Jones, President Kenya Fuemmeler, Principal Sr. Jean Dietrich, SSND, Assistant Principal Alumni, Parents, Grandparents, Friends and Business Partners, Thank you! As we prepare this year’s Annual Magazine I cannot help but reflect on the many ways people give of their time, talent and treasure to our foundation and high school. Helias Foundation sponsors several events each year on behalf of Helias Catholic and its ongoing mission of raising funds by increasing the endowment to benefit the high school long-term. The outpouring of support from alumni, friends of Helias and businesses is overwhelming. Helias Foundation and Helias Catholic High School are very fortunate to have so many generous people who give to our foundation and school because they recognize the importance that it has had in their lives and they want to be a part of a community working together to make Helias an even better place. Whether it be through volunteering to help on a committee, giving of their time to help with various activities and events, sharing their talent to help the benefit of Helias and our students, or giving a financial gift, we are very blessed. MIKE BRUNS I have often shared my experience and heard other alumni and friends talk about their Helias experience and how it transforms student’s lives and prepares them to have positive impact within their families, community, and places of employment. Visiting with people around the school and in the community the “Helias Family” is mentioned frequently. It is a wonderful feeling to go so many places and run into someone who went to Helias or knows a Helias graduate. It is incumbent upon the Foundation to ensure that they build a financial base in order to continue to provide an exemplary learning environment for future generations. The Foundation is able to do this by supporting longterm financial stability for a quality Helias Catholic education based in faith, knowledge and service to others. DANA FRESE 2015 HELIAS FOUNDATION BOARD PRESIDENT As you go through this Annual Magazine, I hope you will remember the many ways your contributions of time, talent and treasure have truly helped our students and school community. Together we can do wondrous deeds. Thank you for all you do for Helias Catholic High School and Foundation. We are truly grateful. Sincerely, Mike Bruns Director, Helias Foundation w w w.heliasfoundation.org 3 Welcome THE CLASS OF 2 015 to our newest alumni Welcome and Congratulations to our newest alumni, the Class of 2015! The OVC Freshman of the Year Award was established in 2005. Kaitlyn is the first Southeast female athlete to receive the honor. Matt Rundle, ’11 lives his faith and utilitizes the critical thinking skills he formed as a Crusader. As someone who walked the hallways of Helias, he also understands the importance of connecting with current students, who need the opportunity to associate former students to their current reality. Matt remembers the challenges of deciding on a life path, all the while earning good grades, and being an active member of the Helias community. “Helias was both a great incubator and launch pad for me as I prepared to leave home for college and beyond,” stated Matt. “I think it's important for students to be ambitious about their future, whether that leads them to study music, philosophy, computers, or whatever. Helias provided me with lifelong friends and an encouraging environment that allowed me to pursue my goals. The fostering environment and academic preparation I received of Helias prepared me to accept Notre Dame and have a firm footing there intellectually,” said Matt. Not only did Helias equip Matt with a strong academic foundation, but strongly rooted his faith in God. While at Helias, Matt participated in two school sponsored mission trips to the Sonora Desert of Mexico. Due to the remote nature of these villages, regional priests could not visit these communities during Holy Week. Matt’s work on this trip brought the Holy Eucharist to during this important liturgical week. These mission trips, provided by the Campus Ministry office at Helias, nurtured the seeds of Matt’s faith. At Notre Dame, Matt majored in Computer Science while also studying abroad in London, and earning a spot on the club rowing team. In addition to excelling in his academic endeavors he interned here in Jefferson City with Huber & Associates and then for GE Aviation. Graduating cum laude from Notre Dame opened wide doors of opportunity within the technology community. Matt currently works for Amazon in Seattle as a Software Developer. At Amazon, he contributes to the design, development, testing and maintenance of software for the software defined network stake for Amazon’s Elastic Cloud Computing services. Matt’s experiences at Helias and Notre Dame prepared him to live his faith. Matt’s mother, Mrs. Joan Rundle believes, “I can’t say enough about the firm foundation my son received at Helias that has continued to help him reach new heights and explore what is possible.” Strong schools build up strong students and communities, and Helias strives to strengthen the academic, faith, and physical development of students. Fr. Christopher Rehagen, ’05 was ordained a priest of the Holy Cross Fathers on April 11, 2015 in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. What stood out most for Father Rehagen