A Message from our Pastor
Fr. Bob Cilinski
“When the doors were locked where the disciples were,
Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them,
“Peace be with you’” - John 20:19-23
My dear parishioners,
The Feast of Pentecost celebrates the birth of the church
and a new springtime of the Holy Spirit. Jesus, the Prince of
Peace, enters despite locked doors. He even breaks
through the boundary of fear which had the disciples all
locked up. That was easy for Jesus to do since he had
already transcended the boundary of death. Jesus brings
peace, the balm that heals all differences and translates well
in every language. Peace is truly the gift of Pentecost. If we
celebrate this feast, we are empowered to be peacemakers
in our own home, parish and workplace. If “peace” seems
like a foreign language, then it’s time to pray fervently for the
gift of the Holy Spirit to be released in our church and in our
world once more.
Let us allow the Holy Spirit to keep building our community
in a new way. The beginning of our Phase II Construction
will provide for an enclosed lobby to our church, a pantry to
serve the lobby, new expanded offices and reception area,
enlarged restrooms, additional family restrooms, a new
meeting room and new HVAC (heat/air-conditioning units for
this new space). This new construction will make Nativity an
even more welcoming and inviting place. The Holy Spirit has
guided us to this new moment in this Jubilee Year of Mercy.
It is an exciting time for the Church.

Nativity Parish has made 1,328 pledges with 26%
participation, donating $561,962 which is 105% of our
goal. Many thanks to Bill Canavan and his wife Janet who
chaired our BLA committee this year. The following
message was sent by Bishop Paul Loverde.
“Dear Father Cilinski,
I have learned that your parish has achieved its 2016 BLA
financial goal. I am thankful to your staff and parish
leaders who have been key components of the BLA
campaign initiative. Further I ask you to convey my
heartfelt gratitude to your parishioners for their support of
the BLA. Their generous response to this appeal which
helps so many people in need, truly embodies the spirit of
this year’s theme “ Go Forth as Heralds of God’s Mercy.”

WON’S Annual
Baby Shower
(Women of Nativity)
This year our annual baby shower will be held the
weekend of June 11th and 12th.
We will be helping nine organizations this year. Some
of these organizations that will benefit from your
generosity include ECHO, Catholic Charities, A
Woman’s Choice, Lorton Community Action Center,
and Birthright in Manassas.
We will send a monetary donation to Divine Mercy
Care Center, too. Also we will be helping Stella Marina
provide newborn infant onesies to Haitian moms
as part of their newborn kits.
Some of the needed items are: New Infant Car Seats,
Pack n’ Plays (new or like new), Umbrella strollers,
Maternity clothing (new or clean gently used items),
Onesies or Sleepers sizes NB to 9 months, receiving
blankets, crib sheets, Disposable Diapers NB – size 5.
Baby Toiletries (shampoo, diaper cream, body wash,
hairbrush and comb, baby lotion), Baby bottles (BPA
free only), Baby pacifiers, and Infant Clothing
(new/like new) sizes NB to 4T. If you prefer gift cards
from Walmart, Target, Babies R Us,
as well as grocery stores are welcome.
If you are donating gently used items, please, only
clean, unstained items. As always, your generosity is
greatly appreciated by WON and the recipients. If you

PHASE II CONSTRUCTION ON NATIVITY
CHURCH TO BEGIN ON MAY 16, 2016
We are beginning construction of our New Enclosed
NARTHEX of the Church and new offices.
Construction is expected to take five months.
During construction, the front entrance to the Church, the
gift shop and the office area will be closed, as well as the
atrium walkway from the school lobby.
Our “Temporary Entrance to the Church” will be the two
side doorways on the left side of the Church. A third
exit/entrance to the Church is on the choir side that allows
access to and from the school.
To provide for the needs of the Community during
construction, our offices will be relocated to a temporary
trailer near the church. There will also be a handicapped
accessible restroom trailer available as well as access to
the school restrooms.
Let us pray for the success of our new renovations and the
safety of all the workers. Many thanks to the Nativity
Parishioners for your generosity.

