LISTEN LEMONADE American superstar Beyonce’s sixth studio album is also her second “visual album”, following her 2013 record, and a concept album. Lemonade was accompanied upon its release by a one-hour film aired on HBO. The album encompasses a variety of genres including pop, R&B, blues, rock, hip hop, soul, funk, country, gospel, and rap. It features guest vocals from James Blake, Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd and Jack White. The album features 12 new songs. It is a conceptual project based on every woman’s journey of self-knowledge and healing. It has been called a black album, after many rumours about husband JZ’s alleged infidelity. Said one critic: “Lemonade wants you to know the line has been crossed and you’ve been offered a rare glimpse to the other side. From the words of Somali-British poet Warsan Shire, to Serena Williams twerking, Lemonade is a collection of experiences and signifiers centred around black womanhood. Specifically, Lemonade looks at a version of black femininity that is rooted in Southern traditions and customs.” 4 Get It Hartbeespoort Brits July 16 rEAD PrIVATE 12: THE GAMES As the title suggests, this book is another chapter in the life of Jack Morgan by renowned author James Patterson, who has sold over 350 million books worldwide and currently holds the Guinness World Record for the most #1 New York Times best sellers. When the police can’t help you and the press will destroy you, when you need maximum force and maximum discretion, there’s only one place to go - Private, the detective agency of Jack Morgan that will get the job done, even if they have to break a few rules to do it. Two years ago, Jack was in Rio consulting on security for the World Cup. The tournament went without a hitch. Until a man died in one of the executive hospitality suites during the final, and the autopsy showed the cause to be a rare and deadly virus. The story was kept from the media to avoid causing panic, but Jack feared that the death was no freak occurrence. Now the eyes of the world are once again turned towards Rio for the Olympic Games, and Jack is back in Brazil’s beautiful capital. But before the torch is lit, the threats come fast and furious when Jack discovers that someone will stop at nothing to sabotage the games. As the opening ceremonies near, Jack must sprint to the finish line to defuse a lethal plot set in motion during the World Cup that could decimate Rio, and turn the Olympics from a worldwide celebration into a deadly spectacle. Do not boil the Glühwein as this will result in the alcohol evaporating. • Serve hot in mugs or glasses that have been preheated in warm water (cold glasses will break) with lemon slices or cinnamon sticks for decoration. If there is leftover Glühwein after 1 hour of making it, remove the orange and lemon slices so they do not impart a bitter taste. Store any leftover Glühwein in a glass container at room temperature and consume within two days. But after decades on stage and many albums to her name, Arina de Witt of Hartbeespoort doesn’t have to sing in anyone’s shadow anymore. Her warm, velvety voice spans three octaves and its rich timbre makes it the ideal musical companion for winter. I ntensely private, it is a rare privilege to interview Arina in her beautiful waterfront home. “As a Karoo girl small-town living suits me. I love the anonymity and the mystery, being able to fly under the radar. I take Chloe for a walk in a ponytail and no makeup,” she says while the adorable beagle insists on being part of the interview. Ever since Arina made her first stage appearance at the age of five, she knew that is where she belonged. She studied drama at Stellenbosch University. Why not music? “The drama crowd just looked like such an interesting bunch, and singing is a performing art too.” She continued classic vocal training under Prof George van der Spuy. After completing her studies she lived in Windhoek in Namibia (then South West Africa) for several years, where she started doing cabaret shows, sang opera, won a national music competition and launched her career in light music. It was also there that she met legendary radio and television personality Jan Spies. Arina made her South African television debut on the popular programme Spies en Plessie with a song by herself and Jan, Rietjiesfluit. Her first CD was released in 1992, and No Regrets, featuring several evergreen romantic hits in French and English, in 1994. Since then she has released a new album almost every two years, with Timeless in 2014 her latest. “It suits me that I have never been part of the mainstream music scene. I am not a songwriter and there are so many beautiful, timeless classics that resonate with my soul. Most of the songs I perform are between 50 and 100 years old.” She sings in seven languages. “There are so many beautiful, timeless classics that resonate with my soul” Arina performs all over South Africa, at corporate functions, ladies’ lunches and charity events. She often combines her shows with motivational speaking. “My voice is such a blessing and gift that has given me so much in my life. I am very grateful and conscious of the responsibility that comes with it.” But everything isn’t always on a high note. “I have fallen off and through the stage – more than once - had my bracelet caught on the back of my dress for an entire song, forgotten my words, lost my voice just before an important show for VIPs, had my heel stuck in the floorboards – you name