Idyllw ild is not just on a mountain, but all over the wor ld. Bravi! IdyllwildARTS vol 3 ❘ issue 1 Annual Report 2006–2007 H E A D M A S T E R’ S R E P O RT 2 June of 2007 marked the 21st commencement exercises of the Idyllwild Arts Academy, the 58th year of the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program and my final year as Headmaster of this remarkable institution. My new position as President will offer me many of the same opportunities of service to the arts, arts education and young artists as the previous one but will also involve some wonderful new directions for Idyllwild Arts and for myself. A time of change is a good time to note how things have changed in our world and change they have! When I became Executive Director of the Idyllwild Arts Foundation in 1985, there were 50 buildings on the campus and about 10 telephones. In 2006–07 there were more than 70 beautiful and functional buildings on the campus and most are wired for multiple telephones and wireless or wired internet connections. It is hard to find a pay phone on our 200 acres but students, staff and faculty all carry cell phones. As you wander across the campus you can hear a student speaking to friends in South Korea, China, Bulgaria, Taiwan, Poland, Russia or Los Angeles! Students in our little mountain paradise regularly email friends and relatives in all corners of the globe. They keep up with international events by searching the world wide web for information. Idyllwild Arts alumni manage the Korean version of Lincoln Center in Seoul, perform as the principal oboe of the New York Philharmonic, serve as the assistant concertmaster of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and are featured in gallery and museum openings in Los Angeles, New York, Oslo, Berlin or Amsterdam. Summer and Academy alumni alike are sprinkled across the world. Everywhere you go, you meet someone with an Idyllwild Arts connection. I wonder what the original founders Max and Bee Krone would think if they were able to visit. I know as the founder of the Arts Academy that it has surpassed my original vision as it has become one of the finest arts schools in the world. Pick a country, pick a culture, pick a language, pick an art form and Idyllwild Arts is involved in some way. The Krones’ original idea in the aftermath of World War II that perhaps human beings of different beliefs and cultures could find common ground in celebrating their arts together is more alive at this moment than ever before. The way we develop our programs to assist artists continues to expand, but some of the same needs are every present. We always need financial resources to provide financial aid money to assist the talented students who deserve the opportunity of the Idyllwild Arts experience. We need to continue to improve our facilities, increase our very small endowment fund, support our wonderful faculty and provide excellent instruction for our students. Bravi! celebrates annually those who help us provide these critical resources and describes notable successes and events in the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program and the Idyllwild Arts Academy. We carefully utilize the resources you provide for the school to make a significant difference in the lives of our students. They benefit; Idyllwild Arts benefits; and you benefit from the joy of giving. Thank you so much for supporting Idyllwild Arts. Bill Lowman, Headmaster P R E S I D E N T ’ S R E P O RT 3 h e a d m a s t e r’s & Jubel Chen ’94 got a job with the National Symphony Orchestra in Taiwan, where Idyllwild graduate and violist Grace Huang ’94, is principal violist. Board member Halle Stanford worked with Bret Nelson for quite a while at Henson Productions before discovering that they had gone to summer program together at Idyllwild Arts. Doug Ashcraft and Darren Schilling were walking down a little deserted alley in London this summer. They were surprised Nelms McKelvain tells the story of visiting New York City on an audition tour with Anne Behnke. One day, they decided to walk from Times Square to Battery Park. On their way, they met no less than three former Idyllwild Arts students. Idyllwild Arts is succeeding in its mission to produce the artists of the future and for the world. Its alumni, staff and faculty are appearing on stages, in orchestras and in exhibits in various cities and far-flung countries. For such a young organization, Idyllwild Arts is making an enormous impact on art and culture around the world. Students come to Idyllwild from all 50 states and from at least that many countries. They return home with increased knowledge of and passion for their art. They share their skills with audiences and other