DIOCESAN RETIRED PRIESTS’ COLLECTION
There will be a second collection for the care of our diocesan
retired priests this weekend. Currently there are 22 retired priests
and an additional 17 diocesan priests who will retire in the next ten

advantage of the Early Bird Discount and register prior to
August 1. Class placement is on a first-come, first-serve basis
according to the date the registration form is received in the
Religious Education Office. Submit a completed Student
Registration form (one per family), an Emergency Care Form
for each student, payment, and a copy of a student’s baptism
certificate (including students baptized at Nativity) unless the
baptism certificate is already on file in the Religious

sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved.
Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being
enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking
happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his
betrayal, and assured Paradise to the
repentant sinner.
Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you
spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!”
You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who
manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the
Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen
and glorified.

Bishop Paul Loverde cordially invites victims/survivors of
sexual abuse and their spouse or support person to a
Support group evening on May 17 at St. Ann Catholic
Church in Arlington. The evening begins at 5:45 p.m. and
consists of a light meal, group discussion, followed by a
prayer service. Due to the nature and sensitivity of the
subject, this event is for victims/survivors and a spouse/

filter, stubborn toilet, jammed garbage disposal, broken
screen, towel rack that was used for chin ups? …..the list
goes on and on. There is a group of men in the Knights of
Columbus who have formed a “Handy Knights” ministry.

Wives’ Appreciation Event Our Council’s
annual wives’ appreciation dinner will be on

dinner. Member Knights pay for their dinner, drinks and

Perfect! Preschool Plays With Ponies!
Our preschool class recently met a new friend. He’s blond and
hairy, stands about 2 and ½ feet tall, and doesn’t attend class
regularly. He’s Teddy, the Pony, and our preschoolers fell in
love with him, and he fell in love with them. The students took
turns petting and brushing him, and giving him water.

Envías tu Espíritu y son creados
La tarde de Pascua, Jesús en el cenáculo «sopló sobre ellos [sus
discípulos] y les dijo: "Recibid el Espíritu Santo"» [Jn 20,19-23
Ndr]). Este soplo de Cristo evoca el gesto de Dios que, en la
creación, «sopló sobre el hombre, hecho de polvo del suelo, un
aliento de vida, y resultó el hombre un ser viviente» (Gn 2,7).
Con aquel gesto Jesús viene a decir, por lo tanto, que el Espíritu
Santo es el soplo divino que da vida a la nueva creación, como dio
vida a la primera creación. El Salmo responsorial subraya este
tema: «Envías tu soplo y son creados, y renuevas la faz de la tierra» [Sal 103,1-34. Ndr].
Proclamar que el Espíritu Santo es creador significa decir que su
esfera de acción no se restringe sólo a la Iglesia, sino que se extiende a toda la creación. Ningún tiempo, ningún lugar están
privados de su presencia activa. Él actúa en la Biblia y fuera de
ella; actúa antes de Cristo, en el tiempo de Cristo y después de
Cristo, si bien nunca separadamente de Él. «Toda verdad, de
donde quiera que venga dicha -escribió Santo Tomás de Aquino-,
viene del Espíritu Santo». Cierto: la acción del Espíritu de Cristo
fuera de la Iglesia no es la misma que dentro de la Iglesia y en los
sacramentos. Allí Él actúa por poder , aquí por presencia, en persona.
Lo más importante, a propósito del poder creador del Espíritu
Santo, no es en cambio comprenderlo o explicar sus implicaciones, sino experimentarlo. ¿Y qué significa experimentar al Espíritu como creador? Para descubrirlo partimos del relato de la
creación. «En el principio creó Dios los cielos y la tierra. La tierra
era caos y confusión y oscuridad por encima del abismo, y un
viento de Dios aleteaba por encima de las aguas» (Gn 1, 1-2). Se
deduce que el universo existía ya en el momento en que interviene el Espíritu, pero aún era informe y tenebroso, caos. Es
después de su acción cuando lo creado asume contornos precisos;
la luz se separa de las tinieblas, la tierra del mar, y todo adquiere
una forma definida.
El Espíritu Santo es, por lo tanto, Aquél que permite pasar -a la
creación- del caos al cosmos, el que hace así algo bello, ordenado,
limpio ( cosmos viene de la misma raíz que cosmético, ¡y quiere
decir bello!), realiza así un «mundo», según el doble significado
de esta palabra. La ciencia nos enseña hoy que este proceso ha
durado miles de millones de años, pero lo que la Biblia quiere
decirnos, con lenguaje sencillo e imaginativo, es que la lenta evolución hacia la vida y el orden actual del mundo no ocurrió por
casualidad, obedeciendo a impulsos ciegos de la materia, sino por
un proyecto aplicado en él, desde el inicio, por el creador.
La acción creadora de Dios no se limita al instante inicial; Él está
siempre en acto de crear. Aplicado al Espíritu Santo, esto significa
que Él es siempre el que hace pasar del caos al cosmos, esto es,
del desorden al orden, de la confusión a la armonía, de la deformidad a la belleza, de la vejez a la juventud. Esto a todos los
niveles: en el macrocosmos y en el microcosmos, o sea, en el
universo entero así como en cada hombre.
Debemos creer que, a pesar de las apariencias, el Espíritu Santo
está a la obra en el mundo y lo hace progresar. ¡Cuántos descubrimientos nuevos, no sólo en el campo físico, sino también en el
moral y social! Un texto del Concilio Vaticano II dice que el Espíritu Santo está a la obra en la evolución del orden social del
mundo ( «Gaudium et spes», 26 ). No es sólo el mal el que crece,
sino también el bien, con la diferencia de que el mal se elimina,
termina consigo mismo, mientras que el bien se acumula, permanece. Ciertamente aún existe mucho caos a nuestro alrededor:
caos moral, político, social. El mundo tiene todavía mucha necesidad del Espíritu Santo; por ello no debemos cansarnos de invocarle con las palabras del Salmo: «¡Envía tu Espíritu, Señor, y
renueva la faz de la tierra!».

Es el Espíritu Santo quien dirige la historia de la salvación hasta la plena manifestación del Señor en la Parusía.

