from The Director
Dear FIA members,
Happy New Year everyone. I hope
you were able to spend the holidays
with family and friends and that your
plans included a visit to see The Art of
Video Games, which is on view through
January 18th. This visual extravaganza
traces the increasing role of the artist
in the development of what is, by all
measures, one of the most popular
and influential art forms of the past half
century. Don’t miss it.
Looking forward to 2015, we will
begin the year with two exhibitions in
honor of National African American
History Month. The first is an exhibition
drawn from the FIA’s collection, by
photographer James Perry Walker,
featuring his years following and
documenting the work of an itinerate
preacher Reverend Louis Cole through
African American communities in rural
Mississippi and Tennessee. In this
series, his photographs are intuitively
narrative: joining a writer’s vocabulary
and a photographer’s vision to create
pictures that are extravagant in
their beauty and unaffected in their
simplicity. His camera wanders into
people’s lives as easily as a family
member entrusted with private,
personal moments. And, like all great
photographs, his have the irreducible
elements of seeming public and
familiar yet private and unique.
Also on view, and in collaboration
with two other Michigan museums,
the FIA will present Common Ground:
African American Art from the Flint
Institute of Arts, the Kalamazoo
Institute of Arts, and the Muskegon
Museum of Art. This exhibition, which
traces the aesthetic evolution of African
American art from the 19th century
to the present day, highlights the
strengths of all three collections. While
the museums in Flint, Kalamazoo,
and Muskegon have been actively
collecting works by African American
artists, this exhibition will be the first
time these works will be assembled
in one place. This unique occasion
allows our audiences the opportunity
to examine familiar works in a whole
new context while seeing others for the
first time. Collectively we are able to
demonstrate the compelling history of
African American art through works by
over 50 artists in a variety of mediums,
including painting, sculpture, and
works on paper.
Both exhibitions will be on view
during the 8th Annual Gala Celebration
which will be held on Saturday,
February 7th. Please plan to attend.
There is always a lot to see and do
at the FIA. I look forward to seeing you
here very soon.

Video Games as an Art Form

FIA Theater
(U.S., 2014) Directed by Jeremy
Snead, 105 min., not rated
Don’t miss your last chance to view The Art of
Video Games! This exciting exhibition explores
the 40-year history of video games and the
role artists play in gaming. The chronological
installation demonstrates the increasing role
artists have had in gaming from the very
beginning where artists were only involved in
designing supplemental materials to today where
artists are the key players in design, overseeing a
game from concept to final rendering.
The exhibition has 20 interactive kiosks
that analyze 80 groundbreaking video games
and 20 major at-home gaming consoles. In
addition, there are 5 playable games for visitors
to enjoy on larger-than-life screens: Pac Man,
Super Mario Bros., The Secret of Monkey Island,
Myst, and Flower. Be sure to check out original
character and landscape concept sketches and
interviews with gaming industry leaders.
The Art of Video Games is organized by the Smithsonian
American Art Museum with generous support from the
Entertainment Software Association Foundation; Sheila
Duignan and Mike Wilkins; Shelby and Frederick Gans;
Mark Lamia; Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk; Rose Family
Foundation; Betty and Lloyd Schermer; and Neil Young. The
C.F. Foundation in Atlanta supports the museum’s traveling
exhibition program, Treasures to Go.

Cutting It Close
The Art of Carving
through 2.22.15
Decorative Arts Gallery
Cutting It Close explores the art of carving from
prehistoric times to present day. This ancient
art form is one that has spread cross-culturally
and spanned across time. While many cultures
use similar media in carving, the end results are
drastically different. Explore this exhibition on
carving and get a glimpse into a multitude of
societies including our own. Art on view ranges
from stone and wood to more precious materials
including ivory, jade, and emerald. From the
ancient Maya and Egyptians through several
Chinese dynasties to African tribes still thriving
today, this exhibition explores carving from
around the world. Objects vary from those of
utility including, weaponry, cutlery, and writing
tools to sculptures created for aesthetic or
spiritual purposes.

The Circuitous Life of a Miniaturist
through 1.4.15
Graphics Gallery
In this reflective installation, artist Carl
Demeulenaere explores the development of
his art over the past 30 years. Demeulenaere
designed a maze-like room that takes the viewer
on a twisting and winding adventure. In the end,
viewers will end up back where they started,
paralleling Demeulenaere’s self-proclaimed
circuitous life as an artist working on a miniature
scale.
With over 120 works on view, Labyrinth
includes many styles and themes common in
Demeulenaere’s oeuvre. Highly influenced by
his personal experiences, Demeulenaere’s art
often deals with topics of religion, sexuality, and
global/cultural events.

