M
arísol and Daniel Mejía sat
in the plush red velvet seats
of the United Palace’s front row,
listening to the fourth movement
of Dvorak’s New World Symphony
one recent afternoon.
Their children, Nomar, 9, and Daneyra, 12,
were on stage, performing in the orchestra.
They are rehearsing for a special June 28th
performance at the Palace in Washington
Heights. More than 150 children from New York,
New Jersey and even New Orleans youth
orchestras will converge on the Palace to
play as one. Jamie Bernstein, the daughter of
the famed composer and conductor Leonard
Bernstein, will host the evening.
The Mejías are a musical Bronx family.
The children play the trumpet in UpBeat
NYC’s after school program three times a
week. At home, they practice with their father,
who follows along on the keyboard.
The children have only been in the program
for six months, but they’ve already performed
in a concert and won a prize.
“They really like it,” said their father. “I
thank God that I got them into this program. I
really love it for the kids.”
Like all of the other orchestral programs
feature in the concert, UpBeat NYC is an
El Sistema-based program. El Sistema
originated in Venezuela. Its basic tenet is
that when children are introduced to music,
society not only has better musicians—they

ultimately end up with a better society. Liza Austria, UpBeat’s co-founder, said
their Bronx-based program has taken off this
year. They have a total of 110 students, both
in orchestra and pre-orchestra programs. The
children have been performing a lot, traveling
to other boroughs, and meeting other young
musicians.
“The exciting thing about it is that a
lot of kids don’t necessarily leave their
neighborhood in the Bronx,” she said. “So
they are seeing other kids doing they same
thing. In our neighborhood, there’s not
another orchestra. They don’t know other kids
do this.”
UpBeat NYC is very much a family affair.
Austria, along with her mother, brother
and husband, run the program. They took
inspiration from their late father, Jaime
Austria. A bass player for top New York
orchestras, he was excited about El Sistema
programs and talked about it all the time.
He felt elitism stifled creativity and music.
Orchestras weren’t racially diverse and
there was too much emphasis on becoming
a first chair. At the same time, children in
families with fewer resources don’t get
exposure to orchestras and don’t learn music
in school.
“He had a vision of music being accessible

children don’t have the ability and the talent—
it’s because they don’t have the opportunity. It
is too expensive.”
Like UpBeat NYC, the Washington Heights
and Inwood (WHIN) Music Project also had a
modest start. Less than two years ago, David
Gracia began the program after receiving an
Abreu Fellowship from the New England
Conservatory of Music. Today, he runs afterschool programs and
an orchestra, teaching about 125 Northern
Manhattan children music several times a
week.
He doesn’t yet have enough space or
resources for all of the children that would
like to participate. “Without a doubt, this is a
great place for a program like this to flourish,”
he said. He sees children who’ve never played
before get better very fast. “Kids see other
kids playing an instrument and they want to
play, too,” he said.
To that end, WHIN is experimenting with
a peer mentorship program. Children with
more experience team up with kids who are
just learning. “This builds leadership skills,”
Gracia said. “By doing that you not only
spread skills but you also build community.”
El Sistema programs are orchestra-based
and focus mainly on classical music. But
WHIN’s choir program incorporates gospel,
jazz and other types of music in many
different languages. Parents tell Gracia that their children’s
academic performance has improved since

music makes you smarter,” he said. “But

Lighting it up New film highlights celebration and controversy

1776 A new independent documentary about
fireworks is sparking controversy.
Filmmakers Jonathan Ullman and Led
Black chronicled Northern Manhattan’s most
explosive night—July 4th. Last summer, when they were working on
their feature length documentary, Nutcracker,
people told them to come back with their
cameras and capture something really
memorable. The next night they returned with
their film crew and let the cameras roll. The resulting 17-minute documentary,

premiered
at
District 12 this past Mon., Jun. 16th. It portrays Inwood, some might say, at its best
and/or its worst. The non-narrated film doesn’t take a point
of view. It merely captures the night as it
unfolds. “There’s nothing left on the cutting
room floor,” Ullman said.
Just like everywhere in America, it’s an
Independence Day party. Both young and
old are outside; playing music and dominoes,
grilling food, hanging with friends, just
waiting for the show to start. Residents say not everyone wants to
go downtown to see fireworks. They can
celebrate right in the neighborhood.
It’s not completely chaotic, notes one
observer. Each block takes turns setting them
off.
Two older Latina women say they love the
show. “Earlier I was watching it at home on
TV, the Macy’s,” one says. “And then I come

