Fall 2010 - Home of the Innocents
THIRD QUARTER l VOLUME 69 l FALL
2010
More Children to be Served
Grand Opening and Dedication Set for October 28
Later this year, Home of the
Innocents will be poised to provide an
unprecedented level of care to this region’s
most vulnerable children and their
families.
Since opening our new doors in 2003,
there have been children on waiting lists
for most of the services delivered by
Home of the Innocents. Currently, there
are unmet needs, especially in the areas
of medical, dental, and behavioral health
services, that are out of the reach of
disadvantaged children and children with
disabilities, such as the medically fragile
child and the child suffering from Autism.
Home of the Innocents’ answer to these
challenges is the Phase II expansion of five
new buildings, including the addition of
50 new beds for our traditional services,
and brand new services in the fields of
medicine, dentistry, and behavioral and
mental health. The Home plans to go from
serving two thousand children
per year to over seven
thousand.
Please mark you calendars for October
28, 2010, as we celebrate the dedication
and grand opening of our Phase II
expansion project! Come see the new
buildings first-hand and learn more about
the programs and services we will be
providing to children in crisis.

The Hockensmith Pediatric
Assessment Center (HPAC) will
house medical, dental, psycho-social,
psychiatric, radiology, audiology, and
family assessment and treatment
services. These services will guide
and provide the best, most costeffective treatment for children with
disabilities, low-income children,
and children of abuse, abandonment,
and/or neglect. The HPAC will also be
the new home of the Autism Services
Program and its staff. The HPAC
will feature the “Village Pharmacy,” a
non-profit pediatric pharmacy which
will allow for specialized pharmacy
compounding for the best treatment
for children with extraordinary
medical needs.

to help children in crisis: children who
are the most vulnerable children in our
society. All proceeds from this event
will benefit children at the Home.

In August, Jefferson County Public Schools ( JCPS) started the
new school year, and the Home was happy to add the
Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Academy to the list of schools
opening their doors to students this school year. The JCPS
school system has always been a good friend and partner to
the Home, and has educated many of our residents. This year,
that partnership grew even stronger. The Weinberg Academy
is a three-classroom schoolhouse which will serve children in
the Home’s care. Children’s classroom programming will be
administered and provided by JCPS. Outside the school
day, this facility will provide essential training and meeting
space to meet the needs of Home of the Innocents’
programming and external community groups.
The Kosair Charities Pediatric Convalescent Center
at Home of the Innocents provides long-term care and
respite services for medically fragile children, under
age 21 years, who qualify for skilled nursing home care.
Two additional KCPCC residential cottages, Rainforest
Trail and Zephyr Cove, will add 30 new skilled nursing
beds for all levels of care, increasing our capacity from
46 to 76 children. The Home is currently receiving
referrals from hospitals and other organizations in
the community. For more information or to make a
referral, please contact the Medical Services Coordinator at the
Kosair Charities Pediatric Convalescent Center at 502.596.1127.
Race Location: Bernheim Arboretum
and Research Forest, 2499 Clermont
Rd., Clermont, KY 40110 (20 minutes
south of Louisville).

We also provide respite care for families who have medically fragile children at home. Respite provides
24-hour care in our facility for up to 14 days. Respite care is scheduled a year in advance in order for
families to plan for their break. We currently have 35 families participating in our respite program.
Race Day: Saturday, October 23, 2010
Race Day Registration: 7:30-8:45 a.m.
Kids in the Kosair Charities Pediatric Convalescent Center
(KCPCC) currently participate in aquatherapy about once
a month off-site. The medically fragile children served at
the Home’s KCPCC benefit greatly from the liberation and
weightlessness only found in a specialized therapy pool. The
Kay & Jim Morrissey Advanced Therapy Center will include a
large therapy space, room for large equipment therapy activities,
therapy during inclement weather, and a customized therapy
pool allowing for more frequent aquatherapry for our KCPCC
residents. This facility will be open to all of our residents, as well
as children throughout our community.
Residential and Emergency
Shelter Cottages
And finally, the Home is opening a two-story building designed
to serve its residential and emergency shelter clients. The
building is divided into three separate cottages. The first floor
is a 10-bedroom cottage, which will specialize in serving preteen and teenage girls who have been sexually abused or have
sexual behaviors that make it difficult for them to live safely in
a community environment. Treatment will focus on addressing
past abuse; teaching healthy coping skills; improving self esteem;
and safety planning. Over the years, Home of the Innocents has
seen a rise in the number of clients that present this need.
The second floor is divided into two separate cottages.
Emergency shelter and Project Keepsafe clients will reside in one of the 5-bedroom cottages. The
purpose of second 5-bedroom cottage has yet to be determined, but the Home is looking at a few
different populations that are currently in need of services. As always, the Home is dedicated to
helping children in the community who are in crisis and have no other avenues of hope.

