WELCOME TO RAUE
CENTER FOR THE ARTS
2014/2015 SEASON!
H
ere at Raue Center For The Arts we are
champions of the stories our artists tell on
stage. We want to celebrate, entertain, provoke
and illuminate; To create a space where you, our
patrons, can go from sidesplitting laughter one
moment to pin-drop silence the next. We make
live theatre happen because we believe it can do
something no other art form can. It can create
communal joy, make emotional exploration a
shared experience and offer intellectual insights accessible to all. All from the strange and
elusive electricity that flows between the stage and the audience.
Live theatre for us is about community and family. Every family has its strong personalities,
its outliers, its innovators and eccentrics. This season we’ve assembled an amazing
collection of people we can’t wait for you to meet. So join us as we venture across the
world, through shifting realities and dance through our history and into our future without
ever leaving the raw, human and darkly illuminated stage.
We hope to see you all at the theatre soon.
Warm regards,
Richard Kuranda
Executive Director, Raue Center For The Arts
Artistic Director, Williams Street Repertory

History of Raue
Nostalgia and Technology Bring Theatre Back to Life
O
pened in 1929 as El Tovar, this
theatre was a welcome addition
to northern Illinois as it showcased
the thrilling new “talkies” movies as
well as vaudeville troupers including
Gene Autry and George Goebel who
wheeled into town on the weekends.
During the 1960s, area theatre groups
performed between film showings.
Home to the movies for most of its life, El Tovar eventually became The Lake,
and then the downtown Showplace. It was finishing its days as a shabby art
house with a sprinkling of viewers. The stage had become unsafe, the basement
dressing rooms were crumbling, the theatre’s walls were flaking, and the ceiling
was leaking, but fond memories of those who had loved the theatre still imbued
the air. The genteel old girl was about to experience a renaissance.
Lucile Raue, who had lived and worked most of her life in
a four-square-block area in downtown Crystal Lake, had
left a generous gift for the improvement of her beloved
home town. Along with the executor, an advisory group
of local citizens directed a gift from the Raue Family Estate
to the Crystal Lake Civic Center Authority. It included an
outright gift to buy the building, $1 million for renovation,
and $500,000 in matching incentives. Now named for its
shy benefactor, Raue Center’s new board of directors and staff would guide it
through construction, staffing and planning to renovate it into a first-class venue
for the visual and performing arts. With Charles River Development Corporation
of Crystal Lake as the general contractor, ground was broken in November 1999,
and the old stage house was demolished. In August of 2001, the grand dame
emerged as state-of-the art Raue Center For The Arts.
Amongst the early advisors was Bill Dwyer,
who became the theatre’s first Board
President. National mainstage acts were
brought to the Raue Center, including Bill
Cosby, Penn & Teller, Wynton Marsalis,
Bob Newhart, Lily Tomlin and many other
Tony, Academy, Emmy and Grammy award
winning artists. Raue Center also continued
8
Center for the Arts
the tradition of
rentals to local
choir, music and
dance groups – truly
making the space
the community’s
own theatre.
As Raue Center has grown, it has faced changing circumstances and challenges,
forcing it to rebuild and renovate its’ programming. Due to the recession,
lower-cost programs like Lucy’s Comedy Café and Williams Street Repertory
(WSR) – Raue Center’s in-residence theatre company – have been launched.
Lucy’s Comedy Café has become a sellout series, and among WSR’s countless
productions was Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street that opened
the 2013-14 season and won four Broadway World Chicago awards.
In 2011, the need for an environment to further the patron’s and artist’s
experience and to develop audience relations with the artists and fellow artsupporters was identified. A private family foundation donated the funds to
build a full service bar while other donors rallied to help with the amenities.
This new space, named 26 North, has become home to events like our tasting
series, the on-going Raue Salon, opening night parties with the cast of WSR,
as well as being open prior to, and after, each performance for the enjoyment
of our patrons.
This one-of-a-kind theatre has been serving the community as a premiere
entertainment venue since 1929. The dreams of its founders and those who
worked painstakingly to restore it to its original grandeur still ring true, and the
commitment of all to keep
the memories alive while
bringing in state-of-theart technology has been a
proven success. We hope you
continue to support the Raue,
and encourage you to check
out our permanent history
display - it’s our way of trying
to keep the memories alive for
generations to come.

