Making a Difference for WMCC: Chris Pearl
It began with a golf-themed idea shared
between bowling buddies. Seven years later,
it has become a local man’s passion and
raised thousands of dollars for WMCC while
honoring the memory of a cancer-stricken
friend.
Kalamazoo’s Chris Pearl will spend the next
five months, fully immersed in planning and
organizing the 7th Annual Wendy Hotrum
Memorial Golf Outing. “I look forward to it
every year”, said Pearl. “I’m happy to do
it and it’s created a lot of friendships as a
result”.
Pearl met Wendy Hotrum through her
husband, Shawn, during a Saturday night
bowling league. After Wendy passed away
from breast cancer in 2008, Pearl and a small
group of friends gathered to discuss how
they could help their newly widowed friend
and honor his wife’s memory. “Cancer affects
everyone and we’ve all lost someone”, said
Pearl. “We talked about what we could do to
give back and I suggested putting together a
golf outing”.
Pearl got to work immediately. The first
outing, held in the summer of 2009, drew
32 golfers and raised around $1,500 for the
WMCC Patient Care Services Program. And,
there was a surprise bonus. “I found out
that my employer, Walmart, had a program
called Volunteerism Always Pays (VAP) which
awards grants to eligible organizations where
associates volunteer”, said Pearl. “Through
my volunteer efforts on the golf outing, I was
able to direct even more money to WMCC”.
The golf outing has grown in size each year,
both in participation and money raised, and
Pearl continues to receive $750 in awards
annually from Walmart to add to the bottom
line. “We now host 84 golfers and we’re up
to $6,000 in revenue”,
according to Pearl.
How does he do it?
Pearl says there are
Chris Pearl
no shortcuts, just
many months of hard work, dedication and
a passion for the cause. “It’s a labor of love.
I start pounding the pavement for donations
in February”, he said. “We raffle and offer
through silent auction around 200 items with
values ranging from $15 to $200 each. That’s
a big draw. Also, our golf course partner,
Eastern Hills, gives us a tremendous deal so
that more money can go to WMCC”.
The 7th Annual Wendy Hotrum Memorial
Golf Outing will be held on Saturday, July 25,
2015 at Eastern Hills Golf Club in Kalamazoo.

A More Comfortable Visit for Your Caregiver
During the past year, we trialed a variety of
visitor chairs and asked for guests’ input.
After listening to all the comments and
reading the reviews, we selected the two
most popular chairs.
The black chair with the blue seat has a
height adjustment to accommodate short and
tall people. It also has adjustable armrests
and a breathable, mesh tilt backrest.
Visitors tell us it is an excellent chair—very
comfortable and relaxing.
The tan chair with the green seat has a very
comfortable mesh, flex back. Guests report
that it offers a nice combination of support
and comfort.
We hope you enjoy the new chairs.
This Pooch Can Heel and Heal
Perhaps you’ve heard of Lobo. Not the
comic book character. Or the musician
who sang, “Me and You and a Dog Named
Boo” in the 70s”. But, you are getting
warmer. The Lobo we’ve come to love is a

speeds of up to 45 miles per hour. “Lobo,
in his best quarter-mile race, clocked a
time of 31 seconds”, says Bohm. “During
the 43rd race of his career, he broke his leg
and was immediately retired”.
Seven year old Lobo got into the
business of healing—otherwise
known as pet therapy—after
being adopted by Connie Bohm.
Bohm, diagnosed with multiple
myeloma five years ago, wanted
to share Lobo with others because
of his extraordinary disposition.

When asked if she recalls any unique
moments between Lobo and
patients here, Bohm is quick
to respond. “One day I walked
over to a patient who asked if
she could pet Lobo. While she
was stroking Lobo’s head, she
received a cell phone call from her
husband and suddenly burst into
tears. She learned at that moment
that her own dog had to be put to
sleep during an emergency visit to
the veterinarian’s office. She just

and I’ll never forget it”.

Bohm, too. She just celebrated
her fifth year of survival since receiving
her diagnosis. In addition to her volunteer
duties alongside Lobo, Bohm—a retired
high school art teacher—donates her time
for the Depression and Bipolar Support
Alliance in Portage where she leads a
support group. It turns out this woman and
her best friend have both made healing
their mission.

Quality Matters

Your Opinions Count
We appreciate the feedback you’ve provided through our
patient satisfaction surveys. We review your feedback
monthly and continue to implement improvements based
on your advice. If you, your caregivers and/or family
members have comments you’d like to share and you’ve
not received a survey, please feel free to speak to any team
member. Thank you.
Breast Program Reaccreditation
In January, we had our on-site review for the National
Accreditation Program of Breast Centers (NAPBC)
reaccreditation. The site surveyor was impressed with
our multidisciplinary breast program. He had wonderful
things to say about how we take excellent care of breast
cancer patients in our community. He will recommend
reaccreditation for three years which is contingent
upon a review by the NAPBC central office. Our onsite
review was made possible by the dedication of several
community members including but not limited to the
NAPBC leadership team: Nancy Kalinowski, MD, FACS—
Chairperson, Daniel Barnas, MD—Chairperson Elect
2015, Anda Boodt, Samantha Carlson, LMSW, Carol
Christianson, CGC, Dean Copely, MD, Gerald Dayharsh,
MD, Linda Grossheim, MD, Christina Jacobs, MD, Sanja
Kaluza, MD , Marcia Liepman, MD, Laurene Mann, MD,
Alan Messinger, MD , Tricia Miedema, PA-C, Lisa Miller,
MD FACS, Joseph Mirro, MD, Michael Nave, MD ,Steven
Nitsch, MD, Lisa Schering, RN, Colleen Schwartz, Theresa
Sweet, LPN, Bridget VandenBussche, BA, William Walker
MD FCAP, Carrie Williams, RN, Sandy Willie, OTRL. A huge
thank you to this team and
those who help take excellent
care of breast cancer patients
in our community.
