BULLETIN BOARD An annual update from the Women’s Board of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago | Winter 2015 CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE For more than half a century, RIC has helped adults and children to recover from injuries, diseases and other medical conditions that affect their ability to function, their health and the quality of their lives. We look forward to building on that legacy in our new research hospital, the Ability Institute of RIC. Scheduled to open in early 2017, the Ability Institute will be the first-ever rehabilitation hospital to treat patients through a truly integrated translational model. The Institute has been designed specifically to bring the best clinicians, researchers and patients together — in the same space — to collaborate in real time during therapy. In this way, the latest research developments can be “translated” directly to patient treatment. This revolutionary model will lead to better, faster outcomes. It also draws the patient into the process more quickly and fully, a factor that we know increases motivation and improves results. The Ability Institute will introduce its precedent-setting translational patient care through five Innovation Centers: • • • • • Brain Innovation Center Spinal Cord Innovation Center Nerve, Muscle & Bone Innovation Center Pediatric Rehabilitation Innovation Center Cancer Rehabilitation Innovation Center Each Innovation Center will focus on an area of biomedical science with extraordinary promise. Our expertise in each area distinguishes RIC, and our growing research investment in these patient segments will make the Ability Institute the world’s leading destination for rehabilitation. The 1.2 million-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility will enhance exponentially RIC’s capacity to serve patients and advance research, while also expanding outreach in training and disseminating knowledge around the globe. Construction commenced in late July 2013, and the project is moving along well within budget. The garage structure is completed. The patient tower structure is in progress with steel erection completed. (More than 8,000 tons of steel will support the building!) Installation of the glass “curtain wall” is 75 percent complete for the garage, with the podium installation under way. Mechanical systems installation has begun, and the project has accepted major systems such as emergency generators. To witness daily progress, visit the live webcam bit.ly/RICBuildCam. Women’s Board gifts have been an integral part of the mounting success of the Advance Human Ability Campaign. Through the generosity of the Women’s Board, other RIC boards and numerous supporters, RIC has already secured more than 63 percent of the $300 million campaign goal! Visit www.advancehumanability.org to learn more about RIC’s vision to revolutionize physical medicine and rehabilitation. RIC DINNER DANCE The RIC Women’s Board Dinner Dance took place on Oct. 26, 2014, and raised more than $1.1 million dollars for RIC’s clinical care, research and quality-of-life programs. Held at the Bridgeport Art Center, which overlooks the stunning Chicago skyline, the elegant event welcomed 450 guests for dinner, dancing and a live auction. On behalf of the Women’s Board and event co-chairs Kristi Brown, Carrie Grant and Britt Taner, Women’s Board President Susie Mackenzie greeted guests before the live auction. Generously donated auction items included a trip to Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon, two Harry Winston pieces of jewelry and a luxurious golf trip to Royal Dornoch in Scotland, including airfare on United Airlines and a stay at the famed Links House. Co-Chairs Britt Taner and Carrie Grant and President Susie Mackenzie RIC President & CEO Dr. Joanne C. Smith shared a video featuring architectural renderings of RIC’s new research hospital — the Ability Institute of RIC — and thanked everyone for their support, giving special kudos to the Women’s Board for their record-breaking fundraising! Jacque and James Nygaard Kristi and Kevin Brown “For decades, this Board has been a critical part of RIC’s success, and it is great to celebrate this unparalleled event with them.” — Tom Sullivan, Senior Vice President Advancement & President RIC Foundation LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT SUSAN F. MACKENZIE A wonderful sense of teamwork and family developed over the year — among members of the Women’s Board and throughout the RIC organization. This year’s gala was a great example. Chaired by Kristi Brown, Carrie Grant and Britt Taner, the RIC Dinner Dance