Este mes se despide con la coincidencia de la solemnidad de
Pentecostés, con la tradicional fiesta mariana del 31 de mayo.
Una buena ocasión para sentirnos cautivados por el modelo de
la Virgen María, Esposa del Espíritu Santo, que ha sido la criatura humana que con mayor docilidad se ha dejado moldear y
conducir por el Espíritu de Dios.
Nuestra fe católica afirma que la tercera persona de la Santísima Trinidad procede del Padre y del Hijo. Con profunda veneración, constatamos además que la presencia y la intercesión de
María en el Cenáculo fue providencial para que los Apóstoles
recibiesen el don del Espíritu en el primer Pentecostés de la era
cristiana. Dios ha querido que el mayor de sus dones, el Espíritu Santo, tenga a María por madrina, al igual que el resto
de las gracias del Cielo.
El Espíritu Santo, plenitud de la obra de Cristo
Para que nos demos cuenta de la importancia del Espíritu Santo en la vida de la Iglesia, nos puede ayudar el reflexionar sobre las palabras de Jesús en el Evangelio de San Juan: Os conviene que yo me vaya, porque así vendrá a vosotros el Espíritu
que viene de mi Padre (Jn 16, 7). Dicho de otra manera:
¡hemos salido ganando con la Ascensión de Jesús a los cielos,
porque fue compensada con creces en la venida del Espíritu
Santo! En efecto, sin la acción del Espíritu Santo no habríamos
podido conocer en profundidad a Jesucristo: Pero el abogado,
el Espíritu Santo, a quien el Padre enviará en mi nombre, hará
que recordéis cuanto yo os he enseñado y os lo explicará todo
(Jn 14, 26).
Dos errores distintos, pero confluyentes
Necesitamos renovar nuestra fe en el Espíritu Santo, precisamente cuando se está extendiendo la absurda creencia de que
el acceso a la figura de Jesucristo haya podido permanecer
vedado hasta el momento presente. Parece que gracias a algunas recientes investigaciones ¡estaríamos en disposición de
conocer, por primera vez, el mensaje original de Jesucristo!
Esta falsa suposición se está difundiendo en ámbitos y niveles
bien distintos:
En primer lugar, la encontramos muy desarrollada en la abundante literatura y filmografía anticatólica de corte esotérico. Se
intenta intoxicar la opinión pública, presentando lo que es mera
quimera e invención, bajo un ambiguo formato que emula a la
historia novelada. Los guiones de estas producciones son muy
similares: la Iglesia Católica habría secuestrado al auténtico
Jesucristo a lo largo de la historia, hasta que ha llegado este
momento en que somos liberados de la ignorancia, gracias al
descubrimiento de algún papiro secreto que habría sido ocultado y custodiado a lo largo de los siglos por las órdenes oscurantistas medievales. ¡La cosa sería para tomarla a risa, si no
fuera por la desafección sembrada, que lleva incluso a
confundir la ficción con la realidad!
Pero no estamos hablando exclusivamente de un fenómeno
extraeclesial. Entre nosotros, también se desarrollan métodos
exegéticos que buscan el acceso al Jesús histórico, que bien
parecen dar crédito a la premisa de que la fe en Jesucristo
predicada por la Iglesia Católica se haya alejado de la figura
originaria. En efecto, determinadas exégesis de los textos
evangélicos utilizan exclusivamente el método histórico-crítico,
y desprecian o ignoran la exégesis canónica que la Iglesia ha
realizado durante veinte siglos bajo la asistencia del Espíritu
Santo. Quienes así proceden, parecen olvidarse de que el Magisterio de la Iglesia y los mismos santos, han sido inspirados y
sostenidos en todo momento por la acción del Espíritu, para
profundizar y predicar el misterio de Cristo.
Nosotros no dudamos de que la promesa de asistencia del Espíritu se ha visto cumplida con creces, de forma que hoy estamos en disposición de hacer una afirmación que posiblemente

pueda sorprender y escandalizar a quienes han asumido los errores de planteamiento a los que nos hemos referido: los católicos
del siglo XXI tenemos un conocimiento mucho más profundo y
exacto de la figura y del mensaje de Jesucristo que el que tuvieron
sus primeros discípulos. Más aún, no nos cabe duda de que los
cristianos que vivan dentro de cinco siglos se habrán acercado a
Jesucristo y a su Evangelio, todavía más que nosotros.
En pocas palabras: el paso del tiempo no nos ha alejado de Jesucristo, sino todo lo contrario; ya que es el Espíritu Santo quien
dirige la historia de la salvación hasta la plena manifestación del
Señor en la Parusía. Mientras tanto, el Paráclito, el Espíritu de la
Verdad, continúa guiándonos hacia la plena comprensión del misterio de Cristo, nos fortalece con sus dones y nos enriquece con
sus carismas.
Nos preparamos para un nuevo Pentecostés, porque Dios desea
completar en nosotros la santidad que obró en María. Así lo decía
el Papa bueno, el beato Juan XXIII: El Espíritu Santo, que formó el
cuerpo de Cristo en el seno de María, forma también, une, sana y
fortifica a los miembros de Cristo. Por ello, por intercesión de Santa María suplicamos: ¡Ven, Espíritu Santo!