Tickets start at $22
“Patti is simply marvelous” – Lewis Black
“The funniest woman in comedy since Carol Burnett” – Bill Maher
For some reason being a mother of two with a “stay at home Dad” (which sounds
so much better than “unemployed husband”) while living with her parents is a great
motivator for Patti to just get out of the house.
Patti Vasquez is a Lipstick Mom. She believes that being a wife and mother doesn’t
prevent you from feeling attractive. It says something when you can still feel good even
if you’ve spent the day doing laundry and washing sippy cups.
Patti has appeared in many comedy festivals including Just For Laughs, HBO’s Las Vegas
Comedy Festival, the Chicago Comedy Festival and Marshall’s Women in Comedy
Festival in New York City.
On television Patti has appeared on the VERY FUNNY SHOW on TBS and COMEDY.
TV along with regular appearances on the wildly popular BOB & TOM TV Show on
Superstation WGN and their daily morning radio show syndicated in 139 cities across the

Corky Siegel’s
Traveling Chamber Blues
featuring Sons of
the Never Wrong and Michael Miles
October 25 @ 8p
Tickets start at $32
“A significant step forward
into new dimensions
of feeling, content,
and technique…It is a
classification-shattering
mix” – Jazziz Magazine
Long-time Chicago Blues harp
legend Corky Siegel, his Red Hot
Chamber Blues join with Sons of
the Never Wrong and banjo virtuoso Michael Miles.
A trifecta of Chicago powerhouses come together
on Raue Center’s stage promises to break musical
and cultural boundaries in no uncertain terms. Siegel
has arranged for a program that melds his reverent
re-imagining of the blues for which he’s become so well known over the course of a
career that has spanned five decades (and counting). Collaborators include The Sons
of the Never Wrong whose vocal blend sounds like no other; their original songs have
wit & heart; their onstage dynamic is nothing short of manic. They are joined by the
compatible iconoclastic talents of Michael Miles who far exceeds the limits of what
was thought possible on claw-hammer banjo. The October 25th event, an mélange
of blues, classical, folk, pop and world music, starts at 8 PM and is billed as “a stellar
night of extraordinary musical fireworks.” None of the principals has any doubt that
the evening will live up to its billing.

Mad Theatre Works Presents
Wings of Courage
November 5 @ 12:15p
Tickets start at $6
Wings of Courage is an original play with music by Mad River Theater Works based
on the life of Eugene Bullard, the first African-American combat pilot and adventurer.
Bullard’s story would be unbelievable if it were not all true.
Who was this remarkable African-American? Born in Columbus, Georgia, Bullard
traveled the world. He joined the French Foreign Legion after being denied a
meaningful place in the United States Army. He rose through the ranks and flew
against the famous “Red Baron” as a part of the famous Lafayette Escadrille during
World War I. But when the Escadrille was incorporated into the new U.S. Army
Air Corps in 1917, the color of Bullard’s skin prevented him from taking his place
alongside the other American heroes of his day. But that didn’t stop him. He went
on to fame as a bandleader in Paris in 1920’s. Using storytelling, music, and drama,
Wings of Courage shows how Bullard’s determination and perseverance helped him to
overcome discrimination throughout his remarkable life. It is an uplifting tale of vision
and hope that deserves to be known by every American.

Voices In Harmony
present
Sing-Along Messiah
December 14 @ 4p
Tickets are $18 or $15
The community and the Voices in Harmony choir join their voices in harmony with
Handel’s great masterwork. It is present with a 25-piece orchestra, excellent soloists,
and projections of beautiful calligraphy by Timothy Botts. The McHenry County Choir
Chorus will supplement the on-stage choir. Truly this is one of the most beautiful
community-based performances; it is among the most meaningful holiday traditions.
Handel’s Messiah is often regarded as one of the most inspiring masterworks
generated by the great baroque composers. Although Handel had arguably never
intended his grand piece to never be performed on such a large scale, it was
performed with large choral and ensembles almost immediately upon its publication,
a tradition that continues on today. The tradition of singing Handel’s Messiah is a
beloved English and American past time that resonates with so many, calling them
back to childhood, or returning them to a place of peace in their own hearts.

