® ANNUAL REPORT 2011 CELEBRATING 75 SUMMERS OF THE CSO ROBERT D. KREBS, CHAIRMAN BOARD OF TRUSTEES WELZ KAUFFMAN, PRESIDENT AND CEO JAMES CONLON, MUSIC DIRECTOR A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN Drafting a message for Ravinia Festival’s annual report is a convenient excuse to look back on a summer filled with good friends and glorious music just as the days begin to darken early and the temperatures drop. What’s even more pleasing is to announce that in 2011, Ravinia not only achieved but surpassed its earned and contributed income goals while satisfying the varied tastes of nearly 600,000 music lovers who applauded more than 100 separate events. Drawn to our diverse programming, which is more than 60 percent classical, and inspired by Ravinia’s three-pronged philanthropic mission to sustain classical music, return music to schools through our REACH*TEACH*PLAY education programs, and to maintain the nonprofit festival’s beautifully landscaped setting, contributors helped us achieve a recordbreaking year. Not only did Ravinia see growth in the amount of donations, but also in the numbers of people making those contributions. An expansion of the donor base is difficult any time, but is astounding in this tough economy. Let me thank those individuals, foundations and corporations that have generously supported Ravinia, with special gratitude to UBS, the festival’s lead sponsor since 2004. A key factor to our success, I believe, is Ravinia’s dedication to the customer experience. Despite being a longestablished institution, Ravinia is forwardfocused and willing to evolve. Under the leadership of our President and CEO Welz Kauffman, whose first goal was to improve the festival’s infrastructure, this past decade has seen more improvements to our park and to the concert experience than any other period in our 107-year history. We’ve tripled the opportunities to dine in a weather-controlled atmosphere with our award-winning dining pavilion; we’ve rebuilt our donor parking lots to be ecologically friendly and attractive; we’ve introduced mobility carts to help customers who need assistance traveling between key locations in the park; we’ve added video screens in the pavilion that give audiences views of the concerts like never before, including carefully timed, scorespecific close-ups of musicians and even keyboard players’ hands in action; and in 2011 we opened our new grand entrance that gives people a sense of occasion when they arrive at the park along with the convenience of an underpass to the trains that so famously stop at our front gate. We’re already working on what might come next. In 2011 our incredibly engaged Board of Trustees initiated a longrange planning process to consider further improvements to our facilities, technology, education programs, customer experience and classical programming. I thank my fellow trustees for all their hard work on this project, and in all areas of governing the festival. The results speak for themselves. I specifically want to acknowledge five new trustees who joined this august board in 2011: restaurant proprietor Keene Addington; Mark Bergsrud of United; Gary Levin of Deloitte Financial Advisory Services LLP; Michael Gervasio of KPMG LLP; and Mark Gerstein of Latham & Watkins. Looking toward the future also means continuing our relationship with the incomparable Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Work has begun on a long-term contract to retain the CSO, whose summer residency Ravinia has hosted since 1936. That makes it the longest and most successful musical marriage in the world, and a great benefit to both organizations. I must also thank Jeanne Denison and our dedicated Women’s Board, who set the bar high for so many events, including our annual gala, while also contributing significantly to our bottom line. Special thanks go to our Ravinia Associates, a board of young professionals that promises a bright future for the festival. The Women’s Board started Ravinia’s education programs decades ago, and 1 both these groups are instrumental to our education activities, including our “El Sistema”-inspired student orchestras. We are looking forward to starting a new student orchestra in 2012. Ravinia’s approach to education continues into the shaping of professional musicians through our summer conservatory, the Steans Music Institute. We’ve integrated this program into the rest of the festival, giving more visibility through main-stage concerts to its participants, who receive fully paid fellowships to study with an esteemed faculty and the great