Newsletter 57 - Brompton & Sawdon Community Primary School
Brompton and Sawdon Community Primary School Number 57 May 1st 2015 5th September 2014 Dear Parents and Carers, It’s almost that time of year again when we make our final preparations in school for the Summer Term tests, which includes SATs for children in Year 2 and Year 6. The tests take place during the week beginning May 11th and this year we have some exciting developments to share! All children in Y6 are invited to attend our FREE breakfast club from Monday 11th May to Thursday 14th May, where they can enjoy a hot breakfast and some calm and quiet time with Mr Cooper to alleviate any last minute `wobbles’. We hope this will give our children the best possible start to the day and help them to really `show off’ their skills. There are more helpful hints about preparing for SATs week over- leaf. This week our school choir have been out on tour again! They travelled to St Catherine’s Hospice Wykeham in Scarborough with friends from School, where they delighted patients with their latest offerings, including well-known favourites from `The Lion King’ and a very funny `Bus Stop’ song complete with actions!. They brought everyone lots of smiles and were swiftly invited back for another visit, which we are already looking forward to. We have a few reminders to share for our fund-raising projects and thank you to everyone who has already sent in donations. We are still collecting Sainsburys `Active Kids’ vouchers, which last year enabled us to buy a picnic bench for the Early Years playground. We would like to send off our `Readathon’ sponsor money next week, so if families would kindly gather those funds in and send them to Mrs Allen in the office, in an envelope marked `Readathon’, we would be very grateful. And finally, thank you so much to those parents who have already kindly donated sponsor money to Mrs Isaac for running the Manchester 10k in aid of the Y6 London Trip. Donations should be sent in a sealed envelope please. SATs If you have a child in Year 2 or Year 6, they will be completing their SATs (or Standard Assessment Tests) during the week beginning 11th May. Children are tested in Maths and English so that the Government can get a clear picture of what standards look like across the country. SATs also help parents to compare their child's progress with children of the same age nationally. Your child has been working really hard to prepare for the SATs tests. It is only natural that they might feel nervous or concerned about what the week will hold, but here are some top tips on how to help at home: 1. Explain to your child that this is their opportunity to "show off" all their hard work and preparation. We are going to call the week “show off week” in school! 2. Reinforce that your child cannot fail... The most important thing is that they do their best and remember all the things they have been doing in class and in booster lessons recently. 3. Talk to your child about any anxieties or concerns that they have. Which papers in particular worry them? Is there anything you can do at home to help them feel better prepared? 4. Keep in touch with the school and your child's teacher. Explain any worries or concerns your child might have. 5. Do something fun the weekend before the SATs tests to take their mind off them. Don't overdo the revision or practice - it is important your child feels fresh and ready to tackle the tests on Monday morning. 6. Make sure your child has a good night's sleep before each test. 7. Make sure your child has a healthy breakfast each morning (remember there will be a free breakfast for all Y6 children each day). 8. Send your child to school with some healthy snacks to have in between or after the tests and a drink which they can have available at all times. 9. In the evenings of SATs week, keep any work you do at home short. 10. Make sure your child is in school every day of SATs week. If they are feeling unwell it is important that they still come to school and try to do the test. If you are concerned that your child is feeling unwell during this week, please contact school as early as possible. 11. Make sure your child is in school on time every day - the tests start first thing in the morning. Y2 SATs timetable: Monday 11 May 2015: Reading Test, Spelling Test Tuesday 12 May 2015: Writing Wednesday 13 May 2015: Maths Thursday 14 May 2015: Spelling (2) Y6 SATs timetable: Monday 11 May 2015: Reading Test (60 mins) Tuesday 12 May 2015: English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Test (60 mins) Wednesday 13 May 2015: Maths Paper 1 (45 mins) Thursday 14 May 2015: Maths Paper 2 (45 mins) (Children in Y6 do not take a specific writing test. Year 6 teachers assess pupils' writing themselves.) During SATs week, children in Years 3, 4 and 5 will complete our own school’s assessments. Good luck to all of our children with their assessments! Cricket News... We are thrilled that our children are enjoying their cricket sessions with Matthew Curran, under the `Chance to Shine’ programme. Even Alex, the German Bear, got in on the action recently! As part of the programme, we have 50 tickets available for a Headlingley Yorkshire CCC game at so our children will be choosing which match to use the tickets for and may well invite some mums and dads to an evening of sport during the summer months! Initially, these tickets will be allocated to children in Class 3, with any surplus tickets being offered subsequently to children in Class 2. Snainton Cricket Club would love to hear from children interested in taking part in their club coaching sessions. They have teams entered into the local junior league U11s and U9s. The club are currently running coaching sessions at Snainton Playing Field on Wednesday evenings, from 6pm. Children in Year 3 and above are welcome to turn up and join the sessions. For enquiries about younger children joining, please contact first: Matthew Davies Co-ordinator): (Junior Tel: 01723 850812 or 07583 051548 Farewell Miss Nuttall! Children in Class 1 said a fond `farewell’ to Miss Nuttall this week. Since her November, arrival Miss in Nuttall has been a firm favourite with children and staff! We wish her the very best in her future teaching career and thank her for her hard work and dedication. Dojo Request... Whilst we love the Dojo system for encouraging and praising our children for all the excellent things they do in school, we have now discussed as a staff the need to review the exchange of information through the system. During school hours, the best way to contact staff is to see them at the beginning or at the end of the school day. Alternatively, a phone call to the school office might be helpful. However, we will no longer use the Dojo system to receive messages as this is not the most effective way of contacting staff. If there is a need to contact school out of hours, please email the `headteacher’ email address: [email protected] Thank you for your help with this matter. School Photos… The next appointment with our school photographer will be during the afternoon of June 17th. This will be for class photos only. Party Invitations... Please hand any party invitations to your child’s class teacher, for distribution at the end of the day. This will help to avoid any potential upset at the start of the school day. Children and their families needed for a new CBBC show! Hallo Alex! Wie geht’s? Alex, the German Bear, has helped Class 2 children make new friends in a school in Germany this term. Wonderfully assisted by Mrs Gruber, our children wrote letters to the German children, which included details about their appearance and their families and this was all written in German! They also learnt how to sing a German song. Alex came all the way from Kaufbeuren and will be spending 3 weeks with Class 2, finding out as much information as he can. When he returns home he will have lots of extra memories to share with the children in Germany as he has attended cricket sessions, made journey sticks in the forest and even helped to make some forest perfume! We would also like to send him back with some sweets and we would be very grateful if children in Class 2 could each bring in a small item please. Many thanks to Mrs Gruber for her enthusiasm and hard work with the project!