was when the bishop laid hands on him and called upon the Holy Spirit to make him a priest. Fr. Rehagen offered a Mass of Thanksgiving on Saturday, May 23, in St. Peter Church where he was baptized, received his First Holy Communion, confirmed, and worshiped for the first 18 years of his life. St. Peter Church was the extension of his home where his parents and brothers prayed together and practiced their faith. Fr. Rehagen believes his years at St. Peter and Helias Catholic High School helped prepare him to answer the call to Priesthood and religious life. He believes the importance of Catholic education and your home parish set the groundwork for hearing God’s voice. w w w.heliasfoundation.org 5 CLASS REUNIONS Class of 1955 – celebrated its 60th reunion during the weekend of September 19-20, 2015. Thirty of the ninety St. Peters High School graduates, plus several classmates who did not graduate enjoyed a dinner at Bone’s Banquet Room. Prayer was offered for the thirty deceased classmates. On Sunday morning, they attended Mass at St. Peters Church and continued their celebration with breakfast at Oscar’s Classic Diner. Everyone enjoyed seeing and visiting with old friends and classmates. Class of 1975 – celebrated its 40th reunion on October 10, 2015. Saturday afternoon and evening began with Mass celebrated by Fr. Medina in the Helias Chapel and tour of the school, then social hour, dinner and catching up with fellow classmates in the Helias Commons. Class of 1975 – Initiates First Annual 40-Year Class Challenge! THANK YOU! Proud to support Helias Catholic High School 6 HELIA S FOUNDATION In celebration of their 40 year class reunion and to thank Helias for all it has given to their students, the Class of 1975 established the FIRST Helias 40year Challenge for the Helias Foundation Annual Fund Drive to celebrate their blessings over the last 40 years that will continue at Helias each and every year. The class of ’75 was challenged by the two Goedde families in their class who offered to match each and every dollar that the class raised for the Annual Fund Drive up to $2,000 from each couple. Every donation from each classmate was matched by Grace (Goedde) Abbott and her husband Jerry, as well as Mark Goedde and his wife Ann to make every donation from all classmates worth three times what they gave. In mid-August, the class of ’75 had raised over $8,000 for the annual fund drive, so the class issued a new challenge to reach $10,000 as a class which they reached and surpassed!! Thank you to the Class of ’75 for their many gifts to the Helias Foundation Annual Fund Drive and for establishing the new 40-year class challenge! We are truly blessed by your class spirit, generosity and all that you do for Helias! Fish and Fellowship offer Support! Helias Foundation would like to thank the members of our local Knights of Columbus Councils for hosting two fish fry events this year to benefit the foundation and our mission to ensure that we continue to build a financial base in order to assist Helias Catholic High School financially in providing an exemplary learning environment for future generations. Knights of Columbus Father Helias Council 1054 hosted one of their annual Lenten Fish Fries on Friday, March 6, 2015 to benefit Helias Foundation. Helias Council 1054 gifted the foundation with a check for $2,000 from the proceeds of this event. The 1st Annual Helias Foundation Fish Fry co-sponsored by Knights of Columbus Father Helias Council 1054, Bishop Michael F. McAuliffe Council 12992 and Monsignor Pleus Council 14906 was held on Friday evening, May 29, 2015 at the Cathedral of St. Joseph Undercroft to benefit the Helias Foundation. Approximately 300 patrons were served who also enjoyed delicious home-made desserts donated by many talented bakers in our community. The three councils presented the foundation with a check for $2,000 from this event. We are very appreciative of the Knights of Columbus Councils working together, giving of their time, talent and resources, as well as everyone who supported the fish fries to benefit the Helias Foundation. w w w.heliasfoundation.org 7 2016 HELIAS HALL FAME Congratulations TO THE INDUCTEES OF THE JAMES M. She is excited and honored to be working at Helias and proud to be a Crusader! Maureen is married with two children. Mark Rehagen states that his favorite class in high school was Latin, and he fittingly relishes the opportunity to help restore Latin into the curriculum at Helias Catholic High School. Mark is the father of four graduate sons of Helias (Christopher and Thomas, ’05; Stephen, ’10; and Matthew, ’14) and the husband of Susan (’79). Mark has taught Latin at the Junior High level for 15 years, and he is elated to bring to life the language that many people believe is dead, because, with all due credit to Ovid, “Rident stolidi verba latina.” Tim Rulo graduated from the University of Missouri with a Bachelors degree in Education followed in the past decade with a Masters degree in Health Education and Promotion and another Master of Education in Positive Coaching that he is currently in the process of completing. After many years in a local school district in similar positions, Tim was hired as the head football coach, head track and field coach, strength and conditioning coordinator, and teaches a leadership class as well that is