A new day!
Alfond Center for Health opens November 9
fa l l 2 0 1 3
Raising the bar: All new, just for you!
Message from the CEO
A new day is coming!
As the November 9 date for the move
to the new Alfond Center for Health
approaches, the level of energy
among staff and the many local
public safety organizations involved
in planning the move (ambulance
services, local police, state police, the
Maine Department of Transportation)
is high as we work together to ensure
a safe transfer of patients.
The camaraderie and teamwork
demonstrated throughout the
past several years of design and
construction has brought us to this
day, this one moment in time, when
the remarkable new services and
capabilities of the Alfond Center for
Health truly become reality for all
residents and visitors to the Kennebec
Valley. Our goal is to make the
transition as comfortable as possible
for patients and their families and
as seamless as possible for all our
communities. On the last page of
this issue you will find a move day
schedule that provides important
details you should know about
the move day and the weekend of
November 9.
HealthMatters is published as a service for
the people of the Kennebec Valley region.

Speaking of weekend excitement,
in this issue we share some stories,
comments and photos from the
Alfond Center for Health Dedication
Weekend events enjoyed by
more than 12,000 residents of our
communities in late September. The
weather was spectacular, the turnout
stunning and the energy and pride off
the charts. My only wish is that Harold
Alfond could have been with us on
those days to see his original vision
fulfilled.
We are both humbled and honored
by the generosity of the Alfond
family and all the donors who gave
generously to bring state-of-the-art
health care to our communities in the
shape of this beautiful new medical
center. Built with pride by Maine
people for the people of Maine, it is
now our mission to breathe life into
this new building by providing the
highest level of compassionate care,
healing and wellness represented
in every design feature of our new
campus.

Two-story windows flood light into the
Welcome Center, which sets the stage
for the soaring views of nature and
light-filled spaces found throughout
the 640,000-square-foot facility. Interior
courtyards and skylights also bring
daylight inside.
Outpatient lab, diagnostic imaging
with a dedicated entrance and space
for women, primary and specialty
physician offices and a grab-and-go
café are all located off Main Street.
At the end, furthest from the noise,
are the inpatient wings.
Main Street is one of two main paths of
travel, and is designed to be the primary
path of travel for outpatients and
visitors. The back corridor is intended for
staff and patient transports. The goal is
to protect patient privacy at their most
vulnerable times.
If you turn right at the Welcome Center,
you’ll arrive at the 300-seat Prescott
Education Pavilion complete with
demonstration teaching kitchen.
Working with architects gave
MaineGeneral staff a rare opportunity
to rethink everything from grouping
related services together to finding
ways to streamline processes to reduce
Services in the new hospital are
organized much more intuitively
making for more efficient patient flow.
For example, pre-surgical testing area is
located directly across from surgeons’
office practice space and is also on
the same floor as surgical services.
Maternity and Pediatrics is on the
second floor, readily accessible to the
ORs if a C-section is needed. From the
Emergency Department, the Mental
Health and Substance Abuse inpatient
unit is a direct elevator ride away.
Consistency in room layout is safer
for patients and more efficient for
staff. Patient floors have 36 rooms
organizated into three, 12-room
neighborhoods, each with its own
nurses’ station, dictation, supply and
medication areas. Shorter distances to
travel mean more time with patients.