Un nuevo documental independiente sobre los
fuegos artificiales está provocando controversia.
Los cineastas Jonathan Ullman y Led Black
hacían una crónica de la noche más explosiva del
norte de Manhattan, el 4 de julio.

grandpa’s fireworks. They are high-grade
explosives that turn day into night. “It’s marvelous,” say the women in the
film. Is it legal?
No.
Is it dangerous?
Undoubtedly.
They’re lit by young adults, wearing shorts
and sandals with bare hands and Bic lighters. Intensity grows as night unfolds.
Fireworks get bigger, brighter, louder. At 2
a.m., it might seem to resemble a war zone.
Police cars patrol the streets but the officers
don’t get out until much later—and then only
to shoo people away from a fire. Even before it premiered, the film was
controversial. It set off a Facebook thread
where posters called the filmmakers “young
and naïve” and the film “romanticized”
illicit acts and was “presented from only one
perspective.”
Those people hadn’t even seen the film, say
Black and Ullman. “We were there to document and show our
experiences,” said Ullman. “I worked with
the material we got that night. We can’t go
back and re-shoot. There’s only one Fourth of
July a year. That was the story we got.”

schools are preparing to let
out for the summer, education
remains an important topic for
city residents, especially with
universal pre-kindergarten (UPK)
an essential part of Mayor Bill de
Blasio’s agenda.

in Manhattan.
Sponsored by the Center for Community
and Ethnic Media (CCEM) at the CUNY
Graduate School of Journalism, the
discussion gave community and ethnic media
outlets, including The Manhattan Times and
The Bronx Free Press, the opportunity for an
intimate discussion with Chancellor Fariña
and her colleagues.
During her remarks, the Schools Chancellor
stressed that the DOE was mindful of the
concerns of various ethnic communities and
invited attendees to provide her office with
feedback.

As announced on Tues., Jun. 3rd, the City is launching an online application process
to help parents find and apply for high-quality Community-Based Early Childhood
Centers (CBECCs) pre-K seats in their neighborhood. Even more programs and seats
will be made available in the weeks ahead.
“If you’ve ever had a child attend our public schools, then you know well the stress
of navigating all the programs to find the right fit. What we want every parent to
know is that come September, there will be more options than ever for high-quality,
full-day pre-K across the five boroughs. Whether your child is accepted to a public
school program this week or not, there are more options—both at community
facilities and at other public schools—to find the right fit,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Parents seeking a pre-K slot should take note of the following:
• This Thursday, the Department of Education will send notifications to parents
who applied for pre-K at public schools by the April 23rd deadline. Parents
will have until June 20th to register their child at a school to which they were
accepted.
• After June 20th, parents can apply in person at a public school for available
seats remaining or to place their child on a waitlist.
• Applications at CBECCs are open now and parents are encouraged to apply,
even if they have also applied to public school programs. The Department of
Education urges families to apply by June 26th to have the best chance of
finding the right program. Admissions remain open through October 1st.
• Additional seats at district schools, CBECCs, charter schools and parochial
institutions will be made available in the weeks ahead. The Department of
Education will notify parents about newly available seats in time to apply.
All pre-K programs at public schools and CBECCs are listed and mapped at nyc.
gov/prek, and additional information about each program is available through
the website. Online applications are now open for CBECCs.