Evangelio de la Misa: Jn 14,15-16; 23-26
Fidelidad al Espíritu
El mensaje litúrgico de este día hay que descubrirlo en las
tres lecturas de la Misa, pues están perfectamente trabadas
e interrelacionadas. Incluso, para mejor entenderlo, es
conveniente acudir a todas las lecturas de la misa vespertina y las que se usan en la vigilia nocturna. Todos estos
constituyen un verdadero tratado de teología bíblica sobre
Pentecostés, el Espíritu Santo, la Iglesia, el apostolado y la
evangelización, y sobre la oración del cristiano. Merece la
pena leerlas y llevarlas a la oración personal.

Señor, Jesús, Espíritu Santo, que te muestras con los
dones divinos que transcienden todo lo humano, y son capaces de transformar los corazones con tu amor, en forma
de sabiduría, temor de Dios, fortaleza, paciencia, alegría.
Ilumíname y transfórmame con tus siete dones, para que
goce contigo y disfrute con mis hermanos los hombres;
para que acoja a todos, y por todos trabaje, me sacrifique
y me entregue. Sé que sin Ti no puedo hacer ninguna obra
meritoria, pero confío plenamente en tu promesa. Y es que
¡ además te “siento” tan cercano tan consolador, tan reconfortante y tan provocador, cuando soy humilde y sincero, y
cuando rezo y te escucho!. Me emociona, Señor, y me estimula ver a tus apóstoles transformados por tu Espíritu
Santo. Ya sé que se estaba iniciando la etapa histórica de
la Iglesia; pero tu Espíritu no se ha agotado, ni apartado,
sino que sigue actuando y operando la santidad y las gestas apostólicas en la Iglesia. ¡Tengo tantos ejemplos de tu
presencia santificadora en cristianos ejemplares y en santos anónimos y canonizados, que no puedo dudar tu Santo
Espíritu! Pero también observo algunas traiciones a tus
promesas y ayudas de santidad, que a veces me
desconciertas y asustas. Solo te pido, Señor, “que nunca
pierda la cabeza” para verte y sentirte, para actuar en todo
momento con sentido común, y también con el sentido sobrenatural al juzgar, opinar y actuar. Y al mismo tiempo
que mantenga incólume la humildad, y valientemente la
sinceridad. Que no olvide, Señor, tus palabras: “Si me
amáis, guardaréis mis mandamientos. Yo le pediré al Padre
que os dé otro Defensor que esté siempre con vosotros, el
Espíritu de la Verdad”. Con esta confianza te rezo hoy, y
quiero hacerlo todos los días: “Ven Espíritu Divino, llena los
corazones de tus fieles, y enciende en ellos el fuego de tu
amor”.
“Envía tu Espíritu, Señor, y repuebla la faz de la tierra. Aleluya, aleluya”.

¿Qué es Pentecostés? Una festividad cristiana que data del siglo primero y estaba muy estrechamente relacionada con la Pascua