artists who headline here. To ensure the future of this program, Ravinia has a launched a campaign to grow the endowment of SMI. In conclusion 2011 was a tremendous year for Ravinia Festival, critically and financially. This success is not just a memory to keep us warm through winter but also a challenge to do it all again in a few short months. Robert D. Krebs, Chairman Ravinia Festival Board of Trustees A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO Listening to a steam calliope pump out “Bill Bailey Won’t You Please Come Home”— the first musical performance at the newly minted Ravinia over a century ago—who could have predicted that this one-time amusement park would host the annual summer residency of the inestimable Chicago Symphony Orchestra? In 2011 we celebrated the 75th anniversary of this special relationship. The prime reason I came to Ravinia 12 years ago was to bring the brilliant Chicago Symphony Orchestra to new audiences for classical music. As a sort of Carnegie Hall without walls, Ravinia, with its eclectic programming (something different every day!), combined with our natural and welcoming setting,is the perfect place to give classical music a try. Our 17-concert CSO residency in 2011 showcased the variety and versatility of the mighty ensemble with a world premiere, timeless classic repertoire, superstar virtuosos, two movie nights, a complete opera, two major commissions and a multi-layered celebration of the bicentennial of the birth of charismatic composer/pianist/ media superstar Franz Liszt. The 19th-century musical genius was celebrated all summer as a composer, a mentor, a foil, a showman and inventor of the master class and the solo piano recital. There may not have been all the same people in the audience (and that’s a good thing), but the crowds were equally pleased by the best Tosca I’ve ever heard—with our brilliant Music Director James Conlon leading the CSO and soloists Patricia Racette, Bryn Terfel and the late Salvatore Licitra in his final performance—as they were by our big-screen extravaganza that had the CSO perform the Oscar-winning score to The Lord of the Rings—The Fellowship of the Ring live during showings of the film. Our indefatigable music director has come off an extraordinary year with the CSO (here and downtown, by invitation of Maestro Ricardo Muti) that included his conclusion of a multiyear Mahler cycle, a brilliant teaming with Yo-Yo Ma, and a world premiere commissioned by Ravinia from Nico Muhly for orchestra and five pianos (with the 5 Browns making their CSO debut!) and, of course, that perfect Tosca. Other highlights of the residency included Christoph von Dohnanyi conducting two back-to-back Brahms evenings with Emanuel Ax playing both piano concertos, and singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright making his CSO debut with his own 5 Shakespeare Sonnets, commissioned by Ravinia. To help attract new listeners to the CSO, we created a preview edition of Ravinia Magazine that was hand-delivered to 400,000 households. We also created a CSO program guide directmailed to 200,000 households—all in addition to our regular brochure and advertising. We also worked with a student marketing team charged with creating a peer-to-peer campaign to encourage high school students to take advantage of free concerts in their own backyard by one of the world’s most important ensembles. The kids also devised a pre-concert event they called “Cannon Ball,” a pun based on that evening’s programming of the “1812” Overture, that attracted students from as far as Michigan. Building on our reputation as a family-friendly venue, we made it even easier to attend. In 2011 we made it free for all children through age 15 to attend any classical concert on the lawn— including the centerpiece of our programming, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, which has played Ravinia in its annual summer residency since 1936. We even had a free lawn day featuring music of Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Dvorák. High school and college students who presented a school-issued I.D. at the box office also were given free lawn admission to classical concerts. A special 10-punch pass was also made available to all men and women serving in the military that allowed them to attend classical concerts for only $4 each. We’ve also responded to our customers who have asked for more alternative “classical” programs, whether it’s a film night like The Lord of the Rings or a performance by 11-year-old singing sensation Jackie Evancho or the stunningly