Helping Others Help Themselves Annual Report 2013
Annual Report 2013 Helping O th ers Help T h em sel ves A Year of Modest Growth “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” That statement rings true for this ministry. There are always staff changes to report, new residents joining our “family,” new programs being added or old programs being expanded. But our vision and mission are consistent and our challenges and struggles remain pretty much the same. William Neal, President/CEO Our Partners Annual Report 2013 H e l pi n g O t h e rs He l p T h e m se l ve s On the cover: Resident John Smith and staff member Alice Tiner encourage one another as they both contemplate the zip line at Camp Twin Lakes. 2 Island and was designed for families with young children. The second weekend was held at Camp Twin Lakes near Rutledge and designed for families with older children. All of these events were a big success and paid for by private donations. In 2013 our residents continued to enjoy a number of special activities throughout the year, highlighted by the Residents’ Camp at Twin Lakes and the Christmas Weekend hosted by Smoke Rise Baptist Church in Stone Mountain. Most of these activities are funded by gifts given through our LEAP Fund, and we greatly appreciate the large number of donors who generously contribute to this fund every year. Money is still an issue. There is never enough despite the generosity of so many friends. That’s because this is an expensive ministry. Our staff members do not make exorbitant salaries, but the nature of the work requires that we provide 24/7 services to our residents and that in turn requires a lot of people. Salaries and benefits make up a huge percentage of our budget. I must take this opportunity to brag on our staff. They do a magnificent job of caring for people with disabilities and teaching them to be as independent as possible. Our staff members are “called” to this ministry and they have a great deal of love and compassion and sensitivity for our residents. Many go the second mile in service, going way beyond the requirements of their job description. For example, during the holiday break, we had a number of our residents who had no families with which to spend the holidays. Several of our staff members took those residents home with them to share Christmas with their families. With nearly 100 full-time and part-time workers, we will occasionally have staff members who are not motivated or professional in their work, but they don’t last long. We require dedication on the part of our staff and overall they are a wonderful group of people who make this agency what it is today. Paperwork and government bureaucracy continues to be a big problem for us. The amount of time it takes to get a new home approved or to make a license change is ridiculously long and can cost the agency a lot of money just “waiting” for approvals. For example, this past year we were able to purchase a new home in Jasper for our residents there. But as I write this letter it has taken nearly a year to get approval from all the various agencies to which we report on the state level for us to move our residents and staff from their currently “leased” home to the new one that we are buying. Meanwhile, we must pay both a lease and a mortgage on the two homes while we wait for permission to move from one to the other. Government bureaucracy is a frustration with which we are forced to work. But on a positive note, some things are changing. We are hoping to open the new Griffith Home in Jasper soon, and the year 2014 should see the opening of the new Paul Home in Rome. In 2013 we were able to consolidate some of our apartment residents into existing homes in Dekalb County while opening a new home in Tucker. So the ministry continues to expand. We wish we could do so faster because of the large number of people in our state who need our services. This printed report can only hit the highlights of our ministry. I refer you to two other sources of information about DDM. One is our newsletter, The Helping Hand, which is published six times a year and sent out free of charge by email to all who request it. The other is our website, and that address is ddmga.org. God has blessed this ministry with the support of many great friends. Their names are included in this report. Your generosity is part of what enables us to be successful in serving people with disabilities and their families. And in doing so, we pray we demonstrate the love of Christ for all His special children. This past year we again held our annual Opening New Worlds Conference in Macon, co-sponsored by our friends at Wesley Glen Ministries. The 2014 Conference will be held in the Atlanta area. The year 2013 marked the first time we held two versions of the Special Needs Family Retreat. The first weekend was held at Epworth By The Sea on St. Simons William Neal President/CEO DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES MINISTRIES • A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 1 3 2013 Financial Overview 2013 2012 Increase (Decrease) Total Budget 3,860,950 3,784,500 76,450 Total Operating Revenues 3,779,807 3,770,310 9,497 Total Operating Expenses 3,766,175 3,652,184 113,991 is pleased to report a number of individuals have expressed interest and intent to provide for the development of the DDM ministry endowment through their estates. 