it,” she laughs. “I have learned that it is best to be honest with your audience. Make a joke – even at your own expense. The show always has to go on!” In a difficult economic climate artists often have to create their own opportunities. Arina is excited about As Drome Vlerke Kry, a musical play specially written for her and her good friend, Hennie Smit, with which they will be touring the country for the next three years. It is the story of two worldfamous performers in an old age home who reflect back on their lives in the limelight over many decades and love lost. Arina sings Edith Piaf, Maria Callas, and Nana Mouskouri, among others, which showcases the wide range of her voice, her versatility in different genres and timeless repertoire. She has also joined forces with André Schwartz for a programme of popular songs from musicals, One Enchanted Evening. Arina has been married to her varsity sweetheart for many years. The couple have a son and daughter who are both married. They enjoy entertaining their close circle at home and spending time on the dam. Is there anything she is not good at? “Cooking! I really have no talent, but I do love food and eating!” Follow Arina’s career via her Facebook page or her soon to be relaunched website, www.arina.co.za WIN!! Dit was goed vir my selfvertroue.” Daar is heeltyd ‘n kamera in jou gesig. She is a kinesiologist, a professional translator who speaks four languages, architectural draughtsman, businesswoman, but most importantly a potter who loves the artistic side of herself. A t the foothills of the beautiful Magliesberg, surrounded by bush, it is easy to see where Trixi Junge gets her inspiration from for the earthy African wildlife-inspired pottery she creates. Her works of art are especially in demand in America and the Far East and even princes wash their hands in her unique basins. Chatting in her natural garden surrounded by dogs and an astounding variety of wild birds, down-to-earth Trixi talks about her much-loved hobby that became a successful and demanding business. “My journey to this point has been a very varied and interesting one. Ceramics has always been a hobby of mine, but I only turned it into a life choice 15 years ago. As my parents thought art was an unacceptable career choice, I ended up studying architectural draughting, followed by a degree in translation. Throughout my ‘career life’, I found myself always drawn back to pottery and ceramics,” she says. “I opened a part-time teaching studio many years ago while still working as a translator and got caught up in the continuous status struggle between art and craft, between creating something unique, and being able to make a living off it.” And then a lucky break made the choice for her. Her husband Fritz heard about a Saudi prince who was looking for wash basins that feature African wildlife. “Fritz almost forced me to make maquettes. I was never into painting so I did it with a scratching technique. To my surprise the prince loved it and ordered 20. Suddenly my basins were being used by royalty,” she laughs. Trixi decided to quit her job and do what she loved best. “Someone suggested I take my pottery to America and I decided to exhibit at the annual Safari Club International Expo. It was hard to get in and it took a lot of hard work to finally get there.” Since then she never looked back. She exhibits at the expo every year now and regularly exports to America. “I was lucky. I think I nailed the genre quite nicely – wildlife that is not a painting. And most important, my creations are made to be used, rather than just being decorative. I make functional art like hand basins, sinks, fruit bowls, vases, lidded jars, aroma lamps, candle holders, salad bowls and serving dishes. I am constantly looking for new challenges within the confines of the style and technique that I have developed. Most of my work is custom-designed,” she says. “The method that I use on my ceramics is a direct result of my lack of confidence in the use of colours, and my love for textures: A wax resist meets scrafitti technique. This way allows me to experiment with texture and monochrome tones that provide depth. I work exclusively in Stoneware and my pieces are high fired, in order to render a microwave- and dishwasher-proof end product. I value uniqueness and that is why I do not use moulds.” Every piece of Trixi’s pottery is hand thrown and individually designed and scratched. “ I have split my work into my patterned ‘Trixi Originals’ and my “Signature’ range, which consists of once-off creations. Because she lives a conscious, healthy life, Trixi came upon the idea to bring her craft together with her philosophy. She designed and made a range of health food equipment, like natural pickling crocks, kombucha brewing vessels, and a highly functional mortar and pestle, among other things. To create the ultimate smokey eye, apply a light eye shadow all over the lid. This base shade will create a smooth surface for the darker colours to apply evenly. Dust a medium shadow on the lower lid up to the crease. Continue layering the medium shadow until you get the desired intensity or apply a darker medium shadow in the crease. Line. Apply eyeliner along the upper lashline, making sure the line is thick enough to be visible when your eyes are open. Define with lip liner and concealer. Line your lip with liner that matches your natural lip colour. To avoid constant reapplying start by applying a stain in the colour you are trying to achieve. Apply