The Festival of Onam symbolizes the “old world charm and goodness” and recreates the image of a world order when people lived in peace and perfect harmony. It is celebrated in Chingamasam, considered the spring season of Kerala, when the Landscape of Kerala appears in it’s most pristine beauty bedecked with the splendors of nature, skies filled with joyous birds returning from hibernation and paddy fields glittering with golden grains. O Pathanamthitta District Association-Kuwait, which represents a sizable population of expatriates of Pathanamthitta District in Kuwait who love their homeland and are proud of their centuries old tradition and rich cultural heritage, is celebrating Onam festival as a grand event on 26th of September 2014. On behalf of the Executive Committee of Pathanamthitta District Association, I extend ONAM GREETINGS and BEST WISHES to all our Members, friends, well-wishers and sponsors. I also express the hope that the message of unity, peaceful co-existence, harmony, equality, and brotherhood conveyed by the unique festival of ONAM pervades the minds and thoughts of all in our society and make this world a better place to live in. Pathanamthitta District Association has been functioning in Kuwait for the last fourteen years as a responsible socio-cultural organization catering to the needs of it’s community, supporting it’s members and their families and interacting with Indian community for common goals. The Association which marked it’s foray into the social horizon of Kuwait in 2001 has now become one of the most vibrant and leading socio-cultural organizations among the Indian community in Kuwait thanks to the unwavering loyalty, dedication and solidarity of it’s members and the tireless efforts and perseverance of it’s leadership. Many of the Association leaders and founder members, who served the Association creditably in it’s formative years and extended tremendous efforts for the progress and integrity of the Association vanished from the shore of Kuwait to return to the tranquil and peaceful retired Life in India. Pathanamthitta District Association fondly remembers them and is grateful for their invaluable contribution and their sincere participation in all it’s efforts and activities. Ever since it’s inception, Pathanamthitta District Association has been functioning as a nonpolitical and non-religious organization on the bedrock of truth, justice and fairness to all, and all our activities and programs have been guided by ethical values and humanitarian considerations. Our motto is to function as a credible and respectable social organization caring and serving our community upholding the fundamental theme of “creating and fostering a spirit of understanding, uniting all in the bonds of friendship and good fellowship”. 18 Besides it’s social activities in Kuwait and organizing cultural and recreational activities for the benefit of it’s members, the Association pays attention to the developmental needs of the District as well as the social concerns, backwardness and sufferings of the people of Pathanamthitta District. The Association has now launched a new scheme titled HOPE SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP to financially support the education of children belonging to poor families in the backward areas of Pathanamthitta District. More details of the Scheme are illustrated in a separate article in another page of this Souvenir. The HOPE SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP scheme was launched in Kerala at Kuzhikkala CMS Higher Secondary School and was inaugurated by the honorable Rajya Sabha Speaker, Prof. P.J. Kurian in June 2013. The launch of the 2nd phase of this scheme will take place on October 6, 2014 at Konni Republican Vocational Higher Secondary School and the inauguration will be done by the honorable Minister of Revenue, Shri. Adoor Prakash. As an introspection, I can confidently say with gratification that Pathanamthitta District Association has justified it’s role as a benevolent socio-cultural organization and has done it’s utmost to serve it’s community in Kuwait and the people of Pathanamthitta District within our limited resources. However, I have no hesitation in saying that we have “miles to go and miles to go” in the service of humanity, for which we need to bring in more capable and socially conscious people into our fold and find ways to raise our financial resources. I request the support of all our members and the kind and generous people among the Indian community in Kuwait in our noble efforts and help us wipe out the tears of our hapless brethren in Kuwait and back home in India. Remember that “helping others makes a difference”and I assure that your contributions will never go in vain. The journey of Pathanamthitta District Association continues as a gentle stream embracing the shores of humanity caressing and soothing the distressed souls all around. On behalf of the Executive Committee of Pathanamthitta District Association, I take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to all our members and well-wishers who stood with us and supported us with their generous contributions and sincere endeavors. The Brahmin said that he just wanted as much land as could be covered by his three steps. The King was surprised to hear but agreed. ONAM, is the grandest festival celebrated in Kerala, India. It