Furthermore, the opportunity to confess sins with a contrite heart and a firm purpose of amendment will not only be available every Saturday from 1:30 P.M. – 2:30 P.M. and by appointment as it currently is, but an additional hour of mercy will be offered for Confession every Friday from 4:00 P.M. – 5:00 P.M. It is my hope that many will come home for these Sacraments and in the words of Pope Francis: “obtain the true and generous forgiveness of the Father Who renews all with His Presence.” The Real Presence of God we know as Catholics, remains with us always, even until the end of the age (cf. Saint Matthew XXVIII:20). That is why during the Holy Season of Lent, on Holy Thursday, members of various groups associated with Our Holy Redeemer, after celebrating the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, spend one hour with Him in the Most Blessed Sacrament until He is “taken away” from us at Midnight. That hour is what He looked for from Saints Peter, John, and James when after the Last Supper, He took them into the Garden of Gethsemane. It is an hour that invites us to watch and pray (cf. Saint Luke XXII). As the Pastor of this local church in Freeport, I am asking you to please make a commitment to “spend one hour with Him” outside of Mass every week by coming to our Perpetual Adoration Chapel. “Your commitment to your Perpetual Adoration Chapel” (wrote Bishop Murphy on 6 January 2003 in commemoration of our Parish’s one hundredth anniversary) “is a testimony to the belief that all your activities as a parish flow from your life of prayer.” So it was in 2003; so it is now in 2015; and so it will be during the upcoming Jubilee Year (8 December 2015 – 20 November 2016) and beyond! Please use today’s bulletin to select “a day of the week” and “a time of the day” when you can come home to “watch and pray” with Our Holy Redeemer in our Perpetual Adoration Chapel. It is my hope to have at least three people watching and praying every hour of the day; every day of the week, throughout the Holy Year (8 December 2015 – 20 November 2016). With your one hour in the Perpetual Adoration Chapel, and our additional hours of Confessional Mercy and Holy Mass, together we will help – in the words of Pope Francis – “enable the celebration of the Holy Year to be for all believers a true moment of encounter with the mercy of God … a living experience of the closeness of the Father … a genuine experience of God’s mercy.” In Union with Mary, Our Mother of Mercy, Father Arcoleo MY TIME WITH HIM IN THE PERPETUAL ADORATION CHAPEL Yes, I will “spend one hour with Him” in our Perpetual Adoration Chapel. I have indicated below when I commit myself to “watch and pray”. Work Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good Morning! After having reflected on celebration in the life of the family, today we will ponder a complimentary element, that of work. Both are part of God’s creative design, celebration and work. Work, as it is commonly said, is necessary for maintaining the family, for raising children, for ensuring a dignified life for our loved ones. In speaking about a serious, honest person, the most beautiful thing that can be said is: “he or she is a worker”, one who works, one who in a community doesn’t just live off of others. There are many Argentinians today, I see, and I will say what we say: “No vive de arriba” [Don’t just live it up]. And indeed work, in its many forms, beginning with that in the home, is also concerned with the common good. Where does one learn this hard-working lifestyle? First of all, one learns it in the family. The family teaches work through the example of the parents: the father and the mother who work for the good of the family and of society. In the Gospel, the Holy Family of Nazareth appears as a family of workers, and Jesus Himself is called “Son of a carpenter” (Mt 13:55) and even “the carpenter” (Mk 6:3). And Saint Paul would not fail to warn Christians: “If anyone will not work, let him not eat” (2 Thess 3:10) — that’s a good recipe for losing weight, you don’t work, you don’t eat! The Apostle explicitly refers to the false spiritualism of some who indeed live off their brothers and sisters “not doing any work” (2 Thess 3:11). Commitment to work and the spiritual life, in the Christian conception, are not at all at odds with one another. It is important to understand this properly! Prayer and work can and must be in harmony, as Saint Benedict teaches. The absence of work damages the spirit, just as the absence of prayer damages practical activity. Work — I repeat, in its many forms — is proper to the human person. It expresses the dignity of being created in the image of God. Thus, it is said that work is sacred. And thus, managing one’s occupation is a great human and social responsibility, which cannot be left in the hands of the few or unladen onto some divinized “market”. Causing the loss of jobs means causing serious harm to society. It makes me sad to see people without work, who don’t find work and don’t have the dignity of bringing bread home. And I rejoice greatly when I see governments go to great lengths to find jobs and try to see to it that everyone has work. Work is sacred, work gives dignity to a family. We have to pray that no family is left without work. Therefore, work too, like celebration, is part of God’s creative plan. In the Book of Genesis, the theme of the earth like a back yard, entrusted to the care and cultivation of man (2, 8:15), is anticipated by a very moving passage: “In the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, when