Nelson Dear Friends: We are so happy to share that 2012 was a very successful year for the Zoo. We knew the opening of the innovative, educational and fun Hasbro’s Our Big Backyard would be well received by our members and visitors, but you clearly exceeded our hopes and expectations! At 634,000, we experienced our best attendance level in more than eight years and more than 3,000 new memberships were taken out, many by families who commented that the Backyard alone was worth the price of membership!! This year we will open the next phase of Hasbro’s Our Big Backyard. The Beyond the Fence area will be enhanced with features like cave and climbing structures and learning circles. The result will be a naturescape that is sure to inspire older children to “explore, play and wonder” in the open area below the CVS/Caremark All Kids Can Treehouse. And, speaking of the treehouse, additional interactive features will be added there, as well. Thanks again to all of the donors who made this exhibit possible and most especially: The Champlin Foundations, Hasbro, CVS/ Caremark, Fidelity Foundation, The Providence Journal Foundation, Zoo/Society Board members and many individual donors and supporters, including you. Ex-Officio Robert McMahon Superintendent of Parks * In Memoriam Printed on recycled paper Last year, we were delighted to see the reaction of visitors to our newest animal additions. Takin, king vultures and red river hogs were all added to our collection and each of these exhibits at YOUR Zoo is the only one in New England!! You’ll read elsewhere in this issue about other Zoo news. But, as I prepare to depart the Zoo after 20 years, I am astonished to recall that when the recession hit in 2008 it would have been very hard to predict that more than $8 million in zoo improvements would still have been completed by 2013. But, with the opening of the John J. Palumbo Veterinary Hospital, Hasbro’s Our Big Backyard and four years of annual zoo improvements like the new animal exhibits, that’s just what was accomplished, all with your support and encouragement. Many, many thanks to you all! Roger Williams Park Zoo has always prided itself on working hard to be better. Looking forward, a new director will soon take over to lead the Zoo through the exciting process of identifying and prioritizing what improvement projects and new exhibits will be best for the next five to seven year period. Stay tuned, it will continue to be a wild and enjoyable ride, we promise!! As always, thank you for your continued support and friendship!! When you read that title, did you think “eek!”? Well, as the timber rattlesnake’s Latin name, Crotalus horridus, suggests, you probably are not alone. But this new exhibit will help you understand why that fear response is mostly unwarranted. This species was originally found in 31 states but now survives in only 27. It has an important role to play in deciduous forest habitats but it has been extirpated from Maine, Rhode Island, central New Hampshire and most of Vermont leading to its identification as a “species of Severe Concern” by the Northeast partners for Amphibian and Reptile Conservation. As a small predator, the timber rattlesnake helps to manage rodent populations while also providing a food source for animals like hawks, bobcats, coyotes, foxes, as well as racer and king snakes that prey on the young timbers. Humans are the major threat to the adult timber rattlesnake through habitat loss, indiscriminant killing, collecting, and road mortality. The fact that these snakes are slow breeders means that it is especially hard for the species to hold its own. Further, many of the D ONOR PROFILE - SARAH DENBY C A R I N G F O R A N I M A L S B E YO N D H E R L I F E T I M E It’s hard for Sarah Denby to pick a favorite animal at the Zoo. When asked, she raves about the giant anteater with its amazing tail, the red river hog with tufts of hair in unexpected places, and the elephants with their adept and sensitive trunks and human-like qualities. She clearly is an avid animal lover. Sarah first got involved as a donor and a volunteer to the Zoo’s Capital Campaign in 2006 because she believes strongly in the Zoo as an important cultural and scientific resource for the community. “The fact that the Zoo’s mission extends beyond entertaining the public means a lot to me,” she said.” Its commitment to environmental education and conservation is so important.” Along with her husband Charley, Sarah combines her love of animals with world travel, and soon after she went on safari in Africa last year Sarah was inspired to include the Zoo in her will. With her most recent gift, Sarah has become a founding member of the Zookeepers’ Circle, created this year to honor donors who are helping to secure the future of the Zoo by supporting our endowment. Her cash bequest to the Zoo’s endowment