Fariña also said that the value of UPK goes
far beyond education.
“Kids learn how to talk, play and share with
each other,” she explained.
“The sooner they learn to do that, the better
off they’ll be.”
To apply for a pre-k seat in a communitybased organization, which the DOE also refers
to as Community-Based Early Childhood
Centers (CBECC), families can fill out a
single application form and either submit it to
the organization or mail it to the DOE.
The application can also be submitted
online at schools.nyc.gov.
While open UPK seats are currently scarce
in the city’s public schools, Wallack said he
is urging families to apply
to the various CBECC
options.
“These are organizations
that you know and have
a reputation for serving
your communities,” he
commented.
“We’re building on a
foundation of comfort.”
Among the recently announced seats were
about 500 in Manhattan and 2,000 in the
Bronx.
Some areas of the city, such as the South
Bronx, benefited greatly from the CBECC
expansion.
For example, in the Mott Haven and Port
Morris neighborhoods, there are now 96 fullday UPK seats for every 100 four-year-olds, a
higher ratio than much of the city, according
to SchoolBook.org.

practice of hydraulic fracturing
or “hydrofracking.”
Fracking works by pumping a solution
of over 500 toxic chemicals into the
ground at high speeds to create fissures
in the ground. If allowed to occur, it will
cause irreversible damage to New York’s
environment and water supply. Fracking
has contaminated communities across the
country with carcinogens like benzene and
toluene, endocrine disrupters, and other
chemicals like mercury and diesel. Local
municipalities that initially embraced
fracking have come to regret the decision
after witnessing tap water in their homes
catch fire.

New exhibit explores Trujillo’s legacy

was elected President of the
Dominican Republic in 1930 with
more votes than actual voters.
Throughout his bloody 30-year reign,
his opponent—and, often, their entire
households—ended up missing or dead. “El Jefe” demanded total and complete
loyalty. Infractions, real or imagined, were
met with swift and brutal retaliation. He was
also known as “El Chivo,” or the Goat, for
his rapacious consumption of the island’s
resources, women and lives. The horned
image is also reminiscent of another mythic
and slightly more evil character.
Goats figure prominently in “Tyranny: A
Search for Dominican Identity.” The exhibit
at the Rio Penthouse Gallery contains 25
Dominican artists’ reflections on Trujillo’s
impact, which reverberated though the
Balaguer years until the present day.
“It’s a collective trauma that has never been
addressed publicly,” said artist Moses RosSuárez. “The idea is to bring this out, talk
about it so people can heal.”
The art is both political and personal.
Arguably, the show’s most striking image
is a photo of José Mesón, his bruised body
strapped to an electric chair and eyes wide

the country by photographer Pedro Aníbal
Fuentes Berg and his brother Gilberto,
revealed Trujillo’s atrocities to the world. The
Berg brothers were later arrested and never
heard from again.
The image has long haunted artist Diogenes Abreu. His installation features the
black-and-white photo on one wall with black
footsteps leading to another of Trujillo in full
military regalia. “[The image] affected me so much; it kept
popping up in my mind,” he said. When Abreu was in eighth grade everyone
in his school was arrested and taken to prisons
on trumped up charges. “It was very typical in
the 70’s, during the Balaguer regime, to put
students in jail. Being a youth was sort of like
a crime in the Dominican Republic,” he said.
“My fear was that these people were going
to do something similar to me,” he said.
One test during the Trujillo years of
whether or not people were Haitian and not
Dominican was the pronunciation of the word
“perejil,” or parsley. Miguel Luciano’s work, Red Parsley,
depicts the aftermath of the massive 1939
slaughter of Haitians. His multimedia piece
is a red-soaked painting of parsley with a
machete hanging in front. Narciso Polanco’s work commemorates
the time Trujillo was thought to have been
killed—10:15 pm. His image is sliced in half,
denoting that even in death, he is still present.
Another work depicts a “bakal,” a talisman
for protection, that he was reputed to carry. One story goes that three days before he died,
a fortune-teller told him he would be killed.
Trujillo brushed aside the prediction. “He
didn’t believe it,” Polanco said. “He said, ‘I’ll
die when I want to.’”
The murder of the Mirabel sisters is
also given its due. Puerto Rican artist Juan
Sánchez’s Butterfly is a collage of brightly
colored flying insects and a woman on cold
gray slab.
Ros-Suárez’s To Honor My Father and My
Mother is a heartfelt collage of family photos
arranged on a baseball home plate. His father
was involved in the resistance and was shot
and killed by the government. His mother
came to America. She didn’t know English

