WINES OF THE
KING VALLEY
AUSTRALIA’S UNIQUELY DIVERSE PREMIUM WINE REGION
KING VALLEY, NORTH EAST VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA
THE KING VALLEY IS AUSTRALIA’S MOST DYNAMIC AND
DIVERSE WINE REGION, A REPUTATION CREATED BY
INQUISITIVE WINEMAKERS WHO LONG AGO RECOGNISED
THE REGION’S COOL CLIMATE POTENTIAL. YOU CAN SEE THE
RESULTS IN THE VINEYARDS AND IN THE CELLAR DOORS – WINES WITH SOMETIMES
UNFAMILIAR NAMES. NAMES SUCH AS ARNEIS, PETIT MANSENG, PINOT GRIS, TANNAT,
BARBERA, SANGIOVESE, SAPERAVI, MARZEMINO, AND TEMPRANILLO. ALONGSIDE THE
MORE TRADITIONAL VARIETIES THAT FLOURISH HERE SUCH AS RIESLING, CHARDONNAY
AND SHIRAZ. THIS EXTRAORDINARY MIX OF THE TRADITIONAL AND ECLECTIC GIVES THE
KING VALLEY THE EDGE AS AUSTRALIA’S MOST EXCITING AND DIVERSE WINE REGION,
WINNING HIGH PRAISE FROM WINE JUDGES AND CRITICS.
THE REGION HAS BEEN BUILT ON THE EFFORTS OF ENTHUSIASTIC WINEMAKING
FAMILIES PROVIDING THE DRIVE THAT IS BUILDING THE KING VALLEY’S OUTSIZED
REPUTATION AS AN EXCITING WINE REGION. HERE IN THE WELCOMING CELLAR DOORS
YOU CAN MEET AND TALK WITH THE FAMILY MEMBERS. YOU’LL FIND THERE’S NO
SHORTAGE OF GOOD CONVERSATION OR ENTHUSIASM ABOUT THEIR WINES, AN
ENTHUSIASM BASED ON STRONG FAMILY VALUES AND A COMMITMENT TO BUILDING A
LONG TERM FUTURE FOR THE GENERATIONS TO COME.
THE KING VALLEY WINE
REGION INCLUDES THE
VILLAGES OF MILAWA,
OXLEY, MYRRHEE,
WHITFIELD, CHESHUNT
AND MOYHU.

THE CLIMATE IN THE KING
VALLEY TENDS TO GIVE THE
FRUIT BOTH CONCENTRATION
OF FLAVOUR AND GOOD ACID.
THIS MEANS THAT THE WINES
HAVE RICH INTENSITY AND A
FRESH LIFT AT THE FINISH.

“
THE TOTAL VINEYARD AREA IN THE KING VALLEY IS 1,800HA,
ABOUT HALF OF ALL PLANTINGS IN NORTH EAST VICTORIA.
HERE YOU WILL FIND AN EXTENSIVE RANGE OF PREMIUM GRAPE
VARIETALS FROM THE TRADITIONAL TO THE INNOVATIVE – ALL
WINNING HIGH PRAISE FROM WINE JUDGES AND CRITICS. FROM
CHARDONNAY AND RIESLING TO PINOT GRIGIO, SANGIOVESE
AND CABERNET SAUVIGNON, SPARKLING AND DESSERT WINES
AND OTHERS IN BETWEEN – THE CHOICE IS YOURS.
WHITE GRAPE VARIETIES
ALBARINO: Regarded as Spain’s superior white variety; aromatic variety with a
pronounced fresh acidity.
ARNEIS: An innovative Italian variety being grown in the valley, producing an
unoaked wine with a profusion of flavour possibilities – citrus, ripe pears,
apple and lime.
”
On your travels, take note of the number of
new varieties on offer in Victoria’s King Valley.
They are popping up here, there, and
everywhere, waiting for you to discover
them. J A M E S H A L L I DAY
”
CHARDONNAY: The valley’s most widely planted and popular white grape
variety, used for sparkling wines and wood aged dry whites, varying from rich
and opulent through to the more restrained styles.
PINOT GRIGIO: One of the newer varieties in the valley, a delightfully spicy
wine with flavour nuances varying from pear to spiced apple custard to
toasted almonds.
PROSECCO: An Italian variety used for producing a much loved aromatic
sparkling wine. Saluté!
RIESLING: The classic German variety that is proving ideally suited to the
region, producing wines with an appealing freshness and a zesty citrus tang.
SAUVIGNON BLANC: A winning style – all gooseberry and lychee and guava
flavours in the one crisp package. Can be both oaked and unoaked.
RED GRAPE VARIETIES
BARBERA: Another Italian that calls the King Valley home. Savoury blackberry
and herb flavours with natural acidity.
CABERNET SAUVIGNON: There are more plantings in the valley of this variety
than any other, and for good reason. The wines display classic mint and
blackcurrant flavours that blossom beautifully with ageing.
MARZEMINO: A spicy Italian with hints of violets behind the summer berries.
MERLOT: All dark cherry, ripe berry and plum fragrances – a wine with soft
tannins and a ‘love me’ attitude. A very cuddly style!
NEBBIOLO: A wine with generous tannins and acid underlying the cherry,
roses, and strawberry tart flavours. A reputation for being a long-lived wine.
PINOT NOIR: The upper reaches of the valley in particular provide the rich
fruit, steeped in flavour, that provides the basis for the valley’s remarkable
sparkling wines.
SANGIOVESE: The valley is nationally acknowledged for its high quality
Sangiovese – a medium to full-bodied red that resonates with flavours of
aniseed, prune and dark cherry.
SAPERAVI: The Russians are coming! A wine with a seriously deep red colour
and blackberry, mulberry, and ripe cherry flavours. Plush tannins and good
grip are indicators of ageing potential.
SHIRAZ: The French variety that Australia has made its own. King Valley styles
display white pepper and spice with lifted berry and ripe plum flavours.
TANNAT: A full bodied French variety, thickly textured with a dense red colour.
Spicy and mouth filling.
TEMPRANILLO: The main variety of Spain and one of the world’s classic
grapes. It produces deeply coloured and highly flavoursome wines (think dark
cherries and blackberries) on a medium palate.
