Multicultural Festival… Paint a Shocking
Picture of Addiction
Passports Included
The Oxnard Multicultural
Festival, scheduled for Saturday,
October 5, 2013 at Historic
Downtown Plaza Park, is proud
to welcome back the ever
popular International Booths.
It all begins at the International
Info Center located next to the
pagoda at Plaza Park. Pick up the
free passport and then travel the
world by visiting each of the
assigned booths around the park.
Each stop allows visitors to
interact with festival volunteers
as they share details about their
culture through music, dance,
customs, and more. Be sure to
According to Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor Derry Hallmark, the possible outcomes for the millions of addicted people in the country are prison, sobriety or death.
have your passport stamped at
each booth and return it to the
Info Center for a free prize.
"Every year the International
Booths are the highlight of our
festival because it gives our
community the opportunity to
learn about other cultures in a
fun and educational way,” said
Yadira Viveros, a member of the
festival’s planning committee.
International Booths scheduled
to participate this year include
Chile, Spain, Bolivia, Scotland,
Puerto Rico, China, Hawaii,
Colombia, Japan, Vietnam,
Guatemala, Panama, Jamaica,
Philippines, Mexico, the state of
Michoacán in Mexico, and the
Near East Multicultural Arts
Association. Scheduled booths
are subject to change without
prior notice.
“What is most amazing to me
is to see kids and their parents
participating together in our
passport activity,” Viveros said.
“It’s a wonderful bonding
experience for families,” she
added.
The Oxnard Multicultural
Festival will take place from
10am to 6pm. The event is free
and there is no cost for parking.

This leaves 20 million untreated
addicts struggling with their
problem every day.
"For these millions of addicted
people, there are three possible
outcomes," said Derry Hallmark,
Director of Admissions and Certified Chemical Dependency
Counselor at Narconon Arrowhead. "Those outcomes are
prison, sobriety or death."
Narconon Arrowhead is one of
the country's leading drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers in
Canadian, Oklahoma.
"For those of us at Narconon,
the job is to ensure that as many
people as possible achieve lifetime sobriety with our unique
eight-phase rehabilitation program. Working on this problem
since 1966, we've found effective, drug-free methods of eliminating the cravings, guilt and depression that keep people
trapped in addiction," Hallmark
said.
"Added to that is our education
program that we take into companies and schools around the
country," Mr. Hallmark added.
"We are dedicated to helping
build a better future for every
American by restoring addicts to
an enjoyable, productive life."
To find immediate help for
someone who is having a problem with drugs or alcohol, contact Narconon's free addiction
consultation and referral helpline
at 1-800-468-6933 or visit their
website
at

The Narconon program was
founded in 1966 by William
Benitez in Arizona State prison,
and is based on the humanitarian works of L. Ron Hubbard.
In more than 120 centers around
the world, Narconon programs
restore drug and alcohol abusers
and addicts to a clean and sober
lifestyle.

Angela Glover Blackwell, founder and CEO of PolicyLink.
More than 300 elected officials, business leaders, community advocates, educators and supporters gathered Friday in Ventura's Crowne Plaza Hotel for the
seventh annual Community Building Luncheon, a gathering centered on growing a just and sustainable economy for the Central Coast region.
The event was hosted by the Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable
Economy, or CAUSE, a nonprofit organization focussed on building grassroots
power to realize social, economic and environmental justice through policy
research, leadership development, organizing and advocacy.
Dr. Sonali Kolhatkar, host and executive producer of Pacifica Radio KPFK's
Uprising, served as master of ceremonies. Kolhatkar has covered issues in global and local news, and interviewed luminaries such as Noam Chomsky and
Dolores Huerta, among many others.
Angela Glover Blackwell, founder and CEO of PolicyLink, a national research and action institute advancing economic and social equity, was the event's
keynote speaker.
According to Blackwell, the key to the country's economic stability is revitalizing and securing the middle class, a declining and fragile segment.
"In California, poverty rates continue to soar in the aftermath of the Great
Recession," Blackwell said, adding that the once strong and stable middle class
is rapidly shrinking and now, more than ever, strengthening and securing this
important sector is vital to the country's economic prosperity.
Blackwell said CAUSE and PolicyLink share many core beliefs, including all
people deserve access to good jobs, housing, and services. They also share the
value of participation of all for sustainable solutions.
"We're all in this together," CAUSE Deputy Executive Director Maricela Morales said, highlighting the importance of working collectively to ensure our
economic future.
Blackwell, an advocate for social equity, discussed the link between social
inequality and economic uncertainty, and focussed on providing ways to reduce the gap between the wealthy and those living in poverty, a great majority
of those affected being nonwhite.
"Those most affected by the economic downturn are people of color," Blackwell
said, stating 23.6% of Latinos and 24.2% of African Americans in California
live in poverty, while the poverty rates of Asians and Whites are only 12.6%
and 9.8%, respectively.
According to Blackwell, 34.1% of the work force ages 25-64 are people of
color, and 33.2% of the employed people ages 25-64 are also people of color.
"The key is the economy, but the key to a good economy is a good education
system," said State Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson, D-Santa Barbara, who attended
the event.
"In California, 73% of all children under 18 years old are of color,” said
Blackwell to VIDA Newspaper, emphasizing the importance of achieving social equity in the country’s educational system.
While the statistics in California and across the country are dire, Blackwell is
optimistic ensuring proper access to jobs, affordable housing, and quality education will lead to a prosperous future.
"If inequality was among the factors that got us into the crisis, dealing with
inequality may be one of the steps to getting out of it," Blackwell said.

problema", dijo Blackwell.

As part of a national preparedness campaign, Rep. Lois Capps

Last week, Zaragoza and Ventura County Public Health Dr.

According to Zaragoza, Ventura

Evite El Sufrimiento: Póngase La Vacuna Contra La Influenza

Aguilar procedió a

proporcionar asistencia a alguien