innovative dance company Momix, whose wildly acclaimed dance-theater work Botanica was one of 50 Ravinia premieres in 2011. Aside from classical, we offered a wide variety of favorite “oldies” (Deep Purple, Dave Brubeck, Tony Bennett, who, as part of his 85th birthday celebration, rededicated the painting he made of Ravinia), “goodies” (Chicago, Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers) and 50 debuts, including Maroon 5, Guster and Jack’s Mannequin and Chicago’s own Oscar- and Grammy-winner Jennifer Hudson. We unveiled our new grand entrance, but even bigger, in a way, was our reimagining of an existing space, the wonderfully intimate 450seat Bennett Gordon Hall. We’ve thoroughly engaged this performance space with a series of $10 concerts (the cost of going to a movie!) led by the incredibly talented fellows from our own summer conservatory, The Steans Music Institute (SMI). No longer will we hide this light under a bushel. Each year SMI fully funds around 60-70 fellowships that give the next generation of headliners the opportunity to study individually, in groups and with a talented faculty, including public master classes with such festival favorites as singer Sylvia McNair and our own talented and tireless Music Director James Conlon. The $10 series also a featured standout performances by award-winning singer/actress Laura Benanti, cellist Zuill Bailey, pianist and From the Top radio show host Christopher O’Riley, pianist Valentina Lisitsa and exceedingly popular jazz pianist Eldar. v 2 Ravinia has taken a leadership role in cultural education. I had the great pleasure this year to sit on the board of the Chicago Arts Learning Initiative (now called Ingenuity Inc.) that is organizing the efforts of all arts institutions working with CPS students in order to streamline processes, identify needs and reduce redundancies. We have a better picture of the arts education landscape in Chicago than we’ve ever had before. As they head into their 50th anniversary year, I’d like to thank the members of the Women’s Board of Ravinia Festival for constant inspiration. It was this group of intrepid volunteers who started Ravinia’s earliest education programs, and they continue to lead the way in today’s REACH*TEACH*PLAY programs, working on the creation of a second elementary school orchestra in the “El Sistema” mode. I thank the Ravinia Associates and all of our supporters, particularly our lead sponsor, UBS. I’d also like to acknowledge our partners at Chicago Botanic Garden, Kohl Children’s Museum and Writers’ Theatre for joining us under the banner DO NORTH to make our region a cultural attaction for all Chicagoland. Finally I thank a Board of Trustees for whom stewardship is “DO diligence.” It’s so great to see them attending the concerts and events that they make happen. Ravinia would not exist without their leadership. In fact, I just answered my own opening question: It is people like this who would have foreseen the great future of Ravinia and its enviable relationship with the CSO. He also performed Chopin’s Andante spianato and Grande Polonaise on a program that included Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique conducted by Lang Lang’s mentor Christoph Eschenbach. 5 2011 IN REVIEW O n July 30, Ravinia Music Director James Conlon (top left) led the CSO in a thrilling concert performance of Puccini’s beloved Tosca starring tenor Salvatore Licitra (top right) as Cavarodossi, the artist-revolutionary whose love for the tempestuous Tosca (soprano Patricia Racette, bottom left) is thwarted by the evil and corrupt chief of police Scarpia (bass-baritone Bryn Terfel, bottom right). Filling out Puccini’s sonic tapestry was the Apollo Chorus of Chicago and Chicago Children’s Choir. 2011 IN REVIEW 6 2011 IN REVIEW T wo complete screenings of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring with live accompaniment by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and choruses plus soloists drew throngs of Tolkien fanatics to Ravinia on August 18 and 19. The combination of the epic film and Howard Shore’s lush symphonic score performed by America’s greatest orchestra provided two evenings of magic greater than any mere wizard could conjure, thrilling tens of thousands of audience members. 