“Tyranny: A Search for Dominican Identity”,

T
here’s a new face in town.
Doña María Catalina de Urrutia was one of
the most well known women in Puerto Rico,
possibly the entire Caribbean.
Married to the Governor and Captain
General of the island and the daughter of a
prominent and wealthy Cuban family, she
was at the center of high society in 1788.
Now her portrait hangs in Washington
Heights, at the Hispanic Society of America.
The painting’s existence was only recently
discovered after the family brought it to a
Madrid art dealer for sale.
“It’s one of the prettiest things you’ve
ever seen in your life,” said Marcus Burke,
the Hispanic Society’s senior curator. “It’s
just an absolutely ravishingly beautiful
portrait of exquisite detail and hypnotic in its
presentation.” The history behind the painting is equally
fascinating. The artist, José Campeche y
Jordán, was the son of a freed black slave.
His father, Tomás de Rivafrecha
[Campeche] was a gilder, decorator and
painter and trained his son in music and artist.
But Campeche’s gifts deepened in 1775
when Luis Paret y Alcázar arrived in Puerto
Rico.
Paret was a master painter in the French
Rococo style. He worked in the court of

ay una nueva cara en el pueblo.
Doña María Catalina de Urrutia fue una de
las mujeres más conocidas en Puerto Rico,
posiblemente de todo el Caribe. Casada con el
Gobernador y Capitán General de la isla, e hija
de una familia cubana prominente y adinerada,
estuvo en el centro de la alta sociedad en 1788.
Ahora su retrato cuelga en Washington
Heights, en la Hispanic Society of America.
La existencia de la pintura fue descubierta
recientemente después de que la familia la
llevara a un comerciante de arte de Madrid para
venderla.
“Es una de las cosas más bonitas que jamás

Letting Kids Build

t’s the first-ever event of its kind—the Sculpture Crawl!
On Saturday, June 21st, Scribble Art Workshop will display
the work of local youth artists in Inwood Hill Park and in the
Dyckman Farmhouse Museum.
She said it was a stop station—“like
the ones they have in car races”—for the
future. “The cars fly in through here, and
then leave through there,” she explained
further. Her eyes were wide as she spoke
and offered even more details on all the cool
functions her masterpiece could handle.
She’d only been attending woodworking
class at Scribble Art Workshop for only a
few weeks. It was a definite surprise that
she had managed to nail and glue most
of the pieces, despite struggles to get the
hammer to remain straight. And she had
learned how to paint on wood and create
some cool designs. She also finally knew
how to use power tools.
But most importantly for my daughter, I
think, was that now she knew how to build. Since then, she’s built a musical
instrument, has truly mastered the hammer,
and doesn’t scare easily at the sound of
loud tools. She’s also worked with her
classmates on a collective sculpture her
instructor had designed.
The final product uses her new
favorite material – wood – and a type of
photosynthesis chemical that, depending on
the lighting, gives the sculpture a different
look nearly each time.
“The teacher had to let it sit in the dark,”
Sasha Schwartz, Scribble Art Workshop’s
founder and program director. “The kids
worked on them and then she put it away
so no light fell on them.” Sounds very cool.
Though if you ask my daughter, she’ll
tell you the best part was finally getting a
chance to use the staple gun.
Whatever the cause of their excitement,
your children are also bound to be
enthusiastic about getting to work with
their hands. If you’re thinking about ways
to encourage your kids to build, here are a
few ideas.
• Do your research. Head to the library
or look it up online. Take the time to
learn more about some of the best
sculptors, such as Michelangelo,
Auguste Rodin, and Donatello. Share
interesting tidbits with your children
about each artist.
• Challenge your children to draw and
design their masterpieces on paper first
and help them determine what they’ll
need to make it happen. Then ask them
questions about dimensions, colors,
shapes.
• Practice molding and sculpting with
putty, clay or even Play-doh. Be silly, be
serious. You can take your time and
create exquisitely detailed pieces with
your child or create a series of pod
people made from blue and green Play10
doh. Just have fun.
• Finally, come out to see others’
best efforts. Join the Sculpture Scrawl on
Saturday, June 21st at Inwood Hill Park
and at the Dyckman Farmhouse Museum.

