annual report to the river communities
Annual Report to the River Communities A message from River Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Ben Moore III River Hospital Board of Trustees We are very grateful to the members of the River Communities who have been extremely dedicated in supporting us through the eleven years which we have functioned as River Hospital. This support has enabled us to survive the initial challenges of a new Hospital; to grow and become more financially secure, and now to face the substantial changes in our future which health care reform is demanding. Chairman Joseph Russell These future changes are upon us and require us to think about how we can collaborate with other institutions to provide higher quality and less expensive care for our communities. Fortunately, we have been hard at work preparing for these challenges by working very diligently on the North Country Initiative (NCI) which is a six hospital collaboration. Our medical staff, led by our Medical Director, Dr. Lauren Roman, has been very active in taking on these new requirements; especially in developing advanced systems of quality monitoring for our entire North Country Region. We are also preparing for the future by increasing our number of providers in primary care, emergency care, inpatient care and surgical care. With these additions we will be able to significantly increase the types of services available at River Hospital and better serve the River Communities. To support these initiatives we are asking that the Foundation support our acquisition of a new state-of-the-art 64 slice Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner which will significantly increase our diagnostic capability for the medical and surgical services that we provide. Foundation support of this vital acquisition will help to ensure that River Hospital continues to provide the best care that we can for all of the patients in our the River Communities. Vice Chairman Norman Snyder Treasurer Jeanne Snow Secretary Robert Toole Emeritus Richard Bennett Harriet Burris, MD Don Cerosoli, Sr. Patricia Chalk Laura Coles Dan Gregory, MD Ross Jones Richard Munro Dr. Robert Tague Lynn Brown Alicia Dewey James Donegan Craig Garlock Col. Stanley Gould Richard Macsherry Ronald Miller Ronald Randall Fred Schmitt Ronald Thomson Stephanie Weiss A message from River Hospital Foundation Chairman, Ray “Smitty” Smith River Hospital Foundation Board of Directors This year commemorates our 11th anniversary at River Hospital and we are ecstatic to celebrate our progress with River Hospital Foundation and our generous supporters. This progress has been a result of your loyalty by ensuring the River Communities’ access to essential health care. Your dedication and continuous support has played a crucial role in the lives of those who make the Thousand Island region their home, place of work and summer vacation. Chairman Ray “Smitty” Smith Here at River Hospital we are consistently striving to not only maintain our services, but to also improve each individual experience; an experience that could be a quick visit to Convenient Care, an unexpected trip to our Emergency Department or a surgical procedure that is performed in our Ambulatory Surgery Unit. Regardless of the reason for the visit, we provide the same level of care to everyone thanks to supporters like you. In order to continue to serve you and the River Communities, the Foundation and our charitable donors are being asked fulfill the hospital’s request for a new state-of-the-art 64 slice Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner. This CT Scanner will significantly improve the diagnostic capabilities for services provided by River Hospital. For eleven years your contributions have helped make River Hospital a committed and reliable health care provider. River Hospital is your community hospital. We exist to serve you and your loved ones-to provide hope, healing and recovery. Everyone at River Hospital and River Hospital Foundation thanks you for over a decade of support, generosity and stewardship. We look forward to the next decade, and many more to follow. 1st Vice Chairman Kathy Morris 2nd Vice Chairman Sue Rapant Treasurer Ken VanHatten Secretary Lynn Brown Jeniffer Alberry Heather Gazdik Jay Stewart Patty Wagoner Steve Yelle Emeritus Laura Coles Advancing Diagnostic Services at River Hospital At River Hospital we are constantly looking for more efficient ways to meet your health care needs. A primary component to effective health care is the diagnostic process. With such diagnostic services it is possible to diagnose and treat you and your loved ones with improved quality and precision. Our Radiology Department plays a vital role in this process. The Radiology Department currently has a 16 slice Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner that has served our community very well. However, as technology grows and blossoms, so do our services. Attaining a new state-of-the-art 64 slice CT Scanner will be a fundamental asset to our diagnostic process. It will allow your doctor to identify various infections or diseases much earlier with an increased amount of accuracy. As many of you know, early detection is vital within the health care field. It allows us to diagnose and treat your needs before it may be too late. As an aid in early detection the 64 slice CT Scanner also provides diagnostic assessment of neurovascular diseases like aneurysms and stenosis. The new CT Scanner accomplishes this with