7 L egendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma (below) returned to join the CSO under James Conlon at Ravinia on August 5 for two celebrations of Tchaikovsky’s melodic invention, his Andante cantabile and “Rococo” Variations. The program also included Maestro Conlon’s own suite of excerpts from this year’s One Score, One Chicago selection, Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. It truly was a night of music “From Russia—With Love.” 2011 IN REVIEW 8 2011 IN REVIEW B y George, the Women’s Board of Ravinia Festival hosted an incredible Gala Benefit Evening on July 23, honoring the 75th anniversary of George Gershwin’s one and only Ravinia appearance. An all-star lineup of great Gershwin interpreters (above, from left)—singers Kelli O’Hara, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Sylvia McNair and pianist Kevin Cole—dazzled the audience in a program that reproduced much of the repertoire Gershwin himself performed here in 1936. The CSO, itself celebrating the 75th anniversary of their Ravinia summer residency, was heroically led by David Alan Miller, who graciously stepped in on short notice for an ailing James Conlon. 9 2011 IN REVIEW T he musical family phenomenon called The 5 Browns—a quintet of talented siblings who all attended The Juilliard School and now make music simultaneously on five grand pianos—returned to Ravinia for their resounding Chicago Symphony Orchestra debut on August 9. Making the occasion all the more special was the world premiere of The Edge of the World, a work Ravinia Festival commissioned especially for them and the CSO by one of today’s leading compositional talents, Nico Muhly. The concert, led by Ravinia Music Director James Conlon, also included Shostakovich’s triumphant Fifth Symphony. 10 P op troubadour Rufus Wainwright made his Chicago Symphony Orchestra debut singing his own Ravinia-commissioned (with the San Fransico Symphony) cycle Five Shakespeare Sonnets (above) on a program that included the CSO performing other Shakespearethemed music in the first half of the concert, conducted by Jeffrey Kahane. Following intermission, the singer-songwriter returned (below right) for a full-blown concert of his own hits that have made him a favorite at Ravinia and elsewhere. 2011 IN REVIEW 11 P art dance, part abstract art, and pure magic, Moses Pendelton’s wildly inventive troupe Momix made an indelible impression with their Ravinia debut performances on September 9 and 10. The vehicle they chose, Botanica, was an eye-popping celebration of the determination with which plants, in the words of Maurice Maeterlinck, strive to “approach another kingdom, to enter a moving, animated world”—a quote that applies equally well to the brilliant young dancers of Momix. 2011 IN REVIEW 12 2011 IN REVIEW A nother 2011 Ravinia debut that flooded the park with wildly enthused fans was that of Maroon 5, which appeared on June 30 and July 1 with special guest PJ Morton. Guided by lead singer Adam Levine, the group delighted sold-out audiences with the highenergy hits that have been their hallmark for over a decade. 13 O scar- and Grammy-winning singer Jennifer Hudson made Ravinia one of her very few concert appearances this summer with her festival debut performances on July 16 and 17. The evening, with opening act Miguel, revealed Hudson to be a visual and sonic knockout—truly the Windy City’s very own “dreamgirl.” 14 2011 IN REVIEW 2011 IN REVIEW A long with exciting new acts and upcoming young artists, Ravinia’s impressive roster of festival debuts also features the tried-and-true, bringing classic rock groups to be savored by their longtime fans as well as whole new generations of listeners. One of the summer’s hottest tickets was the August 12 and 13 debut performances of Steely Dan, the iconic rock-jazz-blues-funk band created in the late 1960s by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. 15 P erhaps the youngest headliner to make a Ravinia debut in 2011 was the 11-year-old America’s Got Talent phenomenon Jackie Evancho. Her purely focused soprano voice was perfectly showcased in a program featuring the Ravinia Festival Orchestra and guest pianist Conrad Tao, and gave a capacity audience a preview of musical treasures to be discovered in the coming decades of what promises to be a meteoric career. 2011 IN REVIEW 16 2011 IN REVIEW R avinia’s summer conservatory, The Steans Music Instiute, offers 60-70 fully paid fellowships to talented professionals from around the world. The participants study with an esteemed faculty and work with the artists who headline the festival. They also perform free concerts throughout the summer and are the featured main-stage headliners in five sold-out concerts, the anchor of Ravinia’s $10 Classics series. 