Roseville also is looking to the
future and expanding in the areas
of business, housing and education. The latter includes talk about
a university complex, said Brian
Jacobson, public information
officer for the city of Roseville.
A university task force is taking on
a long-term project, with schools
sharing space on one campus.
“Businesses come here looking
for a more educated work force,”
Jacobson said. “Roseville is investigating a university center where a
half-dozen universities would
come in and share space.”
The concept would allow a student to do undergraduate work in
one school, then go across the street
to get an upper degree, he said.
“It will take Roseville to the next
level in education,” he said. “It’s a
quicker way and more cost-effective for the student and the school
to share space.”
“The concept the city is trying to
facilitate is a novel approach,”
Roseville Mayor Susan Rohan said.
“I’ve seen one in Denver where
there were three universities that
functioned out of one facility.
Sierra College would be partnering
with other universities. A student
would do two years at Sierra and
then move into an upper-level
school. It’s multiple universities
operating out of one campus.
“The university is not tied to a
particular site,” Rohan said. “The
concept is what is being developed.

Roseville history is tied to the
Gold Rush, when miners came
seeking gold. Some gave it up for
ranching, settling in the area in the
1850s. In 1864, the railroad came
east from Sacramento. The spot
where it crossed a rail line linking
Lincoln and Folsom became known
as Junction. Over the next 40 years,
the community developed into
Roseville.
In 1906, the Southern Pacific
Railroad moved its roundhouse
from Rocklin to Roseville, where it
remains today.
Roseville growth has continued,
with new businesses and residents.