was an “all-Board” event, combining the generosity of the Foundation Board, the Governing Board and the Women’s Board to raise more than $1 million for the hospital. By all measures, 2014 was an exciting year for the RIC Women’s Board. Although there was a great deal of change, we have come through it stronger and more committed than ever, realizing that flexibility makes us more resilient and vital. We look forward to 2015 with 10 new board members, each a talented individual whose experience will enhance our ability to achieve our ambitious goals. With a renewed focus, coupled with an extremely capable and energetic staff, we see 2015 as a bright year for RIC and the Women’s Board. Among 2014 highlights was forging a charitable partnership with the Palm Beach Art, Antiques & Jewelry Show in their first-ever visit to Chicago. Leslie Kennedy and Kitty Freidheim secured the partnership, raised a large percentage of the funds and planned a beautiful and well-attended Preview Party. The new show and venue recaptured Chicago’s attention and raised more than $230,000 for RIC, a record high for this event. Turning the traditional format upside down, the chairs hosted a Friday-night dinner dance in one of the city’s most beautiful loft spaces — The Bridgeport Art Center. Most importantly, our partnership with PJH & Associates opened our eyes to new and promising possibilities for this event in the future. Under the leadership of Robin Armour and Lori Komisar, the Women’s Board continues its work on the Advance Human Ability Campaign, support which is vital to realizing the dream of the Ability Institute of RIC. To date, active members have committed more than $3 million directly to the campaign. Additionally, at our spring luncheon in June, we were proud to present a check in the amount of $485,000 to Dr. Joanne C. Smith, RIC’s president and chief executive officer, to support our commitments to Charity Care, the Donnelley Ethics Program, the Virginia Wadsworth Wirtz Sports Center, the LIFE Center, the Health and Fitness Center, Therapeutic Recreation, Pediatrics/Child Life and the Vocational Rehabilitation Program. As we enjoyed our annual holiday traditions of delivering poinsettias to the patients and hosting the Pediatric Christmas Party, we were reminded of the powerful legacy and impact of the Women’s Board, founded in 1961. Through the continuing patronage and wise counsel of our past presidents and senior members, we remain true to our mission. Part of our beautiful legacy we owe to the dedication of Joanne Crown, a long-time Women’s Board leader who passed away in January. We will miss her greatly. (See p. 10.) We send special thanks to Pat Booth for her help in educating our new members on the history of the Women’s Board; to Jill Almeida for her sound advice and support; and to Connie Coolidge for her unwavering dedication to the Women’s Board, while also donning many other important RIC hats. Our role in supporting this extraordinary hospital has continued to evolve over the years, and our passion for the organization remains stronger than ever. We look forward to the completion of the new world-class Ability Institute and all its enhanced capability...and yes, we learned once again that change is, in fact, very good. Many thanks for your wonderful help and support over the past year. Warmest Wishes, Susie Mackenzie A NOTE FROM RIC’S PRESIDENT & CEO DR. JOANNE C. SMITH of our field of medicine. The world will never be the same without him. We at RIC will forever honor his life and his passion. Before I share all of the happy news from 2014, it is with sadness that I acknowledge the January 2015 passing of Dr. Henry B. Betts — RIC’s steadfast and tireless champion, and pioneer in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation (PMR). We were truly privileged to know Dr. Betts and to work alongside him during the formative days In happier news, 2014 was an extraordinary year for RIC. For the 24th consecutive year, RIC was recognized by U.S. News & World Report as the #1 rehabilitation hospital in the nation, making us the only hospital of any kind to achieve this distinction, as well as the undisputed global leader in our field. I am also proud to report that Northwestern University’s PMR Residency Program — operated at RIC — was ranked the #1 program in the country. Even with these honors, we are more determined than ever to innovate, discover and change everything we do in order to improve outcomes for the patients we serve. Each day our new research hospital — the Ability Institute of RIC — rises before our eyes. With every steel beam and pane of glass that