Dear Friar Supporter, Student-athletes from the men’s and women’s basketball programs brightened the day of countless patients during their visit to Kent Hospital. Thank you. In 2011-2012, athletic fundraising at Providence College hit a record high and together we made a difference in the lives of more than 300 student-athletes. As a result of your generosity we are embarking on a multi-year series of facility renovations that will impact every student-athlete on campus. From Alumni Hall to Schneider Arena, the landscape of Friartown will be transformed to recruit the best student-athletes from around the world to wear the black and white. Your donations also enabled us to provide additional scholarships that will level the playing field against our opponents and open doors for studentathletes who would otherwise not be able to afford a first-class education. Paiva TRADITION PA S S I O N V I S I O N C U P G O L F T O U R N A M E N T S On October 4, 2011 and May 24, 2012, the Providence College men’s basketball Vision Team held its 1st annual Vision Cup golf tournaments at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, RI and The Stanwich Club in Greenwich, CT. Both events were a tremendous success, raising more than $105,000. The funds from the event will be used for charter flights this upcoming season for the men’s basketball team. ALUMNI WEEKEND More than 400 of our lacrosse, softball, field hockey, women’s soccer, and men’s soccer alumni returned to Friartown this year for a special weekend. 8 TH A N N UA L T H E R I N X W O M E N ’ S I C E HOC KEY GOLF TOU R NAM ENT SUMMER IN SEPTEMBER The men’s ice hockey program along with the Clarke Family held the 1st Summer in September fundraising event. Over 150 guests attended and the event raised over $11,000 to support the Penny Clarke Men’s Ice Hockey Endowment Fund and the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program at The Miriam Hospital. DONOR CHRISTMAS PARTY The 2nd Annual “Very Friar Christmas Party” was held at Capital Grille on December 4, 2011. The guest list included donors who give $2,500 or more to Providence College Athletics. 5TH ANNUAL FRIAR FIELD HOCKEY GOLF OUTING More than 90 alumni, parents and friends participated in this year’s outing and raised more than $4,000 for the program. 2ND ANNUAL MEN’S SOCCER GOLF OUTING More than 50 alumni, parents and friends participated in the 2nd annual outing and more than $6,000 was raised for the program. The outing raised $10,000. Participants included former Olympian Karen Thatcher ’06 and Friar great Wendy Cofran ’94. WOMEN’S ICE HOCKEY AT FENWAY PARK On January 10, 2012, the women’s ice hockey team hosted Dartmouth in an outdoor game at Fenway Park. BIG EAST FUNDRAISER AT PJ CLARKE’S Hosted by trustee Tom Boyan ’85, the event, held every year during the BIG EAST Tournament, raised more than $50,000 for Providence College Athletics. 2011 SHAWMUT DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION MEN’S ICE HOCKEY GOLF REUNION Over 118 golfers participated in the tournament, raising a record $25,000 for the program. Monahan, TRADITION PAS S I O N 15TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1997 MEN’S BASKETBALL ELITE 8 TEAM On Saturday, May 12, 2012, Providence College Athletics, along with presenting sponsors Cox Sports and Coast to Coast Promotional Products, held a 15-year anniversary celebration of the 1997 Elite Eight men’s basketball team at the Westin Hotel in Providence. This special team took Friar Fans on a magical ride, coming within seconds of a return to the Final Four. This celebration allowed Friar fans to relive the memories and moments from that exciting season. Former Providence Head Coach Pete Gillen, assistant coaches Tom Herrion and Bobby Gonzalez and former players God Shammgod, Ruben Garces ‘97, Corey Wright ‘99, Jamel Thomas ‘99, Kendrick Moore ‘98, Jason Murdock ‘97, Rick Cordella ‘99, Mark Adams ‘98, Llewellyn Cole ‘99 and Dennis Cleary ‘99 all attended the celebration. F R I A R S F O R E V E R A N N U A L AT H L E T I C R E P O R T FR IARS C E LE B RATE 40 YEARS OF WOM E N’S ATH LETICS On Saturday, February 11, 2012, the Providence College Athletic Department invited each of its former female student-athletes back to Smith Hill to celebrate 40 years of Women’s Athletics at the College. The event was highly successful and well attended by over 200 former lady Friars from each of the four previous decades as well as current student-athletes and coaches. A reception was held in the Ruane Atrium of The Concannon Fitness Center and all attendees were honored at halftime of the women’s basketball game vs. Seton Hall. In addition to a reception, attendees were able to participate in painting a mural, which originated from a collaborative effort between the Art and Art History Departments and the Athletics Department known as SPORT:ART. In his honor, on January 4, 2012, the City of Providence named a street after the late Gavitt. Brooks averaged 12.6 points per game this season, a total that ranked third among rookies for the 2011-12 season. He also averaged 3.6 rebounds per game (17th among rookies), 2.3 assists per game (ninth among rookies) and .93 steals per game (eighth among rookies) in 56 games. Former Providence College women’s basketball great and current NBA, WNBA and college basketball TV analyst, Doris Burke ’87, was named a recipient of the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award this past November. The NCAA has named six former student-athletes as recipients of this award that annually recognizes distinguished individuals on the 25th anniversary of the conclusion of their college athletic careers. “Doris is a true pioneer, someone who used both her collegiate education and her athletic career as a springboard to explore and transcend the defined limits of her craft”, said Providence College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley O.P. ‘80. Former Providence College hockey standout Mark Fayne ’10 led the New Jersey Devils to the Stanley Cup Finals this past season. Fayne played in all 24 playoff games this season and recorded three assists, including a career-high two assists in a 5-3 win over the New York Rangers in game five of the Eastern Conference Finals. Compiling an outstanding record of achievements, Susan Robinson Fruchtl becomes the ninth women’s basketball head coach at Providence College, after spending the last five seasons as the head coach at St. Francis University. “Susan’s commitment to academics and passion for coaching the game of basketball makes her a great fit to lead our studentathletes and our women’s basketball program.” The Friars welcome back former assistant coach, Craig Stewart to become the fourth head men’s soccer coach at Providence College. Stewart spent the last three seasons as the head coach at Division II power, Franklin Pierce University. “In Craig, I believe we have a leader and a winner, who will not only maintain that success, but also take it to the next level.” The background and track record of Chris Gabrielli will help bring tremendous energy, effort, and enthusiasm to the Friar family. Gabrielli becomes the Friars eighth head lacrosse coach in program history after spending the last six seasons as an assistant coach at Duke University. “The BIG EAST Men’s Lacrosse Conference is one of the premier leagues in the country, and our vision for the program is to compete for championships. N E W FA C I L I T I E S H IG H FIVE C LU B Before the start of every men’s basketball home game, kids between the ages of 5-12 joined the men’s basketball team on the court during pre-game starting lineups to give players a high five when they were announced. This is a benefit offered to season ticket holders. WOMEN’S SOCCER LOCKER ROOM RENOVATION The renovation of the team’s locker room was made possible by the generous gifts of alumni, family, and friends of the women’s soccer program. The new facility had its ceremonial opening on October 22, 2011, after the Friars defeated Connecticut 2-1 to advance to the BIG EAST tournament for the first time since 1994. Rich Pace ‘88 and his son, Tommy were guests of Marshon Brooks at a New Jersey Nets game this March. Rich won the opportunity through the Vision Cup Golf Outing.