offered dualcredit through Drury University. Tim’s personal coaching philosophy is, “To love and motivate young athletes to impact their lives toward Christ and to model and teach them to do right, do their best, and consider others in all situations.” He looks forward to implementing this daily with the students who he teaches and coaches. over Tom Smyth is currently in his first year as Director of Bands at Helias Catholic High School. In 1974, a group of committed leaders formed the Helias Foundation to help secure a stable financial future for Helias Catholic High School. It was formed as a separate, non-profit corporation with a separate board whose mission continues to be the betterment of Helias. The foundation’s funds are professionally invested and managed, and remain endowed for the benefit of the high school. As endowed funds, only the earnings are used to help meet the financial needs of Helias Catholic. Gifts to the foundation are a show of support for the mission of Helias Catholic High School, and are a vote of confidence for an enduring future. The annual fund drive is one of several Helias Foundation sponsored events each year on behalf of Helias Catholic and its ongoing mission of raising funds by increasing the endowment to benefit the high school long-term. It is incumbent upon the Foundation to ensure that they build a financial base in order to continue to provide an exemplary learning environment for future generations. The Foundation is able to do this by supporting long-term financial stability for a quality Helias Catholic education based in faith, knowledge and service to others. Built on a strong, historical base and a committed community, the foundation’s future remains bright as it provides unwavering financial support to Helias. As an endowed fund, the foundation will provide for Helias Catholic High School both now and in the future. Planned Giving is a vehicle by which foundation donors can provide for endowed gifts either during one’s life or at one’s passing for the benefit of our high school. The structure of these gifts can be as varied as the wishes and intents of the donor. Under a planned giving program, gifts can be made outright or made in part such as the retention of income for life from the donated asset until the passing of the donor. Other than outright cash donations, how can I contribute? There are several ways to contribute to the Helias Foundation. You can: • donate securities, real estate and life insurance. • make a bequest to the Foundation in your will. • set up a charitable trust. • establish a memorial gift when a loved one dies. Will a planned gift to the Foundation replace annual gifts to the Foundation Fund Drive? No. The Foundation serves as a way to donate accumulated wealth to meet long-term high school needs. Your regular gifts to the annual campaign are still important to meet current needs of Helias Catholic High School. Can I designate how income from my contribution will be used? We encourage unrestricted gifts to provide flexibility to meet future high school needs. However, you may designate how the income from your gift will be used, in consultation with the Foundation Board of Directors. If I want to make a contribution to the Foundation, what’s the next step? Contact Mike Bruns at the Helias Foundation. w w w.heliasfoundation.org 15 ROOTED IN FAITH, BUILDING ON EXCELLENCE FR. STEPHEN JONES President of Helias Catholic High School It is amazing how quickly a year passes when you are having fun! These past twelve months have been filled with lots of excitement at Helias Catholic High School! There are new faces in our hallways, in our administrative offices and classrooms, and on our fields and courts. In addition, ground has been broken and work is well underway on our new Science Center/ Chapel/Administration wing. This project is 98% funded and is slated to open in the fall of 2016. It is going to be an amazing facility which will reinforce our identity as a Catholic institution of learning while giving our science teachers the facilities and tools to do what they do best – teach! The “Rooted in Faith, building on Excellence” campaign is in full swing. We are currently still working on all phases of the campaign: contacting our lead donors, our major donors, and the wonderful members of our Helias community. The campaign total as it stands now is just under $4.2 million pledged. This number includes an amazing $3 million gift for the construction of the stadium, field, and track portion of the athletic complex. This portion of the athletic facility will have a day-to-day impact on over 60% of our students and will not be a venue for athletics alone; but will provide space for our growing marching band, our cheerleaders, and our 16 HELIA S FOUNDATION dance team. Moreover, it will be an extension of our classroom space for physical education and outdoor education classes. We are very excited to be able to meet the needs of our students – as well as those of our partner Catholic elementary schools and the general community – with this project. If we receive another $2+ million designated to the athletic complex we will be able to finish those projects and ensure the establishment of a strong fund for their ongoing maintenance and repair. An additional source of excitement is the recent opportunity we have