goes up, we grow closer to bringing our patients the world’s first-ever translational rehabilitation hospital. The new facility will enable us to embed patient care with research unlike ever before, anywhere, with the purpose of innovating and achieving increasingly better outcomes. Our AbilityLabs™ will represent RIC’s big bet — investing in the insight we will glean from science and technology to advance “ability” and improve the lives of our patients. The support of the Women’s Board has been vital to RIC’s success. In 2014, it was more apparent than ever how important our partnership is. On behalf of everyone at RIC, we are deeply grateful for the continued commitment and selfless hard work of the members of RIC’s Women’s Board and for your worthy help in keeping the mission of RIC going strong. Smith, MD SPRING LUNCHEON Cindy Polayes and Ann Benjamin Tamra Weiss and Susan Garland Marcia Opp and Colette Pollock Lori Nerenberg and Dianne Millard WINTER LUNCHEON Mary Bagley and Marcy Gookin Joan Siff and Sara TenBroek Trish Lear and Astra Gamsjaeger ANNUAL BOARD MEETING THE ABILITY INSTITUTE OF RIC SITE VISIT Connie Coolidge Martha Idler HENRY BETTS MEMORIAL SERVICE Kitty Freidheim and Pat Dempsey PEDIATRIC DISCOVERY MOMENT On Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014, the committee for the Pediatric Rehabilitation Innovation Center hosted an RIC “Discovery Moment” at The Arts Club of Chicago. More than 150 guests gathered for a cocktail reception and presentation, “Hope. Courage. Ability.” Invited guests included RIC donors, volunteers, former patients and staff. Medical Director of Pediatric and Adolescent Rehabilitation Dr. Charles Sisung kicked off the evening with an overview of RIC’s pediatric program, including its link to the history of pediatric rehabilitation in the United States. Dr. Sisung and Assistant Medical Director of Pediatric and Adolescent Rehabilitation Dr. Gadi Revivo then had the great pleasure of introducing four RIC pediatric patients, ranging in age from 7 to 19, each of whom shared his or her unique story and the ways in which RIC and its people sparked hope, courage and advancing Ability in their lives. Claudia Claudia, 19, began her journey at RIC in 2006 after undergoing emergency brain surgery. Claudia’s cerebellum had herniated into her brainstem, leaving her unable to move or breathe on her own. After several years of treatment at RIC to relearn basic motor skills, Claudia has regained enough fine motor control to walk more effectively and balance on her own. Now she is able to execute many of the day-to-day activities of a 19-year-old — like using her cell phone. Zain Born prematurely and diagnosed with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, Zain, 14, uses a wheelchair for mobility. He has undergone four major surgeries, spending several weeks at RIC following each one. Dr. Sisung described Zain as “always goal-driven,” performing well in his studies at Downers North High School and enjoying early success as the school’s sports broadcaster. Zain is confident that Dr. Sisung and RIC will help him reach his other major goals. A physician at the local hospital that treated her recommended RIC to her parents, and the next morning, she was transferred to RIC. Jessica now attends junior college near her home in Streator, Ill. After enthusiastic encouragement from Dr. Sisung, she just received her driver’s license. SKYRISE CHICAGO – “TOWER UP” WOMEN’S BOARD! Bryn The final speaker of the evening was 7-year-old Bryn. Born with spina bifida, Bryn has minimal muscle strength and no feeling from the waist down. Following the latest of the eight surgeries, she was admitted to RIC for three weeks of extensive physical therapy. Discovery Moments for each Innovation Center are coordinated by RIC’s Advancement Department in collaboration with the respective Innovation Center committee. RIC’s new research hospital —The Ability Institute — will include five Innovation Centers: Pediatric; Brain; Spinal Cord; Nerve, Muscle & Bone; and Cancer. Each Discovery Moment invites RIC donors, volunteers, former patients and staff to learn more about the unique work done by the talented professionals here, while also raising awareness and emphasizing the importance of philanthropic support for various initiatives, including the Advance Human Ability Campaign. This campaign supports the Ability Institute, slated to open in the first quarter of 2017. The 6th Annual SkyRise Chicago was held at the iconic Willis Tower on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014. More than 3,000 people from around the world climbed or stationary