FOREWORD
I was most pleased to have been asked to work with MAUK
on this lovely project and privileged to write a few words
for this unique book. It always begins with talk and ideas
amongst friends – the creative and inspirational moments
– which then have to be put in to practice! This has been
achieved through the dedication, talent and generosity of
spirit of many people, and of course, the support of the
Heritage Lottery Fund.
In reading this book I have smiled so often at the delightful
memories given by elders. The sections on myths, legends,
customs and rituals are packed full of interest for readers of
all ages. You will find your own favourite pages, but mine are
those about Ona Sadhya – the description of ‘pappadams
as big as a full moon’ is beautiful poetry.
Maveli naadu vaneedum kaalam,
manusharellarum onnupole
amodhathode vasikkum kaalam
apathangarkkumottillathanum
When Maveli ruled the land,
All the people were equal.
People were joyful and happy
They were all free from harm.
Onam is about the best human values – justice, care,
equality, peace and love – but it is also about fun. Enjoy!
