Well we made it home safe and sound from Washington DC for the “Ride to the Wall”. On the way up, we had 285
miles of HEAVY rain on day one Six of us (four bikes) headed up a day early and met the rest of the group in
Savannah. I was lead bike with Linda Seeley doing Sweep. It rained so hard that it went past my windshield, past the
face shield, past my glasses and into my eyes. I got on the radio and said “I AM BLIND. I CAN’T SEE A THING.” Of
course this happened while on top of the Route 9A bridge. I was only able to see the white line just in front of me so
after we made it off the bridge, Don “Kickstand” Seeley came to the rescue and slid up front. All I did was follow his
four-way flashers. Day two started out the same as the first but after about 30 miles we finally saw the sun.
We all had a great time. This year I went to Arlington National Cemetery for the changing of the Guard and the Laying
of the Wreath. On the trip home, Sharon and I traveled alone just putting some miles behind us. Just enough cloud cover to make the
temperature cool enough for a light jacket. On one of our stops for gas and rest in North Carolina we were greeted by a couple of Army
Vets, non-Harley (Kawasaki Cruiser bike) riders asking where we were from. I told them, “Daytona Beach”, because most people don’t
know where New Smyrna Beach is. He said, “Oh we live just a little south of there”. So I told him we are actually from New Smyrna
Beach and he said, “I know where that is, we are from Oak Hill. Most people don’t know Oak Hill either.” We each shared a couple of
stories from our time in DC and their rest time was up so they mounted up and off they went. About an hour later we passed them stopped
under an overpass waiting out a brief but heavy downpour; the only rain we hit on the way home. It lasted about five miles. There will be a
“Ride to the Wall” IV next year so mark your calendar. It’s a lot of FUN!!!
As we head into the summer months it has been suggested that we have dinner rides to avoid the heat of the day. So we have scheduled
a few in the coming months so watch the calendar. June dinner ride is Saturday the 20th.
Our keynote fundraiser event, “Christmas in July”, is July 18. The flyers have been approved and printed. We are ready to go head on
into this event. We need everyone’s help in asking for donations of door prizes, auction items or sponsorship. If you are not comfortable
doing this, give any of the officers or committee members the contact information and they will handle it. A small stack of flyers can be
dropped off at your favorite restaurant or watering hole. Ask your server or manager if you can hang a flyer up. Printed flyers and
donation forms will be available at the meetings and can be printed off our website. We need your help to make this a success. Remember
this benefit the kids.
Ride turn outs are still very good. This means we must be riding and having FUN! That’s what it’s all about. See ya on the road…….

Hello H.O.G. Friends,
May was my busiest riding month since I started riding in September 2007. May events
included the HOG Key West trip, Traveling HOG to Orlando and the Memorial
Weekend Ride To The Wall. Quite a lot of miles racked up; probably several thousand.
Since I was gone so much in May, I thought for this month’s article I’d do something fun
for all. I looked up some Florida trivia and when I did it, I actually learned some things.
Anyway, the trivia follows.
Oh, FYI, our membership count to date is 296. Ride safe and have fun.

R riding weather. The Poker Run for Officer Sherif El-Shami, theJohn
Orange City
Police Officer shot in the line of duty was a success. Over 300 motorcyclists came out to show their support. I conducted a
safe riding skills demonstration for Pine Ridge High School. This is part of a safe driving and riding program one of their
service clubs promotes annually. Very Cool.
The Drill Team performed the Saturday of Leesburg Bike Fest. The Orlando, Gulf Coast and Central Florida teams also
showed off. The following weekend our team was off to Panama City for Thunder Beach and, yes, they rode. The only trailer
was the one Phil pulls behind his bike carrying our sound system. Thunder Beach was a blast. The original plan was to
perform two shows, one on Friday and the second on Saturday with skills demonstrations as requested. The first performance brought the
house down and people came by the skills demonstration asking when the next show was scheduled. By popular demand we did six shows
each day with the crowds getting larger each time. I’m told the last show on Saturday was performed in front of over 200 spectators.
There is no time to rest; we are working on a new show for J&P Cycles 30th Anniversary in Anamosa, Iowa. This event will be held June 26,
27 and 28. We hope to step it up to an eight man drill with at least one bike riding the flag position.
While on the topic of the Drill Team, our practices have been attended by riders looking to improve their skills. Neal, our trainer, has been
volunteering his time to work with the folks that show up. We also have two new people trying out for the team. If you are in the area of the
Beach Street store on Friday evenings, around 6:30 P.M. come on out and watch us polish our performance for the Anamosa trip. After all we
will be representing the dealership at a national event and want to do our best.
If you have been reading this column over the last few years you are aware I have been trying to find Parsons Branch Road in North Carolina.
I hope to take a quick ride to Cades Cove and find this road later in the summer. This is a dual sport ride with 19 water crossings. The road
is closed during the winter and does not open until May 15. Wish me luck.
If you were planning on going to the rally in Myrtle Beach you better change your plans. The reports I have been reading say the City of
Myrtle Beach no longer wants to host the rally. I don’t know who to believe, vendors want the rally but the local voters have pitched a fit and
bent the ears of the city’s officials. The event has been sponsored by the North Carolina dealers association and they are moving it to New
Bern, North Carolina. It is back to a two day rally May 15 and 16. Check the internet before you head out, “the times they are a changing.”
There are plenty of destinations all making for a good ride. Now get out there and ride but as always, please ride safe.