it all over the lip and blot off any access on a tissue. Dust a thin layer of translucent powder on top to set it for even longer staying power. To keep colours bold and rich top of the stain with a lipstick in a matching shade. Balance out rich lip colour by keeping the rest of your makeup minimal and modern. We asked three Hartbeespoort businessmen what their ideal night in front of the fireplace looks like. Stef van Vuuren, Stef’s Table Winter would definitely not be winter without a fire in the fireplace. Without fail our fire burns in winter; it is the ideal companion. The scene is set with a glass of good quality red wine in hand, and soul foods – a hearty soup, oxtail or a bredie to warm the insides, while the fire does the rest. Add good company and life is bliss. Viv Rossouw, Dros Hartbeespoort As I spend the majority of my time in the restaurant, it is also my home from home. A fire just adds a certain ambience and creates a relaxed and cosy atmosphere. Warming up in front of the fire helps me unwind and get rid of the stress of the day. My food of choice is a hearty plate of pork ribs, washed down with a glass (or two!) of a good quality dry red wine. Paul Kruger, Hartiwood Films Nothing beats bushveld television. Our family love to relax in front of the fireplace in winter. An essential component of a proper open fire is good quality wood. I only buy wood from reputable and ethical sources. We usually start making the fire around five in the afternoon, and BisiBean coffee, pizza, biltong and blue cheese are non-negotiable items on the menu. With Johnny Cash or Radio Kalahari Orkes in the background, the scene is set for the perfect night in. 26 Get It Hartbeespoort Brits July 16 Winter tipples Compiled and written by: Kym Argo. July 16 Get It Hartbeespoort Brits 27 Brighten winter blues July is usually the coldest month of the year, but beautiful winter blooms will bring a splash of colour to your garden right when you need it most. 28 Get It Hartbeespoort Brits July 16 G et rid of your winter blues by planting cheery pansies, snapdragons, English daisies, tulips, irises, lilies, orchids, gladiolus, daffodil, camellia, azalea, dahlia, lavender, cornflower and more from early fall through late winter. They’ll overwinter, filling your borders, containers, and pocket gardens with months of flower power. And no garden should be without calendulas at this time of year; it guarantees a burst of sunshine when the weather fails you! Look for sturdy seedlings with good leaf colour. Ensure that the ground is covered with a layer of mulch, old newspaper, or straw to protect it from frost in the very cold areas. Mulch over the tops of beds planted with spring-flowering bulbs and see that the soil does not become too dry. When watering always do so later in the morning when the ground has warmed up. Avoid watering in the afternoon. Don’t overwater your plants in winter. Most pot plants go into a state of semi-dormancy in winter, so a good watering once every 10 days is sufficient. Sow early crops of hardy vegetables and herbs such as radishes, beetroot, spinach, lettuce, parsley and garlic chives in seed trays in a greenhouse or tunnel in light and airy conditions. Check out the seed racks at your favourite garden centre – there’s often an exciting new variety of a favourite old vegetable to be found. In warmer and frost-free areas peas, cauliflower, cabbage and root vegetables can be planted. Make sure your bird feeder is wellstocked – there’s not much food around in the garden for birds in the winter months. Asiatic lilies are available for planting now. These tall, beauties add height to borders and, in pots, stylish elegance to the patio or balcony garden. Look out for early flowering perennials like Osteospermum daisies, pelargoniums, wallflowers and diascias. Aloe hedgehog, Aloe ferrox and Aloe speciosa, sweetpeas, poinsettias and calliandra are all flowering now. Plant Aquilegias now for a beautiful spring show. PRUNING FRUIT TREES balanced tree with an open centre. Always cut cleanly, just above a good strong bud pointing in the direction in which it is desired the branch should grow. PRUNING ROSES Pruning of rose trees follows much the same lines. 1 Cut out all dead, weakly and badly placed wood, then cut back the remaining stems, to a good outwardpointing bud. The harder you cut back the more vigorous the resultant growth will be. 2 Prune a weakly-growing tree severely, to encourage more robust growth, prune a moderately stronggrower more lightly, and just trim back unripe wood and preserve balance in those roses which show a natural tendency to grow strongly. INDOOR PLANTS Pruning of rose trees follows much the same lines. Indoor plants will not require much water now and this should only be given when the surface of the soil really begins to look dry. Most of the foliage plants grown in pots make little growth at this season, which is the resting period. Keep them out of draughts, and clean them. Sponge the leaves over once a week with tepid water, and when you water them at the roots use water of the same temperature as the room. Primulas, cyclamen and cinerarias, now either in bloom or making their flower buds, will respond well to a little feeding once a week, and these, will require rather more water than the plants which are more or less dormant. Begonias bloom constantly and you can get varieties with either single or double flowers. African Violets are great favourites. Be especially careful how you water these, and don’t get moisture on the foliage. Steel butterfly pot plant decoration R59.99 from Sittigs Another good flowering plant is the Kalanchoe, whilst geraniums make first-class winter-flowering plants on a sunny windowsill. The pruning of fruit trees takes precedence over everything this month. There are two reasons to prune. One is to shape, and the other to keep the tree free from dead wood. 1 Cut all that centre stuff out first by pruning it hard back to two or three buds from the branch from which it sprang. This will leave a little spur, which is just what you want, for those spurs will develop fruit buds for next season. 