including focussed work for all ability levels including those with Special Educational Needs and those who are identified as Gifted and Talented. Supporting staff in dealing effectively with student behaviour in order to remove barriers to learning. Annual Performance Management of colleagues under direct line management. To make full commitment to maintain a high level of subject knowledge and subject application including use of ICT. To make a full commitment to personal professional development including full involvement in the school performance management system and using outcomes to improve your teaching and your students’ learning. To ensure that you safeguard and promote the welfare of students in the School. To carry out other duties as reasonably requested by the Headteacher and in line with the School Teachers Pay and Conditions document. UPS2 The teacher will make a sustained and substantial contribution to the School based on threshold criteria. UPS3 The teacher will play a critical role in the life of the School. They will provide a role model for teaching and learning, make a distinctive contribution to the raising of students’ standards and contribute effectively to the work of the wider team. They will take advantage of the appropriate opportunities for professional development and use outcomes effectively to improve students’ learning. Performance Management Your annual performance review is based on this overall job description and with particular emphasis on your individual annual targets. These are set in discussion with your line manager and grouped under the headings: Professional Development; Team Improvement Plan; Student Progress.
