Through a grant, New Horizons for NH and Veterans Inc. have partnered to develop the Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Program in New Hampshire. The goal is twofold: First the program is to provide services to assist in re-integrating homeless veterans into meaningful employment within the labor force; secondly, to stimulate the development of an effective service delivery system that will address the complex problems facing homeless veterans. Jay has made contact with over 30 veterans in the short time we have been operational, and is proud to announce that the program is able to meet the growing needs of all generations of veterans and their families. Keep up the good work, Jay! I ask myself, do I write about the dedicated staff we have at New Horizons or the hundreds of volunteers who give so much to those in need or do I highlight some of the donors who’s financial support helps us to keep our doors open and provide food and shelter to those in need. In the end, I tell myself that words cannot express the appreciation that I have for all of the above. During these challenging times, it takes the combined efforts of staff, volunteers and donors to provide for those in our community. During the past few months we have established new records in the numbers of people who are coming to us for help. Three times during the month of January we had over 100 people stay in our Shelters. On two occasions we served over 300 meals in our dining room and we are providing groceries in our Pantry to more than 900 families and individuals. Another important part of New Horizons is Angie’s Shelter for Women which is a women’s only facility that provides a wide array of services to women to help them to become self-sufficient. Doreen Brown, Angie’s Shelter Manager, works daily to help make a difference in the lives of these women. Angie’s Shelter, named in honor of Sister Angeline Whidden, is entering its 10th year! Watch New Horizons with Charlie Sherman on Channel 16 Sundays @ 9:00pm Mondays @ 5:00am and 1:00pm Wednesdays @ 6:00pm Thursdays @ 2:00am and 10:00am In this newsletter you will see a number of upcoming events that provide much needed financial support to New Horizons. Please take a few minutes to read about them and I hope that you are able to join us for a few of them. When you do, please make sure you come over to say hi so I can personally say Thank You for your support of New Horizons for NH. - Charlie Sherman, Executive Director Build your legacy with us “Providing a better future for the generation after you.” For nearly forty years, New Horizons has served the hungry and homeless in our community and is a leading advocate to provide food and shelter for this population. A donation to New Horizons through a planned giving option provides you with peace of mind that your legacy will be fulfilled as our dedication and commitment will continue. We are ready to work with you to develop a gift plan that works best for you and your philanthropic plans. There are many ways to give that benefit you and can help you to address a variety of personal financial goals. When you are ready, please contact me. - Nancy Comai, Development Director OTHER WAYS TO GIVE Since Thanksgiving dinner was sponsored by Bellwether Community Credit Union, many businesses have stepped up for New Horizons by way of sponsoring meals. Holidays are the toughest for those people in need coming to New Horizons, and these contributions of $2,500 have enhanced the meal to make it special for these clients. We are making these holiday meals available for sponsorship on a first come, first served basis. A special thank you to the Singer Family for sponsoring the Thanksgiving meal, and to the Anagnost and Shubert families for sponsoring the Christmas meal. Sponsor a bed for a neighbor in need: 20 more beds were purchased and installed. Your $400.00 contribution to sponsor a bed goes a long way to restore dignity and instill confidence in shelter clients. Simply go online at www.newhorizonsfornh.org to donate. UPCOMING EVENTS TO BENEFIT NEW HORIZONS THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!! Dear Staff & Volunteers of the New Horizons Food Pantry I’m disabled and on a low fixed income (SSI). I’ve learned to budget carefully to manage most times, but with the rising costs of, well, everything! And no cost of living increase in SSI for several years, plus some unexpected dental bills, I found myself struggling to buy food. Healthy food, I mean. For some time I’d been getting cheap carbs (pasta, rice, noodles, and less fresh foods & whole grains) I switched to cheaper but higher fat meats as well. And my health suffered for it – I learned that my liver has been damaged by this diet and my blood pressure had gone up again. I was told I had to eat better. So, I came to your food pantry and I was just amazed at all the fresh fruits and vegetables. And meats! And low sodium canned foods. And did I mention the vegetables! I love vegetables and fruits. I ate like a queen for several weeks – It was so much food! I made soups with the vegetables, apple sauce, I’ve come back twice since then but hopefully now I can make it thru one winter without help. But I had to let you know how incredibly grateful I am for all of the food. Wonderful food – such a great variety too! That you provided and thank you all for being so kind and compassionate. You made a huge difference in my life and I am so very grateful! HomeShow March 2 – March 4 And still in awe over the amount and variety of fresh produce you had for us. I made a pan of roasted veggies with garlic, huge pan of them. Squash, eggplant, onions, peppers, potatoes, sweet potatoes, zucchini, and broccoli. It was so good!! THANK YOU And Bless you for all that you do. - Althea Sincerely, iRON CHEF AT NEW HORIZONS No, not the real Iron Chef, but our own version of the show. Every day, the cooking team (Sammy and Sean), work wonders with whatever main food item is available to them. On the Iron Chef show, one main item is provided and the chefs go to work to prepare extravagant entrees. New Horizons Soup Kitchen is no different. February Fork Lift Challenge The first annual February Forklift drive to raise donations and recruit volunteers kicked off February 1. Charlie Sherman: “There is a daily need, affecting real people; they are neighbors who require our help. By challenging local businesses, we hope to maintain throughout the winter months the momentum we see during the holidays.” Fortunately, New Horizons for New Hampshire provides a primary source of food, shelter, and basic medical care for many of Manchester’s homeless. To raise awareness that this isn’t just a once-a-year need, New Horizons is challenging area businesses, large and small, to continue the holiday spirit of giving by involving employees and customers alike in an effort to make this February less challenging for those living on the street as well as those providing services. This is the time of year when the hungry and homeless face their greatest need. Local businesses are encouraged to be creative in the ways they collect donations and engage volunteers. The business that exhibits the most creativity will be awarded the Golden Forklift Award by New Horizons’ board of directors.