Hope everyone is getting in lots of riding. Our Saturday morning meeting turn out has proven to be
a good move, more people than when we were meeting on Friday nights.
Warm weather challenges the rider, remember that you need fuel as much as the bike. When you
stop for gas you should be heading to the restroom as well. If not, you are not drinking enough.
Hydration is important while riding. It keeps you alert and watchful. Water or sports drinks that are
made especially for hydrating are what you should be drinking, alcohol, caffeine and soda are not a
substitute.
Our ride attendance has been good over the last months and we hope to keep the numbers up. We try to schedule
shorter rides in the warm weather 50 - 60 miles. Again the hydration thing. If anyone has any ideas or would like to
see a destination repeated let us know.
And finally, we have scheduled another Road Captain. training, re-certification class for Sunday June 28 at
Atlantic High School in Port Orange from 1pm - 4pm. Anyone interested in becoming a Road Captain. is
encouraged to attend. A reminder to all current Road Capt. you are required to re-cert annually in order to keep your
position.
Until next month

Key West Sojourn
We have just returned from a chapter ride to Key West and what a fun weekend! Twenty Three
(23) of us went down and I am happy to report twenty three (23) came back! I have dozens of
stories and tales to tell but the policy of “what happens in Key West stays in Key West” narrows
it down considerably.
The number of riders prohibited a one group ride so we broke into several smaller groups, one
group departing the evening before, another driving four wheels, and the rest leaving at 7:00
A.M. Thursday the following morning, all with a return date of Sunday. I led the last group
(7:00A.M.) and would like to share some of the ride details to encourage you to join us for the next run down, OH
YEAH BABY, we’re going back and soon!
The trip was 425 miles and I know it may sound long but it flew by (no pun intended). We stopped about every 80
miles or so to fuel up, rider comfort, stretch, hydrate, we even ate at a Cracker Barrel for lunch and enjoyed the air
conditioning and a sit down meal. This made for a very pleasant day of riding on some magnificent roads. About 20
miles outside of Key West we met up with the other groups and all rode in together. There was a little competition to
see which group would arrive first, I can’t say who won or how because of the above stated policy but I can say
Linda and I were the first ones to the pool! The entire trip took 8.5 hours, not bad considering all the stops.
Our lodging was fabulous, a small complex of cottages, rooms and dorms all situated around a pool. Some had full
kitchens, others kitchenettes and all had a strong Key West “feel”. The prices ranged from $30/night to $100/night
depending on amenities like, does your room have a door and is the refrigerator inside or outside! It was one block
off Duval (the main drag) and everything was within walking distance.
Some highlights of the trip (remember, I am restricted) were, parasailing (a first for me), sunset cruises on sail boats,
shopping in some very unique shops, watching sunsets and of course eating and drinking. I know this author has
lost some ground gained with the battle against being
gravitationally challenged! Speaking for myself the
highlight, as it always is, was the camaraderie. Sitting
by the pool after a day of walking and exploring and
talking to my fellow travelers was the highlight.
Acquaintances became friends, friends became closer,
and we all have memories that we will have forever!
Finally, I must mention the post Key West Syndrome.
Upon returning home you will notice that you do not
want to get out of bed for at least three days. You will
also notice you have bruises and little nicks and cuts
that you just don’t remember getting. And how did all
these pictures of strangers get into my cell phone?
I know all of you can do this ride, please join us for the
next one!

Larry and Rose Marie Russell
Larry and Rose Marie Russell from New Smyrna Beach, Florida, Life Members of HOG and local Daytona Beach
Chapter members since 1990 set a milestone on March 13, 2009. They turned over 200,000 miles on their FLHTC
Harley which they purchased new in 1990. This event occurred on Maytown Road, Oak Hill, Florida while riding
with other HOG member Bill Brogan, Mary, and Wes.
Larry and Rose Marie have traveled together on this Harley through 46 states, Mexico, Nova Scotia and many
other parts of Canada.
Their accomplishment adds to over 800,000 miles that Larry and Rose Marie have ridden together on a Harley for
54 years. They look forward to many more miles together in the wind.

ACTIVITIES

Gail and Butch Kaddy
Dear Daytona HOG Readers;
First, I want to let everyone know that attending the Primary Officers Training program in
Orlando this past month was well worth the time. The workshops were extremely valuable and
as a result I am a better informed and more enthusiastic HOG member. In attendance were
representatives from nearly every state in the United States, and to my surprise all of the
Chapters north, south, east or west of us basically experience the same kind of problems and
pleasures that we do.
Now that the month of June is here, we can all agree that May, 2009 was one of the wettest months on record. All
of the rain week may have inconvenienced our scheduled weekend rides, but no one in our group is complaining.
We only hope that no one was seriously affected by the downpour we experienced.
Remember that I am always open to new ideas and suggestions involving long or short rides. Notice that we are
beginning to plan early morning and late afternoon rides. As recommended by members who were surveyed
recently, we will keep our rides shorter in distance in order to deal with the intensive heat during our summer
months. So glance at our latest calendar of events and we all look forward to seeing each of you.