sharper images and contrast. This upgrade will also improve efficiency in exam times due to faster image acquisition. One of the most significant components of the new CT Scanner is the reduction in exposure by as much as 60% less radiation than the 16 slice CT Scanner. This improves your quality of care and your quality of care is our primary concern here at River Hospital. Spotlight on Dr. Gharagozloo, Cheif of Radiology & Radiation Safety Officer Dr. Gharagozloo and his wife, April, have been avid supporters of River Hospital since its inception. Their generosity and continuous servitude has not wavered in the last eleven years. When you speak with “Dr. G”, as we affectionately refer to him, his passion is undeniably contagious. It is a passion that comes from a story that most of us have heard; some of us have even experienced. In 2003 Dr. G witnessed the birth of River Hospital as we know it today. What he saw was a community that was willing to give their time, their hard earned money and most importantly their hearts. As a result the community received a hospital that would look “I work with a team that is out for their health at every doing what we went into turn. health care to do, save lives.” For the past eleven years Dr. G has seen the many lives that River Hospital has saved. He has also played an integral part in its success; a success that he emphasizes wouldn’t be possible without the support of our community and leadership from our CEO, Ben Moore III. S upport the C a mpaign for a 64 Slice CT Scanner In 2012 our goal at River Hospital and the Foundation was to procure new digital mammography equipment for the Radiology Department. We were able to put a price on the equipment, but we are not able to put a price on the lives it has saved. Likewise, the CT Scanner will help meet the goal of our mission in the following ways: • Provide diagnostic assessment of neurovascular diseases • Sharper images and contrast • Exposure to as much as 60% less radiation • Improve efficiency River Hospital Foundation is committed to assisting River Hospital in providing the highest quality of care for the River Communities. Your contribution to the CT Scanner Campaign will make a difference and touch countless lives. River Community Wellness Program Since opening in February 2013, the River Community Wellness Program (RCWP) at River Hospital has served active duty military personnel stationed at Ft. Drum in the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) treatment program. This Program has seen tremendous growth in its initial year. It has expanded in the number of soldiers served from 6 to 30 on a daily basis for an average length of stay between 4 and 6 weeks. Since inception more than 100 soldiers have successfully graduated from this program. As a result of this program it has become possible to offer behavioral health services to the River Communities. The PTSD treatment program is the first of its kind in the United States. Through collaboration with Ft. Drum Behavioral Health Services, RCWP provides a safe environment for soldiers suffering from PTSD. RCWP serves as an intensive option for mental health services to reduce potential admissions of service members for inpatient care, focusing instead on building coping skills and supports in the community. The program treatment offers Cognitive Processing Therapy, Group and Individual Therapy, Creative Arts Therapy, Movement Therapy, Peer to Peer Therapy, Imaginal and In Vivo Exposure Therapy, as well as, Psychiatry and Medication Management. When RCWP opened its doors it occupied 1,756 square feet in the Hospital’s former administrative offices. One year later “By providing our soldiers a the program occupies 4,501 square feet - the entire building. A Welcome Wall safe place for treatment, it has been added to the building. The soldiers in the program chose the quote “The Healing of Your Invisible Wounds Begins Here” to be placed on the wall becomes easier to talk about along with handprints of each solider welcomed into the program. their feelings. Allowing the soldiers to open up freely has proved to be a vital part of the therapeutic process,” Bradley Frey, River Community Wellness Program Director In addition to a growing need for space to serve patients, there was a need to increase the number of staff. The Program began with a psychiatrist, psychologist, licensed medical social worker (LMSW), creative art therapist and the program director to facilitate the therapies for the military and community. Over the past year, four mental health counselors, a part-time psychiatrist, a post-doctorate psychologist and nurse case manager have joined our staff. RCWP Soldier Art Show at Bay House Artisans “Chaos” “Peace” The RCWP Soldier Art Show will kick off in June at Bay House Artisans, Alexandria Bay. The artwork shown here is among the many pieces which will be displayed from June 19th to the 29th. All of the artwork displayed was made during art therapy sessions by participants in the PTSD program. “Chaos” was created by a soldier upon entry into RCWP and “Peace” was the depiction of progress toward the end of treatment. It truly illustrates the struggle that is taking place internally for those suffering from PTSD all over the world. For more information about the Art Show please contact Andrea Pfeiffer, Director of Marketing and Community Relations, at (315) 482-1270. RCWP Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Mask Project A service member worked on this mask for quite some