We can often forget how much our children
already know, and how important it is to let
them explore their seemingly zany ideas and
inventions. It’s more than just providing them
with a crayon and construction paper.
“A huge goal,” Schwartz added, “is
changing the perception of what kids are
capable of creating.”

junio, el taller de arte Scribble mostrará el trabajo de artistas jóvenes

Ella dijo que era una estación
“como las que tienen en las carreras
de coches” pero del futuro. “Los
coches vuelan por aquí, y luego salen por ahí”,
explicó. Sus ojos estaban muy abiertos mientras
hablaba, y ofrecía aún más detalles sobre todas
las geniales funciones que su obra maestra podía
manejar. Sólo había asistido a las clases de
carpintería en el taller de arte Scribble durante
unas pocas semanas. Fue, definitivamente, una
sorpresa que lograra clavar y pegar la mayoría de
las piezas, a pesar de las luchas para conseguir
que el martillo permaneciera derecho. Aprendió
a pintar la madera y a crear algunos diseños
geniales. Ella también, finalmente, supo cómo
usar las herramientas eléctricas.
Pero lo más importante para mi hija, creo, fue
que aprendió a construir.
Desde entonces, ha construido un instrumento
musical, ha dominado realmente el martillo y

oscuridad”, dijo Sasha Schwartz, fundadora del

Suena muy bien, aunque si le preguntas a mi hija,

Starting small to finish big

E
very journey starts with one
small step.
On Wed., Jun., 11th, EmblemHealth kicked
off its city-wide “Small Steps” campaign
in Harlem at the Adam Clayton Powell Jr.
State Office Building.
The Small Steps campaign is a neighborhood
-by-neighborhood campaign encouraging
residents to live healthier by taking small
steps one day at a time.
“I believe that we should never stop
taking small steps,” said David Flemister,
EmblemHealth’s Director of Brand Strategy
and Community Marketing. “Taking smalls
steps can make us a healthier community.”
The concept allows for residents to take
an active role in improving and maintaining
wellness one small decision at a time rather
than overwhelming participants with largescale commitments.
Hundreds gathered around various
EmblemHealth mobile units offering
information on the organization’s wellness
initiatives and its free health services.
Basketball, bicycles and other fitness
activities were featured alongside a large
outdoor Zumba class. Music was provided by
Power 105.1’s DJ WhutEvva.

Impermanent and precious in the park

ysterious signs beckon
visitors deeper and deeper
in to a glittering forest. A bearded
man talks with a hunchback
dolphin. Goddesses float in trees.
Nature has transformed into a gallery. The
third annual Ephemeral Arts Project is on
display at Sherman Creek and Swindler Cove
this June.
Part of the Northern Manhattan Arts
Alliance Uptown Arts Stroll, both new and
established uptown artists showcase the
beauty of nature alongside their own work. Nearly 40 children from Scribble Art
Workshop have created a wondrous village of
clay figurines living small structures made of
twigs and leaves. Lilliputian inhabits a tree in
The Children’s Garden.
“We chose that tree because it’s shorter,”
explained Kelly Baldwin, Studio Manager at
Scribble Art Workshop, which spearheaded
the project. “The branches droop down and
it’s eye level for kids. Adults walk right by it
unless you know where it is.”
Residents made of include a chubby
baker, a snail with legs and a violin monster,
complete with his own bow and rosin. “Each of the characters has [his or her] own
back story,” said Sasha Schwartz, Scribble
Arts Founder. “It was totally natural,” added Baldwin.
“The children had these stories in their head
as they were producing these things.”
While some children created the figurines,
others collected fallen materials from Inwood
parks and made their houses. There was much
consideration of balance, placement and
which characters would live with each other.
“It was kind of a conversation between the
classes,” said Baldwin.
John Cinchon’s art encourages a
conversation between the viewer and the
park, a seven-letter invitation to roam
deeper. EXPLORE is a series composed of
photo collages and printed on metal, placed
strategically around the park. “It’s a graphic experiment,” Cinchon said.
“I wanted to make it more of an exploration
without making it too redundant.”
Instead of imposing his own creative vision
on the park, he allowed the park’s beauty to
influence him.
“The site is important,” he said. “It helps
me come up with ideas.” Cinchon spent time
photographing the flora and fauna and made
a collage, juxtaposing flowers and other
images to look like letters, spelling out the
word “explore” in seven different images.
He printed the results on aluminum and hung
them in different areas, a kind of metallic
word jumble.
“I like the idea that people would come
across it unexpectedly,” he said. “They would
go find them and figure out what the letters
are.”

