A Message From the President
Dear Mullen Community,
I am proud to welcome you to Mullen Mardi Gras 2012! This year we are excited
to celebrate 80 years of Lasallian education in Denver. Mullen has changed over
the years but one thing has remained the same; our school has transformed lives
since its inception. The brick and mortar will always need maintenance and in
some cases replacement, but the spirit of St. John Baptist de La Salle and the
leadership of the Catholic Church are constants. Within that context our mission
has touched the hearts of so many people in our community. It is my sincere hope that each of you
understands that your contribution, however made, has helped touch hearts and minds and transforms
lives.
So, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Mullen Mardi Gras 2012!
Ryan Clement

80 Years of Performance
With Character
Mullen High School is named for John Kernan
Mullen, a highly respected philanthropist who was
responsible for establishing the school. A native of
Ballinasloe, County Galway, Ireland, he came to
America with his parents when he was nine years old.
At the age of 14 he entered the business world, going
to work in a flour mill in New York. He stayed in the
flour industry throughout his life and became very
wealthy. He was the founder of the Colorado Milling
and Elevator Company, which developed the famous
Hungarian brand of flour.
In 1928, Mullen, working with Bishop Henry Tihen,
opened negotiations with the Christian Brothers of the
New Orleans-Santa Fe province with the intent of
establishing an orphanage for teenage boys.
Unfortunately, Mullen died in 1929 before he could
complete the project. His daughters and their husbands assumed his plans however, and purchased a
large farm called the Shirley Dairy Farm located southwest of Denver. Originally called J.K. Mullen Home for
Boys, the orphanage opened with eighteen boys and
three Christian Brothers in 1931.
The history of Mullen High School can be divided
into four phases. In the first phase, 1931-1950, the
school was conducted for orphans only, and the enrollment never exceeded 50. The orphans worked on the
farm and attended school. The orphans came mostly
from St. Vincent’s and St. Clara’s Orphanages in
Denver and Sacred Heart Orphanage in Pueblo.
The second phase 1950-1966, began with the
addition of paying boarders and day students. In 1953,
the school name was changed from J.K. Mullen Home
for Boys to J.K. Mullen High School. Gradually the
orphans and boarders were phased out of the school,
the last of them graduating in 1966.
In the third phase, 1966-1989, Mullen High School
was a day school for boys only. Brother Adrian Pfarr
was principal from 1962-68. During Brother Adrian’s
time, the 300 hall and the administration building were
added. The old cafeteria was remodeled to become
the present day Activities Center and textbook storage
site. The very popular Brother Bernard Kinneavy
arrived at Mullen in 1964 and was Chair of the English
Department. He re-emphasized the basics and reenergized the department. Appointed to principal, he
served from 1968 –1976. During Brother Bernard’s
tenure as principal he was responsible for substantial
growth and achievement; most notably: modular
scheduling, accreditation from the North Central
Association of Secondary Schools, restoration of the
lake, introduction of the auction to the Mardi Gras
Gala, support of well-equipped science labs, and
sending the basketball team to State and speech
teams to Nationals. In 1978 Brother Bernard became
the Development Director and served in that capacity
until 1998 when he became President of Mullen High
School until his death in 2002. Brother John Burke was
Principal from 1976-77. Brother Michael Starkey was
principal from 1977-83. Brother Wayne Viguerie served
as principal from 1983-85, when his health required his
retirement. Brother Marvin Richter was principal until
health issues also required resignation in 1986. Brother
William Giddings assumed responsibilities as principal
until 1992.
The fourth phase of the school’s history began with
the enrollment of girls in 1989. Vince Greco, Jr. began
his career as a teacher and coach at Mullen in 1966.
He taught at Mullen until 1973, then transferred to the
Jefferson County School system and returned as principal of Mullen 1993-2001. Mullen is now in its 16th
year as a coeducational day school. The Mullen 2000
Building Campaign expansion saw the completion of
the Christian Brothers Fine Arts Hall, and Hutchison
Field House gymnasium in 1995. The Rilko Events
Center and Chapel was dedicated in January of 1998.
Mullen Legacy Capital Campaign continues this strong
tradition with the Sferra Library and Resource Center
completed in 2002, and the newest building opened in
2004, the Spirit Center, housing classrooms and a
10,000 square foot multipurpose space.
With the decline in the number of vocations to the
Christian Brothers, as well as to the other religious
orders and the priesthood, Mullen’s administration and
the faculty have changed. In the early years of the
school, until the late seventies, the entire administration and most of the faculty were Christian Brothers. It
has been the Christian Brothers’ goal to pass onto
their lay partners the Lasallian tradition that has distinguished the Christian Brothers’ schools since St. John
Baptist de La Salle established the Order in 1680. This
mission is directed toward providing a human and
Christian education to the young, with attention to
those most in need, that all may achieve personal fulfillment and redemption. To accomplish this mission,
the school aims to promote peace, justice, and love by
emphasizing individual attention and constant care and
vigilance toward all students.