We’re ready!
When the doors open Nov. 9 and the
first patients arrive, staff will be ready.
Training on everything from how
to work the new beds and monitors,
to the nurse call system, and to all the
new technology and equipment to
navigating in the new space got under
way in August and will take nine weeks
to complete.
In all, MaineGeneral invested
$1.2 million to train more than
1,700 employees.
“We put a lot of time, effort and money
into training to make sure everyone
is ready from day one,” says Rochelle
Findlay, administrative director of
Clinical Education and Practice, who
heads the training program.
In addition to the daily on-site,
hands-on training, all departments
came together for two full days of dress
rehearsals where they practiced
real-life medical scenarios to make sure
everything and everyone functions
seamlessly.
After the first full “day in the life”
in September, a follow-up to test
adjustments that were made, took
place in October.
Patients the focus of care
While many area residents were
wowed by MaineGeneral’s new Alfond
Center for Health at the open house in
September, for Sherri Woodward, senior
vice president of patient services and
chief nurse executive, it’s not about the
building, it’s about the care.
“We’re focusing on what’s new and
different. We don’t need to teach staff
clinical skills—those they have—but
we need to teach them all the new
technology, equipment and workflows
that are different here,” Findlay explains.
“As beautiful as this new hospital is, the
most important thing about it is what it
allows us to do to help our patients and
their families. It gives us an environment
and the tools that allow us to do our
very best work, to focus on the patient,”
she says.
To inject fun while learning,
departments organized scavenger
hunts.
“Each department determined the
important things their staff need to be
able to locate, places they need to find
regularly and built those into scavenger
hunts. It helps staff become familiar
with the building and areas they will
commonly go to,” Findlay explains.
▲ Trainer Jeanne Pelletier, RN,
demonstrates how the new lifts in
diagnostic imaging will work with
colleague John Weinberg playing the role
of a wheelchair-bound patient and Angel
St. Pierre assisting. “Training is going
great; we’re having lots of fun. Absolutely
we will be ready. We can’t wait to open
and settle in,” Pelletier says.
While training varies by department,
all staff is trained in:
• Orientation to the building and
their specific areas;
• Basic office equipment; and
• Emergency preparedness to familiarize everyone with the roles they play for every emergency code.
Vital Sign Monitor
The all private rooms include sleep sofas
so family members can stay right in
the room. They also allow patients to
talk to their caregivers without being
overheard and allow patients to get
better rest.
Although the environment is key,
Woodward is quick to point out culture
changes that have been going on
behind the scenes at MaineGeneral for
several years.

“As we’ve been building a new hospital,
we’ve been hard at work to change
our culture to become an organization
that puts our patients and families at
the center of all we do and to provide
excellent care, every patient, every time.
What that means is that we are
dedicated to listening carefully, to
partnering with our patients and
families to exceed their expectations.”
Ultimately that will be how success is
measured; treating patients and families
the way they want to be treated, the
way we want our own families treated.

To train such a large group of people,
Findlay took a collaborative approach.
“Leadership identified lead trainers for
each department, who in turn selected
super users who train everyone in their
department. We had more than 240 lead
trainers and super users. Much of the
training materials are standardized and
will be used going forward to train new
employees.
The length of training varied by
department, depending on what was
new, but ranged from a few hours to
three days. Most of the new technology
learning comes near the end, closer to
the time it will be used, Findlay explains.
▲
Findlay says the training went
unbelievably well. “I couldn’t be more
pleased. We’re hearing nothing but
positive things. The lead trainers and
super users took their responsibilities
very seriously and they’re doing a
great job.”

Patient Room
Part of that is having the space to
allow families to spend as much time
as possible with patients. “We know
patients do better when they are
surrounded by loved ones.”
Departments got together for two full days
of “dress rehearsals” using volunteers as
patients and running through several
real-life scenarios.