is a festival of flowers, colours, feasts, dances, games and moreover of togetherness and all-around merriment. It is mostly during this time that the Malayalees, natives of Kerala fly to their family home, wherever they are. The harvest festival of Kerala, ONAM, falls on Shravan day in the month of August or September. After a lush harvest, Onam is the time for the farmers to celebrate the bounties of nature and make merry. ONAM is a community event, a celebration of a time in the past when all men (and women) were equal. Though the origin of the harvest festival is deeply rooted in Hindu legends and mythology, Keralites across the religious spectrum celebrate the festival ONAM with traditional gaiety and enthusiasm. A learned adviser of the King, Shukracharya sensed that Vamana was not an ordinary person and warned the King against making the promise. But, the generous King replied that it would be a sin for a King to back on his words and asked the Brahmin to take the land. The King could I Like most festivals of India, ONAM too has a legend associated with it. The legend of King Mahabali is the most popular and the most fascinating of all legends. Onam celebrates the visit of King Mahabali to the state of Kerala every year. The festival is celebrated with fervour as King Mahabali is greatly respected by his subjects. King Mahabali is also popularly called Maveli and Onathappan. The King realised that he was no ordinary Brahmin and his third step will destroy the earth. Mahabali with folded hands bowed before Vamana and asked him to place his last step on his head so that he could keep the promise. The Brahmin placed his foot on the head of the King, which pushed him to patala, the nether world. There the King requested the Brahmin to reveal his true identity. Lord Vishnu then appeared before the King in his person. The Lord told the King that he came to test him and the King won the test. King Mahabali was pleased to see his lord. Lord Vishnu also granted a boon to the King. The story goes that the beautiful state of Kerala was once ruled by an Asura (demon) king, Mahabali. The King was greatly respected in his kingdom and was considered to be wise, judicious and extremely generous. It is said that Kerala witnessed its golden era in the reign of King Mahabali. Everybody was happy in the kingdom, there was no discrimination on the basis of caste or class. The King was so much attached with his Kingdom and people that he requested that he be allowed to visit Kerala once in a year. Lord Vishnu was moved by the Kings nobility and was pleased to grant the wish. He also blessed the King and said even after losing all his worldly possessions, the King would always be loved by Lord Vishnu and his people. It may be noted Mahabali was the son of Veerochana and grandson of Prahlad, the devout son of demon King Hiranyakashyap. Mahabali belonged to the Asura (demon) dynasty but was an ardent worshiper of Lord Vishnu. His bravery and strength of character earned him the title of «Mahabali Chakravathy» or Mahabali - the King of Kings. Looking at the growing popularity and fame of King Mahabali Gods became extremely concerned and jealous. To curb the growing reign of Mahabali and maintain their own supremacy, Aditi, the mother of Gods seeked help of Lord Vishnu (the preserver in the Hindu trinity) whom Mahabali worshiped. ONAM basically celebrates the mythological King Mahabali, and it is celebrated as a tribute to his golden rule and his sacrifice. It is the day of the visit of King Mahabali to Kerala that is celebrated as ONAM every year. The second day, Thiruvonam is the biggest and the most important day of this festival. It is believed that King Mahabali visits his people on the second day. ONAM Festival welcomes the spirit of King Mahabali and assures him that his people are happy and wish him well. Every year people make elaborate preparations to welcome their King whom they affectionately call Onathappan. They wish to please the spirit of their King by depicting that his people are happy and wish him well. It was said Mahabali was very generous and charitable. Whenever anybody approached him for help or requested for anything he always granted. Lord Vishnu disguised himself as a dwarf and a poor Brahmin called Vamana. He came to the Kingdom of Mahabali, just after Mahabali performed his morning prayers and was preparing to grant boons to Brahmins. Disguised as Vamana, Vishnu said he was a poor Brahmin and asked for a piece of land. The generous King said, he could have as The people of Kerala, irrespective of their faith, caste and class, remember the golden era of King Mahabali they all loved, and welcome him on his annual visit to their home. This festival is also important because of its secular character. It is celebrated with equal fervour by the Hindus, Muslims and Christians. KING MAHABALI & ONAM 26 not imagine that the dwarf Brahmin was Lord Vishnu himself.. Just as King Mahabali agreed to grant the land, Vamana began to expand and eventually increased himself to the size of cosmic proportions. With his first step the Brahmin boy covered the whole of earth and with the other step he covered the whole of the skies. He then asked King Mahabali where is the space for him to keep his third foot. Governments and people around the world have a lot to learn from the message associated with ONAM. Dr