A DAy in the Life The Philadelphia Protestant Home annual report 2014 Life A day in the Along the main street corridor, residents can be seen banking, shopping for food or gifts, mailing letters, and shipping packages to friends and loved ones. Some are using the computers provided to explore the internet, or just have fun. Others venture upstairs for an appointment with a hairdresser or a visit to the library. Every life is different. Some residents enjoy days that are very busy, while others are content with a more casual approach. Our goal is to offer choices and provide support, enabling each resident to define and live their lives as they prefer, on their terms. PP A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO Ph is a senior living community that is also a part of the larger Lawndale community. It has been serving seniors for 124 years, more than 45,000 days, and every hour of every one of those days. Nursing and security staff are on duty throughout the night, watching over the campus and ready to address any need or problem that may arise. At the break of dawn, they are joined by the various support services and office staff, all dedicated to meeting the needs of those we serve. As the day unfolds, residents and staff go about their business—“good mornings” and “hellos” abound—our motto, “we’re family” is clearly evident. Along the main street corridor, residents can be seen banking, shopping for food or gifts, mailing letters, and shipping packages to friends and loved ones. Some are using the computers provided to explore the internet, or just have fun. Others venture upstairs for an appointment with a hairdresser or a visit to the library. Resident and community volunteers (over 200 total) tend to their duties, offering tremendous support to staff in many areas of PPh. Residents (plus staff and neighbors) come and go at the Wellness Center and heated pool, while the Therapy and Rehabilitation Department works with those in need of physical, occupational or speech therapy. “Our goal is to offer choices and provide support…” Best wishes always, Anthony L. Manzo, President and CEO Home to nearly 600 residents, the PPh community is also a major employer in Northeast Philadelphia, with over 500 full and part time staff members. It is a neighborhood landmark, a rather complex “business” with an operating budget of $30 million, and a strong advocate for issues that affect not only PPh seniors, but also those throughout Pennsylvania and the entire nation. Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and Veterans benefits—these are all essential and must be preserved. PPh is also a ministry. Christian principles still guide us on our journey and inclusiveness is embraced, with many faiths and denominations represented. Worship services are numerous and varied, truly a vital part of daily life at PPh; it has been that way throughout our long history. Every life is different. Some residents enjoy days that are very busy, while others are content with a more casual approach. Our goal is to offer choices and provide support, enabling each resident to define and live their lives as they prefer, on their terms. We continue to strive to improve upon that model. Guided by our Christian heritage and commitment to excellence, we share our knowledge and experience with other organizations and advocate for the highest quality of life for all. 1 Life… Message from the Chairperson of the Board A Day in the VV olunteerism comes in three forms…time, talent and financial. At PPh, when we look for Board Members, we look for all three. As Chair of the Board I would like to share my observations with you of “a day in the life…” Typically when coming to a Board meeting, my first contact is the security guard at the front gate. Always helpful, he points me in the right direction. Upon entering, I find a gracious greeting behind the front desk. From there, my first observation is of the volunteers in the gift shop who are busy with customers. If it is Thursday, I run into the “pretzel man” with his pretzel glasses and friendly greeting. When the Board meets, we have resident volunteers who observe and participate in the meeting. Before the meeting, we have a social hour where Board members and residents interact over snacks and sodas. I am always amazed at the positive attitudes of our residents. “Volunteerism comes in three forms…time, talent and financial. Sometimes the Board will take a tour to see newly remodeled areas or take a tour of the kitchen to see the intricate process of feeding hundreds of people each day. I marvel at the dedication of our staff and the many volunteer hours that they cheerfully add to their busy schedules. It always amazes me how the residents and staff all greet each other by name. I think the dedication of residents and staff is reflected in the Board members as well. We all give of our time and talents and once again, we had 100% representation financially as well. As we begin our 125th year, I look forward to continuing our commitment to PPh. It also acknowledges those who have given to PPh for ten consecutive years or more. The Society is named for Elizabeth Bergdoll who bequeathed $15,000 to our Home in 1898. This money was used to purchase the land that PPh occupies today! Bergdoll The society The 2014 members of The Elizabeth Bergdoll Society were recognized at a dinner in their honor on May 21, 2015. St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church was the recipient of the 2014 Bergdoll Society award. Their leadership has been dedicated and committed to our success for as many years as we’ve been serving seniors by serving on the Board of Directors, ministering to their congregants who reside here and by generously donating their time and treasure. We were recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of the best nursing homes in the country, and continue to receive a five-star rating from CMS. PPh measures its success in terms of what it is contributing to the local community on an annual basis. A not-for-profit organization provides services of benefit to the public without financial incentive. The Good we do The Philadelphia Protestant Home works with others toward the well-being of the community by: z P roviding housing and services for over 600 residents and many members of the community. z P roviding affordable housing to more than 40 low income residents of the community. z z z z We take account of: 3. Makes charitable contributions to local community organizations, for example, the Lawncest 4th of July celebration and the Second District Police Advisory Council. z P roviding 5,503 meals through NE Meals on Wheels to seniors in our community. z ffering fitness and O aquatics programs to seniors in the community. PPh is a site for Independent Blue Cross’ Silver Sneakers program. 1. Resources provided to improve and enhance life in the surrounding community of Northeast Philadelphia and beyond. 2. Economic impact that our presence has on our community. Providing home and community-based services through the Bridge to Care program to seniors who wish to remain in their homes. z Providing space for meetings and events free of charge to 13 community, church, school, and civic organizations. z P roviding local, state, and national leadership in the interests of seniors and taking an active role in advocating for senior issues. z articipating as active P members in local community and business associations and service project events. z A ssisting hundreds of seniors regain maximum independence during their stay in Pathways Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, enabling them to return to their own homes. z Offering respite and dementia care as part of its Personal Care program. z B eing a training site for medical students, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, special education students, area high school students, and other future health care professionals. Providing internships in Recreational Therapy. z P romoting volunteerism to its residents, staff, and members of the community.
