We are working hard to conserve and restore wild Atlantic salmon runs to abundance. Here are some of the highlights. IMPROVED RUNS! The 2010 Atlantic salmon runs to many rivers throughout eastern Canada broke recent records. Some rivers, especially in Newfoundland, experienced their best returns in decades. Grilse returns increased substantially, and large salmon numbers, despite dismal predictions, actually increased in many rivers. SUSPENSION OF THE GREENLAND COMMERCIAL FISHERY SINCE 2002. The agreement between ASF, the North Atlantic Salmon Fund (Iceland) and Greenland fishermen to suspend the commercial fishery of wild Atlantic salmon on their ocean feeding grounds is certainly a significant factor in the good runs of large salmon that are defying scientific predictions. It will continue until 2013, as long as we can raise the funds to compensate the fishermen and get them involved in alternative employment. DEALING WITH CANADA’S OWN MIXEDSTOCK SALMON INTERCEPTORY FISHERY. ASF is urging Canada to follow international standards to which our government has agreed in managing the mixed-stock salmon fishery off Labrador’s coast. Labrador rivers were among the few in Canada that had poor salmon runs in 2010. We are urging government to apply precautionary management by lowering food fishery allocations and expanding assessment to ensure that only salmon originating from healthy river runs are harvested and introducing selective gear to conserve large spawners. CONDUCTING GROUND BREAKING RESEARCH. Since 1994, ASF has been a leader in developing the technology and then actually tracking wild Atlantic salmon on several rivers. We use sonic telemetry to determine their migration patterns and 6 survival from freshwater to the head of tide, through the estuary and across the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the Strait of Belle Isle. Last year, we worked with Dalhousie University’s Ocean Tracking Network (OTN) to track salmon to the Cabot Strait and will continue tracking research in cooperation with this program. ASF was instrumental in developing the OTN under the leadership of Dr. Fred Whoriskey who led our research programs for 15 years before becoming Executive Director of the OTN. PROTECTING WILD SALMON FROM INTERACTIONS WITH FARMED SALMON. We are urging governments to convert salmon aquaculture from open sea cages to closed containment to prevent the spread of contaminants, disease, and parasites and to prevent escapes that lead to genetic interactions that weaken the wild gene pool. We are keeping the public informed when farmed salmon do escape, and are applying pressure on governments when these incidents occur. In three incidents during the fall, the industry reported that a total of 184,000 farmed salmon had escaped in the Bay of Fundy. At NASCO, ASF works with other non government organizations to advocate for stricter measures and better adherence to aquaculture agreements. ARMING OURSELVES WITH WELLRESEARCHED DATA. To elevate the wild Atlantic salmon’s stature with governments and the general public, ASF has commissioned an independent analysis that will provide us with the socio-economic value of wild Atlantic salmon in Canada. This new information will help us convince the federal government to invest more in conservation and restoration of wild Atlantic salmon. Thank you to our dedicated dinner committee for organizing this great dinner. Thanks to our guests for attending and bidding. The proceeds from our dinner and auction support essential programs and activities that help us save the species. Yours in conservation, Bill Taylor 7 LIVE AUCTION LA1 Bogdan Reel This is a size 0 Right Hand Reel. Each November in Havana, the House of Partagas holds its annual buyers week where all the Partagas vendors from around the world come to the city for a 5 day gala to celebrate the new offerings that this venerable cigar house will be releasing for the coming year. This invitation only event is an extraordinary window into the world of fine Cuban cigars set amongst the stunning back drop of Havana and its upper echelon of society. The Partagas Buyers Festival is a series of organized cocktail parties, dinners, and outdoor activities which take place in and around Havana, over a 5 day period. The core of this experience is the enjoyment and appreciation of Cuba’s finest cigars while being immersed in the country’s dynamic culture. Music, food and good wine are major elements of this trip and guests will have plenty of time to explore this vibrant city during the day. 8 The week is bookended by the sublime opening and closing ceremonies, which each consist of a cocktail party, dinner, music and lively floor shows. Special cigars are rolled specifically for the festival and each activity within the week has its own cigar tasting. Our base for the trip is one of Havana's top 5 Star hotels, which is conveniently located just a short walk to Old Havana as well as several of Hemmingway's favorite watering holes and many of the cities best museums and historic sites. They love Havana and know it intimately. Their on site team in Havana, oversees all aspects of this trip, from airport pick up upon arrival to the mid week private dinner at our unique rooftop villa in downtown Havana. He has traveled extensively, painting studies and taking photographs for later works. Inspired also by the Masters of old, they include Anders Zorn, Bruno Liljefors, Frank Tenney Johnson, Carl Rungius, Thomas Moran, Philip R. Goodwin, the list also includes his father, Michael Coleman. Coleman uses a traditional academic approach in his painting, using gouache and oil. However, he doesn’t like to label his style as “realism,” as there is a certain amount of spontaneity and a slight impressionistic feel to his paintings. Coleman endeavors to create a connection between his paintings and the observer by invoking a mood that the viewer can walk into.
