Our Board of Directors is made up of a group of caring business people who come together and donate their time and experience to be a part of bettering our communities. The Valley Crime Stoppers Board of Directors and staff are extremely grateful for the generosity and support of our sponsors. These sponsors have trusted and supported the mission of Valley Crime Stoppers and with their continued support, Valley Crime Stoppers has been hard at work to help make Fresno and surrounding communities a safer place to live. As we continue to get the word out into the community on the mission of Valley Crime Stoppers and more importantly, the true anonymity of protecting those who come forward with information, it is our ongoing message to “get the bad guys” off the street. The Board and staff spend many hours going out into the community to talk about Valley Crime Stoppers, including events like The Fresno Fair, Madera fair, Vintage Days, and many other Rotary and community events. We continue to work to inform the public that every tip reported is completely anonymous. Without the invaluable help of our media partners; KSEE 24, CBS 47, Cumulus Media, Univision Radio, The Fresno Bee, many outlying local newspapers and Jeffrey Scott Agency, this would not be possible. As we look toward 2016, a big focus will be our continued effort to keep not only the community safe, but a strong educational push toward students and schools in our Central Valley. In 2016 we will introduce Campus Crime Stoppers. The program will be designed to encourage students on the importance of taking ownership and pride in their schools and a strong educational push toward anonymous reporting of dangerous activity including drugs, vandalism, bullying and weapons on campus and in the community. On behalf of the Valley Crime Stoppers Board of Directors, we would like to say thank you for believing in us, our mission, and for enabling us to assist local law enforcement in making a difference in our community. Clovis Police Department Sergant Keith Sparrow 2 VALLE Y CRIME STOPPERS MEDIA PARTNERS WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS Valley Crime Stoppers, one of the most successful crime-fighting tools in our Valley, could not function with nearly the same level of efficacy without the tremendous support we receive from our media partners. From crime scene reenactments, to most wanted ads, and everything in between, our media partners are the engine that not only make this thing go, but make it go with such amazing power and precision. On television, KSEE 24 and CBS 47 are two of our most active partners. CBS 47 produces and airs 30 Crime Stoppers reenactments each week, posting those reenactments to the Eyewitness News Facebook page. CBS 47 created and hosts the Crime Stoppers app, producing content for the app and promoting the app after each “most wanted” segment in each CBS 47 newscast and on-air with a 15 second Crime Stoppers app promo spot. CBS 47 Eyewitness News profiles one “most wanted felon” and one “arrest of the day,” Monday through Friday at 6PM and 11PM. Along with all of the above media outreach, CBS 47 and KSEE 24 each tag every crime-related news story with 498-STOP, and produce Crime Stoppers PSA image campaigns and topical campaigns. In print, The Fresno Bee runs a monthly half-page ad profiling 20-30 of the area’s most wanted criminals, runs full page ads about four times per year, when there is a particular need, and often directs readers to call the 498-STOP number on pertinent news articles. In addition, Clovis Round-Up, Selma Enterprise, Kerman News, Reedley Exponent, Madera Tribune, and Mountain Press all publish monthly most wanted ads specific to their area of distribution. Cumulus Media also contributes a large amount of air time to Valley Crime Stoppers and consistently promotes the 498-STOP number throughout their station group, which includes KMJ, KISS Country, MEGA 97.9, and Y101 radio stations. On Tuesday mornings, KMJ broadcasts Chief Jerry Dyer’s most wanted of the week. Sheriff Margaret Mims’ most wanted of the week runs on Mega 97.9 on Tuesday mornings, and Clovis Chief Matt Basgall’s most wanted runs every other Tuesday morning on KISS Country. Univision Radio is also on board with Valley Crime Stoppers and uses its stations to reach the previously underserved Spanish-speaking members of the community. For agency work, Jeffrey Scott Agency coordinates placement for paid media campaigns; designs artwork for monthly print ANNUAL REPORT • 2015 ADDITIONAL PARTNERS CBS Outdoor Kerman News Vida en el Valle Reedley Exponent Auberry Mountain Press Clovis Round-Up Sierra Star ads; designs and produces all collateral material; designs and maintains the website; and writes, designs, and distributes all major (and most minor) campaigns. Thanks in large part to these media partners, who annually give upwards of $300,000 per company, Valley Crime Stoppers has been able to take a large bite out of crime and has received national recognition as a shining example of cooperation centered on one shared goal: keeping our community safe for our citizens. Many criminals are finding out what we’ve known for a while - when our community comes together, they’ve got nowhere to run to