The Nutcracker Ballet
with Berkshire Ballet Theatre
December 20 @ 3p & 7p
December 21 @ 3p
Tickets start at $27
Hear Tchaikovsky’s unforgettable music. Witness emotional dancing. See the
lavish costumes when The Nutcracker Ballet comes to the Raue Center’s stage.
This incredible production is brought to you in conjunction with The Berkshire
Ballet Theatre.
Based on the story of E.T.A. Hoffman The Nutcracker Ballet has come to be nearly
synonymous with Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece. And rightfully so, as it takes Hoffman’s
story and transports it to a new medium in which the fantastic happenings in the
Nutcracker are given a magical dreamscape where a child’s imagination makes dolls
come alive and candy dance.
The Berkshire Ballet Theatre, located in Crystal Lake, has worked in conjunction with
Raue Center for the Arts for years bringing talented and profession works to the
stage. Their mission is to create a professional performance environment that the
Berkshire Ballet Theatre and apprentices, trainees, and company dancers can use to
gain experience, artistry, education, and a love of the arts.

NEW YEAR’S EVE
COMEDY SHOW
STARRING STEVE COCHRAN
with JOHN DACOSSE,
PAT TOMASULO and
ANA BELAVAL
December 31 @ 7p
Tickets start at $52
Wouldn’t it be great if there were a NYE show you could see and still be home falling
asleep by 11... just like every year?
Good news...there is...because Steve Cochran and guests will be very funny (and done
by 10pm). Yes, the best in stand up comedy on stage means you will have a great
time saying goodbye to 2014 at the Raue Center.
About Steve Cochran:
Steve Cochran likes getting up early. Actually, no one likes getting up at 330am but
when you love your job it’s a lot easier. Each morning Steve leads a family of great
talents to inform and entertain on the #1 talk show in Chicago.
The schedule makes stand up comedy difficult so if Steve lays down and takes a quick
nap on stage we hope you will understand.
Thanks for coming out and know that after 30 years of bit parts in movies, lots of TV,
stand up and radio too...the show you see will be his greatest ever...as far as you know.
The Steve Cochran Show airs weekday mornings from 5-10am on 720 WGN.

JUST ANNOUNCED!
Jim Belushi
& the Board of Comedy
February 28, 2015 @ 8p
Tickets start at $55
“We are not stand-up comedians. Our show is not a passive, sit-backand-watch experience. Most of the fun we have on stage comes from our
inclusion of the audience – we get suggestions from them and in certain
instances, bring them on-stage with us. It’s less a ‘show’ and more a party.
At least it feels like one to me.” – Jim Belushi
With more than thirty years of experience and an alumnus of “Saturday Night Live” and
Chicago’s famed Second City, JIM BELUSHI is now bringing to the stage an improvised
comedy sketch show featuring members of the Board of Comedy.
Belushi starred on the ABC hit comedy “According to Jim,” on which he also served as
executive producer, music composer and director. After wrapping 182 episodes for its
eighth and final season, the family favorite series also hit a milestone when it launched
into off-net syndication in 2007. A favorite of film, television and stage audiences,
Belushi is one of the great leading character actors equally at home in drama and
comedy, and a gifted performer who can also hold a room as front man of a rhythm
and blues band. Accompanying Belushi are Megan Grano, Larry Joe Campbell, Brad
Morris, and Joshua Funk*, all of whom are classically trained professional improvisers
who tour regularly nationwide.

such, this year Raue Center is being recognized as a landmark by both the city and county.
We are here to contribute to a higher quality of life for all. From youth arts education to
bringing national acts to a neighborhood stage, Raue Center’s 800 seat theatre is a focal
point of this thriving community.
We are home to over 30 community rentals every year as well as over 150 volunteers. The
economic driving force of this theatre has contributed to 100% occupancy in the storefronts
of downtown Crystal Lake. Please consider supporting this cultural touchstone in any way
you are able. Donate online at www.rauecenter.org or reach out to us at 815-356-9010 and

and that is live theatre.
It is simple enough to search out your favorite food, music, and films. Raue
Center For The Arts provides a service that is unheard of in many areas of
America, a place to come together for a live entertainment experience.
We bring a wide spectrum of performances to the stage. Raue Center hosts

talents within the area is something that we believe is very important. They
share the same stage where you can see Amy Grant and Dr. John.
Everyone has a personal connection to some form of art, and Raue Center is
a place to celebrate those connections together. The fact that we have over
150 volunteers speaks to the impact that a theatre can make.