Originalmente se denominaba “fiesta de las semanas” y tenía lugar siete
semanas después de la fiesta de los primeros frutos (Lv 23 15-21; Dt
169). Siete semanas son cincuenta días; de ahí el nombre de Pentecostés (= cincuenta) que recibió más tarde. Según Ex 34 22 se celebraba al término de la cosecha de la cebada y antes de comenzar la del
trigo; era una fiesta movible pues dependía de cuándo llegaba cada año
la cosecha a su sazón, pero tendría lugar casi siempre durante el mes
judío de Siván, equivalente a nuestro Mayo/Junio. En su origen tenía un
sentido fundamental de acción de gracias por la cosecha recogida, pero
pronto se le añadió un sentido histórico: se celebraba en esta fiesta el
hecho de la alianza y el don de la ley.
En el marco de esta fiesta judía, el libro de los Hechos coloca la efusión
del Espíritu Santo sobre los apóstoles (Hch 2 1.4). A partir de este acontecimiento, Pentecostés se convierte también en fiesta cristiana de primera categoría (Hch 20 16; 1 Cor 168).
PENTECOSTÉS, algo más que la venida del espíritu...
La fiesta de Pentecostés es uno de los Domingos más importantes del
año, después de la Pascua. En el Antiguo Testamento era la fiesta de la
cosecha y, posteriormente, los israelitas, la unieron a la Alianza en el
Monte Sinaí, cincuenta días después de la salida de Egipto.
Aunque durante mucho tiempo, debido a su importancia, esta fiesta fue
llamada por el pueblo segunda Pascua, la liturgia actual de la Iglesia, si
bien la mantiene como máxima solemnidad después de la festividad de
Pascua, no pretende hacer un paralelo entre ambas, muy por el contrario, busca formar una unidad en donde se destaque Pentecostés
como la conclusión de la cincuentena pascual. Vale decir como una
fiesta de plenitud y no de inicio. Por lo tanto no podemos desvincularla
de la Madre de todas las fiestas que es la Pascua.
En este sentido, Pentecostés, no es una fiesta autónoma y no puede
quedar sólo como la fiesta en honor al Espíritu Santo. Aunque lamentablemente, hoy en día, son muchísimos los fieles que aún tienen esta
visión parcial, lo que lleva a empobrecer su contenido.
Hay que insistir que, la fiesta de Pentecostés, es el segundo domingo
más importante del año litúrgico en donde los cristianos tenemos la
oportunidad de vivir intensamente la relación existente entre la Resurrección de Cristo, su Ascensión y la venida del Espíritu Santo.
Es bueno tener presente, entonces, que todo el tiempo de Pascua es,
también, tiempo del Espíritu Santo, Espíritu que es fruto de la Pascua,
que estuvo en el nacimiento de la Iglesia y que, además, siempre estará
presente entre nosotros, inspirando nuestra vida, renovando nuestro
interior e impulsándonos a ser testigos en medio de la realidad que nos
corresponde vivir. Culminar con una vigilia: Entre las muchas actividades que se preparan para esta fiesta, se encuentran, las ya
tradicionales, Vigilias de Pentecostés que, bien pensadas y lo
suficientemente preparadas, pueden ser experiencias profundas y significativas para quienes participan en ellas. Una vigilia,
que significa “Noche en vela” porque se desarrolla de noche, es
un acto litúrgico, una importante celebración de un grupo o
una comunidad que vigila y reflexiona en oración mientras la
población duerme. Se trata de estar despiertos durante la noche a la espera de la luz del día de una fiesta importante, en
este caso Pentecostés. En ella se comparten, a la luz de la
Palabra de Dios, experiencias, testimonios y vivencias. Todo en
un ambiente de acogida y respeto. Es importante tener
presente que la lectura de la Sagrada Escritura, las oraciones,
los cantos, los gestos, los símbolos, la luz, las imágenes, los
colores, la celebración de la Eucaristía y la participación de la
asamblea son elementos claves de una Vigilia. En el caso de
Pentecostés centramos la atención en el Espíritu Santo
prometido por Jesús en reiteradas ocasiones y, ésta vigilia,
puede llegar a ser muy atrayente, especialmente para los
jóvenes, precisamente por el clima de oración, de alegría y
fiesta. Algo que nunca debiera estar ausente en una Vigilia de
Pentecostés son los dones y los frutos del Espíritu Santo. A
través de diversas formas y distintos recursos (lenguas de fuego, palomas, carteles, voces grabadas, tarjetas, pegatinas,
etc.) debemos destacarlos y hacer que la gente los tenga
presente, los asimile y los haga vida. No sacamos nada con
mencionarlos sólo para esta fiesta, o escribirlos en hermosas
tarjetas, o en lenguas de fuego hechas en cartulinas
fosforescentes, si no reconocemos que nuestro actuar diario
está bajo la acción del Espíritu y de los frutos que vayamos
produciendo. Invoquemos, una vez más, al Espíritu Santo para
que nos regale sus luces y su fuerza y, sobre todo, nos haga
fieles testigos de Jesucristo, nuestro Señor.