artists. The board of Idyllwild Arts Foundation reflects the geographic diversity of the campus. Board members come from all over California as well as: New York City; Santa Fe, New Mexico; Charlotte, North Carolina; Seattle, Washington; and we have two new board members from South Korea. They all excel in their responsibility to serve as ambassadors in their communities for the work we do here. Idyllwild Arts may be located on ‘the hill’ but, thanks to talented alumni and faculty, it is increasingly taking the spotlight on the larger stage of the world. Jim Lovelace, President r e p o r t s Chad Pisetsky ’00 found himself in New York City stage-managing a play written by Topher Payne ’98 and starring Carlo Vogel ’88. He asked, “Crazy, coincidence or both?” to see, coming toward them, Llinos Richards ’99 who is currently performing in London. p r e s i d e n t s Chances are, wherever you go, you’ll meet someone who has a connection to Idyllwild Arts. We often hear the stories of alumni, teachers and board members running into each other and how their lives intersect. I A F B OA R D M E M B E R S BOARD OF TRUSTEES BOARD OF GOVERNORS 4 James B. One of the joys of my job has been to discover the depth of loyalty and affection our donors have for Idyllwild Arts. Your gifts are so important, not just for the financial aid they provide or the projects they fund; your gifts show support for excellence in art education. You have changed lives and made dreams of a life in the arts a reality. a n n u a l g i v i n g Idyllwild Arts is a richly diverse community in which all participation is highly valued. Throughout the year, Idyllwild Arts sponsors a number of fund raising initiatives, such as Annual Giving, in which our goal is to have every member of the Idyllwild Arts community make a financial gift. 7 Art of Many Cultures To train the next generation of artists, Idyllwild Arts accepts the most talented students regardless of their financial situation. We are committed to working with each family so that the cost of tuition does not prohibit any child from attending. Not only do your gifts provide financial aid for our deserving students, they also provide funds for immediate use in support of various programs that make Idyllwild Arts so extraordinary. They are used to seize unexpected opportunities and continue to make a world class arts and academic education possible. This is why we call on you to make a donation each year. Idyllwild Arts is proud to recognize the record number of parents, alumni and friends as well as corporations and foundations, who made generous contributions. Clearly what matters most to our hundreds of caring donors is the impact their gifts have on the lives of our students. I look forward to reporting back to you on how your gifts enhance the education and art opportunities of Idyllwild Arts academy and summer students. An ISOMATA summer alumnus with several years of managerial experience, Bill had the ability and the desire to take on the challenges of a complex art facility. With the help of Richard Richardson, Director of Development, ISOMATA staff members Dwight “Buzz” Holmes, Steven Fraider, Tom Fresh and Krieg Campbell were all a part of the leadership team. Dr. MacNeal’s support and advice led to a decision in 1985 to create the first Arts Academy west of the Mississippi. The following months were spent negotiating an educational partnership with The Elliott-Pope Preparatory School. This partnership would allow the academic collaboration needed to open the Arts Academy. On October 26, 1985 an agreement was signed to begin operations in September of 1986. 30 This year’s exhibition, Take a Bow, presenting 20 years of the Idyllwild Arts Academy, invited viewers to follow the 20-year journey taken by the friends, faculty, staff and students of the Idyllwild Arts Academy. It began with a bold decision in 1983 by the Board of the Idyllwild School of Music and Arts (ISOMATA) to end a 19year relationship with the University of Southern California. Under the direction of the Board President Glen Stephens, and with the vision of board members Ray Todd, Bill Escherich and many others, the nascent Arts Academy started on its path to independence and success. In September of 1986, the Idyllwild Arts Academy opened with 72 students. In September of 2006, the Idyllwild Arts Academy opened with 265 students. The Krone Museum was thrilled to open the exhibition during Parent’s Day weekend in October. This was an appropriate time to reflect on the achievements the Academy has contributed to the Idyllwild Arts legacy. Danielle Segura Director of Major Gifts and the Krone Museum G A L A R E P O RT 31 g a l a r e p o r t Idyllwild Arts was pleased to present its Life in Art award this year to Dr. Larry Livingston. He was honored for his contribution to art and his support and dedication to Idyllwild Arts since he began teaching and conducting the IA Summer Festival Orchestra in 1989. Marty Albertson, CEO of the Guitar Center, was the honorary chair and presented Larry with his award. Lynn and Mitchell Lathrop, Idyllwild Arts board members, were chairs of the event and Cynthia Ward Kahla, board member and academy parent, chaired the auction. With their help and that of board members, parents, alumni and friends, the gala and auction were successful and exciting. Susan Barnett, board member, parent of an alumnus and chair of the first Idyllwild Arts gala, once again produced the tribute journal. It contained many lovely tributes to Larry Livingston and Idyllwild Arts. Cameron Whiteman, board member and uncle of an alumna, served as corporate chair on the committee. The theme was “That’s Entertainment” which particularly applied to the students’ performances. The orchestra demonstrated the tremendous talent that these high school students possess and the musical theatre and dance students who entertained at the end of the evening were given a rousing ovation. clockwise from top Dinner at the California Club, Larry Livingston, Mitchell and Lynn Lathrop clockwise from right Doug Ashcraft and Darren Schilling; Faith Raiguel and Carolyn Lowman; Earl Fisher and Audrey Fisher 32 clockwise from below Michel and Kris Mandel look over the silent auction items; Kasia Livingston and Francisco Moreno; Stella Johnson; Sherry Rusch clockwise from left Martin Williams, Cynthia Ward Kahla, and Curtis Aikens liven up the auction bidding; Marty Albertson; Alexandra Zeitz ’09 33 g a l a r e p o r t clockwise from above Max DuBowy ’08 and Rika Pere ’09; Momchil Enchev ’08, Dima Dimatrova ’08, Victor Yen ’08, and Peter Askim; the student finale 2 0 0 7 A C A D E M Y AWA R D S R IC HAR D MAC N E AL AWAR D Suzi Taggart Memorial Scholarship Annual Best Original Score Award Presented to a graduating senior who exemplifies artistic excellence, academic prowess, personal maturity and responsibility. Ninety five percent of our graduates will enter into the freshman class of a wonderful four-year-school that matches their intellectual, artistic and personal needs. Over the years, our students have demonstrated a tendency to take three distinct college paths, split along nearly even lines. One third of Idyllwild Arts graduates have gone directly on to some kind of conservatory-based education in the fields of visual art, music, theatre and dance. The second grouping has decided to pursue an academicallybased college education, and the final group has chosen to take on simultaneous artistic and academic courses of study. Students from the graduating class of 2007 fit this pattern, and it is a pleasure to present the list of college acceptances that reflects the rewards of their hard work and dedication. Jonathan Dunn, College Counselor Academy Faculty c o u n s e l i n g to the population boom here at home, the number of applications that colleges and universities now receive from students living in other countries has swelled. Many institutions report up to a twenty percent increase in international applications within just the past five years. American higher education is still the best in the world, and universities are encouraging applicants from other countries because they are well-qualified, and they add diversity to their campuses. A final factor making the college admissions process even more competitive is the fact that online applications and common forms have made it much easier for students to apply. The Common Application is now accepted by at least 320 different schools, and students take advantage of that fact by submitting their information to more schools than in the past. c o l l e g e American high school students graduating with the Class of 2007 found themselves in a pool of steep competition, discovering that admission to colleges this year was more difficult than at any other time in the past. Many colleges and universities that have traditionally been considered safe bets for average and above average students are now suddenly accepting fewer than forty percent of their applicants. Some of the country’s most selective institutions now accept fewer than ten percent of their applicants. College counselors around the nation are now removing the term “safety school” from their terminology because the application process has become so intensely competitive and wildly unpredictable. There are several reasons for this change. The class of American high school seniors graduating in 2007 is beginning to fall into a new demographic