4. Final bids are binding. All sales are final. There will be no exchanges or refunds on
auction items except where specified.
5. In case of a dispute, Lauri Echer shall act as final authority and shall determine the
winning bid. Her decision will be final.
6. The purchaser must remove all auction items from the Hyatt Regency Denver Hotel
on February 11, 2012. If special arrangements need to be made, the buyer must

7. Unless otherwise stipulated, all gift certificates must be used by February 11, 2013.
8. Condominiums and Hotels – the use of all condominiums, mountain homes, hotels,
and motels is subject to specific reservations. Please make sure before you bid that
the condominium you wish to purchase is available for the time you want to use it.
All sales of condominiums, mountain homes, hotels, and motels are final. Please be
considerate during your stay as many of the mountain homes belong to people in our
Mullen community.
9. By bidding on an item, the bidder consents to all auction rules and waives any right to
claim damages of whatever description against Mullen High School, the Mardi Gras
Committee, anyone assisting with the auction, or the item donor.

complexity of the event and the hundreds of individuals involved, errors may occur and
names omitted or misspelled. If we made a mistake, please forgive us and inform us of
our error.

Silent Auction Rules
1. The silent Auction will begin at 5:30 p.m. All items in the silent auction have assigned
numbers. An electronic tablet for bidding will be located nearby. To bid, swipe your
card, enter the item number and the amount of your bid. You may enter a maximum
bid and check on your bids from any tablet.
2. Each bid must be at least the minimum raise per item as indicated on the electronic
tablet. All bids must be made in whole dollar amounts.
3. Volunteers are trained to help you with any questions that you may have. The
Volunteers will be circulating through the Imperial and Grand Ballroom while the
auction is open.
4. The highest correct bid constitutes the winning bid.
5. The Silent Auction will close at 8:30 p.m.
Live Auction Rules
1. Bidding for items in the LIVE Auction will begin following the presentations.
2. Bids shall be placed on an item by raising your auction number, which will be given to
you that night.
3. Acceptance of the high bid becomes a binding obligation.
4. If an item sells for more than fair market value, the difference is tax deductible.
Cartels are a logical way to join with friends to share large ticket items such as parties,
dinners, and vacations. You split the costs, double the fun, and Mullen High School
benefits!
Information on Tax Deductibility
The IRS permits a charitable tax deduction for the amount paid in excess of the fair
market value. Donors should always rely on their own tax advisors. Mullen High School
and private donors of the auctioned items make no representations of any kind, either
expressed or implied, regarding any property sold at the auction. All auctioned items
(either silent or LIVE) are sold on an “as is” basis. Neither Mullen High School nor the
private donors assume any liability or any personal property damage suffered because of
any usage of the purchase. No individual or entity is authorized on behalf of Mullen High
School to make any warranty or representation regarding the use of any donated items.