no plant of the field was yet in the earth and no herb of the field had yet sprung up — for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no man to till the ground; but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground” (2:4-6). It’s not romanticism, it is God’s revelation; and we are responsible for understanding and implementing it. The Encyclical Laudato Si’, which proposes an integral ecology, also contains this message: the beauty of the earth and the dignity of work were made to be united. The two go together: the earth becomes beautiful when it is worked by man. When work is detached from God’s covenant with man and woman, and it is separated from its spiritual qualities, when work is held hostage by the logic of profit alone and human life is disregarded, the degradation of the soul contaminates everything: even the air, water, grass, food ... the life of society is corrupted and the habitat breaks down. And the consequences fall most of all on the poor and on poor families. The modern organization of work sometimes shows a dangerous tendency to consider the family a burden, a weight, a liability for the productivity of labour. But let us ask ourselves: what productivity? And for whom? The so-called “smart city” is undoubtedly rich in services and organization; but, for example, it is often hostile to children and the elderly. At times those in charge are interested in managing individuals as a workforce, assembling and utilizing them or throwing them away on the basis of economic benefit. The family is a great workbench. When the organization of work holds it hostage, or even blocks its path, then we can be certain that human society has begun to work against itself! In this circumstance, Christian families are posed a great challenge and a great mission. They bring to the field the foundations of God’s Creation: the identity is the bond between man and woman, the procreation of children, the work which harnesses the earth and renders the world habitable. The loss of these foundations is a very serious matter and there are already too many cracks in the common home! It is not an easy task. Sometimes it may seem to family associations as though they are like David facing Goliath ... but we know how that challenge turned out! It takes faith and shrewdness. In this difficult moment of our history, may God grant us the ability to accept with joy and hope His call, the call to work to give dignity to ourselves and to our families. Please Come Home and join us for a Holy Hour as we pray for Life, Marriage, & Religious Liberty Sunday, 29 November 2015 8:00 P.M. in the church Now a Word from Our Saints (Pope Saint John Paul II, Familiaris Consortio, #86) And now, at the end of my pastoral message, which is intended to draw everyone's attention to the demanding yet fascinating roles of the Christian family, I wish to invoke the protection of the Holy Family of Nazareth. Through God's mysterious design, it was in that family that the Son of God spent long years of a hidden life. It is therefore the prototype and example for all Christian families. It was unique in the world. Its life was passed in anonymity and silence in a little town in Palestine. It underwent trials of poverty, persecution and exile. It glorified God in an incomparably exalted and pure way. And it will not fail to help Christian families-indeed, all the families in the world-to be faithful to their day-to-day duties, to bear the cares and tribulations of life, to be open and generous to the needs of others, and to fulfill with joy the plan of God in their regard. Saint Joseph was "a just man," a tireless worker, the upright guardian of those entrusted to his care. May he always guard, protect, and enlighten families. May the Virgin Mary, who is the Mother of the Church, also be the Mother of "the Church of the home." Thanks to her motherly aid, may each Christian family really become a "little Church" in which the mystery of the Church of Christ is mirrored and given new life. May she, the Handmaid of the Lord, be an example of humble and generous acceptance of the will of God. May she, the Sorrowful Mother at the foot of the Cross, comfort the sufferings and dry the tears of those in distress because of the difficulties of their families. May Christ the Lord, the Universal King, the King of Families, be present in every Christian home as He was at Cana, bestowing light, joy, serenity and strength. On the solemn day dedicated to His Kingship I beg of Him that every family may generously make its own contribution to the coming of His Kingdom in the world-"a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, a kingdom of justice, love, a nd peace," towards which history is journeying. I entrust each family to Him, to Mary, and to Joseph. To their hands and their hearts I offer this Exhortation: may it be they who present it to you, venerable Brothers and beloved sons and daughters, and may it be they who open your hearts to the light that the Gospel sheds on every family. THANKSGIVING 1789 BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA A PROCLAMATION “Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor - and Whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me "to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness." Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be – That we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks – for His kind care and protection of the People of this country previous to their becoming a Nation – for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of His providence, which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war –for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed – for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted, for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which He hath been pleased to confer upon us. And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions – to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually – to render our national government a blessing to all the People, by constantly being a government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed – to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shown kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord – To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and Us – and generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.” Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789. GEORGE WASHINGTON THANKSGIVING 1863 BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA A PROCLAMATION The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defense have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed. Done at the City of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the Unites States the Eighty-eighth. FAITH AND EDUCATION SCHOOL’S IN: DRIVE CAREFULLY (both on and off the road) NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL (516) 379-8660 Mark Bevilacqua knew well the story of The De La Salle School due to the involvement of his parents, Marty and Susan Bevilacqua, in our mission. His sudden and tragic death in a motorcycle accident on Sunrise Highway on 27 June is a loss to all of us. At the request of Mark’s parents, The De La Salle School is using funds donated to our school in Mark’s memory to work in partnership with Literacy Nassau to conduct a program for adult educational literacy for our students’ parents (Literacy Nassau, located on Smith Street, was also a beneficiary of donations in Mark’s memory.) Many of our students are immigrants or sons of immigrants, and many of their parents speak little or no English. It is encouraging to report that more than one-quarter of the families of our students have at least one adult enrolled in this program every Tuesday evening at our school. During the pilot 30 week program currently underway a bilingual literary specialist works with the parents to increase their own English proficiency, and also to help them understand the educational process. Since so many of the educational communications are online, parents will be introduced to this technology so they can more easily help and keep track of the academic progress of their son(s). While participating in the program the parents will have the opportunity to borrow the Chromebooks to continue their learning exploration at home. Education is the key to success and empowerment for our students and their families. It is exciting to see the initial success of this new venture and it is a fitting tribute to the memory of Mark Bevilacqua. 22 November 2015 – Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe B Sunday Readings: Daniel VII: 13-14; Revelation I: 5-8; Saint John XVIII 33b-37 Student’s Name: ____________________________________________________ Class Day/Session: __________________________________________________ Catechist Name: ____________________________________________________ Mass Time (Circle One): Sat: 5:00 PM 7:00 PM Sun: 7:00 AM 8:00 AM 9:30 AM 11:30 AM 1:00 PM GOSPEL QUESTIONS: (Religious Education Students please answer ALL questions) Fill in the blanks: Pilate said to Jesus, "Are you the ___________________________ of the Jews?" … What have you done?" SCRIPTURE REFLECTION As we celebrate the feast of our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, we hear Jesus say “my kingdom does not belong to this world”. Then He says those famous words that have resounded in Christian hearts throughout the ages: “Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to My voice” (See John 18:33b-37). How do these words relate to the fact that Jesus is our King? We need to understand that in the Oriental mentality of the Scriptures to listen to someone meant to obey that individual. Jesus is saying more than just simply to listen to His Words. He is implying obedience to His Words, that is, to accept Him as King. Every action we take, every decision we make, every word we utter, shows whether or not we accept Jesus as our King. Do we? Do we ask ourselves, what would Jesus say? What would He do if He was in my shoes? In order to know the answer we must study the Gospels. We must learn how He reacted to the different situations that confronted Him. Then it is up to us to respond as Mary did: “I am the handmaid of the Lord.” Imitating that attitude will show that we accept Jesus Christ as our King. Familias Heridas (II) Queridos hermanos y hermanas, ¡buenos días! THE KING OF THE JEWS Pilate said to Jesus, “Are You the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “Do you say this on your own or have others told you about Me? Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? … What have You done?” Jesus answered, “My Kingdom does not belong to this world. If My Kingdom did belong to this world, My attendants would be fighting to keep Me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, My Kingdom is not here.” So Pilate said to Him, “Then You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify the truth.” Saint John XVIII: 33b-37 Directions: Find the words below from today’s Scripture reading in the puzzle.