and generational anomaly that is coming to be known as the baby boomlet years. Right now, a large percentage of the children of Baby Boomers are coming to reach the age of eighteen, and this demographic shift is starting to be reflected in the college admissions process. In other words, more students are applying to college than ever before. Idyllwild alumni have been named Executive Director of the Los Angeles Children’s Choir, released CDs, gotten married, had children, graduated from college, received master’s degrees and PhDs, filmed movies and commercials, toured the country with Matisyahu, sold artwork, choreographed, danced, gone to medical school, moved to London, published books and collections of poetry, submitted films to film festivals, had a hit single debut on the charts in the top 20, shot pilot episodes, gotten re-acquainted with lost friends from Idyllwild Arts and so on. I just received a list of some of the concertmasters and mistresses that have been students at Idyllwild Arts and the list is amazing! You should all be so proud of yourselves and of each other. Our family of alumni keeps growing every year, the list of places we call home keeps expanding and we’re all able to stay in touch with each other by the monthly Academy Alumni Updates, bi-monthly Summer Alumni Updates, weekly below, from left Reunions in Korea, Taiwan, Los Angeles CenterStage@IdyllwildArts updates and Alumni Reunions. 1500 people receive the Academy Alumni Update and 1900 people receive the Summer Alumni Update. What’s more amazing is that 1600 people around the globe are receiving Center Stage every week! If you’re not on one of these mailing lists and wish to receive any of the updates, send me an email at [email protected]. If you have an update that you want to share, please send it to me as well. What is printed on the following pages are these updates from the past 12 months. Enjoy! This past fall, I met with 116 parents during 11 Parent Receptions in Hong Kong, Idyllwild, Japan, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Palm Desert, San Diego, San Francisco, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan. I also saw 96 alumni at our 9 regional reunions in Hong Kong, Idyllwild, Japan, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan. It is always so wonderful to meet with our current Academy parents and to see all of the alumni wherever I go and it goes to show that Idyllwild Arts really is everywhere you are. Alumni Weekend 2006 was an exciting event as not only were Idyllwild Arts alumni invited, but alumni from Desert Sun/Elliot Pope were also invited. A wonderful mixture of alumni and faculty from both schools enjoyed lunch in the Holmes Amphitheatre, a tour of campus, a viewing of the 20th Anniversary show in Krone Museum, dinner at the Idyllwild Pizza Company and the theatre production of “Urinetown the Musical.” In the coming year, I look forward to meeting with more Academy parents at our Parent Receptions and seeing new faces at our alumni reunions. Spring 2008 reunions will include Chicago (for the first time!) and New York City. If you’re in the Chicago area and would like to help plan the event or scout a location, please let me know. Otherwise, I hope to see you there. Spring 2009 reunions will include Los Angeles and San Francisco. 39 pa r e n t Thank you for making Idyllwild Arts what it is—a very special place in all of our hearts. I am a company member of Ariel Dance Theatre here in Austin. We are in the second year of a three-year long dance/theatre piece called ‘Gyre’ which illuminates the story of four people who find themselves in the North Pacific Gyre, which is a converge of all the different ocean currents and consequently has a ten million square mile area that is completely covered in plastic debris that the ocean has carried there. It is a story about the tendency to ignore and deny personal issues/problems until they come to a boiling point and we are forced to look at them. It obviously has an environmental message as well. We opened March 1, 2007. We are hoping, for next year, to get funding to actually go to the Gyre and get footage. Film is a big part of our work. We are currently looking for supporters. So I am putting the word out there to any one who wants to help, or may know of some one who may want to help fund this amazing project please contact me: [email protected]. Living next door to my best friend from Idyllwild Elementary Natalie Wyman ’01 and am just working and getting back into piano and singing. Life's good, and now that I'm close I'll have to come up for shows!” Justin Holmes, along with faculty member Glenys Cochrane was in a production of Neil Simon’s The Sunshine Boys, which played at