She taped the segment and told her son and daughter-in-law they needed to see it. In addition, the SaeboFlex is non-electrically based and is purely mechanical. The SaeboFlex positions the wrist and fingers into extension in preparation for functional activities. The user is able to grasp an object by voluntarily flexing his or her fingers. The extension spring system assists in re-opening the hand to release the object. 12 Shirley Newland Receives Shirley Newland received the Catherine McAuley Lifetime Achievement Award in Volunteerism at the 2011 Volunteer Recognition Luncheon. The specialty serves patients and families who are experiencing a life changing condition. A task force was put together to see if it was a viable service to add to St. Rita’s patient care. Members from nursing, hospice care, medical staff and mission services took part in the multidisciplinary task force. As a result, in 2001 St. Rita’s adopted a Mission Initiative to provide quality care for our patients and families through a team approach to pain and stress management called Palliative Care. “Palliative care really was a system wide initiative,” said Mark Skaja, St. Rita’s Vice President of Mission Services. “We already had an established hospice program and hospice nurse Lynn Woten, a member of the task force, was interested in expanding to palliative care. We were very happy to appoint Lynn as our first palliative care nurse and manager of the program.” Lynn Woten “I was very excited about taking on the palliative care program,” said Lynn Woten. “In hospice we were used to treating the “whole” patient and family. I saw what a difference the holistic care made. But hospice care focused on end of life treatment whereas Palliative Care is for anyone coping with a life altering illness or condition. It may be the result of a disease of even a serious accident. Palliative Care nurses advocate for the entire team… the patient, family, bedside nurse, physician anyone involved with the individual’s treatment. “Before we started the program at St. Rita’s, we visited existing programs in Birmingham, Alabama and Chicago… seeking expert advice and hoping to avoid pitfalls they may have encountered. That was very helpful and we were able to have positive experiences from 46 the start. Nancy Kirk, Nina Monroe, Mary Jo medical staff would respond to someone “I also applaud St. Rita’s Administration “Initially no one was sure how the else working with their patients, but Green and April Gardner. for their support. There is no additional once they realized the benefits Palliative reimbursement for Palliative Care and supportive. Palliative Care provider is there to act as Care could provide they were very “Dr. Sarat Kuchapudi was the first medical director of Palliative Care and he was excellent,” Lynn said. “I am not sure we would have been as successful as we were without his participation. After eight years Dr. Marc Rovner took the medical director role and he too is remarkable. Initially we hoped to some- day have 50% of our medical providers actively working with Palliative Care. I am very pleased to say over 90% of our referrals come from physicians and nurses. “We all agreed that our primary goal was to provide every patient with comfort and dignity. That meant symptom control, as well as providing spiritual care and psycho-social treatment for both patient and family. It is a total team approach from the physician to the bedside nurse, to chaplains, to nutrition- ists to pharmacists, to social workers they have never looked back. The a liaison to all parties. This is especially helpful where circumstances may be out of their comfort zone and it has made a difference to countless individuals.” Palliative Care has literally hundreds of letters and notes of thanks from patients and their families expressing their appreciation for the palliative care team, but Lynn says she is the one who is grateful. “I cannot imagine any better way to fin- ish my last years working at the medical center. I am so honored to be a part of this program. What a privilege!”* *Lynn is relinquishing her management of the program, but will continue to work as a part time Palliative Care nurse for the next few years. The program will move into the nursing division under the supervision of Katie Hunt BSN. and more. The entire team works togeth- er to take care of the patient and the family or other caretakers to provide the best possible holistic care. And although I was the first Palliative Care nurse I have not done it alone. I have been joined by Palliative Care certified nurses 47 Moving?
