Introduction
We will continue with Leonard Cohen in the mode of
biblical commentator. In fact, Cohen grew up in a
Jewishly literate home in Montreal, and tells of
studying—among other things—The Book of Isaiah
with his learned grandfather.

At the age of 80 and a grandfather himself, Cohen
released the album Popular Problems in Fall 2014. It
includes the song Born in Chains, which imagines
Cohen, like every Jewish person is asked to imagine
on Passover, as a slave coming out of Egypt.

As we turn towards the ways that Cohen moves
towards ‘ways of resolving conflict in our final set of
sessions, we now visit “The Tower of Song” from
1988’s I’m Your Man. It’s a song where both conflict
and resolution play a part. The song opens with a
comment about the changes of perspective inherent
in getting older. As you listen, think about your mode
for managing conflict in context of your own search
for meaning and how has getting older changed your
approach.
