Fall 2011 - Happiness House
Fall 2011
Happenings
The Golisano Foundation Partners
with Happiness House
Happiness House is pleased to announce a partnership with The Golisano Foundation
to support the construction of a 5,300 square foot, eight person transitional residence
equipped with eight efficiency apartments in Canandaigua, New York. A very
generous gift of $440,000 was awarded to Happiness House. This “one of a kind”
non-certified transitional home will assist us in serving three young adults with
disabilities and five adults with TBI. Happiness House will ensure quality care and
compliance while utilizing various funding streams to serve all eligible individuals with
disabilities who will reside in this home.
“Happiness House is committed to providing lifelong opportunities for individuals with
disabilities as they strive toward independence,” said Eileen Gage, Happiness House
Board Chair and Vice President of Nursing at Finger Lakes Health. This residence will be
built on five of the 30 acres of land which Happiness House presently owns adjacent
and to the south of our facility at 5415 County Road 30 in Canandaigua, NY. Charles
T. Graham, Immediate Past Chair of the Happiness House Foundation Board explains,
The Golisano Foundation Director
Ann Costello
“This home will be transitional in nature and will serve as a catalyst toward independence within their community.” Residents will volunteer, work or attend school outside the home.
“The Trustees of The Golisano Foundation are pleased to partner with Happiness House on this service model,”
said Ann Costello, Director of The Golisano Foundation. “In tough economic times, we must look for alternative,
cost effective programs that provide needed services at a lower cost. We believe this proposed non-certified
transitional residence could become a viable service model for the state and other parts of the nation. We
applaud their vision and foresight.”
“Over the past six years Happiness House has received approximately one million dollars from The Golisano
Foundation to ensure high quality services for individuals with special needs,” said Mary Walsh Boatfield,
Happiness House CEO. The total cost of this project is $725,000. Special thanks to Guardian Industries and to
Frank Marianacci for their generous donations. Additional funds will be raised through grants, financing plans
and fundraising events.

As I celebrate 10 years at Happiness House, I
fondly look back at all our successes and
enthusiastically toward the future. Over the last
decade the agency’s revenue has doubled to
almost a ten million dollar agency in 2009.
Recent projects to enhance growth and economic development
include the groundbreaking of our transitional home in partnership
with the Golisano Foundation, completion of a $1.5 million dollar
building project campaign, opening of the agency’s first community
residence for youth, construction of a new 23,000 square foot building
in Canandaigua, and a 4,500 square foot expansion project in Geneva.
Increasing services and budget by 100%, Happiness House now
provides services to more than 1,000 individuals with and without
disabilities and their families, and is the 16th largest employer in Ontario
County with 225 employees.

Letters to the Editor
In the spirit of Autism Awareness month, we would like to
thank the Finger Lakes Times for all that they have done to
promote awareness of the comprehensive array of autism
services offered at Happiness House.
Happiness House has been there from the beginning for our
family. My son, Noah received early intervention services,
diagnostic and evaluation services offered at the Autism
Clinic made possible by Senator Nozzolio and continues to
receive service coordination offered at Happiness House.
Noah attended preschool at Happiness House in
Canandaigua, which is the only integrated State Education
Department preschool provider for children with and
without special needs including Autism in Ontario and
Seneca counties.
Now as a school age child, Noah has been integrated into
the public school system and is currently in 3rd grade.

many skills academically, socially and even athletically. He puts a tear in our eye and a smile on our face every day and makes us
so proud to be called “mom and dad”. Happiness House was a necessary and rewarding step in Noah’s journey and I can’t thank
his teachers, therapists and classroom staff enough.
It is wonderful to know that we have Happiness House/Autism Services in the Finger Lakes at Happiness House in our community.
I continue to tell of our experiences at Happiness House and the wonderful, life changing services it provides to both children and
their families. Happiness House truly helps children and families prepare for the journey ahead.
It is so true as Happiness House says, What happens here changes lives forever.
Gary and Heidi Haus
We would like to thank Minority Leader Brian Kolb and Senator Michael
Nozzolio for recognizing the needs and for believing in people who
have suffered a traumatic brain injury. On June 24th they both voted to
exempt therapy caps as stated in State bill S.5851 Hannon, A.8515 Kellner
for individuals who have sustained a brain injury. This amendment to the
bill will allow us to receive the necessary services that we need which
allow us to live happy productive lives. We are so pleased to have
representatives who listen and care about those in need in this
community.
“Thank you for recognizing the importance of ongoing therapy for people
with brain injuries.” – Carl Beach
“Thank you for all your hard work.” – Chad Stallsworth
“Thanks, my therapies are good for me. You’re good guys.” – Tod Beach
“Thank you!”– Tom Crowford
“Thank you!”– Melissa Power
“God bless you. Thank you.” – Michael Rosato
“Thank you very much, therapy has been a miracle to me.” – Carol Jaycox
“You don’t know how much your decision to continue my therapies has
meant to my life.” – Timothy Hosford
A very special thank you from the participants of the Happiness House
Traumatic Brain Injury Day Program.