and quality initiatives, will be top priority of
all who utilize the facility. She will work with
collaborative partners within the community
to coordinate a variety of services under one
roof. Electronic medical records will serve as
a resource for other professionals who may
provide additional care, outside the facility, to the
children we serve.

role he will be responsible for ensuring that
safe and effective medication utilization is
implemented at the Home as the pharmacy
consultant. He will also serve as a primary
source for drug information for other
healthcare professionals, patients, and their
families. Matt will also oversee the medication
distribution process to ensure safe and efficient
handling and administration of medications.
Dr. Martin will serve as the Medical Director
and Primary Care Provider for the Hockensmith
Pediatric Assessment Center. She will serve as
the primary physician ensuring that efficient
processes along with “top notch” care are in place
to enhance the experience of each child visiting
the center. Her depth of experience in the field
of pediatrics, centering around children who are
in crisis, will provide an environment of care and
understanding to families and children, which is
the hallmark of the Home.
Thanks to our
Volunteers
Approximately 50 information
technology staff from GE volunteered
for a day at the Home this summer.
Their volunteer project involved
applying a sealant onto all the wooded
areas of the children’s playground and
the surrounding fence. Thank you GE
volunteers! You truly do bring good
things to life for our children!
The youth group from Allegheny
Center Alliance Church in Pittsburgh,
PA, completed a service project with the
Home. Their activities included sorting
and organizing donation items, as well
as a musical performance, a puppet
show and “bubbles” with the KCPCC
residents. We truly appreciate their
time, donations and the smiles they put
on our children’s faces that day!

Planned
Giving
Understanding Your Options
What is planned giving? It is a type of gift
that requires help from another; you can’t
do it by yourself !
You can write a check and give it to your
favorite charity all by yourself. However,
you may want to include your favorite
charity in your will or to make a gift to
charity and receive an income for life.
Maybe you want to give your home to a
charity yet still live in it for the rest of your
life, or provide an income to charity now
so that your children or grandchildren
can later receive an asset in a manner that
reduces their tax burden. All of these are
examples of planned giving!
Planned giving allows you to expand your
possibilities and realize more options
for those you care about. Some planned
gifts are incredibly simple and some are
quite sophisticated. Each one provides the
potential to address a need and to provide
you with great satisfaction.
Consider this example. Ruth Anderson
lives in modest circumstances. She depends
on a pension and Social Security, plus
supplements from her CDs. She is a longtime donor to a local charity and discovered
that she can get a much higher rate of
income from a life income gift to that
charity, than from a CD. She wants to leave
a nice gift to that charity, but is concerned
that her assets will be diminished at the
end of her life. Upon making that gift, she
will get a high, fixed income every quarter
for as long as she lives, a nice income tax
deduction, and the satisfaction of making a
gift during life that was far beyond what she

ever thought possible. She is thrilled with
the “win-win” outcome.
John and Margaret Campbell live a
comfortable life and annually make
significant gifts to several charities. They
have children for whom they would like
to provide a nest egg 20 to 30 years down
the road. Through one of their charities,
they learned of a plan that provides income
to the charity for a set number of years,
then transfers a substantial asset to their
children at the end of the term. John and
Margaret are very excited that they can
make the arrangements now, with greatly
reduced or no transfer taxes, regardless of
how much the asset appreciates during the
time the plan is in place.
While these planned giving examples are
very different, they are similar in that each
is made during life, each offers its own
unique set of benefits, and each necessitated
the help of others to make the gift. Most
importantly, each
reflects the deepest
values the donors
admire most.

Amelia Seligman raised $130 for the Home after
receiving one dollar from her grandparents to
start the fund. She told her family that she “just
wanted to help sick kids!”
Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Sue and Rich
Travis’ (left) ‘Fishing for Friends’ is held the last
Saturday in June. Linda Medley (the Home’s VP
of Resource Development, right) accepts the
donation from this year’s event.
Gina Stephenson (center left) donates much
needed diapers and toiletry items on behalf of the
LPN graduating class of 2010 at Galen College to
(L to R) Lisa Cobb, Kelly Collins and Beth Muckler
from the Home’s development team.
Please join us for an enlightening
lunch hour. We’ll provide lunch
and a brief tour so you can view
first-hand the wonders of the
Home!
Lunch and the tour are from
Noon-1 p.m. on these Fridays:
