Providence St. Mel School Annual Report 2009
Dear Friends,
What a year this has been for Providence St.
Mel! We are delighted to review our year with
you and share the highlights of what has been
a truly remarkable time. What began as a high
school determined not to close is today a school
that offers an education of the highest quality
to more than 550 students in grades pre-K
through 12.
Throughout our 30-year history, Providence St. Mel has been described with such labels as The
School that Refused to Die, A Beacon of Hope, The Hard Work School, The School that Works,
and, more recently, A Model for Urban Education. Each label captures the essence of our school;
each attests our capacity to instill in all of our students — from our pre-kindergarteners to our
seniors — the fundamental values of responsibility, self-respect, self-reliance, perseverance, and
commitment.
In 2008-2009 academic year, our students met the challenges. We are proud and delighted to
acknowledge their achievements. As has happened since our school began 30 year ago, 100
percent of our high school graduates have been accepted to four-year colleges and universities.
Further, since 2001, over 50 percent of our graduates have been accepted to some of the most
prestigious institutions of higher education in the country. Carrying on this tradition of a perfect
college acceptance rate, the members of the Class of 2009 also merited $3.2 million in scholarships
from the colleges and universities they are now attending. School-wide, our students scored at
the 75th percentile — 25 points above the national norm — on the Terra Nova Achievement Test
in 2009. In state and local academic and arts competitions, our students continue to distinguish
themselves, winning awards and impressing judges and peers.
When we consider where our school has come from and where we are today, how many
accomplishments can be listed and how many success stories can be told — when we consider
our 30 years and this single year — we thank each of you for your continued support and your
sincere faith in our mission. You have provided the means to make a Providence St. Mel education
attainable for as many students as possible. Indeed, every contribution, no matter how large or
small, has been, is, and continues to be vital to our students and our school.
Providence St. Mel: Inspired is what we are. Creating inspired lives is what we do. On behalf of
our students whose lives continue to be enriched by the support of our donors and friends, we
thank you.
Sincerely,
Paul J. Adams III

A Message from the Chairman
of the Board of Trustees
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, our teachers, administrators, staff, and,
most important, our diligent students and their appreciative families, I take great
delight in thanking you for your steadfast support of and financial investment
in Providence St. Mel School. It is only with your generous assistance that this
extraordinary school has been able to achieve thirty years of academic excellence.
In the 2008-2009 academic year, we had much to celebrate! You, our many
supporters and friends, share greatly in this momentous year and truly special
anniversary.
From the very beginning, Providence St. Mel has embraced and promoted discipline and
hard work, high expectations and school-wide accountability, challenging curriculum and
effective classroom instruction. To break the devastating cycle of poverty and dependence,
this special school provides a transformative education to very determined students,
instilling in them confidence and pride, and enabling them to excel both academically and
personally. From day one, this school has achieved results, producing graduates who attain
college educations, pursue satisfying professional careers, and contribute constructively to
their families and communities.
Over these three decades of academic excellence, Providence St. Mel has seen manifold
changes, witnessed many impressive accomplishments, reached several lofty goals, and
passed a number of notable milestones. Doubtless, without such caring partners as you, our
school and our students would never have come this far and achieved so much. It is you and
your fellow contributors that enable this school to create these inspired lives.
My fellow trustees and I provide the school with vital guidance, direction, and financial
resources. Moreover, we act as conscientious stewards of the financial means you have
contributed — this wise investment you have made in this exceptional school located in a
community that still offers little hope and fewer opportunities.
As you read this annual report and reflect on the accomplishments of not only the 2008-2009
academic year but the past thirty academic years, I hope that you will recognize the vital
role you have played and can continue to play in helping to create inspired, successful, and
remarkable lives. Great are the value and importance of your investment, which continues to
yield high returns: the graduates of Providence St. Mel.
As we look back on the year and on the many years, we also look ahead, knowing that what
got us here — hard work — will get us there and beyond. The future for Providence St. Mel is
already underway!
Sincerely,
Michael D. O’Halleran