hand-cycled up all 2,109 steps (103 floors) to the Willis Tower Skydeck, where they were rewarded with a medal and spectacular views of Chicago. The Women’s Board SkyRise team raised more than $13,000, an impressive sum that put them in 3rd place for funds raised! Thank you for joining us in helping RIC reach new heights in patient care and research. For more information, contact the Advancement Department at [email protected], or 312-238-6013. Jessica Jessica, 19, suffered a traumatic brain injury following a car accident at the age of 15. She was given a 30 percent chance of survival and was referred to a nursing home for future care. Claudia, Dr. Sisung, Dr. Revivo, Jessica, Zain and Bryn. THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY The Annual Appeal remains a central pillar of Women’s Board support for RIC. Your generous gifts provide sustenance and growth for many invaluable programs that improve the lives of patients and assist their families and caregivers — Charity Care, Sports and Fitness, Ronald McDonald House, Therapeutic Recreation, Patient Support, the LIFE Center, Vocational Rehabilitation and Assistive Technology. All are thriving thanks to your kindness and gifts. Please accept our heartfelt gratitude for truly making a difference in the lives of our patients. You have helped them advance their Ability. If you have not made an Annual Appeal donation and would like to, please call 312.238.6023. For more information about Women’s Board initiatives, please visit www.ric.org/donate. CHICAGO INTERNATIONAL ART, ANTIQUE & JEWELRY SHOW PREVIEW PARTY For 17 consecutive years, the Women’s Board of RIC has sponsored an antique show Preview Party. The 2014 party was held on Thursday, April 24th at Navy Pier in conjunction with The Chicago International Art, Antique & Jewelry Show presented by the Palm Beach Show Group. The event featured more than 100 prominent exhibitors, and showcased their collections of fine art, antique and estate jewelry, Asian antiquities, sculpture, textiles, furniture and more. Keith Goldstein and Patricia Cox Once again, the party was superb, which came as no surprise because it was chaired by two of the Women’s Board’s most loyal and long-standing members, Kitty Freidheim and Leslie Kennedy. The evening welcomed more than 600 guests and surpassed all expectations, raising $230,000 for programs supported by the Women’s Board at RIC. A special thank you to all! Lisa Malkin and Lori Komisar Connie Coolidge and Dr. Joanne C. Smith Co-Chairs Kitty Freidheim and Leslie Kennedy MEMBER OF THE YEAR KRISTI BROWN The Women’s Board honors Kristi Brown as the “2014 Member of the Year.” Kristi has been an active member of the RIC Women’s Board for 21 years. In 2014, Kristi was one of three co-chairs that took the Women’s Board Annual Gala in an entirely new direction, raising more than $1 million. Beyond the fall gala, Kristi’s support and influence made a significant difference in what the board was able to accomplish in 2014. Kristi leads by example with her energy, positive attitude and commitment. We are so grateful for her many years of membership and stellar work! Congratulations and many thanks, Kristi! CROWN, 1921–2015 On Sunday, Jan. 25, 2015, we lost one of RIC’s most devoted champions, Joanne S. Crown. For nearly 45 years, Joanne was tireless in her love for RIC and her mission to help RIC succeed. Joanne joined the RIC Women’s Board in 1970, serving as its president from 1982 to 1984, and was honored as “Women’s Board Member of the Year” in 1998. Under Joanne’s leadership, the Women’s Board Fellow program was established. Joanne also served as a member of the RIC Board of Directors beginning in 1987. Joanne S. Crown will remain forever in our hearts and minds, in both the legacy and the future of RIC. IN MEMORIAM HENRY B. BETTS, MD 1928–2015 Henry Brognard Betts, MD, internationally revered champion for people with disabilities and a leader in transforming physical medicine and rehabilitation from a minor discipline into an essential healthcare specialty, passed away on Jan. 4, 2015, in Chicago, Ill. He was 86. Dr. Betts’ career at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) spanned more than three decades. In 1991 he guided the hospital to its first #1 spot in the field, as ranked by U.S. News & World Report. RIC has maintained this top leadership position for the last 24 years. In alignment with his pioneering medical career, Dr. Betts devoted himself to improving quality of life for people with disabilities, building public acceptance and advocating for their rights as U.S. citizens. Dr. Betts joined the RIC staff as an