17 R avinia Festival reaches out to families around Chicagoland through its REACH*TEACH*PLAY education programs, which include newly created student orchestras in the “El Sistema” model, under the guidance of the festival’s Women’s Board. The programs feature a community conservatory in Lawndale, artists in elementary school classrooms and the Jazz Scholars program in high schools. This year, Ravinia started a new project with Highland Park High School to have students create peer-to-peer strategies to attract high school-aged students to CSO concerts. This culminated in the highly successful Cannon Ball Event. 2011 IN REVIEW 18 2011 IN REVIEW R avinia expanded the use of its most intimate space, the 450-seat Bennett Gordon Hall by opening it up for a series of $10 concerts that included performances by the Steans Music Institute, Christopher O’Riley, jazz sensation Eldar, Broadway star Laura Benanti and many more. This allows Ravinia to book artists in an appropriately sized hall and to program more than one concert on a given night. 19 A & Q 2011IN REVIEW For several years now, as part of our ongoing attempts to establish a less formal and more casual relationship between performing artists and audiences, Ravinia has invited our artists to respond to a brief, informal interview feature we call “Q&A,” in which they are asked to answer a number of decidedly frivolous questions. Some choose not to respond at all; others provide only one-word answers. But some really take them to heart and make the effort to reveal a part of their personality that might not come across from the stage. We’d like to share some of the more interesting replies with you. Colin Jacobsen, first violinist of The Knights chamber orchestra, who reveals “I’m overly optimistic with time, thinking it’s possible to be in two places simultaneously, which can translate regularly as 15 minutes late.” And pianist Valentina Lisitsa really unburdened her soul on the subject: “I am the biggest procrastinator with anything but music. My ‘business’ communication is always in dismal shape. Hey, I am even responding to this Q&A an evening before the deadline, even though I had it for a month! I just keep adding red flag ‘to do list’ to my e-mails, and they keep piling up. I have very tempting fantasies about declaring an email ‘bankruptcy’—just send an apologetic email to everybody on my ‘to do’ list, close my e-mail account, and start anew with a new address. It is not going to help, though. To add insult to injury, I am not a ‘phone person.’ Somehow, since childhood I have had a ‘duck and cover’ reaction to a ringing phone. I would rather go to dentist than have a meaningful conversation on the phone. I can’t get rid of this habit—to my utter shame.” One especially fertile ground for our artists was the question, “Do you have an annoying habit?” For pianist Christopher O’Riley, it was “Wolfing my food.” Country music sensation Carrie Underwood described her hidden vice thusly: “I can sometimes be a little obsessive about some things. I have to have my fridge and pantry completely organized, and if anyone puts something back in the wrong place, heaven help them!” She seems to have a kindred spirit in the person of baritone Nathan Gunn, who confided, “I don’t think it’s annoying, but others might: I like loading the dishwasher in a way that makes sense so that it’s easy to unload after the cycle is over.” Vocalist Laura Benanti explained, “I say ‘I’m sorry’ all the time, even when there is absolutely no reason to do so. It’s a really weird and annoying habit!” Marta Aznavoorian of The Lincoln Trio dodged the issue a bit by replying, “Not that I know of! However, my pet peeve is when I can hear people chewing their gum. It doesn’t look very pretty, either.” Violinist Ray Chen admitted, “Yes—checking my Facebook 10 times a day. Any less and I start having withdrawal symptoms.” Time seems to be at the heart of the vices of several of our summer guests. John Oates, of the legendary rock duo Hall & Oates, claims “I am very punctual, which is a character flaw as a musician.” This is in contrast to Perhaps the most offbeat “annoying habits” are those of Adam Gardner, Ryan Miller and Brian Rosenworcel, the three members of rockgroup Guster. Ryan: “I finish everyone’s sentences for them.” Brian: 20 “Sexting? Answering interview questions with only sarcasm?” And not to be outdone, Adam: “I love to pick my nose and am not ashamed to do so in public, much to my wife’s chagrin.” Miriam Fried, director of the program for piano and strings at Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute, tells us what happens after a concert: “A concert is a celebration, and I do not really feel that I need to ‘wind down’ after it. It is concerts I feel unhappy about that require postmortems and then trying to forget about them.” But the most startling revelation came, once again, from Guster’s drummer Brian Rosenworcel: “I usually put my hands in a bucket of ice right when we get off stage so my fingers aren’t so inflamed when it’s time to abuse the hand drums again the next day.” The question of “What is the best compliment you ever received and from whom?” also elicited some intriguing replies. For Valentina Lisitsa it was “from a random online fan who wrote to thank me for what he called ‘disturbing playing.’ This is the best compliment indeed. I dislike smooth, pleasant, non-denominational music making—the kind one hears in elevator or upscale bakeries. I am not an entertainer-pianist, not a feel-good pianist; my aim is to disturb listeners into the most deep and profound emotions they are capable of.” Brian Rosenworcel didn’t hesitate: “This is an easy one. We opened for Sting once in Columbus, and he must have watched our set, because he stormed into our dressing room afterwards and asked me how on Earth I played the drums that way night after night, adding, ‘I ought to give you a Sting Medal for . . something.’ It wasn’t exactly a compliment, now that I think about it. I think it came from a place of concern.” Violinist Ilmar Gavilan of the Harlem Quartet said the group’s best compliment came “from Chick Corea, who said, ‘I cried trough the whole performance of my quartet. You guys made it sound better than what I wrote!’” John Oates still prides himself on a compliment he received from bluegrass mandolin player Sam Bush, who said “Nashville is a better place now that Oates is here in town.” Pat Simmons of The Doobie Brothers quotes “‘You’re the best dad in the world’—from my kids, right before they said I was a jerk!” Marta Aznavoorian’s favorite is a bit more lofty: “After I performed a concert at a middle school down state, a young girl told me afterwards that when I am playing, I look as if I am looking at heaven.” Tessa Lark recalls that “a man once came up to me after a concert and told me that he was there with his elderly mother who for years hadn’t smiled because of severe pains she was experiencing from chronic arthritis. After I played, he said, she was grinning ear to ear; he was astonished and asked her if her pain was gone and she said, ‘Of course not, I feel awful—but I think I just heard the best violinist of my life!’ To bring a smile back to someone's face, through such physical pain, is the most I could ask for from a performance, and certainly one of the greatest compliments I’ve ever encountered.” Walt Parazaider of the rock group Chicago had a lot to say on this one, too: “This is a pretty tough one. Hard to pinpoint the best one because I have been fortunate to have many people say very nice things about me. I would narrow it down to two. Jimi Hendrix said the horns are like one set of lungs and wanted to record an album with us. But, unfortunately, that didn’t happen because of his passing. The second would be Cannonball Adderly saying I started a really great band. As a point of information, I saw Cannonball a few times at Ravinia when I was a very young musician.” Some of the compliments were a bit more whimsical. Chris O’Riley got his “at Ravinia Festival after my first all- 21 movie (and responded to the next question, “What would be the most difficult thing for you to give up?” with “My favorite movie”), Gilles Vonsattel (who placed it in a tie with 2001: A Space Odyssey, citing “great music in both”) and both Colin Jacobsen and conductor Eric Jacobson of The Knights. Eric approached it gradually, pointing out that “The Graduate, The Godfather and Star Wars all hold very special places in my heart, but without The Big Lebowski, where would our generation be?” His brother Colin elaborated: “Within The Knights, we probably could act out the whole movie, line by line. Every detail of the absurd plot is lovingly cared for. And the soundtrack is great: Mozart, Meredith Monk, Kenny Rogers, Gipsy Kings, Moondog, Dylan and more. ‘The Dude Abides.’’ Radiohead recital, from [fellow pianist] Claude Frank: ‘I don’t know Radiohead from a hole-in-the-head, but I loved the piano-playing and I loved the music.’” Laura Benanti shared, “Patti LuPone told me I should be a stand-up comedian. That was pretty cool.” And Adam Golka no longer remembers who said it, but claims his greatest compliment was, “Great shoes!” One other surprising result came from the collective answers to “What is your favorite movie of all time?” Nowhere were the expected results of The Wizard of Oz or Gone with the Wind or Citizen Kane; instead we got To Kill a Mockingbird (Laura Benanti), The Tree of Life (Christopher O’Riley), Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (Walt Parazaider), The Royal Tenenbaums (Marta Aznavoorian), Pixar’s Up (Bella Hristova), Fight Club (Adam Levine of Maroon 5), “a tie between Where the Wild Things Are and Fight Club (pianist Conrad Tao), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (Steans cellist Nathan Vickery), Cinema Paradiso (Pat Simmons), Patton (John Oates), Lisztomania (Valentina Lisitsa), the Halloween movies (Carrie Underwood), just about any “Western directed by Clint Eastwood” (Nathan Gunn) and Pee Wee’s Big Adventure (Brian Rosenworcel): “Next week I will show it to [my 3-year-old daughter] and she will have nightmares about Large Marge for the rest of her childhood.” But the most vociferous response came from several fans of the 1998 Coen Brothers comedy, The Big Lebowski, which was named by Adam Golka as his favorite Thank you! To all of the wonderful artists who took the time to share some small but fascinating and previously unknown facets of their lives with Ravinia audiences by answering these and other questions, we offer a sincere and deeply felt “Thank you!” For the full responses from this season’s Rising Stars artists, visit the Ravinia website at www.ravinia.org. 22 GRAND ENTRANCE UNDERPASS PROJECT COMPLETED Breaking ground immediately following the 2010 season, Ravinia completed the $5 million grand entrance pedestrian underpass that connects the main parking lot to the festival grounds at the Tyler Gate entrance under the Metra train tracks. Designed by JJR, this handicappedaccessible ADA-compliant underpass features a concrete relief panel displaying the name “Ravinia” camouflaged in a relief image of birch trees. The new structure eliminates long wait times in the parking lot for customers who cannot enter the grounds while trains are unloading. In the past, wait times were as long as 30 minutes when the northbound and southbound trains arrived consecutively. Ravinia staff and its contractors worked closely with representatives from Union Pacific Railroad and the City of Highland Park for two years to plan this project. The grand entrance officially opened on the first day of the 2011 season, June 9, when the acclaimed Chicago Children’s Choir broke through a banner which featured a reprint of a historic photo of Ravinia’s train line, stretched across the tunnel while they sang a spiritual. The opening festivities also included a kiddie train ride in the park, an “instrument petting zoo,” where kids could try out musical instruments, prizes and train safety information provided by Metra. 23 24 CELEBRATING THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CSO IN THE PARK 25 1973: James Levine becomes Ravinia music director. 1936: Ravinia Festival reopens; George Gershwin makes his only Ravinia appearance. 1944: Leonard Bernstein makes his CSO debut at Ravinia. 1964: Seiji Ozawa named Ravinia’s first music director. 1936 1963: President John F. RAVINIA IN HIGHLAND PARK The not-for-profit Ravinia Festival has contributed $780,655 to its hometown of Highland Park, announced festival President and CEO Welz Kauffman. This is the third year of a 10-year agreement through which the festival donates 5 percent of its annual gross ticket revenue to the city for its use as needed. This is the largest amount donated to date, following $758,000 in 2010 and $710,000 in 2009, for a total of nearly $2.25 million. “We are so appreciative of the contributions Ravinia Festival makes to our community as a world-class performing arts center, a popular social destination, and as an economic engine for our city,” said Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering. “It has been and continues to be our pleasure to partner with Ravinia Festival.” “Ravinia Festival and the City of Highland Park have grown up together, and this agreement demonstrates that when Ravinia is successful, Highland Park is successful,” Kauffman said. “Highland Park is an extraordinary community filled with consumers of culture. That’s one reason why Ravinia is able to thrive and evolve with such improvements as our new grand entrance and underpass.” Prior to this agreement, Ravinia supported Highland Park by contributing more than $2.7 million over 13 years to local not-for-profits through YEA Highland Park, which distributed these funds to agencies dedicated to youth, education, the arts and social programs. The