2 Now cut back the other lateral shoots similarly. Those long leaders will remain, and these can now be cut back to about one-third their length. The final result should be a nicely Bird feeder R85 from Sittigs Sow delicious slab of seed from R69 www.yuppiechef.com July 16 Get It Hartbeespoort Brits 29 Bushatluxury its best A nts in your pants and ready for a real bush experience within three hours’ drive? Then best you make your way to the Waterberg region in Limpopo and book in at the Ant Collection. Comprising Ant’s Nest and Ant’s Hill, the classic and spacious stone and thatch homes are situated on a 12 500 acres private game reserve of pristine Waterberg bushveld in the Vaalwater district, which boasts 12 ecological zones - from open grassy plains to savannah bushveld. This diverse topography enables the reserve to naturally sustain over 30 Get It Hartbeespoort Brits July 16 40 species of game; including giraffe, sable and Roan antelope, buffalo, nyala, gemsbok, kudu, Livingstone eland, blue wildebeest, red hartebeest, zebra, bushbuck, mountain reedbuck, waterbuck, and blesbuck, to name but a few. Bird watchers should also flock to the area for the well over 300 species of resident and migrant birds. This vast array of experiences are usually not offered in one spot, and best of all, Ants is extremely familyfriendly. Both lodges have facilities ideal for kids, such as the heated swimming pool, a trampoline, sand pits, badmintonand volley ball court as well as a selection of toys and books. Why Waterberg? The Waterberg’s charismatic beauty and bio diversity covers 14 500 square km and has been recognised worldwide as a World Biosphere reserve by Unesco; the only savannah biosphere in the world. Its size is equivalent to 80% of the Kruger National Park and approximately 70% has already been designated a conservation area and home to the Big 5 and more. The Waterberg is immensely rich in cultural, archaeological and biological diversity and has a fascinating history. It has been inhabited for at least 2 000 years, with the earliest people being the San Bushmen. There are numerous archaeological sites and bushman paintings showing evidence of these hunter gatherers. What to do? You will need plenty of time to give each of the activities a try. There are the obligatory game drives, guided walks or walking safaris, pony rides, bug and spoor walks, learning how to become a ranger, horse riding lessons, fishing, horseriding safaris, snake and reptile talks and handling, swimming with the horses, mountain biking, archery, rhino tracking, Big 5 game drives and night sky safaris. Both Ant’s Nest and Ant’s Hill offer game viewing in the African bush – from horseback. For the more relaxed-inclined, there is a heated pool to lounge around. Or how about a relaxing half or full body massage to rub away all the city stress? Take a walk on the wild side on foot with a guide for an informative and interactive bush experience, of things that often go unnoticed in a game vehicle or on horseback. There is also a library and curio shop on the premises, or take an excursion in and around the Waterberg, such as a tour of Bushman paintings and Iron Age Sites as well as stunning river walks and picnics. Cookin’ cuisine Taking safaris and bundu bashing takes its toll and you need good grub to sustain you for all the activities you are going to pack in. Ants’ chefs are known for their fusion of scrumptious home cooking and fine dining. Choose from lunch laid out in the bush, dinner around a fire in the boma or next to the pool, breakfast on the deck or under a tree in the garden or arrange a private dinner. And don’t forget the high-tea prior to the afternoon game viewing. The chefs cater for all dietary requirements as well as simple children’s menus. Ants boasts a comprehensive wine list and wine tastings are also offered regularly. Fare enough One way to spoil a good breakaway is to get a loaded bill at the end of your stay with all the ‘extras’ you didn’t realise weren’t part of the package. At Ants, the daily rate, from R2 750 per adult, includes all local drinks (soft drinks, spirits, beers and house wines), horse riding, game drives and night drives, game walks and walking safaris, mountain biking, rhino tracking, campouts, fishing, bug walks, the snake and reptile handling, and bush lunches and sundowners. Romancing the stone The Waterberg with its spectacular views is the perfect wedding venue and its secludedness makes it the ideal honeymoon destination. Think romantic private dinners, bush lunches, sundowners, candle-lit baths and the opportunity to have your own private safari guide. Get married on the top of a mountain or under a shady Acacia tree. For the more traditionally inclined there is a pretty thatched church designed by Sir Herbert Baker in 1914 in the middle of the bush, close to the reserve.