2013 Financial Highlights DDM was able to purchase a new home in Jasper for use by the residents there, thanks to a generous grant from the Griffith Family Foundation that provided for a significant down payment. While the mortgage on the home now raises the agency’s total debt, the subsequent value of all properties has gone up. Significantly the mortgage payments on the new Jasper home will be less than the rent payments on the previous temporary home. Other agency debt has been reduced by about $90,000 which leaves the remaining debt at approximately $900,000. The total value of in-kind gifts presented to DDM (primarily in the form of volunteer labor or donated materials was $44,275. Many DDM improvements are undertaken with the help of volunteers representing various churches, civic organizations and other groups. A total of 29 first time donors contributed to DDM in 2013, and their gifts totaled $2,935. The Developmental Disabilities Foundation reported that at year’s end its restricted funds were valued at over $443,753 and unrestricted funds were valued at approximately $37,201. Denel is a graduate of West Georgia College where she earned a Master’s degree in special education. For many years she served as a special education teacher in the public school systems, notably at Griffin High School. While at First Baptist Church she initiated an outstanding program for children with disabilities that is a “model” throughout the state. An ordained Baptist minister, she is active in many community affairs, especially in support of the arts program in Griffin. Denel has served on the DDM Board of Trustees and has been a caregiver for a brother with developmental disabilities. She and her husband, Dennis, have three children. Denel spent a month of transition with her predecessor, Cathy Humphrey. She carries on a great tradition of leadership in residential services and has already won the hearts of her fellow staff members. Sylvia Crowe joined the DDM staff in 2013 as Policies and Procedures Specialist. She came to DDM with over 13 years experience in the developmental disabilities and behavioral health field. She has responsibilities for keeping up with state policies and how they affect the work of DDM. She is also heading up preparations for DDM’s accreditation visit in 2014 by CARF, our accreditation agency. Sylvia lives with her husband, Steve, in Bogart, and they have one son. She attended Truett-McConnell College and the University of Georgia and is an active member of Hebron Christian Church, where she has been involved in the Children’s Ministry for over 25 years. Sylvia is also a big help to the agency as an avid photographer who is often seen with her camera at DDM special events. 2013 Retirements & Resignations Cathy Humphrey Mary Mays Patricia Miller 10 Cathy Humphrey Mary Mays Cathy Humphrey retired at the end of 2013 after serving for two years as director of residential services. Cathy’s overall service at DDM totaled 14 years, during which time she served as director of public relations and later director of church services. She initiated many events at DDM including the Opening New Worlds Conference, the Special Needs Family Retreats, and the Residents’ Camp at Twin Lakes. She was author of the history of DDM and began the Helping Hands newsletter. A graduate of Valdosta State and Mercer universities, she served on the staff of the Georgia Baptist Convention and with the Georgia Baptist Healthcare System, prior to her joining the staff of DDM in 1999. In so many ways she was a vital part of the DDM ministry team and continues to be a strong supporter. Cathy’s family including husband, Lloyd, and children, Amanda and Baker, have also been volunteers for the ministry. Cathy will continue to live in Flowery Branch and currently serves as director of Clairmont Crest, a retirement home in Decatur, operated by Georgia Baptists. Mary Mays took early medical retirement in 2013 after nearly 20 years of service with DDM. At the time of her retirement she was coordinator of the Day Home in Forsyth. Mary won the hearts of many DDM residents and family members through her service at several different homes operated by DDM. She was often sent as a “trouble shooter” to straighten out problems and get homes in order. An active lay leader in the AME church, she received praise from many parents and support personnel for her loving and caring service as a caregiver. DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES MINISTRIES Patricia Miller Patricia Miller also took early retirement in 2013. She was the long-time coordinator of the Don Duvall Home in Decatur County and at one time supervised both the Duvall Home and the Brinson Home in the Bainbridge area. Patricia worked for many years with the same group of men in the home there and lovingly referred to them as “my guys.” Patricia joined DDM in 1995 and did an exemplary job with the agency. • A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 1 3 Special Needs Family Retreat Opening New Worlds Conference Each year the Church Services Division of DDM sponsors two anticipated events—the Opening New Worlds Conference and the Special Needs Family Retreat. together, experiencing wonderful fellowship with other families in similar circumstances and they picked up helpful information and inspiration provided through the various seminars. The 2013 ONW Conference was held at Wesley Glen Ministries in Macon, which partnered with DDM to sponsor the conference. Families of the disabled and church volunteers from across the state attended a number of helpful seminars and the inspirational Friday night banquet included an address by television personality Nancy Grace. DDM and Wesley Glen will continue to partner together on ONW with the 2014 conference being held in metro Atlanta. Both these events are made possible through the generous donations of individuals, churches, and foundations, and were staffed by volunteers from throughout the state. There were two Special Needs Family Retreats held in 2013. The one at Epworth By The Sea was for families with small children. Older children and their families met at Camp Twin Lakes. Johnson Muriel Rogers Joy McDonald Mary Frances Stokes Direct Care Staff Award The Helping Hands Award is the highest honor that DDM can bestow and represents a lifetime of achievement by an individual who has made a difference among people with disabilities. The 2013 winner of this award was Dr. Raymond F. Johnson, vice president and director of operations for DDM. He has served on the DDM staff for 15 years and during that time his job description has changed many times. But Ray Johnson has always been willing to do whatever he was asked to do, even if it was not a part of his job description. In more recent years he has helped to manage facilities and vehicles, oversee the opening of new homes, organize DDM’s growing IT network, served as liaison with state government agencies, as well as volunteering for Opening New Worlds and the Special Needs Family Retreats. A native of Florida, Johnson is a graduate of Stetson University, the University of North Carolina, New Orleans Baptist Seminary, and the University of Georgia. He and his wife, Beverly, have two grown daughters and one granddaughter. They are active members of Johns Creek Baptist Church where he serves as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and choir member. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Ray previously served on church staffs in Cornelia and Athens, and was for many years a part of the Georgia Baptist Convention staff, first as director of public relations, and later as director of the Education Division. Johnson joins the ranks of our previous recipients: James N. Griffith, Richard Davis, Howard Chatham, Denny Spear, Bruce Burt, Frances Stokes, and Varion Spear. Each year an outstanding direct care staff member is honored for their service to the DDM residents. This award is named for Frances Stokes, who served for many years as DDM’s program director. The 2013 recipient was Joy McDonald, currently coordinator of DDM’s Old Lantern Home. Joy has served with DDM since February of 2012. She has served in several of the DDM homes, even managing two homes during interim periods. She has done an excellent job of dealing with difficult situations. Joy is a minister in her church, Behold the Light Christian Ministries in Decatur, and involved in a number of outreach ministries. She recently completed a college degree through the University of Phoenix. Bill Stokes Volunteer of the Year Award Holly Adams, a special education teacher in the Dekalb County School System was the 2013 recipient of the Bill Stokes Volunteer of the Year Award. This award is named for the man who faithfully volunteered his services in a number of capacities during the many years that his wife, Frances, served as program director for DDM. Holly has a Masters degree in special education and has a wonderful reputation as a classroom teacher. She has for the last several years volunteered for the DDM Special Needs Family Retreats and has used her expertise in serving not only the children attending those meetings, but their parents as well. Mary Frances Duren Teacher of the Year Award Holly Adams 12 This award is presented each year at the Opening New Worlds Conference to a Sunday School teacher in a Georgia church who has shown great commitment to the disabled people in their care. The award is named for Mary Frances Duren, an outstanding teacher at First Baptist Church of Jesup, who has served as a DDM trustee, and who still volunteers for many DDM projects, such as the Special Needs Family Retreat. The 2013 award was presented to Muriel Rogers, a protégé of Miss Duren, who has worked for many years in the program at Jesup First Baptist Church. Congratulations to this outstanding and dedicated teacher who is representative of all the faithful church teachers throughout the state who serve both adults and children with developmental disabilities. In the Spring DDM residents enjoyed a trip to a day game for the Gwinnett Braves which included a picnic at the stadium. In the fall they returned to beautiful Camp Twin Lakes near Rutledge for their annual camp. Many donors from across the state contributed gifts to make this special week possible. Activities included swimming, boating, fishing, basketball, golf, arts and crafts, and even a zip line! But several times each year residents from all the homes are invited to participate in state-wide events that bring the DDM family together. The most popular of those events is the Christmas Weekend in Atlanta each December. It consists of the Christmas Banquet on Friday evening for residents, staff, and their families, and a Christmas party for the residents on Saturday. In 2013 those events were held at Smoke Rise Baptist Church in Stone Mountain. Many people volunteered to help with the program, including a group from Tucker First Baptist Church who provide Christmas stockings each year for all the residents. 14 DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES MINISTRIES A Residents Council is composed of representatives from throughout the State and meets regularly with the staff to plan for these special activities. Mr. Aaron Bearden of the Jasper Home served as chair during 2013. • A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 1 3 Holiday Spree The Holiday Spree at Villa Christina has become a favorite annual event, raising money for our residents’ activities and assistance, and the Special Family Retreat. Gift baskets of all kinds are donated along with many other items for the silent auction. The bake sale, which included cakes, pies, and cookies, was the best one yet. Over 160 ladies attended and enjoyed the wonderful fellowship as well as the shopping. Over $10,000 was raised at this year’s spree. In Memoriam James Howard Chatham (1921-2014) was a pioneer Atlanta residential homebuilder and developer who left a legacy of unparalleled business accomplishments, national honors, recognitions and charitable initiatives throughout greater Atlanta. He was above all a Christian gentleman of tremendous vision and faith. He left a great legacy to DDM through his donation of and support for the J. Howard Chatham Group Home in Milton. In 2009 he received DDM’s highest honor, the Helping Hands Award. He was a charter member of Northside Baptist Church in Roswell. Mr. Chatham died on January 1 at age 92. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Grace, along with four children, ten grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 1 3 B. J. Thomas (1930 -2013) was DDM’s oldest resident, having lived at the Appalachee Home in Statham since it opened in 1991. He had to go to a nursing home shortly before his death at age 82. B.J. was well known within the community where he had many related family members. He worked part-time at a local bank and was a long-time active member of Bethabara Baptist Church, which is located directly across the road from the home. That church actually donated the property on which the group home now sits, and the church’s active involvement with the home was initially based on its long-time relationship with B.J. A very loving man in so many ways, B.J. will be greatly missed by friends and family and the community he called home. • H E L P I N G O T H E R S H E L P T H E M S E L V E S 15 Non-Profit Org.