the Ramona Bowl’s Courtyard Dinner Theater in Hemet July 2006. Academy E.S.L. Tivon Marcus: “I am now working for Disney Theatrical Productions assisting Thomas Schumacher, President of Disney Theatrical. I started with the company four months ago and it is a great change of pace from my previous position at Live Nation (formerly Clear Channel Entertainment). At Disney I am learning a mile a minute and enjoy being back on the producer’s side of the industry rather than the presenter's. While acting was a great passion of mine at Idyllwild, as I progressed through my studies at Carnegie Mellon I found myself wanting more. I discovered I had a real eye for business and wanted to incorporate that with my love for theatre. I hope to produce and/or work as a general manager on Broadway. I think what makes me unique is that I am pursuing the business of the arts and at my core is an artistic sensibility. In the commercial world it seems people are very much either one or the other.” Michelle Hardy-Fournet: “I graduated from Boston University in May 2006 with a BFA in theatre arts. I traveled around Central America for a while. I’ve been writing plays like crazy and I had one premier at the Pendragon Theatre in March 2007. Until then I’m seeing as much of the world as possible, seeing as much theatre and hearing as much music as I can. I am on my way to Alaska to work on a whale watching boat for the summer season.” Andrea Larreta: “I graduated Cum Laude in May 2006 from SMU with a BFA in Dance Performance. After moving to Seattle, I signed a contract with Redd Legg Dance. It’s a modern dance company in Seattle, Washington. I had my first performance in November 2006 at a benefit concert in Sammamish, WA. Seattle has been treating me well. I’m happy here. I had a show with danielandsomesuperfriends in April 2007. In October 2007 we’ll be going on tour! Dance takes up most of my life these days, and I love it. I'm also exploring a bit of modeling and acting, but it'll be some time before I see where that takes me. There are quite a few Idyllwild Alumni in this town, and it’s been really fun running into them everywhere. Joseph Luckhurst ’02 and I have started dating again. He’s studying theatre at Cornish and he will be playing the role Tiffany Paul is living in Austin, graduated from college a few years ago and has a daughter who is almost two. CLASS OF 2003 49 Nick Akdag will be attending Yale University this year. He is playing the bassoon and was awarded a full scholarship to Yale. Blake Langdale: “Wow, so much has changed! I live in Oakland, CA (better known as FunkTown). I run and built a music venue called the Enigma, which is 5000 sq. ft. with a huge stage, full on lighting show and PA system. I teach as a tap instructor part time in San Francisco, and I also teach private music lessons. I’m playing in four bands right now, my two favorites being Cagliostro (if Phish, Rush and Martin Medeski Wood had a love baby, we’d be it) and the Gonzos (slamming pure funk straight to the veins). I’m attending Ex'pression College for Digital Media learning how to be a sound engineer, but all my free time goes to booking bands and trying to make the Enigma the hottest thing in the Bay. Anyone from Idyllwild in the years 01-04 call me up and come by for a show. I am also writing a script for my first indie film that is slated to started principle photography mid-2007.” Andres Marquez: “I’m a dancer for Deborah Brockus Project Dance Company and I’m also a freelance makeup artist in LA (and a 24hr Club Kid*) Friends…I miss you! Email me at [email protected].” n o t e s Phil Sullivan: “Recently, I was appointed Operations Manager for Greenline Graphix in Boston, a brand new graphic design company in Boston. I have been teaching SCUBA diving at the Central Branch YMCA for the past year, which I find quite enjoyable. But the most exciting news is that Birdy Chou ’02 and I met in Boston and had dinner. We reminisced about all the great times we had at Idyllwild and talked about our mutual friends. On the way out of the restaurant, we were talking about Andy Lin ’02 and whom should we run into, but Andy Lin! He was in town visiting his girlfriend, who attends NEC. Andy, Birdy and I had a great time laughing about Idyllwild.” Lindsay Goyette: “Hi everyone! I just graduated from California State University Long Beach with a music performance degree in oboe. In the fall I am headed to Southern Methodist University to begin my Master’s degree program in oboe as well. If anyone happens to find themselves in Dallas, give me a call.” Wei-Yang Andy Lin: “First year Master’s at Juilliard isn’t as difficult as I expected, I guess knowing what you want to do after Master’s is the difficult part. I