Advanced care for babies
close to home
Offering a safe, healing environment
New Mental Health & Substance Abuse unit
A large skylight floods natural light
into the dayroom of MaineGeneral’s
new inpatient Mental Health and
Substance Abuse unit. As the
multipurpose area where patients
will dine, receive group therapy,
participate in activities and visit with
family members, it’s important that it
feels like home, says Shelly King, nurse
manager of the unit.
MaineGeneral welcomes a new
addition to its family of maternity and
pediatric care.
For Kennebec Valley residents, advanced
neonatal care will now be close to home
with the opening of the new Level II
neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
Staffed by a team of specially trained
doctors and nurses, the NICU at the
new hospital is unique to the region.
It will care for babies born prematurely
(34 weeks or more), having low birth
weight or requiring advanced care. This
new service offers advanced technology,
such as ventilators for babies and special
beds to regulate body temperature.
Abundant natural light and warm,
restful colors are only a few of the
many details that went into the
design of the 30-bed, all private room
inpatient unit.
“For the first time, moms who go into
labor early can stay close to home
and have their babies locally,” explains
Annette Bowman, director of Maternity
“We offer expertise and a watchful eye for our youngest
patients, which both parents and medical staff are grateful for.
Most moms and babies can now be cared for close to home.”
& Pediatrics. She estimates that last
year 34 babies and 30 moms had to
be transferred to Portland or Bangor.
“Families won’t have to travel to receive
care we will be able to provide. The
stress of transportation and separation
will be less of a burden. We are thrilled
to be expanding our scope of care. It’s
the right thing to do for patients and
families.”
“It’s exciting to be able to work with a
brand new service line in the hospital,”
says Gabrielle Harpell, MD, lead pediatric
hospitalist. “We’re putting together many
different types of care, including physical
and occupational therapy, food and
nutrition and respiratory therapy, and
we’re all working together on this new
service to provide our babies with the
very best hospital care.”
Supporting the Level II NICU and care
of children throughout MaineGeneral
is a team of four pediatric hospitalists.
A pediatrician specially trained to take
care of children in the hospital will be
available 24 hours a day, seven days
a week, to care for babies in the
Level II NICU and children up to
age 18 throughout the hospital.
In addition to caring for babies, Harpell,
along with Rosie Davis, MD, Kelsey
Walton, MD and Clota Snow, MD, consult
with Emergency Department staff as
needed and support medical staff in the
community. MaineGeneral will continue
to partner with the Barbara Bush
Children’s Hospital in Portland to provide
care for children with more serious needs

such as heart problems and cancer.
“We’re a resource for the system,” says
Harpell of her team. “We offer expertise
and a watchful eye for our youngest
patients, which both parents and medical
staff are grateful for. Most moms and
babies can now be cared for close to
home. If they do need to go to Portland,
they can come back to MaineGeneral
sooner. Improving our scope of pediatric
care is definitely a win-win for the littlest
members of our community.”
Natural light extends to patient rooms
where large windows frame views of
nature. Instead of security screens,
unbreakable glass provides the same
safety feature without blocking the
view or the light. “First and foremost,
we want to provide a very safe,
yet warm, welcoming and patientcentered space for our patients,”
explains Marc Sirois, administrative
director of Mental Health and
Substance Abuse Services.
“In our world, the treatment is the
environment so it is very important
that we offer a therapeutic, healing
environment. It’s what our patients
need,” King adds.
The design was a collaborative effort
over several years. “When we sat down
with the architects and designers,
we had a very comprehensive list of
suggestions and recommendations
we collected from our patients, visitors
and staff. Everyone was engaged
in the process with patients at the
center,” Sirois recalls.
The staff also toured recently
renovated psychiatric inpatient units
at other Maine hospitals to learn what
worked well and what didn’t.
Everything, from the plumbing
and other bathroom fixtures, lights,
outlets, hardware and furnishings
was specially selected to significantly
reduce the risk of patient self-harm.
The unit includes an exercise room
where patients can work out. “That
was a specific patient request,” says
King. “We’ll have exercise equipment
and mats for floor exercises and yoga.”
“In our world, the treatment
is the environment so it is
very important that we offer a
therapeutic, healing environment.
It’s what our patients need.”
Another unique design feature is a
comfort room, where patients who
need or want quiet time can listen
to soothing music or watch a video.
Patients can also select and adjust
colored lights to change the room’s
ambiance.