in partnership with The Golisano Foundation
This well-designed transitional home model is a win-win for the consumers, the community and New York State.
There are many individuals in the Finger Lakes Region currently living in Individualized Residential Alternatives
(IRAs) who are able to live in a more independent setting. Individuals leaving an IRA to live in the transitional
home will create openings for individuals on the waiting lists who have much higher medical/physical needs.
Up to 40 individuals will live in the transitional home over the next 10 years.
The transitional home will provide the skills and training necessary for the eight young adults to move into a more
independent living opportunity in their community, including:
t Budgeting
t Cleaning, cooking, and laundry
t Self-medication
t Access to public transportation
t Any other skill a young adult requires to live on their own.
4
Residential Services
Happiness House Transitional House provides individuals with disabilities the same living opportunities as their non-disabled
peers in the least restrictive environment. The home’s structured environment enables the individuals who live there to
increase positive life skills (social skills, independence and self-esteem), provides access to transportation for work, school and
community involvement, and maximizes independent living with the goal of transitioning to an apartment in their community.
Meet: Samantha “Sam” Shoemaker
Samantha is a 26 year old woman who had a brain tumor near her eyes. When the tumor
was removed, Samantha was left with cognitive impairments. She is currently living with
her mother in Seneca County. Public transportation in Seneca County is very limited and
Sam has difficulty getting places. Sam’s injury has made it difficult for her to acclimate in
social situations. Sam has the potential to work in a community based job and to live on
her own. In order for Sam to reach her potential she needs the support and
encouragement to undertake difficult tasks.
Meet: Kevin Crowley
Kevin Crowley is a resident of the Happiness House’s Maple Avenue IRA, in Stanley, New
York. He also participates in Service Coordination and Structured Day Program through
Happiness House. While in program, he actively participates in gardening courses and
technology lessons, enjoys socializing and making new friends, going on outings, and
volunteering for Meals-On-Wheels.
In the future, Kevin would like to live on his own, have a big house with lots of cars, and
have his own job. To transition toward living independently, Kevin will move to the
Happiness House Transitional Home in January of 2012. He will receive intensive supports and services which will enable him to be successful living in a “typical” apartment.
Kevin states, “Happiness House has been a life changing experience for me. It’s helping
me learn how to live life to the fullest.”

Our Mission
FOUNDATION
FOUNDATION
The Happiness House Foundation is a not for profit organization established to raise and generate funds that
will promote, support and augment the continuation of long term services for people with disabilities offered
by Happiness House in Ontario, Seneca, Wayne and Yates Counties.
An endowment is an organization’s financial cornerstone, the foundation of its
ability to incite progress in education, consumer care, and therapeutic equipment.
Through allowing an organization to be less dependent on unpredictable sources of revenue, such as government aid, endowments
ensure that promising programs, individuals, and initiatives have the unwavering support they need.
Why create an endowment?
Establishing an endowment is an act of great generosity and vision. Donors who decide to
create an endowment do so because they understand the significance of supporting the
organization not only during their lifetime, but well into the future.
Change lives forever.
These visionary individuals, families, and organizations have joined hands and hearts together to build an extraordinary resource.

Hopes & High Expectations Conference
Happiness House recently presented their first annual Conference on Autism, entitled “Hopes
& High Expectations”. A conference for professionals and families, the program featured
keynote speaker Eustacia Cutler, mother of Temple Grandin. Cutler shared the challenges
of raising her oldest daughter during the 1950’s, a time when society institutionalized those
with disabilities. Temple was diagnosed with Autism in 1950. Grandin, who holds a doctorate
in animal science, is Associate Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University, and
author of Animals in Translation. Eustacia has also authored a book on her experience,
entitled A Thorn in My Pocket: Temple Grandin’s Mother Tells the Family Story.
Ms. Cutler spoke at length to a packed conference of 169 parents, educators, and caregivers
who sought comfort and encouragement in their own journeys with a loved one diagnosed
with Autism. Sponsored by the Happiness House Foundation, other speakers included
Dorinne Davis, MA, CCC-A, FAAA, RCTC, BARA; Lori Jeanne Peloquin, Ph.D.; and Tristram
Smith, Ph.D. Other topics discussed included Developmental vs. ABA Interventions for
Communication, Enhancing Development Through Play, Sound Therapy Supporting Autism,
and Family Dynamics.
The second annual Conference on Autism has been scheduled for Friday, March 23, 2012. As the event draws closer, more
information can be found at www.happinesshouse.org.
10 Statistics about Autism
(excerpt from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website: http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/data.
html)
t
It is estimated that an average of 1 in 110 children in the United States have an
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
t
ASDs are reported to occur in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups, yet are on
average 4 to 5 times more likely to occur in boys than in girls.
t
If 4 million children are born in the United States every year, approximately 36,500
children will eventually be diagnosed with an ASD. Assuming the prevalence rate
has been constant over the past two decades, we can estimate that about 730,000
individuals between the ages of 0 to 21 have an ASD.
t
Parents who have a child with an ASD have a 2%–8% chance of having a second
child who is also affected.
t
A report published by CDC in 2009, shows that 30-51% (41% on average) of the
children who had an ASD also had an Intellectual Disability (intelligence quotient
<=70).
t
About 40% of children with an ASD do not talk at all. Another 25%–30% of children
with autism have some words at 12 to 18 months of age and then lose them. Others
may speak, but not until later in childhood.
t
The median age of earliest ASD diagnosis is between 4.5 and 5.5 years, but for
51–91% of children with an ASD, developmental concerns had been recorded before
three years of age.
t
Studies have shown that about one third of parents of children with an ASD noticed
a problem before their child’s first birthday, and 80% saw problems by 24 months.
Research has shown that a diagnosis of autism at age 2 can be reliable, valid, and
stable.
t
Despite evidence that ASDs can often be identified at around 18 months, many
children do not receive final diagnoses until they are much older.
t
Recent studies have estimated that the lifetime cost to care for an individual with an
ASD is $3.2 million. Individuals with an ASD had average medical expenditures that
exceeded those without an ASD by $4,110–$6,200 per year.