have been performing a lot recently. I played Mozart Viola Quintet with Itzhak Perlman on December 9, 2006 at his Synagogue, it was very interesting and a great experience to work with him.” a l u m n i Leyla Stevens: “I am busy teaching in an arts program designed for young people who have recently immigrated into the country (Australia) and have difficulty entering High School. I am still doing my own work and you can check out a recent exhibition at www.ccas.com.au. I graduated this past December from Pitzer College with a BA in Political Studies with a minor in Spanish. I’m currently on the hunt for non-profit jobs and waiting to hear back about the Fulbright and Watson Fellowships for which I applied.” of Peer in an upcoming production of ‘Peer Gynt.’” a c a d e m y Arianna Sikorski: “I am now Program Coordinator for the USC Annenberg/ Getty Arts Journalism Program and the USC NEA Arts Journalism Program in Theater and Musical Theatre. Lengthy titles that take a little too long to explain, but I coordinate these events as well as manage the budget. Plus getting to work with the major art network of LA—Getty Center, CenterGroupTheatre, Mark Taper, MOCA, Walt Disney Concert Hall, etc…and more. Definitely opens up the art world of Los Angeles. Lots of fun nooks and crannies where art lives here. Still traveling and using those good ol’ tech skills to get me around for free! If any of you are in LA, let's do a lunch/coffee thing and catch up! Miss you all and that free creative atmosphere…” CLASS OF 2002 Krista Peters was featured in the September 2006 issue of Southwest Art Magazine in the “21 under 31” article and the “Start Your Collection” article. Dr. Reiss holds a B.A. in Music Performance from Nazareth College and an Ed.D in Curriculum and Instruction from University of Houston. Dr. Reiss was most recently Head of School at The American Boychoir School, a professional, residential, vocal music boarding school in Princeton, NJ. Prior to his tenure at ABS, he spent 13 years in teaching and administrative posts at The Bolles School in Jacksonville, FL, where he was Director of Admission. For the twelve years prior, he served as Director of Instrumental Music and Chair of the school’s multi-disciplinary department of Fine and Performing Arts. In 2002, he was chosen as the school’s Edward E. Ford Teacher of the Year. “Joining Idyllwild Arts Academy” says Dr. Reiss, “brings me joy on a number of levels: as an arts educator and administrator who feels that there is no finer education than one that incorporates the arts at the highest level, as a colleague who has longadmired what IAA offers the world, as a practicing musician who understands the importance of such a program in the development of young talent and as a new community member who already feels a strong bond with my future colleagues. I feel that I have found what everyone hopes to find: a seamless match between my talents and the mission of the school. My wife and I both feel a strong connection to Idyllwild’s community, programs and locale and look forward to a long, exciting and productive career here.” Dr. Reiss begins his new position July 2007 and will join Jolynn Reid, Vice President for Advancement, Steven Fraider, Vice President, Director of the Summer Program and David Pittman, Vice President, Director of Business and Finance to form the new executive leadership team at Idyllwild Arts. S U M M E R P RO G R A M R E P O RT 54 One of the best examples of Dr. Krone’s beliefs took place a few summers ago during the Idyllwild Music Festival. Four percussionists enrolled in the Festival Instrumental Program performed a contemporary composition for four marimbas. The music itself was refreshing in its newness of style, and naturally, the performance by the advanced percussion students was quite impressive. However, what was most striking about the performance was the makeup of the individual performers. The quartet consisted of Bruce Chou, a university student--and graduate of the Idyllwild Arts Academy--and a native of Taiwan; Raymond Frisbee, an American university student; Javier Diaz, a native of Cuba via Venezuela, then studying in the U.S.; and Krzysztof Smanda, a student at the Warsaw Conservatory and a native of Poland. Who could have thought it possible, when these students were born approximately 20 years ago in four distinct corners of the world, that they would ever wind up in the same location at the same time and be closely united in this unusual musical endeavor? And to be so united in the relatively obscure village of Idyllwild, California? The power of music and music education at Idyllwild Arts was the force that brought them together. The arts can, indeed, be a powerful tool