WE1OE STILL PAYING
1-wo ttito« concerning the local wat«tfn*t «xpkMiot
on Kay 19, I960 will prob*bly never be known, Wh«t the
cause of the incident was and how ranch the MfUfenee
coat.
' lf ; .
Ihe expense local taxpayers were put to as the result of the blast,%did not end with* the repair o( homes
and medical treatment that was necessary as the result
Every so often, something crops up that indicates we am
still paying, and will prabsMy continue to pay. for years
to-'come, for the fact that the Peaasyhnitia Railroad,
with total disregard for the safety of local lives and property, permitted handling of high explosives in large
quantities, only a few hundred yards from the city proper.
Ihe railroad property, it was announced recently by
the Middlesex County Board of Taxation has bees given
a reduced assessment because its local holdings have deprecated and decreased.
^
It was the waterfront explosion that was largely responsible for the decrease and depreciation of local hoJd>
ings of the Railroad, for the dock and adjacent facilities,
formerly' taxed were blown to pieces, and natwaHy conaideambie damage was done to buildings of the company
nearby. However, the taxpayers on the other hand* had
to repair their homes, but for them there is no depreciation allowance and no reduction of any kind. They go
right on payjng taxes at the old rate, and now wiH have
to pay more taxes in addition, to make up for the decrease in the revenue formerly received from the railroad.
WE PAY THE RAILROAD'S BILLS AGAIN?
While on the, subject of the railroad and its holdings
here, there is a matter that well might be looked into, In
our opinion, and that is the supplying of four fire alarm
boxes to the Pennsylvania Railroad for protection b its
yards here. Three of these boxes are listed as being located at the docks, and one of them at the Yardmaster*s
office.
How these boxes got there no one seems to know,
but we know they have been there foe some time, and
it would seem in the face of the fact, that years back, the
railroad must have anticipated the possibility of seme
sort of accident, such as that which occurred, if it wanted
the protection of three fire boxes in the dock /rea wham
the explosion occurred and another one at the Yartfmaster's office, not far from the docks.
No such small area in the city is so well protected
by fire alarm boxes, as is this piece of private property
from which the local taxpayers are barred.
\
The cost of maintaining these boxge is a considerable portion of ihe cost of maintaining the city fire alansT
system, and if one private industry is provided with fesjr
boxes at the expense of the city, it seems only fair* Hurt
any other local industry, by the same token, sfessjM be
entitled to at least one fire alarm box on its pisinlssi,
and pursuing this thought further,* how far could a thing
like this go and where would it end?
'
The Pennsylvania Railroad has demonstrated that It
is not concerned with the welfare of local dtisana Md
their property, and we cannot see why we should be> concerned about their property, to the extent that we furnish them with four fire boxes, dedicated exclusively to
the protection of private property. These boxsV should
be relocated we believe, in some residential Motion of
the city, to protect lives and homes of those who aro
not only paying their own bills, but must meet additional
costs because of the carelessness of the Pennsylvania
Railroad.

when they believed that the K.uth
WM flat. Although, it is a scii-ntifufact that the Earth is mum), recent
atudies have lead many scientists to
believe that many planets, Earth,
Venus and Mars included, began as
flat gaseous discs.
Some astronomers, advance the
theory that these extensive, gaseous discs were formed from the
aame cosmic cloud that produced
the sun. The cloud is believed to
h a w bean relatively flat and this is
supposed to account for the fact
that the planets tend to move
tion they revolved in about the
same orbit and at the tame distance
as they do today.
The many elements contained in
the original gaseous matter were
lost as the planets evolved into
more stable forma. Complete
evaporation did not take place, how*
ever, until the planeta had become
smaller and more compact.
As these facts are discovered and
investigated the world of outer
space moves constantly closer to
our own existences.