creates a legacy that will support her passion for animals beyond her lifetime. We are grateful to Sarah for her thoughtful and meaningful support of the Zoo. To learn more about the Zookeepers’ Circle, how to include the Zoo in your will or about other charitable giving options, please contact Elizabeth Grover at (401) 941-3910 x339 or [email protected]. The timber rattlesnake project represents one of the important RWP Zoo conservation efforts your membership helps to support. snakes in our region now suffer from a fungal disease that can leave them blinded. RWP Zoo conservation and veterinary staff members are working with regional partners to develop a solid conservation action plan for the species; partnering in a region-wide health survey; and taking in and holding snakes from area populations for health sampling, treatment and captive reproduction with the possibility of bolstering the genetic strength of the native populations in the future. moreZOONEWS Thanks to your support, a number of exhibit enhancements will be completed for this year. You’ll notice the significantly improved terrain in the zebra and wildebeest yard. The new drainage system made it possible for these animals to have greater access to their outdoor yard during the winter. On your way to the upper Zoo, you will notice the pool that was the location of our penguin exhibit; they needed new homes with better indoor holding facilities. We will miss them and we know many of you will as well, but it was the best decision for them. You’ll find black necked swans swimming elegantly in the pool this summer. This species comes from southern regions of South America. Lucille Massemino Daniel & Carol Mathis Frederick R. Mattis Mr. & Mrs. Neil McCulloch Mr. and Mrs. Norman E. G IFTS AND GRANTS With the continual development of new exhibits, animal care improvements and the ongoing delivery of education, research and conservation programming, Roger Williams Park Zoo relies on the generosity of individuals, foundations and trusts. The Rhode Island Zoological Society enjoys working one-on-one with such donors to match their interests with the needs of the Zoo. In the Australasia building, you’ll see that our two hornbills have a fabulous new indoor viewing area. We expect the tree kangaroos will be back on view in a new and improved exhibit sometime in 2014. When you visit the back yard of Australasia, notice the nice new landscaping in the wallaby yard. This summer we’ll welcome a new species of wallaby, the Bennett’s wallaby. Also known as the rednecked wallaby, these animals can weigh up to 40 pounds! Bank of America The Howard Bayne Fund Abbie A. TEEN PROGRAMS at the ZOO Most people think of the Zoo as a fun place for children, but did you know that it’s also a great place for teens? The Zoo has a wide variety of programs that engage teenagers and get them excited about caring for wildlife. Nearly 100 Zoo Crew volunteers dedicate their time to educating Zoo guests about environmental conservation, animal behavior and zookeeping. Whether you’re on grounds or enjoying a summer camp experience, you can find these phenomenal teens helping to further the Zoo’s mission while exploring their own interests. Teens involved in Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots Club work to raise awareness about local environmental issues. In December, the Roots and Shoots members put together an Eco-Sale, making products from recyclable and non-recyclable materials (such as fruit pouch lunch bags). In March, they facilitated “Ready, Set, Recycle!”, an e-waste and household hazardous waste collection in collaboration with the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation and the Office of Sustainability at the City of Providence. Pets and Vets is an afterschool program for Providence-area teens who want to learn more about responsible pet ownership and animal-related careers. Through field trips and guest speakers, teens gain a wider perspective on their role in raising and caring for animals. We are offering a new summer camp for kids age 11 – 13. Called Conservation Heroes, these one-week sessions will empower campers to become leaders in conservation through teambuilding and leadership activities, learning about other leaders in conservation, engagement in inquiry activities, games, program animal encounters, visits to animal exhibits and more. There are three sessions offered this summer. Visit the Education section atrwpzoo.org for more information about all these exciting programs. “A W I LD A F FA I R” S PO N S O R S Thank you to the generous sponsors of “A Wild Affair,” an event held in October 2012 that raised nearly $19,000 to support the Zoo’s education and conservation initiatives: October Harvest Sponsors Liz Rollins Mauran & Frank Mauran Alison & Donald McNaughton Devin McShane Charles & Alison Townsend Scott D.