CG Suresh, MD, FRCP (Lon) Heart of the Matter Senior Consultant Cardiologist, Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital. a particular form of bad cholesterol (Lpa) is present even in the blood of newborn Indian babies! The important question to ask is; why this sudden burst in CHD incidence! Embracing the bad life style is surely to be blame! Your heart is made of heart muscle that pumps the blood, valves and other intricate tissues that help the heart muscle in its function and arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle itself. These arteries are called coronary arteries. In some people, cholesterol (fat like substance in the blood) gets deposited in the inside of these arteries that can lead to narrowing (atherosclerosis). Sometimes, blood can clot at the site of these narrowing and completely block the blood circulation to a part of the heart muscle. This is called a heart attack. How do I know I am having a heart attack? People often ask ‘ how will I know if I am having a heart attack’. Majority of the patients will get chest discomfort, it is important to remember that it is usually not a pain. Very often, it will be a feeling of heaviness or a pressure in the chest. It can also take the form of a heartburn, which people may mistake as ‘gas’. It is interesting to note that this discomfort often is felt in the middle part of the chest and does not happen on the left side of the chest (you are right, the heart is sitting slightly to the left side in your chest). It almost always happens at rest and may be accompanied by excessive sweating. The pain or discomfort may travel from the chest region to the left or right arm and sometimes to the jaw or the back. When there is only narrowing and no blood clot, people get the chest discomfort, but only related to exertion. This is called angina and though this is less serious than the pain of heart attack that occurs at rest, it also needs immediate attention. If you get pain or discomfort in the chest, do not waste time drinking antacids (like gelusil) or lying in bed thinking that it will go away by itself! You need to get to a hospital casualty at the earliest. Doctors find out about the condition of the heart by doing an ECG (Electrical tracing of the heart). If heart attack is diagnosed, the patient will be admitted to the CCU (Cardiac Care Unit). Here a special medicine is given to dissolve the clot in the artery. The sooner it is given the better and that is why it is important to get to the hospital at the earliest. If the treatment is delayed, irreparable damage can happen to the heart. The four main reasons for higher incidence of heart attack in Indians are smoking, bad dietary habits, increasing diabetes and lack of exercise. Globalization has resulted in the higher intake of cheap oil and fat. Also, the consumption of energy rich refined foods has gone up. Not only that this results in high blood levels of cholesterol, such foods are poor in fiber and essential micronutrients that protect against CHD. Lack of exercise along with changing food habits increases the chance of diabetes. Smoking adds oil to the fire by exaggerating the atherosclerosis, thus leading to narrowed arteries and heart attack at a younger age. How to Prevent a Heart Attack Many young people are walking around with the narrowing in their coronary arteries! They will not know until they get a heart attack and it may be too late! Majority of the people who get a heart attack may not get medical care early enough be saved! The important message is; ‘catch it before it gets you’. Those who already had a heart attack or angina should aggressively change their life style along with the treatments advised by the doctor. Those who are not affected should take necessary precautions, mainly life style modifications. Life style alterations in both the above groups involve stopping smoking, healthy diet, exercise and medical consultation as appropriate. Smoking Smoking damages the thin lining of the blood vessel and causes narrowing. It also increases the clotting of blood, thus making it a perfect recipe for heart attack. I will give you four good reasons to stop smoking. The first is that a smoker has six times the risk of getting a heart attack. Smoking also substantially increases the risk of stroke and lung cancer. It not only affects you; your family especially children’s health are at risk from passive smoking. Lastly, stopping neutralizes your risk in 3 years and all the damage from smoking can be reversed if you stop. Exercise Many of us do not exercise at all or do not do enough! Exercise can reduce the bad cholesterol; increase good cholesterol (that protects the heart) and also helps to reduce diabetes and blood pressure. Any form of exercise is good; walking, jogging and swimming are the best. AHA (American Heart Association) recommends 30 minutes a day for at least 5 days a week. Diet Good food habit is essential in reducing the cholesterol and blood pressure. Avoid foods that contain saturated fat; e.g. butter, fatty meats, and tropical oils. Reduce the amount of polyunsaturated fat that is in oils like corn oil, margarines, cookies, commercial fried foods, etc. Instead, monosaturated fat can be consumed in moderation e.g. olive oil, canola oil, low fat dairy products, nuts like almond, cashew and hazel nut (of course not fried). Plenty