attending physician in 1963, a decade after its founding by Paul B. Magnuson, MD, former chief medical director of the Veterans Administration. Two years later, Dr. Betts was named medical director of RIC, a position he would hold for 29 years. He also served as RIC president and chief executive officer from 1986 to 1997. In 1967 Dr. Betts was appointed chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) at what is now Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, and played a leading role in establishing the residency program in PMR at RIC. The same year, RIC launched its first research projects, and Dr. Betts and Dr. Ali S. Khalili, RIC’s first scientist, co-authored and published the results. Today, RIC runs Northwestern’s medical school and PMR residency program, the top program of its kind in the country. RIC-trained physicians practice and are leaders at institutions across the country and around the world. Moreover, RIC’s Searle Rehabilitation Research Institute is now the largest, most prestigious research program of its kind in the world, with more than $100 million in multi-year federal research grants. Dr. Betts’ groundbreaking accomplishments as a physician and healthcare leader also drove his highly visible role as an advocate for the disabled. In 1976 with the backing of Dr. Betts and Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley, RIC launched an intensive Injury Prevention Program aimed at reducing the nation’s incidence of preventable injuries. In 1979 Dr. Betts was pivotal in founding Access Living of Metropolitan Chicago, an organization which continues today as an independent non-profit still at the vanguard of the disability rights movement. With the goal of enabling easier mobility for people in wheelchairs, Dr. Betts prevailed with Mayor Richard J. Daley to introduce curb cuts to the city, an idea realized in Chicago well before curb cuts were mandated by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Born on May 25, 1928, in New Rochelle, N.Y., Dr. Betts was raised in New Jersey and Florida. He received his bachelor’s degree from Princeton University in 1950 and his MD degree from the University of Virginia in 1954. After his medical internship and service in the U.S. Marine Corps, he entered a residency under the mentorship of Howard Rusk, MD, at New York University’s Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine. “Henry Betts saw the big picture,” said Joanne C. Smith, MD, RIC president and CEO. “He understood the potential of physical medicine and rehabilitation to make people with disabilities better, stronger, more capable of pursuing productive and fulfilling lives. And he believed with all his heart that people with disabilities should be allowed to live their lives in our society, as fellow citizens, to the greatest extent of their ability. We will carry with us into the future his innovative leadership and social advocacy.” Should you wish to honor the legacy of Dr. Betts with a gift, contributions may be made to the Henry B. Betts Memorial Fund at RIC. All gifts will be used to support the Henry B. Betts LIFE Center in the new Ability Institute of RIC. The Betts LIFE Center will be prominent in the Sky Lobby and integral to the Institute’s continuing service to patients and families, both in Chicago and around the world. LUCY’S STORY The 2014 Women’s Board Annual Appeal was blessed with the opportunity to feature a spirited little girl named Lucy. Lucy’s story and determination has touched many at RIC, and her journey is inspiring. Lucy was born 11 weeks premature at 2 pounds, 14 ounces. She was taken immediately to a neonatal ICU for a seven-week stay and given a life-altering diagnosis of cerebral palsy. During those seven weeks, Lucy’s parents saw clearly that their fragile-seeming daughter was a fighter and determined to live her life on her terms, despite the obstacles they knew she would face. Lucy made her first trip to RIC before her first birthday, where she and her family met Dr. Gaebler-Spira. Lucy’s mom vividly remembers the day she met Dr. Gaebler. “Despite our anxiety and many questions, Dr. Gaebler was so calming and engaged that it felt like Lucy was her only patient,” she recalled. 345 East Superior Street Women’s Board Office Chicago, IL 60611 312-238-6023 tel www.RIC.org During this anxious and uncertain time for Lucy and her family, all found comfort in knowing that Dr. Gaebler is a top expert in her field. Lucy has continued to make great strides on her road to greater Ability. Using the therapy techniques and the hard work she puts in at RIC, she can enjoy her life as an 8-year-old!