city of Highland Park continues to fund YEA with a portion of Ravinia’s annual contribution under the new arrangement. A study conducted by an independent research firm determined that Ravinia Festival is a boon to the local economy, indicating that concertgoers spend an average of $60 to $90 outside the venue with each visit. The venue also hires many local residents, with over 100 employed in 2009, not counting police officers and restaurant staffs. The venue also waives $100,000 in fees for Township High School 27 District 113 to graduate from the pavilion stage in two separate ceremonies each June. Ravinia remains an active member of the Highland Park Chamber of Commerce, through which we awarded our sixth annual $1,000 scholarship to a Highland Park student endeavoring to study music in college. Our REACH*TEACH*PLAY department continues to work with School District 112, including its annual “Kids Go Classic” event intended to introduce elementary schoolchildren to symphonic music, distributing 1,200 free tickets. Ravinia was actively involved in planning the “Focus on the Arts” immersion week at Highland Park High School. We introduced an arts marketing class at Highland Park High School in which 13 motivated students were charged with the task of peer-to-peer marketing of the CSO to other high school students. We implemented their plans, which included a competition between high schools. Each time a high school student showed a valid I.D. for FREE lawn admission to a CSO concert, he/she received one point. At the end of the summer, the school with the most points would win $5,000 for its music programs. A second, related plan invited kids from all high schools for a social “meet-up.” The students named it the Cannon Ball, a pun borne of the evening’s concert program featuring the “1812” overture. More than 200 students from as far as Michigan attended that pre-concert party and many of them then experienced the CSO for the first time. In the end, Highland Park High School pressed home court advantage to win the $5,000—which was generously donated by the Ravinia Associates. Ravinia welcomes all festival fans to follow, connect and interact online at backstage.ravinia.org, facebook.com (search Ravinia Festival) and twitter.com/raviniafestival. Ravinia Festival is a not-for-profit organization. RAVINIA IN SOCIAL MEDIA Like it, tweet it, snap it, tag it, post it and share. Ravinia is listening and sharing with its audience in a whole new way with social media. While our big-hitters are Facebook and Twitter garnering over 25,000 fans and followers, our presence does not stop there. We are actively engaging with our audience on LinkedIn, Flickr, Picasa, Instagram, FourSquare, Last.fm, and more recently, Spotify. Our patrons engaged with our social media in record numbers. Facebook had an unprecedented double-digit percentage increase over previous seasons. Our twitter photo caption contest helped catapult Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s presentation of Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring to be one of the most successful Chicago Symphony Orchestra performances in Ravinia history. For the night of the Lord of the Rings presentations, and two additional shows afterwards, we turned our lawn screen into a LIVE Twitter feed that audience members could tweet at using special hash tags and watch as their tweet came up in real-time on the giant screen. Ravinia-ran photo caption contests, a marriage proposal, photos of picnics, and audience-ran trivia games on the lawn, via the Twitter wall, were just some of the highlights of the evening and this is only the beginning. From a REACH*TEACH*PLAY concert at Hibbard to a $25 special CSO concert for the July 31 Tchaikovsky spectacular, our audience can’t seem to get enough Ravinia, and as our social media presence strengthens, it will be easier than ever to truly bring the experience Ravinia anywhere. Over the past three years, they have contributed over $870,000 to this fund, which provides ongoing assurance that the RISE Orchestra Project, established in 2010 by the Women’s Board in cooperation with the Peoples Music School, will flourish at Hibbard Elementary School in Chicago’s Albany Park neighborhood for a minimum of five years. Moreover, the fund allows Ravinia to expand the project into new locations secure in the knowledge that funding for this project is accessible. CORPORATE PARTNERS Ravinia Festival sincerely thanks its 2011 Corporate Partners for supporting Ravinia’s world-class performances and their commitment to the community.