of legumes, whole grains, vegetables and fruits should be included in the diet. Garlic and Soya products are good and to some extent may even reduce cholesterol. One should avoid excess alcohol and salt, both of which may predispose to high blood pressure. What about Indians? Conclusion Scientific studies from US, UK and other countries have shown that Indians are four times more likely to get a heart attack when compared to other nationals. While CHD is declining in the west, it is rapidly increasing to become an epidemic in developing countries including India. In the next decade, there will be 100 million CHD patients in India Even if you are otherwise healthy but above 40 years, check your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood glucose once in 2 years. If you are at a higher risk of developing heart disease (family history of CHD, diabetes etc.), these checks need to be done as early as 20 years. If any of the tests are abnormal, it needs to be carefully followed up with a doctor. If you are an Indian, you belong to a great country; but you are also at a higher risk of developing Coronary Heart Disease. However, this form of heart disease can be avoided to a great extent by adopting healthy life style behavior. alone (Statistics of the World Health Organization). Indians have a genetic susceptibility to get CHD and this is reflected by the fact that 27 28 “Kadammanitta Smrithi Mandapam” IS½\n« Imhy inà kap¨bw 29 Chronic Kidney Disease – A Silent Disease To Reckon With Dr. Georgi Abraham MD, FRCP, Madras Medical Mission Hospital, Chennai, India; Email:[email protected] (www.tankerfoundation.org) Madhusudan Vijayan, Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai, India hronic Kidney disease (CKD) is produced by a scar in the kidney which is often asymptomatic, slowly progressive and irreversible. The epidemic of diabetes, improved life expectancy and an ageing population in the future can be expected to contribute to the surging incidence of CKD in the near future disease are due to CAKUT (Congenital abnormality of the kidney and urinary tract). In an adult, each kidney weighs about 150 g and are situated in the low back below the rib cage. The kidney function is measured by a metric called glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The stages are given below. The prevalence of chronic kidney disease varies between 10% to 17% in the general population, and it is mostly seen in ageing individuals who are prone to develop high blood pressure and diabetes mellitus. A small percentage is due to hereditary and congenital diseases. Inflammation of the filter (glomerulus) is another cause of CKD nephrons. Some people are born with unilateral agenesis (born with single kidney) is not uncommon and is seen in 1 in 750 individuals. Majority of these individuals continue to live normally. As stated, the most common cause of CKD is long standing diabetes mellitus in both developed and developing countries. C The kidney develops in utero by 10th week and functions inside the womb. In children, roughly about 50% of kidney 30 Each kidney has anywhere between 420,000 to 1,000,000 The presence of blood, protein (albumin) in urine is a warning sign of kidney disease. The kidney functions should be measured by estimating the GFR every year in people with diabetes mellitus and hypertension and with congenital or hereditary kidney disease. The commonly used tests are serum creatinine level, a complete urine analysis (reliable laboratory). The commonly used imaging for kidney disease is an ultrasound of the kidney, ureter and bladder which is available in most of the places if symptoms of kidney disease are stated. The serum creatinine depends on the muscle mass of the individual, and usually should not exceed 1 mg/dL in young adults. With ageing population, there is an age related decline in GFR due to an ageing kidney. legs, weight gain due to salt and water retention, passing stones, frothy urine, diminished urine output, frequent urination, especially at night, family history of kidney disease. As per the guideline of American Society of Pediatrics, every child should have blood pressure checked from the age of 3 and thereafter annually. Ageing population are more prone to both diabetes mellitus and hypertension which are causative factors Avoidance of kidney toxic medications will slow the progession of kidney disease. As kidney disease is silent, one should always tell the consulting physician about the CKD and hence should avoid drugs which are prone to worsen kidney disease. Stages 1 to 4 of CKD are managed conservatively and stage 5 CKD requires dialysis or transplantation. As the kidney disease progress from stage 1 to stage 5, dietary modifications, salt restriction, blood pressure control (should not exceed 140/90 mm of Hg), avoidance of alternate medicines are backbone of treatment. Everyone shall enjoy the human right to education.Pathanamthitta District Association (PDA) has a sincere commitment to society and has decided to help the ‘future generation’ to accomplish their dreams. The school scholarship named ‘Helping hands of Pathanamthitta Expatriates’ (HOPE) is our first step towards that. As they say future of India is in the hands of generation next. Pathanamthitta District Association (PDA) firmly believes in this concept and launched ‘HOPE’ SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME with the aim of supporting the education and developing talents of children, the future of India. Education is the best investment we can provide to our children. ‘HOPE’ PROJECT OUTLINE Pathanamthitta District Association, taking into consideration the general status of our district in various arts and academic competitions, whether it is in the state level or in all India level, has decided to pay attention to this area. Analyzing the facts, PDA has realized that contributing for this social cause might improve the potential of the District in curricular and extra - curricular level. One of the major setbacks attributed in this situation is the financial backwardness of the parents/students. PDA’S HOPE scholarship scheme is aimed at providing financial assistance to the students (who excel in studies, arts and sports) from Pathanamthitta District. The scholarship would be based on the merit of the student and on the financial position of his/her parents as well. The capital requirement will be met by donations from the members of the association and/or from other people/organizations that have the goodwill to take part in a genuine movement. There will be a provision for persons/organizations to sponsor a student as well. A sponsor may continue to extend their helping hands even after the school level education of the student. However at this stage association is planning to give scholarships only till the higher secondary level. PDA is planning to execute this project in three stages. STAGE - 1 Provide the kids with the basic necessities (school bags, uniform, text books, notebooks etc.) at the start of an academic year. This is aimed for children who are economically backward irrespective of their political or religious background. STAGE 2 In the later or advanced stage of this project with the help of school authorities PDA finds out academically brilliant students who are struggling to pay their school fees and other expenses at school. PDA has decided to extend their helping hands to such students by paying their total expenses at school. STAGE 3 Our future vision is to help these students further to pursue their dreams by helping them pay their fees for a professional course or vocational training. SELECTION PROCEDURE PDA Executive Committee will select schools and request the head of the institution to submit a recommendation, meeting the requirements of the project, by the end of each academic year. A subcommittee of the PDA EC will ratify the selection by physical verification of the facts. The head of the institution will be requested to testify that the selection is strictly based on the norms given by PDA EC. The copies of mark lists/certificates of achievement shall also be attached with the recommendation letter. Association has no objections if the students get any other scholarship/financial benefit from other sources. MODE OF ASSISTANCE Selected beneficiaries will be paid the amount in two instalments by cash/ cheque /demand draft, one in the beginning of the academic year and the other in the middle of the year. The amount will be given in a public meeting organized in the premises of the selected school in the presence of headmaster of the school, Parents Teachers Association President, an office bearer/ representative from the PDA and any other dignitaries invited by the PDA EC. In the case of art/sport beneficiaries, the amount will be paid as a lump sum in the middle of the academic year. ACCOMPLISHMENTS PDA is proud to announce that we have already provided the scholarship to CMS HSS, Kuzhikala on Thursday, June 26, 2014. Deputy Speaker of Rajya Sabha Prof. P.J.Kurian inaugurated the function and handed over the first installment of the scholarship to Principal Mrs. Jessy TG. PDA has also decided to give the scholarship to selected students of Republican Vocational Higher Secondary School, Konni on coming October 6, 2014 in a public function attended by dignitaries and people’s representatives of the area and Office Bearers and Executive Committee Members of PDA.The function will be inaugurated by Hon.Minister of Revenue, Shri.Adoor Prakash, who is also the MLA of Konni. Conclusion The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little. Best Degrees for More Employment Opportunities Mr. P.G Varghese - Managing Director MEI for University Services | Kuwait Educational Centre | Shaheen Training Institute t starts in kindergarten, when the teacher asks each young student the all important question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Choosing a career is a quandary that follows us throughout our school years, and the pressure is on to figure out what type of training or education you should seek. There are so many different kinds of jobs, with a full spectrum of sub-specialties and a diverse range of skill and training required for each occupation. I There are also quite a few different reasons for choosing one career over another. People follow a certain job path and learn a skill because they have an interest or even a passion for a certain subject. They go into a field of work because it is a family business, or they choose a training course because they know there are a lot of available jobs for that occupation. People sometimes choose to study for a degree because they believe they’ll get a great-paying job in that field