winter 2014 - Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens
ZOOviews WIN T ER 2014 CENTRAL FLORIDA & BOTANICAL GARDENS For the Animals Our residents come with feathers, fur, claws, and hooves. They have unusual eating patterns and nontraditional table manners. Their demands may seem somewhat peculiar, but each day the nearly 580 residents of the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens delight, educate and contribute to your connection to the natural world. Every day our animal ambassadors dine on over 70 pounds of produce; 112 pounds of seeds, chow, and grain; 66 pounds of meat; and a bunch of insects. When you consider feeding these animals 365 days a year it translates to almost 90,000 pounds of food. Added to this is the cost of caring for many of our endangered animals. All these costs include medications, many that you may take yourself, such as antihistamines, multivitamins, and tetanus shots. Our spider monkeys even get Flintstone Gummy Vitamins! Tell that to your kids! It costs close to $100,000 a year for the Zoo to care for and feed the animals you and our other guests enjoy each year. The Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization; as such we rely on friends and supporters like you to assist us in our efforts to create an educational and entertaining experience for everyone. We hope you will consider a contribution to the Zoo. ZOOviews Mission: A conservation resource providing experiences that excite and inspire children and adults to learn and act on behalf of wildlife. Feature Creatures Other Recent Additions Vision: The Zoo will empower our guests to respect, value and care for our natural resources, as we commit to contributing globally to the conservation and preservation of wildlife. As a regional resource in the Central Florida area and beyond, we will provide innovative and creative solutions through collaboration, practices and partnerships. The continued growth and development of the Zoo will further enhance its attraction to visitors outside the local community enabling us to bring national and international attention to the importance and ongoing efforts of wildlife sustainability. Six adorable baby American alligators and a bunch of endangered coqui frogs have recently hatched! Also, a second aquarium, filled with lionfish and one zebra moray eel, is now on display in the Wayne M. Densch Discovery Center. Zoo Park Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Gage, a one-and-a-half year old male, arrived October 16, and has settled in nicely with the Zoo’s two other male giraffes, Emba and Rafiki. Gage was born on February 6, 2013, and came from the Brevard Zoo. He now stands approximately 11 feet tall, and although he looks small compared to Emba and Rafiki, he is big for his age. The Zoo is proud to now have three out of the nine sub-species of giraffe! Emba is a Rothschild's, Rafiki is a reticulated, and Gage is a Masai. With the continuation of the giraffe feedings and the cooler weather, now is the perfect time to come meet Gage! Chacoan Peccaries After a long drive from St. Louis Zoo, five endangered female Chacoan peccaries have arrived at the Zoo and are now on exhibit next to the warthogs. And speaking of warthogs, the new male warthog is getting along nicely with the females and there seems to be a bit of romance budding in this cooler weather! The Zoo’s Orianne Center for Indigo Conservation Needs Your Help! indigo snake initiative captive breeding • reintroduction The Orianne Center for Indigo Conservation (OCIC) is a cutting edge conservation facility built specifically for the propagation of the eastern indigo snake. Snakes produced at the OCIC are used as reintroduction stock for regions where they have disappeared. This reintroduction program is guided by the Indigo Reintroduction Committee, comprised of all partners and stakeholders involved with indigo conservation. OCIC staff maintains the Eastern Indigo Snake Studbook and manages the Species Survival Plan for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. OCIC is located in east Lake County and is home to a health care center, herpetarium, administrative office, and support facilities. All buildings are specifically designed to facilitate a comprehensive approach to long-term captive breeding programs for indigos and snakes of conservation importance. This location is an ideal environment to teach conservation and an appreciation of Florida’s natural communities while immersing students in nature. All snake programs at the center are designed to promote public education and to foster tolerance of snakes in our natural communities. We need your help to conserve these wonderful animals and their environments. The Zoo has many different volunteer opportunities for various ages including: • Docents (with a new class starting February 2015!) • Teen Team • Animal Nutrition Volunteer • Internships & Job Shadowing • Zoo Giraffe Ambassador Photo by Susan Wenner Why volunteer? Volunteers play a vital role in providing an exciting and educational experience to the over 300,000 guests who visit the Zoo each year. In addition, volunteers offer invaluable support by donating their time and talents. Volunteering at the Zoo has many benefits. Volunteers can receive education and training, discounts on admission, concessions, and annual passes. It's also a great way to meet new people and obtain valuable experience. Come to the Zoo and see how sunlight is made into energy! FPL, in partnership with the Zoo, has installed solar energy panels to help capture and generate energy and supply electrical power to the Wayne M. Densch Discovery Center. Now that the panels are up and running, the Zoo is offering a 10% discount off admission (for up to 6 guests per transaction) with coupon. Go to www.centralfloridazoo.org/solarcoupon or www.fpl.com/solar to print your coupon. I have truly enjoyed learning more about these beautiful animals and sharing my knowledge with others," said Kristen Howell . "It's always nice when visitors can walk away with a better understanding of the giraffes". ZO Oviews • WIN T ER 2014 Letter from the CEO Dear Partners of the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens, What a great year it has been! Since flipping the calendar to 2014 we have celebrated new additions to the Zoo including a giraffe exhibit that is home to three male giraffes, Emba, Rafiki, and Gage. We have added leopards, peccaries, and a new male warthog and celebrated the birth of a clouded leopard cub as well as pygmy goats, hornbills and tawny frogmouths. As a resource on wildlife, wild places, and conservation, it is our mission to create educational experiences that inspire the children we teach. As evidence of this commitment we made a significant impact on the school children of Central Florida by reaching close to 200,000 students through our many programs and outreaches. In addition, we have added to our Zoo family the Orianne Center for Indigo Conservation (OCIC) located in Eustis, Florida. The OCIC is a premier reptile conservation center focusing on the conservation of the threatened eastern indigo snake. This year 67 indigos were hatched at the 25 acre facility, and once they reach a certain age, they will be released into the wild at monitored reintroduction sites. This is real conservation, saving species and habitats, and a program touted by conservationists throughout the southeast. Your support is critical to the continuing growth of the Zoo and its impact on the quality of life in Central Florida. Through your dedication we are able to maintain our commitment to the mission and vision of your Zoo. As 2014 comes to a close we are always eager to thank all those who have contributed to our success. We are anticipating an even greater 2015 and will need your help to continue to move the Zoo forward as a premier visitor and educational resource for everyone in our area. All our best wishes during the Holidays and for the year to come, and again, thank you for your support! Fred Antonio CEO Of course, none of this would be possible without the help of our many community partners and businesses that support the Zoo. 1% For The Planet 96 Elephants American Automobile Association ABC Liquors Ace Hardware Aquatic Weed Control Advance Eye Care Adventure Landing Alex & Ani Winter Park The Alley Blues Bar Alliance for Independence Allied - THA AmaZulu Inc.
