Earth Day celebrates
a milestone
By David Goldstein
n
- Earth Day is celebrating its
.45th anniversary on April 22.
oWhat started in 1970 in the U.S.
and was observed by 20 million
speople, has grown to a movement
-involving 192 countries and 200
-million people worldwide. Earth
Day emerged as a response to
.out-of-control pollution of our air,
water and land. Anyone living in
.Southern California back then can
recall the damage from the Santa
Barbara oil spill, or the harsh air
that blanketed the area, making
ait difficult to breathe. Litter was a
,common sight along highways, and
epretty much anywhere else where
there were people.
We’ve come a long way since the
first Earth Day. Gone are the smog
ealerts that used to keep students
indoors at school. The air is visibly cleaner, and through recycling
policies and local efforts such as
street sweeping, the amount of
alittler in the environment is down
despite a growing population.

Earth Day is celebrating its 45th anniversary on April 22 and it will be celebrated in 192 countries.

According to the EPA, new cars,
SUVs and pickup trucks run 99
percent cleaner than their 1970
counterparts. Pollutants that were
common in the air in 1970 have
dropped an average of 72 percent
even as the gross domestic product
rose by 219 percent.
While there is a lot to celebrate,
it is important to use Earth Day
as a reminder to take care of the
world. One area we always need
to focus on are Ventura County’s
watersheds. These are the rivers,
creeks and wetlands that receive
water runoff from the open space
in the mountains, but also from
the city networks of gutters, pipes
and open channels. The ultimate
destination is the ocean.
Your help is still needed to keep
our rivers and the ocean free of
pollutants. Keep trash, pet waste,
fertilizer, household chemicals,
car fluids, yard waste and sprinkler
runoff out of street gutters. All
gutters eventually lead to a natural
creek or the ocean. Pollution that
enters our gutters can not only
affect the health of swimmers, but
can greatly diminish the natural
resources needed for wildlife that
call our wetlands and ocean home.
Attend an Earth Day festival in
your city. These events will have
interactive activities for kids, adults
and families; educational exhibits;
compost workshops; tree, plant and
compost giveaways; gray water
workshops; green-friendly vendors; and sustainable vehicles on
display. It is a good way to learn
about new ways to help the earth.
Here is a list of some of Ventura
County’s Earth Day events. All
have free admission.

The truth can’t be Maricela Morales as new
trusted or, the liar Executive Director of CAUSE
By John Suarez
Reaching back to the Golden
Age of theater in Spain, the Teatro
de la Americas boldly tackles The
Truth Can’t Be Trusted. It is an
established classic by Juan Ruiz
de Alarcon (1581 -1639), one of
the great playwrights of the time,
who was born in Mexico but did
most of his writing in Spain. This
play served as the model for the
first great French comedy of the
modern era, The Liar.
The plot starts simply enough.
Don Beltran (Elixeo Flores), a
wealthy aristiocrat, summons
back to Madrid his only surviving son, Don Garcia (Marqus
Williams), from his studies in
Salamanca. He wants the “boy”
to experience first hand the complexities of life in the big city. But
there is a “little” problem. The
youth is a compulsive liar. Distressed by this finding, the father
concludes that the best antidote
for this immature trait is to get the
son married ASAP.
The father, along with everyone
else, underestimates Don Garcia’s proclivity to get by through
deception and tall tales. He is so
charming, bright and imaginative,
that he manages to fool everyone,

at least for the moment. As he
sinks deeper in the quicksand
of his lies, he turns to more lies,
only complicating the situation.
From the point of view of the
audience, the question becomes
how this hopeless mess will ever
be resolved. Come and find out.
The playwright is masterful
(and funny) in his two person
interactions, and the exchanges
between Don Garcia and his
manservant (Waldo Figueroa),
his love interest Jacinta (Kate
Lottmann), and his rival Don Juan
(Nic Hobbs) are well staged and
performed. The relatively long
play, typical of the period, moves
briskly under the watchful eye
of director Robert Sanchez. The
play is performed in English,
with Spanish supertitles, using a
translation by Dakin Matthews
that successfully captures both the
poetry and the humor originally
conceived by the author.
The Truth Can’t Be Trusted
is presented at the Black Box
Theater, Oxnard College, 4000
S. Rose Avenue, Oxnard, CA. It
plays on April 9, 10, 11, 12, 16 and
17. Curtain is at 8PM, except for
5PM on Sunday, April 12. Tickets
are $25 (VIP), $15 (General), $10
(Seniors, Students, Military), and
$5 (Oxnard College Students).