for bringing our disparate world closer together, as well! During the past few summers, we have seen an increase in the number of international students who find us, enroll in the programs, and return home to tell their friends. It is wonderfully gratifying when I see former summer students from Eastern Europe, kids whose families could barely pay for their airplane tickets to the U.S. the first time they came here, working as professional musicians in highlyregarded orchestras in Los Angeles. It is similarly gratifying to have accidental encounters with summer alumni when traveling to disparate destinations such as Katowice, Poland, Boston, Massachusetts and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Although the Summer Program is actively engaged in exchange program with schools and organizations in China, England, Germany and Poland, it is the serendipitous meetings with unexpected summer alums around the world that lead us to think that Idyllwild Arts has cast its magic spell in ways we could only imagine in the past. Although the web of Idyllwild Arts now extends virtually around the world, we must not lose sight of the fact that the common element behind all the accidental and planned encounters that take place between summer participants is that people of all ages, experiences and backgrounds come to Idyllwild as residents of their native states and lands and leave Idyllwild as citizens of the world of Idyllwild Arts. Steven Fraider Director of Summer Program SUMMER FACULTY & ALUMNI FA C U LT Y N O T E S Poet-in-Residence Ellen Bass (Summer 2006) has a new collection of poems, The Human Line, forthcoming from Copper Canyon Press. He was president of the Idyllwild Property Owners Association for several years. For the last 15 years, he traveled twice yearly to New York state where he instructed at several sites, teaching others “to really see, as a watercolorist, what they have been looking at.” He enjoyed great popularity as an instructor with the Elderhostel and Leisure Study programs at Idyllwild Arts Summer Program. Keith James Kent (above), 42, a longtime Idyllwild resident, passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2006 in an accident on the Idyllwild Arts campus where he had been employed as Maintenance Supervisor for nine years. Frances Manuel, who taught Tohono O’odham (Papago) basketry in the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program from 1982 to 1990, passed away in January at the age of 94. Shingai was a talented actor and artist and will be remembered as a Good Samaritan and a valuable part of the Idyllwild Arts family. Our sincere condolences on the loss of Shingai to his family, he will be missed. Newell Reynolds 1916–2007 Newell Reynolds, 91, passed away on April 21, 2007. Newell began a career as a dancer is the late 1930s with the Horton Dance Group. There he met Bella Lewitzky to whom he was married from 1940 until her death in 2004. When Bella co-founded the Dance Theatre, later to become the Bella Lewitzky Dance Company, Reynolds became the manager and designed stage sets. For 27 summers, Bella Lewitzky choreographed and danced each summer at ISOMATA. During these wonderful years, we all came to know and admire Newell. When Newell and Bella served as trustees, we reminisced about hiking in the San Jacinto Mountains, about the outdoor dance studios that he designed for summer use, and Eleonore is survived by her sister, Alice, who continues to teach at USC. Gordon Yeaton 1942–2007 Gordon Yeaton died on Earth Day this spring and each day I realize even more how much I miss him. I have been blessed to have been close to him and I will always remember how deeply comforting his voice was for me. Gordon taught me many lessons during his life, and even now, months after his passing, he continues to instruct me. Eleonore Schoenfeld 1926–2007 Eleonore Schoenfeld (above), an internationally recognized cellist and teacher who had been on the faculty of the USC Thornton School of Music since 1959 passed away in January 2007 at the age of 81 due to a heart attack. Eleonore, who with her violinist sister, Alice, performed and recorded for several decades as the Schoenfeld Duo. Eleonore was born in Slovenia to a Russian mother and a Polish father, who was a concertmaster. The family moved to Berlin when Eleonore was young and at the age of 6 she began taking ballet classes with the Berlin State Opera. Her sister Alice was playing with the Berlin Philharmonic by age 10. Eleonore switched to cello at age 11 and studied with some of the leading teachers in Berlin. She earned her artist’s diploma at the Hochschule fur Musik. The Schoenfeld family moved to Los Angeles in the early 1950s and the two sisters began