Beverly Baar
I joined Providence St. Mel in 2001. My main role is the
department chair for all of the related arts programs in prekindergarten through high school and I also teach music
for the lower school. Working hard each day to do my very
best for our students, I believe that they take this example
to heart and are themselves inspired to work as hard as
they can. Interacting with
students from all grade
levels, I’m amazed by the
individual gifts and keen
efforts of these determined
students and I’m energized
by my colleagues, who
value the ethic of hard
work and respect the high
standards this special school
consistently achieves.
Teresa Cullen
Currently in my 13th year at Providence St. Mel, I started
as the sophomore and junior counselor and volleyball
coach and am now the athletic director, volleyball
coach, and physical
education teacher.
I believe it is
essential to instill
an ethic of hard
work and a sense of
accountability in the
youth of today. Not
only do we preach
the word, we live the
word. I am proud
of the responsible,
productive young
people we send out into the world, and I feel blessed to be
a part of shaping their lives.

Christel Ward
I started at Providence St. Mel as the high school business and
technology teacher in 1997. Today, I am the dean of students
and faculty. As dean, I inspire students by showing them that
their actions have consequences and that they can choose a
better course. Part of
the discipline process
is allowing the student
time to think about his
or her inappropriate
behavior and to make
plans for a better choice
in the future. To observe
the progress of students
through the academic
year — as they learn the
lessons of self-discipline,
respect for others, and
dedication to their studies
— is something that I find most fulfilling about my role as
an educator.
Joan Gerig
In my 11th year as librarian, I continue to choose hundreds
of books that will inspire our students. Many are used for
research (starting with kindergarten), while others are for
informational or recreational reading. I select books that
reflect our students so they
will be inspired by people who
are like them and are growing
up in communities similar
to theirs. I love my position
because I get to work with
preschoolers to high school
seniors. It’s great to work with
a team of educators who want
the best for our students and
who work for the best.
11
Adrienne Hawkins-Turner
Now in my 14th year, I currently serve as the department
chair for high school math and as a member of the leadership
team. I teach honors algebra and
survey of engineering as well as
coordinate our Worldwide Youth
in Science and Engineering
team and lead efforts for the
preparation for the PSAT and
ACT tests. I expect all my
students to do their best and be
their best, and I work to show
them how to do and be just that.
As an educator, I find it so fulfilling to play a part in helping
our school provide the knowledge, skills, and inspiration so
that each student has the opportunity to excel. The reward is
the result: the college acceptances and, ultimately, the career
opportunities for our graduates.
Julie Jovan Sheerin
I came to Providence St. Mel in the fall of 2000 to teach
kindergarten, drawn by the quality of the school, its important
mission, and the opportunity to
make a difference. In 2004, I was
selected to be the division chair
for grades kindergarten through
second, and with the addition of our
pre-kindergarten in the fall of 2008,
I now oversee all the lower grades
up to fifth grade. As our youngest
students continue to learn how to
learn while they are gaining skills
and, like little sponges, soaking
in knowledge, I remind these
bright-eyed and eager children that they will go to college, they
will succeed, they will grow up one day to be something and
someone special. Knowing that their teachers care so much
about them inspires them to want to learn even more. For me,
I am inspired and amazed by our young students, who seem to
progress in leaps and bounds. No tortoises here. These young
learners are greyhounds!

I’ve been teaching at Providence St. Mel for 13 years, teaching
physical science to freshmen and eighth-graders. Currently
I am the middle school
department chair and
science department
chair. I also serve as the
coordinator for Saturday
tutoring. For the past nine
years, I’ve been teaching,
tutoring, and mentoring
students nearly six days a
week. Students know that,
if they need assistance
or some extra help, I am
there for them. I hope my
dedication, like that of my
colleagues, inspires them
to apply themselves to
attaining impressive goals.
Seeing how our students
persevere despite real obstacles that would discourage most, I am
fired up daily to become a better teacher — a better person.
Marci Van Gilder-Rubin
In the summer of 1998, I applied to Providence St. Mel in
response to a one-line advertisement: “Junior High English
teacher needed.” That tiny
newspaper ad changed my life.
Today I am the professional
development chair and provide
support to all our teachers as
they grow professionally, giving
them guidance in meeting our
high expectations and, ultimately,
in giving our students the best
education possible. Teaching at
Providence St. Mel is demanding,
and I hope that teachers feel supported, appreciated, and
inspired after working with me. To be sure, I’m inspired by
the wonderful people who come each day to make this school a
better place.