market opens

O
ther boroughs rely on trees
growing within.
In the Bronx, it’s an entire farmers
market.
Business was booming at the latest green
oasis to have sprung up in the borough this
past Sat., Jun. 14th.
Located on 138th Street between Willis
and Alexander Avenues, the market was
founded by Roseanne Placencia and Lily
Kesselman. The duo were committed to
livening up what amounted to a food desert
with little access to fresh produce—despite
being next door to the Hunts Point Terminal
Market, where thousands of pounds of food
are shipped every day.
The market was started with a $3,000
grant from the Citizen’s Committee of New
York, and is run by City Farms Markets,
a network of community-run farmers
markets.
Among some of the visitors on Saturday
were City Council Speaker Melissa MarkViverito and Bronx-born celebrity chef
Baron Ambrosia, as well as Gardenia
Vizcaino.
Vizcaino was happy to find some nettle
tea and parsley.
Nettle tea is said by some to be helpful
for diabetics, so Vizcaino, who is prediabetic, wanted to give it a try.
Vizcaino said the market, with its fresh
herbs and vegetables, was a welcome sight
in the community.
“Here many people are sick, and this
helps,” she said.

Mili Bonilla, who lives in Parkchester,
found out about the market on Twitter and
came prepared with a reusable bag.
She said the produce at her local grocery
store is below satisfactory.
“Their produce, it’s the worst. It just looks
like the rejects that have been sent our way,”
she said.
“I was going to get some kale. You can’t
find good kale at the supermarket.”
She said she is happy to know that she
would no longer need to travel all the way to
Union Square for fresh, local produce.
The South Bronx Farmers Market debuted
with three booths, but organizers expect
it to grow throughout the summer, and
there are plans to include produce from the
neighborhood’s own local farm, La Finca del
Sur.
Wassaic Community Farms was one of the
vendors on site on Saturday, and its team was
caught off guard by the huge demand for local
produce.
“It was successful; we should have packed
more,” said Tender Tompkins, an intern
working with the farm.
“It’s huge to have something fresh in this
neighborhood,” said Yajaira Saavedra, who
sold hibiscus tea at the market.
Saavedra’s family owns the nearby
Casa Morada, which is well known for its
chilaquiles and other Mexican specialties. But
at the market Saavedra wanted to highlight
the healthier offerings of her national cuisine.
The hibiscus tea, for instance, was
sweetened with Agave instead of sugar. Next
week, they want to add guacamole to the
menu.
Having grown up in the Bronx, founder
Placencia experienced the shortage of fresh
produce firsthand.

When she decided to be a vegetarian, she
would need to take trips to upstate farms
for vegetables and fruits. Those excursions
opened her eyes.
“I knew there was a difference,” she said.
“But once I knew there were options, I
realized that what we have here is ludicrous.”
Kesselman agreed.
“There’s a big need for fresh food here. The
food goes to Hunts Point, yet you can’t get
farm fresh food in the neighborhood.”
Kesselman remembered people’s reactions
when she put up flyers for the market.
“Everyone said, ‘Finally! We need this.’”
The demand was evident.
Shortly after noon, Wassaic Community
Farms sold out of radishes, Swiss chard,
burdock root and kale, and their mint,
sassafras and burdock teas were gone too.
The highest demand was for the burdock
root tea, which tastes mildly earthy. The tea is
said to stabilize blood sugars.
“More people are buying it here for its
health benefits,” said Ben Schwartz, who runs
Wassaic Community Farms.
It was definitely for such advantages that
Oda Jiberto had loaded up on parsley and
chives, both alkaline vegetables intended to
help with her eczema.
“It works!” she declared. “Now I need
many vegetables.”