Healing for patients and families
When the new 20-bed Physical
Rehabilitation Unit opens at the Alfond
Center for Health, patients will have
access to all the latest technology and
comfort measures to help them regain
independence after an amputation,
stroke, hip fracture, or brain or spinal
cord injury.
Outside, they will also have access to
a beautiful rehabilitation garden.
The rehabilitation garden is part of
the extensive Healing Gardens that
surround the new hospital. Walking
trails that wind around the building
complete the ready access to nature.
The same scenes of nature are framed
in the soaring windows throughout the
hospital.
To Mary Melville, administrative director
of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation,
the outdoor space for physical and
occupational therapy is one of the items
near the top of the “wish list” she has
compiled during the more than 35 years
she’s been at MaineGeneral.
Outdoor spaces:
8 HealthMatters
“When I think of all the things we wished
we could do to improve patients’ and
families’ experiences and help get them
back home comfortably and safely, it’s
really exciting they are a reality in the
new hospital,” says Melville, a physical
therapist by training.
“When I was a clinician I remember thinking, ‘If
we could just get these patients outside to breathe
fresh air, smell the cut grass, feel the heat of the
sunshine and the breeze on their faces, they would
do so much better.”
Mary Melville
For her, the garden is key. “Our patients
are often with us longer than an
average hospitalization so being able
to get outside is very important. When
I was a clinician I remember thinking, ‘If
we could just get these patients outside
to breathe fresh air, smell the cut grass,
feel the heat of the sunshine and the
breeze on their faces, they would do so
much better.’”
Overlooking an outdoor fountain, the
rehabilitation garden has different
surfaces including tar, gravel and grass
for patients to practice walking on. The
space will include a seasonal garden
patients will plant and tend as part of
their therapy. Often when patients are
gardening they often don’t even realize
they’re doing therapy, Melville says.
respite and reflection, is found in the
Healing Gardens. Possible in large
part because of the generosity of
well-known philanthropists William and
Elsie Viles, the gardens contain pavers
and bricks that reflect the support of
the people of the communities of the
Kennebec Valley.
The two miles of walking trails that
surround the hospital are named the
Hayden Trails, that acknowledges Lewis
Hayden, who donated part of the
160-acre site now home to the hospital
and the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer
Care. The trails are linked to the cancer
center gardens and paths.

MaineGeneral dedicates the Alfond Center for Health
They came to celebrate what their
generous financial gifts helped build.
They came as proud employees,
eager to show family members and
friends the future of health care in the
Kennebec Valley.
They came as area residents, excited
to see their new hospital.
They came in infant carriers, by foot
or pushed in wheelchairs — a sea of
humanity with broad smiles and wide
eyes.
But, most of all, they came, some
12,000 strong, as MaineGeneral
opened the doors of its brilliant,
spacious and thoughtfully designed
$312 million hospital for a glimpse of
what an extraordinary collaboration
of talents, determination and
perseverance can accomplish.
The first patients at the Alfond Center
for Health won’t arrive until
Nov. 9, but visitors of all ages and
backgrounds took time during a

and grounds of a state-of-the-art
health care facility designed and built

Building
A key feature of the Alfond Center for
Health is easy access to the services you
need the most.
That’s why you’ll find many primary care
and specialty care offices (like family
medicine and surgery) close to the
medical center entrance.
The Scott B. Bullock Medical Office
Building of the Alfond Center for Health
houses many of these practices so that
you can see your medical staff and get
follow-up care all at the same place.
Additionally, many of the radiology
testing and lab services are located
across the hall from the medical office
building. This means you can go to one
place for many of your health needs.
We plan to offer this same attention to
convenience and access at the Thayer
Center for Health.
While careful attention was made
to give you the highest level of
convenience, we also know that many of
our patients come from outside Augusta
or Waterville. The offices you rely on in
your community will stay there, closest
to you.

The best in patient care is at the heart of our new location.
Art: Inspired by nature,
made in Maine
The art collection, from the three
commissioned pieces, to the more than
200 paintings, photographs, collages
and sculptures all have one thing in
common—they’re all by Maine artists.