time but got to a point that he needed to set it aside…it was just too triggering. During the time away from the project he began working with clay and ended up producing this sculpture which he called “PTSD – my inner demon.” This manifested as a visual representation of what he feels he carries inside every day. As he was processing these pieces with the group he realized that subconsciously these two pieces fit perfectly together; the sculptures eyes and nose line up perfectly with the mask. Remember these pieces were done at two separate times and neither one was referenced as the other piece was being made. Both of these pieces speak volumes to the power of utilizing creative modalities to help express the service members’ thoughts, feelings and emotions and giving them back their voice. “My PTSD has changed me… fragmented me. I am raw emotionally with wounds that won’t heal. I am just a piece of my former self… broken and vulnerable.” Spotlight on Kim Kernehan, RCWP Creative Arts Therapist Kim Kernehan provides a crucial aspect of care to individuals at the River Community Wellness Program (RCWP). She works with soldiers with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in an innovative way that allows them to open up and channel negative emotions into positive ones. Kim utilizes alternative modalities to help our soldiers learn to express their thoughts, feelings and emotions that they have long suppressed. This is just the beginning of recovery. A fundamental element of their recovery is founded in Creative Art Therapy. Creative Art therapy is used to reduce debilitating symptoms, provide opportunities for expression and resolution of painful memories, and enhance stress reduction through art-based relaxation techniques and coping skills. In particular, art therapy helps by: • Reducing anxiety and mood disorders common to military personnel with PTSD • Reducing behaviors that interfere with emotional and cognitive functioning • Externalizing, verbalizing, and resolving memories of traumatic events • Reactivating positive emotions, self-worth, and self-esteem Through Creative Art Therapy Kim has helped so many soldiers. Her dedication is greatly appreciated and admired. A large portion of Kim’s motivation and drive comes from a very personal place. Seven years ago her son-in-law, Dan, “Mental Health services are was taken from her family far too soon. He was killed in Iraq on May 12th, 2007. Kim witnessed firsthand what it was like for her family to generally lacking across go through this tragedy. She also shares in the pain that Dan’s comrades the country and it is so good experience as they lost their friends so suddenly. From that point she to see that River Hospital has dedicated herself to Creative Art Therapy and the healing of this is taking such a proactive population. approach to helping alleviate the silent suffering of those River Community Wellness Program is so grateful for Kim’s dedication, strength, heart and perseverance to continue to fight for our soldiers. with mental health issues.” The River Legacy The River Communities have a history of being a great place to live. Tara Amato, Physical Therapist Grateful Patient & Breast Cancer Survivor Tara’s story is one that we hold dear to our hearts. You cannot speak to Tara without smiling; it is impossible. She is as kindhearted and caring as they come, and her many patients can attest to that. Regardless of her recent trials, her positivity continues to radiate. At Ladies Night Out Tara Amato shared her story with several women and she would like to share it with you. Despite Tara’s health conscious habits, and much to her surprise, she received the kind of news that can shake “Thanks to all of up anyone’s world. In October 2013 she was the services that I diagnosed with breast cancer. She did not received at River have any symptoms or common risk factors. Hospital, I am a breast It all began when Tara scheduled her annual cancer survivor.” check-up with Dr. Andrew Ogden at River Family Health Center. At her appointment Dr. Ogden insisted that she incorporate mammograms into her routine health regime. Void of any symptoms, Tara brushed off his suggestion. Her reasoning was if there was a lump it would have been obvious. Finally agreeing to her doctor’s recommendation she scheduled an appointment for a mammogram at River Hospital’s Radiology Department within 24 hours after her appointment. Tara quickly learned that her results were abnormal and she needed to follow up with a specialist. She began to reassure herself that nothing could be wrong. She was healthy and felt great. A referral was made; in less than one week Tara was able to see Dr. Kiri Brandy at River Family Health Center. Dr. Brandy confirmed it was indeed breast cancer. What is so intrinsic about Tara’s story is the doctors were insistent on this routine screening. With the availability of the new digital mammography equipment at River Hospital the doctors were able to detect her breast cancer early. Early detection is a vital aspect of any diagnosis. As a result of this routine screening Tara was able to have surgery quickly and efficiently to remove the affected tissue. She did not require radiation or hormone therapy. On behalf of Tara and others who share in similar stories, we are grateful to everyone who helped reach our goal to acquire the new digital mammography equipment. River Hospital would not be able to offer such quality services to the River Communities without your commitment. Thank you!