upon graduation. Of course, one of the best ways to choose a career path is to examine a list of the highest paying jobs and then find out how to enter one of those job markets. The Indian job industry is booming and making its mark. With the new age where students get pre-placement offers setting in, now the time has come when you get a high salary job even before you move out of your college. A lucrative offer always make you thing twice for a job offer. Money factor is really important while choosing a career. If you are getting high paying jobs then you surely want to pursue that career. Some of the following fields are recommended: Master in Business Administration: The most sought after course, Master in Business Administration is one of the highest paying career options in present day. With globalization and increasing competition in the market, organizations are seeking knowledge and expertise of management professionals to make their business profitable and lead the competition. Airlines Industry: Indian airline industry is going through a sea change. Earlier it was just government airlines which were leading this industry, but now the situation is quite different. Lots of new airlines have come into the market. Due to this change, this industry is experiencing noticeable growth. The new airlines are hiring more and more new pilots and support personnel to deal the increasing demand. Software Engineer: India’s information technology field has seen big growth over the last decade. This is one of the most promising and rewarding career options. In this career professionals can earn a lot in this industry. Mechanical, Electronics, Chemical Engineer: Engineering is a vast field and one can create his/her career in this sector. This sector requires lots of hard work and innovation. To excel in this field one thing is most important and that is dedication towards work and abilities to create something new. This is really a good career option for those who want to try their hands in creating something new for the industry. In this field a person can earn good amount of money. In this sector salary depends upon your experience and hands-on experience of the field or knowledge of the field. If you have completed your graduation from one of the top IITs then there are fair chances of that you may get picked by industry before completion of your program. Talking about the salary for mechanical, chemical or electronic engineers, generally it’s the information technology sector that commands the most and in case of others it is generally 20 per cent lower than the salaries offered by IT sector. Chartered Accountant: If a career in management does not attract you much then you can look forward to a career in Chartered Accountant or the CFA. Every company big or small needs their account to be maintained and that is the place where you can fit in. If you love to play with numbers and you are number crunching wizard then this is certainly your cup of tea. This is not new career option but still many students are not much aware about the prospects and potentials of this field. You can find a job in private sector but government sector is the one who has monopoly this field and anyone who wants to make a career in this field will definitely get a good salary package and bucket full of perks. If you have good knowledge of your field you can earn a handsome salary as a fresher. Medical Career: A career in medical field is considered as one of the most respectable career. The more experienced you are, the more you get paid - the only factor which will determine your salary package in Medicine. It’s an evergreen job. There is no season, no recession, not a single factor (including the falling rupee) that can cut your monthly package in this field of expertise. You may be a doctor, a surgeon, a dentist, or a consultant; your fees are always decent that comes up with an incomparable reputation. Offshore Drilling: India’s public sector Oil and Natural Gas Corporation is the country’s highest profit churner. Pay scale in this industry is very good, with offshore oil drilling career being the highest earner. This sector provides you all kind of perks such as car purchase advance, home furnishing, lifetime health care and retirement stipends. While money is important, do not give more importance to compensation than your interest. Know your strengths and competency before joining any course. Also, while the salary may be unattractive today, it could reach a new high tomorrow. So what are the ideal factors to consider? Before you make a choice analyze what is it that you would like to do, in short your area of interest. Step 1: Assess your true abilities, interest and personality either yourself or by visiting a career counseling centre. Step 2: Based on your interests make a primary list of careers. See to it that these careers are in sync with your personality and abilities Step 3: Now explore all the careers in your primary list. Get to know more about the job profiles, requirements, prospects, how to develop your career, a typical day in the life of the professional among others. Step 4: Once you’re done with the above, pick the one that suits you the most. 55 56 57 5588 59 PATHANAMTHITTA DISTRICT ASSOCIATION-KUWAIT EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE FOR THE YEAR 2013 – 2014 Office Bearers Sl.
