Dr. Grove’s Office Notes
Welcome back to everyone from our holiday vacation. Hope everyone had an enjoyable time with
your family.
Since the winter season is here, this is a good time to review with your child the information you
submitted on your Emergency Weather Dismissal Plan that was completed and returned at the beginning of the school year. If you have a change, please request a new form to be completed from
your classroom teacher. Also please note that if we have a one or two hour delay, breakfast will
not be served.
The district has started our automated call system for student absences. If your child is absent and
you have not called the school to report the absence, you will be receiving an automated call informing you that your child is absent and to please contact the school office as soon as possible.
The automated system will also call to inform you of weather related information such as closings,
delays, or early dismissals.
School is closed on Monday, January 17 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Students
will be dismissed at 1:15 p.m. on Monday, January 24th. Buck-A-Book Week will be the week of
January 17th.
East York will be performing the musical ―Pirates, The Musical‖ this year. Practices have started
and will continue through February. The musical will be performed at the York Suburban Middle
School on Thursday, March 3rd at 7:00 pm.
*Please take note of our spring testing dates! To provide the optimal testing environment for
your child, PLEASE avoid requesting educational trips or appointments during this time. Thank you!

A Little Light Reading
If you think blogs are just for teenagers, guess again. Dr. David Palmiter, author of Working Parents, Thriving Families
writes a blog for hectic parents. These ten tips for managing New Year’s resolutions are taken from his recent post
―Lions and Tigers and Vows, Oh My! Taking New Year’s Resolutions from Oz to Kansas‖:
1. Set daily goals.
2. Keep a daily log of those behaviors that are most important to your goal(s).
3. Join with others/Ask your partners for help.
4. Establish rewards for yourself.
5. Take lapses as opportunities to learn more about your vulnerabilities.
6. Use music if that motivates you.
7. Focus your mind on the positive behaviors you want to do rather than the negative behaviors you want to avoid.
8. Write encouraging and positive messages for yourself.
9. Make a plan to remove as much temptation as possible from the eye line of future you.
10. If you are a spiritual person, lean on that part of your life as much as you can.
For more from Dr. Palmiter, along with a great parent quote from Bill Cosby, go to www.hecticparents.com.
Gluten-Free Goodies
Brown’s Orchards and Farm Markets stocks muffins, cupcakes, pizza crusts and iced sugar cookies from Grandma’s
Gone Gluten Free Bakery in Lancaster. These items, along with other goodies available by special order, are available
in the Loganville store, but Brown’s will also deliver items to their North store for customer pick-up. All items are made
from scratch in a gluten-free kitchen. For more information, call Brown’s at 428-2036 (Loganville) or 767-4142
(Emigsville).
Making Therapy Child’s Play
Asking for help can be one of the most intimidating things a parent has to do. Yet, when it comes to our children, we’re usually
willing to do whatever it takes (within reason) to help our kids develop into happy, healthy adults.
Sometimes, that may mean seeking outpatient therapy for your child or your family. What many people don’t realize, however, is
that not all families are created equal. A “therapist” can be a psychologist, a psychiatrist, a social worker, a counselor, or a pastor.
There are counseling psychologists, clinical psychologists, family therapists, child psychiatrists…the list is overwhelming. And, unfortunately, a framed degree on an office wall doesn’t offer any guarantee that a mental health professional, no matter how welltrained, will have “chemistry” with your family.
Before you give up in utter frustration, here are a few things to keep in mind:
A psychiatrist has a medical degree, which means he or she can write and monitor prescription medication. Psychiatrists can
also provide therapy, but most children don’t need to see a psychiatrist unless they need some kind of medication.
The kind of therapist you go to matters much less than how comfortable you are with the therapist. All the degrees in the
world won’t make up for a lack of chemistry between the therapist and the client(s). Chemistry is not always instantaneous, but if there’s no chemistry after the first few sessions, move on.
Change takes time and persistence. Even when the rapport between therapist and client is strong, therapy requires an investment of time and energy. While it’s a good idea to try a different counselor if there’s no connection after a few sessions,
be aware that frequent changes will only make the process longer and more difficult.
Not all therapies are created equal. School-age children often benefit most from active therapies, such as play therapy and art
therapy. In addition, these kinds of therapists are typically used to working with children, and find it easy to make a connection with even very young children.
If you would like information on area mental health professionals, please contact Mrs. Hess at 755-1021 or

Family Movie Night coming in February.
We look forward to seeing you and your family at the next East York Family Fun Night!
Outreach Update
Thank you East York families for your generous giving spirit. We collected over 272 items for the 2010 Giving Tree. (113 pairs of gloves/mittens, 82 hats, 19 scarves, 40 pairs of socks, and 18 under wear). The
items were donated to Bell Socialization Services over the holiday break.
Please keep on collecting the soda can tabs. So far we have collected approximately 35 pounds of tabs.
Unfortunately because the price of aluminum varies, it’s hard to say how much money we will actually end
up donating to Ronald McDonald House.
Look for more Outreach opportunities this spring. May Festival is right around the corner so start saving
your unwanted dishes (no alcohol references or shot glasses please!) for the Penny Toss booth!! Look for
donation boxes in the lobby!
Here is a look at the number of food items that were donated during our recent food drive:

A New Year’s Resolution
The party streamers are down. The ball has dropped and here we are off and running in a New
Year. You may be planning extra trips to the gym, counting calories, or organizing your calendar to make more time for family, but don’t worry, it’s not too late to make just one more resolution. This year make the resolution to make more time to read and write as a family. It doesn’t
need to be as complicated as taking on reading War and Peace, instead consider the little ways
you can incorporate literacy skills in your every day life. Try one of these:
Write thank you notes after the holidays – whether by snail mail or e-mail, you’ll brighten
someone’s day while increasing your child’s ability to write.
Play games involving reading and writing- even at the dinner table. Try this: Have everyone
write three facts about him/herself on a slip of paper. Take turns reading them and
guessing who wrote what. Our family has a great time trying to fool one another using
facts that family members may have in common.
Put your child in charge of the coupon book, phone book, and map. Do you have one of
those giant book of coupons from a local fundraiser? Put your child in charge of checking either the Table of Contents or Index to find your favorite stores. He/she can look up
phone numbers either in the yellow pages or online. Finally, if your Tom-tom isn’t working, increase those map reading skills by passing the job of navigator over to your child.
You’ll increase their literacy and help their self-esteem at the same time.
Writing lists teaches great organization skills and incorporates literacy at the same time.
Your child could make a list for any of the following: groceries, chores to complete, top
ten family activities, favorite songs, exercise, etc. You are only limited by your imagination.
Read the best-selling children’s books together. Turn off the TV and instead of sharing a
show, read a little Percy Jackson, NERDS, or Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Enjoy a laugh or a
little adventure together!
Provide magazines and almanacs that have little chunks of text for your child to read. National Geographic for Kids and The National Geographic Almanac 2011 have great short
articles that allow for a snippet of reading that you can fit in here and there. They make
for great family conversation as you learn even more about the world around us!
Play games involving words. As I completed my Christmas shopping this year, I had to marvel at the number of games that involve reading! Whether you are playing Apples to Apples or Trivial Pursuit or Cadoo, all involve reading of some kind or another!
When you think of more reading and writing, don’t think skill and drill. Don’t think an extra hour
of work for your child. Think Fun! Make your New Year’s Resolution to have more fun with
reading and writing this year!

From the Nurse’s Office
Chris Stipanovic, School Nurse
Greetings and Happy New Year from East York Nurse’s Office! Here are some New Year’s Tips for
Kids ages 5-12 from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Maybe your child would be interested in
trying one or more of these Resolutions:


I will drink milk and water, and limit soda and fruit drinks.
I will apply sunscreen before I go outdoors. I will try to stay in the shade whenever possible and
wear a hat and sunglasses, especially when I’m playing sports.

I will try to find a sport (like basketball or soccer) or an activity (like playing tag, jumping rope,
dancing or riding my bike) that I like and do it at least three times a week!


I will always wear a helmet when bicycling.
I will wear my seat belt every time I get in a car. I’ll sit in the back seat and use a booster seat
until I am tall enough to use a lap/shoulder seat belt.

I’ll be nice to other kids. I’ll be friendly to kids who need friends – like someone who is shy, or is
new to my school.
I’ll never give out personal information such as my name, home address, school name or telephone
number on the Internet. Also, I’ll never send a picture of myself to someone I chat with on the computer without my parent’s permission.
National Handwashing Awareness Week: Congratulations to Ryan Powell 5-Brouillette for composing a song about handwashing and germs for Handwashing Awareness Week! Ryan and Seth
Culbertson sang the fun and original song to the tune of Jingle Bells for the afternoon announcements. Great Job! Also thanks to the following students for sharing handwashing information by
reading announcements: Aimee Martin, Eileen Herman, Alex Fuhrman, Erin Keller, Calyx Castel,
and Adam Petersen.
Healthy Tip of the Month: If your child suffers from winter nosebleeds, try using a cold air humidifier in the child's room at night. Saline nose drops or petrolatum (Vaseline) may help keep tissues
moist. If bleeding is severe or recurrent, consult your pediatrician.
February is Dental Health Month! In Pennsylvania schools, students are required to have a dental exam in grades K, 3, and 7. If your child needs a dental exam for their school health record, you
have received a notice and a dental form. If you do not have a family dentist, one option for getting
a dental exam for your child is to participate in the Doctors with a Heart program, sponsored by
the York County Dental Society. Please see the following page for participating dentists, their contact information, and schedules. The program provides free diagnostic, preventive, and emergency
treatment at no cost for those without dental insurance and who are not able to afford dental care. If
you are interested, please call one of the dentists to set up an appointment as soon as possible, as
the slots fill quickly! Please take your child’s school dental form along to the appointment.
Wishing all East York families a Happy, Healthy 2011!