said Mili Bonilla.
Jilberto said she was glad she did not
have to go to Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s
like she normally does.
Not all merchandise was edible—yet.
Also on sale were a number of plants,
including tomato and eggplant.
Luis Méndez grabbed four tomato plants
before heading to work on the subway.
He lives nearby with his girlfriend and
their apartment has a plot of land.
Méndez used to grow tomatoes in his
yard in his native Boston.
“Hopefully we’ll get some good tomatoes
this year,” he said.

Take the 6 Train to 3rd Avenue/138th
Street, the first stop on the 6 train heading
into the Bronx from Manhattan. Exit
the train at Alexander Avenue (the east
entrance) and the market is across the

“I think that’s a really cool way to
experience the park,” said Jordan Dyniewski,
New York Restoration Project’s Director of
Public Events. “We are always focused as an environmental
organization on showcasing the natural
landscape,” he said. “We’re fortunate enough
to have artists that understand that.”
One of the main themes of the Ephemeral
Art Project was bringing different
environmental themes to light, as is executed
in Kirsten Compitello’s Habitat and Mariel
Santana’s Hive Fracture. Dyniewski said that some artists used
things found in the park or floating in the
river. “They take those objects and make them
into art—which I think is a very special way
to transform things we would normally call
trash.”
In Lillith and Her Sisters, Andrea Arroyo
painted on plastic mesh. She found it, already
used, at Materials for the Arts. She explained that she normally would
never consider using plastic. It’s too industrial
for her tastes, and at first glance wouldn’t fit in
a natural setting. “It’s the complete opposite
of what I like,” she said.
Yet the material proved to be very
generous. It held the paint in a different way
than canvas, and made mistakes beautiful.
Its mesh structure allowed the wind to flow
through, creating undulating goddesses. “It
gave me a lot of freedom,” she said.
Freedom is appropriate for a tribute to
goddesses known for independent spirit.
According to some Jewish folklore, Lillith is
the first woman, Adam’s consort before Eve.
She is accompanied by her ancient Mayan,

Paret had a sense of humor about
banishment. In a self-portrait during time, he
depicted himself as a banana picker. Yet in 1775, Puerto Rico had a sophisticated
society. Along with Cuba, it was Spain’s
military stronghold in the Caribbean. Bitter
enemies with Great Britain, Spain supported
the Colonies and fought against the British
during the Revolution. Spanish efforts lead to
a crucial British defeat, which in turn allowed
Gen. George Washington to fight a smaller
army.
The painting is part of that history.
“We’re looking through a window at a
society that was sympathetic to our needs as a
young nation,” said Burke.
Paret taught Campeche his technique. Paret
returned to Spain only three years later but the
pupil learned quickly from the master. By the
time Campeche painted Doña María in 1788,
he was in full command of the Rococo style
that was in vogue all over Europe and the
U.S. He was a master painter in his own right,
painting the prominent people of the day as
well as religious images. “You can see the relationship,” said Burke.
“It’s really the brushwork that makes it quite
clear and the wonderful sense of small detail.
It’s very rich.”
Doña María is dressed in 18th Century
high fashion—in a gown comparable Goya’s
portrait of the Duchess of Osuna, painted
just two years earlier. Marie Antoinette was
depicted wearing a similar costume two years
before that. Doña María wears her best diamonds on
a black silk cord around her neck and both
wrists sport watches set to the same time—
following the styles of the day.
But the most striking thing about the
portrait is the hair—a large beehive pulled
back from the face, piled high atop the crown
of the head, all portrayed with extremely fine
brushwork. “The whole painting is a symphony of
lavenders, pinks and grays that are extremely
common in the Rococo sensibility,” Burke
said. “It really is absolutely of the age.”