While all very different, from the
conceptualization to the materials used
and methods of construction, artists
Lauren Fensterstock, Matt Hutton and
Jim Creighton — the three artists whose
works were commissioned specially for
the hospital — share a commonality: all
drew creative inspiration from nature.
Jim Creighton’s silver leaf tree is based
on a Ukranian crabapple tree in the Viles
Arboretum in Augusta, near his studio
in Gardiner. Pressed between two
pieces of glass, his goal was to evoke
a sense of biology — preserving a
“sample” like a slide for studying under a
microscope. Located outside the critical
care unit, Creighton says it “contributes
to a feeling of a healing environment.”
He loves the idea that everybody will
get to see his piece, not just gallery
goers, which, he says is typically what
happens to pieces of art. “It’s not too
avant garde so everyone can relate to
it. That’s the intention.”
Portland artist Fensterstock ‘s “Garden
Path” on display outside the Maternity &
Pediatrics Unit, is a series of five framed
pieces, spanning a 30-foot space. It
depicts more than a dozen plants and
flowers painstakingly created with
thousands of hand-cut pieces of paper
assembled with tweezers, toothpicks
and a lot of glue.
Fensterstock, who has spent a lot of
time in hospitals, says, “I think it’s an
important space, a hopeful space and
one in which people can reflect about
what’s most important in their lives.
I hope my work is calming and peaceful
for patients and their families.”
Hutton, an artist who works solely with
wood, is an associate professor at the
Maine College of Art in Portland and
chair of its Woodworking & Furniture
Design Program.
He said he was moved to create a
functional sculpture for a facility
designed down to the smallest of
details as a place of healing enhanced
by its natural environment.
Hutton says his excitement about the
project grew when he learned his art
would be installed in the hospital’s
Spiritual Center. His finished product
has a 12-foot long tabletop crafted
from catalpa, with a white collection
container underneath through which
prayers or thoughts can be left.

New Healthy Living Resource Center
wants your input!
In early 2014 MaineGeneral Health will launch the Healthy Living
Resource Center, a new program designed to support and promote
healthy living and healing within our communities. Generously funded
by the Peter Alfond Foundation, the Healthy Living Resource Center
program will offer patients, families, employees and our community
tools and opportunities to enhance physical well-being through healthy
cooking, healthy eating and physical movement. The program also offers
a focus on social, emotional, spiritual and environmental well-being
through programs that reduce stress and anxiety and promote mindful
living. We would like to hear from you as we develop this program.
▲
Healthy eating demonstrations/
classes put on by our chefs
will take place regularly in our
teaching kitchen, located in the
Prescott Education Pavilion next
to the lobby.
To provide input, please complete a short survey at
www.surveymonkey.com/s/HLRC or contact Joy Osterhout,
program leader, at [email protected].
You can also call 207-861-5255.

November 9
MOVE DAYcoming!!!
Saturday, November 9th, is a
significant day on everyone’s
calendar at MaineGeneral as we
finalize all details and planning
for moving our patients into the
new Alfond Center for Health in
North Augusta.
In the midst of all the excitement
and anticipation, the first priority
for every team member is patient
safety! As a result, the move
schedule is designed to ensure
that in-hospital patients are our
primary focus as we transfer them
from both Thayer in Waterville
and the old hospital campus at 6
East Chestnut Street in Augusta
to the new Alfond Center for
Health in north Augusta. Our
team has worked closely with
ambulance services (Delta and
EMS), State Police, local police
and the Maine Department
of Transportation to ensure a
smooth transition. We deeply
appreciate their support.
Please note that on the weekend
of November 9th, there will be
some important changes to our
services that you need to know:
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 9
• The Augusta Campus at 6 East Chestnut Street will close its Emergency
Department at 6 a.m. and will open the Emergency Department at the Alfond
Center for Health at 35 Medical Center Parkway, Augusta at 6 a.m.