received for a “matching gift” toward the capital campaign. A generous patron has come forward and offered to match the gifts of donors from the public phase of the campaign up to $3 million. This means that if our community can raise $3 million, it will instantly turn into a total of $6 million, putting us in a great position to move closer to reaching our goals. Remember, gifts to the capital campaign can be designated to the endowment fund, the fine arts facility, or the athletics complex. So, if you haven’t committed to the campaign yet, please do so and help us make the most out of that matching gift opportunity. Since opening in 1956, Helias Catholic High School has always worked to provide a high school experience that has combined a quality education with a safe, faith based, environment. The school has sought to accomplish this mission by remaining as affordable as possible so that every student might have access to a Helias education. Ours is a school that was built by the local community and is a school committed to educating and forming the young people of this local community. w w w.heliasfoundation.org 17 IT'S AN AMAZING TIME TO BE A CRUSADER. The average tuition in our country for a diocesan Catholic High School is over $9,000. The tuition rate at Helias Catholic for the 2015/16 school year is $4,855 (active Catholic) and $6,000 (non-Catholic). The “active Catholic” rate reflects approximately 67% of the cost to educate a student at Helias. Despite the rising costs of providing an education, we are extremely proud that we have been able to keep our tuition rate as low as possible. However, while our current tuition rate is only 54% of the national average, we still recognize that our tuition cost is such that it prohibits many students from being able to attend Helias. We are firmly committed to living out the mission and goal of our school, which is to educate and form as many young people as possible. We certainly do not want the high cost of education to prohibit any potential student from receiving the benefit of an education at Helias Catholic. This is why the endowment portion of the capital campaign is so important! Every dollar we raise to strengthen the endowment has a direct impact on our students, both in the present and in the future. As we undertake the ongoing work of our capital campaign, the leadership of Helias is renewing its commitment to do our best to keep Catholic education affordable. It is our goal to instill in our community the sense of urgency needed to assist our school in living out this commitment. Money doesn’t grow on trees (believe me, I’ve looked!) and we receive no public funding. So we must fall back on that old saying “It takes a village to raise a child” and add the tag line “and it takes a community to support a school.” That is why we will be redoubling our efforts to ask people to support the Helias Foundation, whether that be through the endowment portion of the current capital campaign or through the foundation’s Annual Fund Drive. 18 HELIA S FOUNDATION Our community has been extremely generous in the 59 years of Helias’ history and we will be counting on that generosity and support for the next 59 years! It is certainly an amazing time to be a Helias Crusader! I am truly convinced that we are moving Helias Catholic High School in a direction which will strengthen it academically, spiritually, fiscally, and athletically for generations to come. Are we perfect? Of course not! Do we have room to grow and improve? Yes, we do! However, I know that we are making great strides and working hard to better serve our students every day. I am humbled to be the president of this institution and am doubly thankful for the gifts of Almighty God working in and through this community! Live Jesus in our hearts, forever! #SaderStrong w w w.heliasfoundation.org 19 The Annual Helias Foundation Homecoming 5K was held on Saturday, September 26th when numerous runners/ walkers filled the streets around Helias Catholic High School. This year’s theme was “Let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.” – Hebrews 12:1 The homecoming 5K is one of several Helias Foundation sponsored events each year on behalf of Helias Catholic and its ongoing mission of raising funds by increasing the endowment to benefit the high school long-term. The net proceeds from this year’s homecoming 5K event were contributed towards the Foundation’s endowed funds. With age groups from 10 and under to 60 and over in both female and male categories, Alexa Lamb took first place overall in the female division with a time of 22:27 and Jay Langton took first place overall in the male division with a time of 24:08. Please consider participating in this event next year during the Homecoming activities on Saturday, October 8, 2016. 20 HELIA S FOUNDATION PROUD TO SUPPORT HELIAS CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL w w w.heliasfoundation.org 21 F U N D 2015 TOTAL: D R I V E $285,923.37 Thank You for Fortifying our Foundation of Faith! We encourage all supporters of Helias to look into their Matching Gift Programs with their employers. We also encourage retirees to look into their former employers as well. Matching Gift Programs will typically match a certain percentage of their retired employee’s gift. It is a simple and easy opportunity to increase giving.