James Perry Walker
The Preacher & His Congregation
1.17.15 – 4.4.15
Graphics Gallery
The photographs of James Perry Walker tap an
emotional key, giving witness to a deep faith.
Growing up in Marshall County, Mississippi in
the 1950s and 1960s, Walker witnessed life in
an isolated, impoverished, and rural community.
Following his graduation from college, he spent
the summer of 1967 working in Marshall County
as a teacher at Gatewood Baptist Church,
whose pastor was the Reverend Louis Cole.
One fall morning Walker attended a revival
service at Gatewood and experienced a sermon
unlike any he had heard before. He moved
away shortly afterward, but the memory of that
sermon stayed with him.
Nearly a decade later, Walker began a sixyear project to produce a photographic essay
about Reverend Cole and his congregation.
He spent countless hours with the preacher
at church and at his home. In addition, Walker
met with and photographed members of the
congregation, with whom he became friends.
This exhibition will also serve as a tribute to the
artist who passed away earlier this year.

The exhibition is divided into
thematic areas that give a broad
overview of the history of African
American art, showing its diversity
as well as its commonality.
Section one, Gaining Access,
spans from the 19th to the early
20th century, with artists such
as Joshua Johnson and Henry
Ossawa Tanner. Section two, New
Self-Awareness, focuses on the
early 20th century when many
African American artists began
to form their own artistic identity.
In the third and fourth sections
of the exhibition, Political and
Social Expressions and Examining
Identities, respectively, the works
deal with overcoming injustices
and gaining equality in the late
20th and into the 21st century.

In Ictu Oculi (in the blink of an eye) is concerned with the
experience of time. The work’s title, which alludes to the
brevity of human existence, is shared with a number of
vanitas paintings from the 17th century. A dinner table, laden
with plates of food and wine bottles, its chairs waiting to
be occupied, stands in a semi-mountainous landscape, a
breeze flickering its tablecloth. The table’s placement, in
the center of the frame alludes to the Last Supper. From
nowhere, vultures descend, bringing instability to the implied
order of the scene. The meal’s duration, and its strange
quietness lend it a human quality. The Birds act out a
travesty of human vanities—gluttony, selfish aggression, and
the coveting of what will quickly pass away.

Sackler Gift to the FIA
Since 2008, eight works from the
Arthur M. Sackler Foundation have
been on loan to the Flint Institute
of Arts. In 2014, these works were
generously donated to the museum by
the Foundation.
Arthur M. Sackler, M.D. (1913–
1987) established the Arthur M.
Sackler Foundation in 1965 to
make his extensive collections
(consisting mainly of the
arts of Asia) accessible to
scholars, students, and the
general public. Lending
art from its collection to
museums, the foundation
also organizes traveling
exhibitions and publishes
scholarly catalogues. An M.D.
by training, Sackler amassed
a fortune by gaining the rights
to import and sell Valium in
the United States. Sackler was
also a scholar and patron of the
arts, endowing galleries at the
Metropolitan Museum of Art and
Princeton University, the Arthur M.
Sackler Museum at Harvard University
in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the
Arthur M. Sackler Museum of Art and
Archaeology at Peking University in
Beijing, the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery
of the Smithsonian Institution, in
Washington, D.C., and the Jillian &
Arthur M. Sackler Wing at the Royal
Academy, London. He also established
a wide range of medical institutions
bearing his name.
The collection of eight objects
given to the FIA spans 3,600 years,
representing various mediums and
subjects and includes both Chinese
and European works. The earliest
objects come from Shang Dynasty
China (1600–1100 BCE), including

a taotie bronze mask with incised
designs and a double-owl vessel
(YOU) with lid. Other works from China
cover various dynasties such as the
Zhou Dynasty (ca. 1046–256 BCE)
with a bronze vessel (GUI) and the
Northern Wei Dynasty (4th–6th century)
with a ceramic figure of a warrior on
horseback. A monumental Buddha
head made of cast iron dates to the
Ming Dynasty (17th–19th century).
Lastly, the Foundation donated an
important 18th-century terracotta
portrait bust of Henri-Claude, Comte
d’Harcourt by French artist JeanBaptiste Lemoyne that was recently
featured in the About Face: Portraiture