and nowhere to hide! 3 2015 TOTALS Narcotics Violations 123 Auto Theft 72 Burglary 67 Fraud 54 Robbery 48 Weapons 47 Parole Violation 39 ADW / Shooting 35 Spousal Abuse 27 Grand Theft 23 Stolen Property 18 Child Abuse Homicide Felony Hit & Run Felony Vandalism / Graffiti Rape Felony DUI Arson Prostitution ARRESTS 25 50 100 5 5 4 2 2 2 1 125 Wanted Persons 795 Narcotics 589 Auto Theft 109 Robbery 95 Homicide 87 ADW / Shootings Burglary Fraud Weapons Violations Parole Violations Grand Theft Spousal Abuse Prostitution Hit & Run Child Abuse Stolen Property Arson Animal Cruelty Alcohol to Minors CRIME TIPS 200 4 75 14 400 79 77 70 66 55 47 35 29 27 26 20 7 6 5 600 800 VALLE Y CRIME STOPPERS STATS Tips Arrests 2,226 603 Property Recovered $331,000 Narcotics Recovered $284,000 Guns Recovered Rewards 31 $77,000 ADDITIONAL STATS Wanted Suspects Profiled in Valley Newspapers 2,000 Felony Suspects Profiled on KSEE 24 and CBS 47 260 Success Stories Profiled on KSEE 24 and CBS 47 260 REENACTMENTS 15 Homicides Filmed and Aired Felony Hit & Runs Filmed and Aired 5 Robberies Filmed and Aired 2 Kidnappings Filmed and Aired Felony Suspects Profiled on KMJ 52 2 Burglary Filmed and Aired Felony Suspects Profiled MEGA 97.9 52 1 Felony Suspects Profiled on KISS Country 93.7 24 Home Invasion Robbery Filmed and Aired 1 SINCE THE BEGINNING MEDIA PARTNER ARRESTS KSEE 24 / CBS 47 103 Fresno Bee 93 Web Tips 89 Clovis Round Up 47 Vida En El Valle 44 Reedley Exponent 41 Kerman News 36 Cumulus Radio 34 Selma Enterprise 28 Madera Tribune 27 Facebook 24 CS Schools 15 Auberry Times 7 Fresno Fair 6 Madera Fair 3 ANNUAL REPORT • 2015 OCTOBER 1993 - DECEMBER 2015 CODE NUMBERS ISSUED NARCOTICS RECOVERED TOTAL ARRESTS GUNS RECOVERED CASES CLEARED REWARDS PAID PROPERTY RECOVERED REWARDS UNCLAIMED 35,241 12,490 12,935 $3,177,711 $11,599,710 721 $1,338,395 $297,875 5 2015 IN REVIEW HIDDEN COMPARTMENT TRAINING The battle on the streets is becoming more difficult every day for law enforcement, so in November of 2015, Valley Crime Stoppers invited law enforcement from throughout the San Joaquin Valley to attend a crucial course on discovering hidden compartments during traffic stops. This training was instructed by Sheriff Mike Lewis of Maryland, a certified Master Instructor through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Sheriff Lewis has been judicially recognized by federal and state courts as an expert in highway interdiction, hidden compartments, and drug valuation. Valley Crime Stoppers hosted the entire hidden compartment event, which attracted over 300 law enforcement officers for an all-day training seminar representing all areas of service. On another note, we’d like to send a big “thank you” to the Fresno Police Department’s C.O.P.s Program (Citizens on Patrol), as many volunteers came out and offered their time to educate the community on Valley Crime Stoppers. Volunteers from the C.O.P.s Program also passed out fun items, as well as wrist bands with parents’ phone numbers on them, in order to increase the safety of children in our community. THE NEW VALLEY CRIME STOPPERS APP! The Valley Crime Stoppers app was developed in partnership with CBS 47, partners solving crime. This all new app has many features that we were very proud to premier in 2015. The app features the “most wanted” criminals along with recent Crime Stoppers stories that were featured on CBS 47 Eyewitness News. When you download the app you will also be able to see Crime Stoppers reenactments and of course the ability to submit an anonymous tip. The all new Crime Stoppers app outlines how our program works and shows results and statistics on how Valley Crime Stoppers is working for the community. The app is available in the Apple and Google Stores. 6 VALLE Y CRIME STOPPERS SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT PAPÉ KEEPS THE CRIMINALS MOVING TO THE SLAMMER A long-time supporter of Valley Crime Stoppers, Papé has been a Gold Level Sponsor since 2009 and recently became our first Emerald Level Sponsor. Papé’s roots reach back to 1938 when their founder acquired his first capital equipment dealership in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Today, they’re the leading supplier of heavy equipment, material handling equipment, agricultural and forestry equipment, trucks, engineered warehouse products, and expertise. Founder E.C. Papé arrived in Oregon in 1938 to work in a dealership selling Allis-Chalmers industrial equipment. Word quickly spread about his customer service, commitment, and dependability – so E.C. started his own eponymous company. By the late 1960s, the company introduced the era of the rubber-tired skidder to the Northwest timber industry. In 1990, Papé expanded the business to include Hyster dealerships in Oregon, Washington, and California, forming The Papé Group of Companies - which now includes Papé Machinery, Papé Material Handling, Papé Kenworth, Ditch Witch Northwest, and Engineered Products. Now, four generations strong, the value of an honest handshake and a square deal continue to drive Papé’s success and that of their customers. It’s a promise their founder made over 75 years ago – a promise their commitment to Valley Crime Stoppers shows that they are serious about keeping.