their association with the Idyllwild Arts Foundation, which led to positions on the USC music faculty. Gordon struggled for years with his increasingly debilitating disease, and yet, surprisingly, he remained positive throughout his journey. He was always very active, devoting his life to his God, his wife, their family, his students and his friends. He loved the world and he dedicated his life to helping others. From his early activism against nuclear weapons to his later work with Habitat for Humanity, he always followed his strong social conscience. He promoted diversity and social equality. His grace coupled with his candid honesty has been instilled within his public school students as well as his students in the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program. Gordon’s inner spiritual life flowed freely into his outer life of artist, collector, music lover, constant reader, deep thinker and traveler; creating a person who lived his values. These days I have been struggling with life’s mysteries. What is the role of work, friendship, inspiration, aspiration, quietness and death? My true friend has gone on before me, leading me to my own transformation. Gordon’s death helps me to reconsider important questions about how we should live in the world today. — Greg Kennedy 59 m e m o r i a m From the early 1970s, Reynolds worked full time with the Lewitzky troupe, creating stage sets of plastic tubing and other modern materials. One memorable set he designed for the dance “Spaces Between” featured a plexiglass plank that angled up from the floor and was suspended by fine wires. Dancers moved up and down the plank, which was hardly visible from the audience. When I saw a performance in the 1970s, it looked like they were dancing on thin air! From an ISOMATA internal memo: The Schoenfeld sisters are now living in California, and it will be our good fortune to have them with us at Idyllwild this summer. They are both virtuosi on their instruments, with a repertory of all the principal solo and duo literature for their instruments, which they have played in recital, and with all the major symphonies of Europe. i n He had not planned on dance or design as his career. Born in Corona, CA, he was raised in Redlands and graduated from the University of Chicago, where he studied political science. After graduation, he returned home and worked as a carpenter while he took up modern dance. He became increasingly interested in architecture, particularly the modern designs of Rudolf Schindler, who built a number of houses in the LA area in the 20s and 30s. He graduated from the USC architecture program and joined Welton, Becket & Associates. He remained there through the 1960s as the firm launched several major projects, including the LA Music Center and the Cinerama Dome. Reynolds designed and built a house for his family in the Schindler style in the late 1950s and later added a dance studio for his wife. The home was eventually sold to two former dancers with Lewitzky’s company. about the success of his daughter Norah and her contribution to the Lewitzky legacy. I remember a very funny moment when Newell and longtime Trustee Jon Lovelace were trying to remember a particularly complex lyric to a song. The final iteration brought peals of laughter to the puzzled group that was listening. Newell was a member of the extended Idyllwild Arts family. We all miss him and will long remember his contributions to our school. —Bill Lowman, Headmaster A S S O C I AT E S R E P O R T The Associates have been assisting the school since 1968. Separately incorporated from the Idyllwild Arts Foundation, the Associates are an important source of volunteer help for the school and annually contribute fund-raising proceeds for Academy and Summer Program scholarships. For more information on the Associates, please call (951) 659-2171 x2333. 60 The Associates of Idyllwild Arts Foundation was organized in 1968 in order to provide financial, physical and spiritual support to the summer students at ISOMATA. Over the years, this support has changed as the school became a year-round arts academy and its needs changed. We now focus our energy on fund-raising for scholarships and providing outreach programs in the arts to the community, while still supporting the students however and whenever possible. The Associates membership has steadily grown to more than 300, and we offer various membership levels. We concentrate most of our energy on our annual Jazz in the Pines festival which brings in the bulk of the nearly $120,000 that we raise annually. The officers, board members, chair people, school liaison, and membership at large are to be thanked once again for their hard work and dedication.