Inspiring Young Lives
Providence St. Mel Launches Pre-K Program in the Fall of 2008
Recognizing that the years before a child reaches kindergarten are the most critical in his
or her life to influence learning, Providence St. Mel launched a pre-kindergarten program
in the fall of 2008. With our new pre-kindergarten, we entered a significant new phase in
our development as an exceptional college-preparatory school. We now begin even earlier
in children’s lives to prepare them to undertake a disciplined education that will lead to
acceptance to a four-year university or college.
Too often, pre-kindergarten at many schools is little more than unstructured, variable
activities. At Providence St. Mel, however, our pre-kindergarten is academic-based rather
than play-centered. Our class size is capped to no more than 20 students to allow for a 10to-1 student-to-teacher ratio. We teach our youngest learners the core disciplines of reading,
language arts, mathematics, science, social studies and social skills. As well, we focus on gross
and find motor skill development that will begin their academic foundation.
What better way to celebrate our 30th anniversary,” said Principal Jeanette DiBella, “than to
put in place a program that will have such a fundamental impact for these children and their
education — and for our school.”
This new prekindergarten provides
our four-year-olds
with an enriching
educational experience
that prepares them to
enter the kindergarten
ready to learn. It is
never too early to start
success and to inspire
young lives.

Inspired by a True Story
Providence St. Mel Board of Trustee member J. Thomas Hurvis was inspired
to bring the story of the school to the big screen.
Feeling that the nation was approaching an educational crisis, Mr. Hurvis
thought that if other schools could emulate PSM, the problem could begin to be
solved. “This school,” said Mr. Hurvis, “has a proven track record of success over
the past several decades, delivering an educational product that truly
serves the children and offers the best model for other urban schools.”
His brainchild, The Providence Effect, is a documentary that chronicles
the history, outlines the instructional principles, and highlights many of
the accomplishments of Providence St. Mel.
Production was no easy task. Mr. Hurvis decided the best way to get
the message across to the audience was to somehow capture a day in the
life at this extraordinary school. And the filming began.
J. Thomas Hurvis
With boom and lavaliere microphones, lighting equipment and cameras
in tow, film crews stepped in and transformed Providence St. Mel into
a live movie studio! They traveled down PSM hallways, shot footage
of classes in session and conducted interviews with teachers, alumni,
students and parents. Special emphasis was placed on capturing Principal
DiBella in action as she quickly moved from classroom to classroom checking in
to make sure teachers and students alike were accountable for their actions .
Through Mr. Hurvis’s perseverance and dedication, the film moved from mere
idea to a completed film that continues to garner praise and impress audiences.
The journey began in the Spring of 2009 by winning the Omaha Film Festival,
Seattle True Independence Film Festival and Lake County Film Festival.
The Providence Effect is scheduled to have a wider release in 2010.

An Appeal for Creating Inspired Lives
Although our tuition remains among the lowest of all
independent schools in Chicago, it is still much more than
what hundreds of our struggling families can afford.
The true cost to educate a student at Providence St. Mel is
more than double our modest tuition. Even though our school
automatically underwrites more than half of this true cost,
the great majority of our students require yet additional
financial aid.
Only through the assistance of such caring partners as you can
Providence St. Mel continue to keep tuition low, provide muchneeded scholarships, meet operating expenses, and offer vital
academic and enrichment programs.
Quite simply, instructing, guiding, and shaping the young lives
at our school would not be possible without your most generous
financial support. We invite you to use the enclosed self-addressed
envelope to give today to Providence St. Mel!
For more information on how you can help advance
academic excellence at Providence St. Mel School, please call
the Development Office at 773.722.7756 or visit our website at
www.psmnow.com.
Thank you for helping Providence St. Mel complete another
year of achievements and begin a new year — a new decade — of
creating inspired lives!

Mission Statement
At Providence St. Mel, we believe.
We believe in the creation of inspired
lives produced by the miracle of hard work.
We are not frightened by the challenges
of reality, but believe that we can change
our conception of this world and our
place within it. So we work, plan,
build, and dream – in that order.
We believe that one must earn the right
to dream. Our talent, discipline,
and integrity will be our contribution
to a new world. Because we believe that
we can take this place, this time, and this people,
and make a better place, a better time, and a better people.
With God’s help, we will either find a way or make one.
Thank You
For Making Another
Year of Excellence Possible!