main salon of La Fortaleza, the Governor’s
palace in San Juan. She was 39 at the time
and probably already had the fourth or fifth of
her nine children.
It’s difficult to extract any of Doña María’s
interior life from the work. “It’s a formal
portrait. She’s the wife of the most important
man in town,” said Burke. “Her role is the
gracious, welcoming but very upper class
wife of the governor and captain general of

Empire.”
Campeche also painted a later portrait of
Doña María with one of her sons which now
hangs in Ponce. A portrait by the same painter
of her husband, Colonel Juan Andrés Dabán y

Her older daughter now tries to learn things

Mike Fitelson, United Palace of Cultural
Arts’ Director of Programming, said these six
youth orchestras will rock the Palace on June
28th. Two years ago, UPCA launched
programming
with
youth-oriented
programs—including the Harmony Project
and WHIN. “This seems like a natural progression,”
he said. “We’ll take our two youth orchestras
and add four others and show the world
what these kids are learning—and how it’s
changing their lives.”
The Mejia family is excited about playing
the Palace, too.
“We are really looking forward to the
concert—especially in a place like this,” he
said.

NYC es un programa basado en El Sistema. El
Sistema se originó en Venezuela, su principio
básico es que cuando los niños son introducidos
a la música, la sociedad no sólo tiene mejores
músicos, sino también una mejor sociedad.
Liza Austria, co-fundadora de UpBeat, dijo
que su programa en el Bronx ha despegado este
año. Tienen un total de 110 alumnos, tanto en los
programas de orquesta y de pre-orquesta. Los
niños han realizado muchas presentaciones, han
viajado a otros condados, y han conocido a otros
jóvenes músicos.
“Lo emocionante de esto es que muchos
chicos no necesariamente salen de su vecindario
en el Bronx”, dijo. “Así que ven a otros niños
haciendo lo mismo. En nuestro barrio no hay otra
orquesta. No conocen a otros niños que hagan
esto”.
UpBeat NYC es en gran medida un asunto
familiar. Austria, junto con su madre, hermano y
esposo, manejan el programa. Ellos tomaron la
inspiración de su difunto padre, Jaime Austria. Un
bajista de las mejores orquestas de Nueva York,
estaba entusiasmado con los programas de El
Sistema y hablaba de ello todo el tiempo.
Sentía que el elitismo reprimía la creatividad
y la música. Las orquestas no eran racialmente
diversas y no había demasiado énfasis en
convertirse en los mejores músicos. Al mismo
tiempo, los niños de las familias con menos
recursos no tenían exposición a las orquestas y
no aprendían música en la escuela.
“Tenía una visión de que la música debía ser
accesible a todo el mundo”, dijo Austria. “No es

talento, es porque no tienen la oportunidad. Es
demasiado caro”.
Como UpBeat NYC, Music Project de
Washington Heights e Inwood (WHIN) también
tuvo un modesto inicio. Hace menos de dos años,
David Gracia comenzó el programa después
de recibir una beca Abreu del New England
Conservatory of Music.

Los programas que conforman El Sistema

principalmente en la música clásica. El programa
de coro de WHIN incorpora góspel, jazz y otros

académico de sus hijos ha mejorado desde que
están tomando clases de música. “No es porque
la música te haga más inteligente”, dijo. “Sino

year. It’s an honest portrayal of how people
live and celebrate in the United States.”
“Did our founding fathers envision that our
Fourth would be celebrated like this? Maybe
not,” Ullman said. But he thinks they would
understand the celebrants’ fervor and desire
for freedom.
Others at the premier said fireworks are set
off all over the country on the Fourth. “This is
just one neighborhood’s manifestation,” said
one Washington Heights resident. “I used to
have bottle rocket wars as kid in Cincinnati.”
Jose Salcedo grew up on 181st and Cabrini.
“Fireworks brought the family together,” he
said. “You went to barbecues and fireworks
were at the end of the night—to cap off a great
moment in our culture.”

Initiatives (FYI) Summer of Service Day
Camp 2014. Registration will close Mon.,
Jun. 30th. FYI offers a summer camp for boys
and girls 10 to 13 years old that offers campers
hands-on community service activities,
enrichment trips, arts and crafts, sports and
recreation, and other activities all around the

Gap,” an academic support element to help
