Message from the Chair
“Always do right. It will gratify some and
astonish the rest.” -Mark Twain
For 25 years, our staff and volunteers have
continued to build and strengthen Vogel Alcove
by following Mark Twain’s simple yet powerful
maxim. Every professional, employee and volunteer
at Vogel Alcove is deeply focused on our core
values of commitment, empathy, excellence through
continuous improvement, inclusion, integrity, a
nurturing environment, respect and safety.
During the past year, we adopted a new long range plan with a singular
mission: to provide the youngest children of homeless families with the
foundation for success. Our vision is that every child in our community has a
home, a self-sufficient family, and a pathway to success in school. Our fervent
hope is that no child in Dallas should be homeless again.
As I begin my term as chair of the board, I’d like to thank our immediate
past chair, Alan Perkins for his superb leadership during a period of challenges
and transition. I would also like to acknowledge Leanna Cruz, who founded
the Auxiliary, and Karen Foster, who has assumed the position of president
of our Auxiliary. Thanks also to Allan Thompson who helped us launch our
Facebook page, which features articles and videos of our wonderful volunteers,
as well as stories about people who are making extraordinary contributions
to the Alcove.
I’d like to give special recognition to Diane Miles, our interim executive
director, for assuming a leadership role at a particularly challenging time.
On behalf of the entire board, I’d like to thank Diane for her commitment to
our mission.
As your board chair, I promise Vogel Alcove will continue, in the spirit
of Mark Twain, to always do right, gratifying some, astonishing the rest, and
always, always, devoting all our energies to promote the welfare of our precious
kids. Thank you for your commitment to the children of Vogel Alcove.
Recent Grants of Note
A special thank you goes out to the TI Foundation, Maverick Capital
Charities, and the Dirk Nowitzki Foundation that generously granted
funds to help cover the cost of Vogel Alcove’s exemplary early childhood
education and child development program.
At the Alcove, homeless children have the opportunity to thrive in a
safe and nurturing environment that prepares them to enter school and
overcome the trauma of poverty and violence. We salute these major grant
contributors for their commitment to providing the youngest children of
homeless families with the foundation for success!