Each year, the Flint Print Club commissions an
artist to produce a print to augment both the FIA’s
collection and the pursuit of personal collecting.
The Club is limited to 100 members in good
standing at the Family level or above. Flint Print
Club dues are $250 annually, which provides each
participating member with a selected print and
related programs.
The FIA is very
excited to announce that
April Gornik is the artist

For nearly 40 years, her

February 18 • 1:30p, Isabel Hall
The House Girl, the historical
fiction debut by Tara Conklin, is an
unforgettable story of love, history, and
a search for justice, set in modern-day
New York and 1852 Virginia. Weaving
together the story of an escaped
slave in the pre-Civil War South
and a determined junior lawyer, The
House Girl
follows Lina
Sparrow as
she looks for
an appropriate
lead plaintiff
in a lawsuit
seeking
compensation
for families of
slaves. In her
research, she
learns about
Lu Anne Bell, a renowned prewar
artist whose famous works might have
actually been painted by her slave,
Josephine.
Our first meeting will set the stage
by exploring African American art.
Two weeks later, we’ll meet to discuss
the novel. Books are available in the
Museum Shop.
Free to the public.

Calder’s Big Fish
February 21 • 1p–3p
Art School Studios
A wizard with wire, Alexander Calder
created mobiles, portraits, jewelry,
and even toys. Throughout his life,
Calder was inspired by and used the
solar system and nature as recurring
themes in his artwork. His signature
use of primary colors and balanced
simple shapes in motion make his
mobiles highly recognizable feats of
engineering. Calder’s fish mobiles glide
and sparkle in space catching light
and casting shadows. Using wire and
found objects, Youth Members will
draw, design and create a big fish of
their own.

Film Appreciation 101:
The Art of Hitchcock Join FIA Associate Curator of
Film Ed Bradley in a weekly look
at Alfred Hitchcock’s films, both
famous and obscure, as the
“Master of Suspense.” We’ll view
one movie per session in the FIA
Theater and discuss it in advance
and afterward.
This class provides students with the
opportunity to manipulate iconic imagery
from art history and reimagine recognizable
subject matter into new combinations. After
constructing a design for a painting using
Xeroxed imagery from art history, students
will paint over the collaged paper copies
and invent new versions of art made by
the “masters.” Imagine Degas’ ballerinas
set against Van Gogh’s Starry Night… the
range of possibilities combining unlikely
subjects and settings using acrylic paint
are endless!

Flint artist, Valorie J.
Horton began working
in ceramics in the
fall of 1995 at the
FIA Art School. She
states “clay has now
become a part of who
I am. The one-on-one
involvement with clay
gives me endless challenges.
Throughout my many years of
creating art, I have tried to define
my potter’s voice, my integrity, my
honor, and my life’s passion.”
Horton is a graduate of Central
Michigan University with a MA in
Management of Human Resources.
She worked for General Motors for
30 years where she spent most of her
career as a manager of Skilled Trades
and Quality.
“That path between the technical
reality and the imagination of my
spiritual self is the language that
I choose to express in clay. In my
work I am driven to embellish, incise,
and manipulate the forms. I enjoy
manipulating the viewer’s eye to
explore subtle changes and repetitive
patterns within my work. You will see
technical aspects included in function
and utility in my work. I believe to be

successful, my work must awaken the
viewer’s response to look beyond the
surface of the object. Through clay I
search for a direct link to the soul.”
Horton served two six-year terms
on the Flint Institute of Arts Board
of Trustees, she now works as the
Coordinator for the Visitor Services
Department at the FIA. Horton is very
active in the Flint community serving
on numerous boards, The Chosen
Few Arts Council, and the Friends
of Berston Field House. She is also
a past board member of The New
McCree Theater and The Pierians Inc.
Horton has exhibited before in the
Art Sales and Rental Gallery at the FIA,
and the Greater Flint Arts Council.
The round trip motorcoach will
depart from the FIA at 10:00a and

bookworm… and proud of it
The hustle and bustle of the
holiday season is over and
winter is fiercely upon us.
What better way to spend
a cold, dreary day than
curled up with a good book?
Whether your passion for
books involves reading them,
writing them, doodling in
them, or just being inspired
by looking at the pictures,
the Museum Shop has a
large selection of titles that
are sure to be the perfect
winter companion.
Mission: to advance the understanding
and appreciation of art for all through
collections, exhibitions, and educational
programs.
The FIA Art School offers fall, winter and

among the classes offered. Non-members
may call to receive a class brochure at

Members always receive a 10% discount
on Museum Shop purchases.