NOTICE - In accordance with subdi-
CAUSE, a nonprofit social
justice organization that covers
Ventura and Santa Barbara
Counties, announced that after
14 years of service, founding
Executive Director Marcos
Vargas will be leaving in June
to become the new Executive
Director of the Fund for Santa Barbara, a Santa Barbara
County progressive community
foundation.
Marcos Vargas founded
CAUSE in 2001 from the Ventura County Living Wage Coalition, which passed a series of
local ordinances raising wages
for workers whose employers
contracted with the City of
Ventura, City of Oxnard, City
of Port Hueneme and County of
Ventura. Under Vargas’ leadership CAUSE grew from a small
research and policy advocacy
center into a powerful force
for social, economic and environmental justice in the region.
During his tenure, CAUSE
became known for leading
a successful effort to protect
the voice of underrepresented
communities in the redistricting
process for county, state and
federal representatives, and
alongside local allies defeating
the largest mining company in the
world to stop a proposed liquefied
natural gas terminal off the coast
of Oxnard that would have been
the largest source of pollution in
the region.
Although CAUSE began in
Ventura County, two years ago
Vargas carried out a merger between CAUSE and its Santa
Barbara County based sister organization PUEBLO, to ensure the
continuation of over a decade of
work to raise wages, expand public transit, protect renters, defend
immigrants’ rights and improve
environmental sustainability in
Santa Barbara County.
“I’m honored to join the Fund
for Santa Barbara team,” said
Vargas, “and proud to continue to
carry out the decades of positive
change the Fund has brought to
Santa Barbara County through
tackling the root causes of our
community’s social, economic,
environmental and political challenges.”
Founded in 1980, the Fund for
Santa Barbara has long been a
vital institution providing technical support and financial sustainability for CAUSE and other
grassroots nonprofit organizations
in the region.
Vargas’ successor is Maricela Morales, co-founder of
CAUSE who has served since
its inception as Associate Executive Director, working closely
alongside Vargas. The daughter
of immigrant parents, Morales
was raised in Ventura County, attended Fillmore public
schools and went on to complete
a BA from Stanford University
and MA from Pacifica Graduate
Institute. Morales served as the
first Latina city councilmember
and mayor of Port Hueneme.
“Here at CAUSE we can’t
thank Marcos enough for his
many years of service,” said
Morales. “I’m proud of the
work we’ve done together to
build a regional organization to
advance social, economic and
environmental justice and honored to be continuing this work
in our community.”
“I wouldn’t consider this transition if I wasn’t 100% confident
in the incredible leadership team
of board, staff and community
leaders we’ve built over the
years,” said Vargas. “Maricela is a visionary and strategic
mind, a passionate voice for the
people of the Central Coast, and
a dynamic force for change.”

Restricciones obligatorias
gobernador mientras invitaba a

Williams), a regresar a Madrid
de Salamanca donde está estudiando. Quiere que el joven sea
expuesto a la vida compleja de la
ciudad grande. Pero hay un problemita. El hijo es un mentiroso
compulsivo.
Avenue. Habrán actuaciones de
jueves a sábado abril 9, 10, 11,
Boletos a
$25 (Asientos Reservados), $15
(Entrada General), $10 (tercera
edad, estudiantes y ejercito), y

dispuestos a sobornar o engañar

Tarde o temprano tú haces y luego
te la van a hacer a ti", agregó.
El grupo mexicano concedió

futuro lanzamiento de su nuevo
disco, "Cama incendiada", que
saldrá a la venta el próximo 21
de abril.