talented artist is one of a select few who have been honored by
The Kennedy Center with the prestigious Mark Twain Prize
for American Humor.
The 2011 Arts Performance Event will not only feature
outstanding entertainment but will also fund at least half of the
Vogel Alcove’s vital childcare and social services. The need
is great. With jobs remaining scarce, more and more families
with young children are facing the trauma of homelessness.
Leading the 2011 fundraising effort will be event CoChairs Cindy and Charles L. Gummer and Patti and
Blaine L. Nelson.
Chuck Gummer is Chairman of Comerica Bank-Texas
Market. Headquartered in Dallas, Comerica Incorporated
is a financial services company with three major business
segments: The Business Bank, The Retail Bank, and Wealth &
Institutional Management. Mr. Gummer serves as a member
of the Management Policy Committee and Senior Leadership
Team. Before being named to his current position, he was
appointed President and CEO of Comerica Bank-Texas. Earlier
in his 40-year career, he held various management positions
with the bank. Mr. Gummer is active on many civic boards,
including Downtown Dallas, Southern Methodist University
Cox School of Business, and the Better Business Bureau
of Dallas. He has served as Chairman of Dallas Summer
Musicals, United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, United Negro
College Fund, and Dallas Affordable Housing Partnership.
Mr. Gummer received a B.S. from Ohio State University and
an M.B.A. from Wayne State University.
Blaine Nelson is Managing Partner for North Texas,
Oklahoma and Arkansas with Deloitte. In the United States,
Deloitte has 45,000 professionals working in four key business
areas — audit, financial advisory, tax, and consulting. As a
partner with the firm for more than 20 years, Mr. Nelson has
served as Lead Client Service Partner or Advisory Partner for
several large corporate clients. Previously, he served as the
Mid-America Regional Managing Partner for all Tax Services
and Managing Partner of Tax Services in the Salt Lake City,
Utah office. His clients have included American Airlines, Dell
Inc., Pavestone Company, Turner Construction, and Ford Motor
Credit Corporation. In addition to his professional affiliations
with organizations like the American Institute of Certified
Public Accountants, he has served on numerous boards,
including Dallas Opera, United Way of Metropolitan Dallas,
and Dallas Symphony Orchestra, where he was the Immediate
Past Chairman of the Board of Governors. He earned a B.S. in
Accounting from the University of Utah.
FALL 2010
Providing invaluable support to the event chairs will be
Vice Chairs Debbie and Gerald Barnes; Lael and Peter
Brodsky; Lynae and Dean Fearing; Rita Sue and Alan
Gold; and Tracy and Kent Rathbun whose exceptional
skills and fundraising acumen are key to the success of the
event. Mr. Barnes, the board member responsible for the
event, and his colleagues at Neiman Marcus will again invite
their international vendors to participate as advertisers in the
commemorative program. Mary Lee Broder will serve as
the new chair of the Ad Solicitation Committee. In addition,
Rick Lacher will chair the committee charged each year with
recruiting significant event sponsors.
On October 19, immediate Past Chairs Erin and Mike
McKool graciously hosted the kick-off of the 20th annual event
(see photos on pages 4-5). Mrs. McKool spoke with feeling about
the meaningfulness of Vogel Alcove’s work from her unique
perspective as past event chair and current Board member. She
was followed by Mr. Gummer, who recognized the past chairs,
vice chairs, and top sponsors so important to the success of
the 2011 event. AT&T Inc. made the very first sponsorship
commitment, returning as a Paramount sponsor. Susan and
Larry Hirsch renewed their Presenting sponsorship. Lael and
Peter Brodsky are again participating at the Advocate level.
Two Inkind sponsors will provide critical support for the tenth
consecutive year. Fossil, a Presenting sponsor, will donate the
design and production of the event commemorative program.
Cooksey Communications, led by Gail Cooksey, will provide
public relations expertise as a Benefactor sponsor.
Thank you to the event co-chairs, vice chairs, committee
chairs, Benefit Committee, and Vogel Alcove board of directors
who work to make the event a success. Since the event’s
inception, these outstanding business and community leaders
have helped make a difference in the lives of nearly 12,500

New Alcove Staff
From August through the beginning of November, Allan
Thompson, a masters degree candidate from the University of
Missouri, worked with Vogel Alcove to research how non-profit
organizations can use social media to build awareness, recognize
volunteers, and increase support for their causes. Allan created
a Facebook page for the Alcove and a blog that will help drive
traffic to this page and to the Alcove’s website.
The Alcove’s goal is to build an online community of
followers. If you are already a member of Facebook, from
the landing page click the “Wall” tab; then click the “Like”
button on the top right. Share the Alcove page with your
existing network, who will be more likely to view the page if
the recommendation comes from you. If you are not a member
of Facebook, you can still view the Alcove page because it’s
public. Please take a moment to visit http://www.facebook.
com/vogelalcove where you can watch short videos and read
about volunteers and others who support the Alcove. It’s a
great way to learn what’s new at Vogel Alcove.

Holiday Store Wish List
December—a time of joyful
celebration of holidays and gift
giving— can be an especially
difficult time for homeless parents and their children. For
more than 20 years, Vogel Alcove has worked to make
that holiday time less stressful for the families we serve
by hosting a Holiday Store. Parents are invited to “shop”
for gifts for their children at this Holiday Store at no cost
to them. The gifts of toys and clothing are items that have
been donated by generous individuals, corporations, schools,
service clubs, churches and synagogues throughout the city.
We are now collecting these donated items to display
in our Holiday Store on Thursday, December 16. Please
consider participating in this happy event, either by your
generous donation of new toys and/or clothing, a donation
of gift cards or money with which staff can purchase items
for the store, or by volunteering on the “shopping” day
(December 16) to assist parents as they shop. We request
that donated items be received at the Alcove by Tuesday,
