Gift of Life News - Gift of Life Donor Program
The 16th Annual Dash for Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Since 1995, Gift of Life Donor Program has been proud to host the Annual Dash for Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness. In 2010, more than 6,000 participants helped make the Dash a great success. But the 2011 Dash is shaping up to be the best yet! This year’s Dash is scheduled to kick off at 8am on Sunday, April 17th, 2011 at the Art Museum in Philadelphia, PA. Whether it’s your goal to run a 5K this year, challenge yourself to run a 10K, or even take the first steps toward better health by walking a 3K, the Dash is an event geared toward bringing people together for good health, and spreading awareness about the critical need for more organ and tissue donors. Acts of Love: Gift of Life Living Donor Ceremony Recognizes the Greatest Gift Every year, Gift of Life Donor Program hosts a special Living Donor Ceremony to honor those who have made the generous decision to give the gift of life by becoming a living donor. This yearly ceremony was held on February 20th at the Crowne Plaza Valley Forge Hotel in Valley Forge, PA, to recognize all of those individuals who decided to become a living donor during the past two years. Run for yourself, a loved one or a friend. Walk with co-workers, congregation members or professional organizations. Become part of the movement to help the more than 6,400 men, women and children on the waiting list for life-saving organ transplants in our region. See Dash sponsors on page 7 Register online for the Dash today at www.donors1.org. RIGHT: Get a spring in your step! Participants of last year’s Dash celebrate with a hop. Sign up for 2011 today! UPPER right: Steve Turner met kidney recipient Patricia Ingram for the first time at Gift of Life’s Living Donor Ceremony in February. At the ceremony, both living donors and those transplant recipients who have benefited from their gifts were invited to participate in a meaningful exchange of Gift of Life pins. They were treated to a special keynote address from Steve Turner who, in a random act of kindness, altruistically donated one of his kidneys to someone he’d never met. “When people ask me why I would donate a kidney to a stranger, I think of the story of the Good Samaritan,” says Turner, who acts as General Counsel to the Department of State of Pennsylvania. “I simply came upon a stranger in need and the decision to donate was the right thing to do.” Turner, who worked with continued on page 2 1 Gifts of Life... acts of love ACTS OF LOVE, continued from page 1 the transplant center at Pinnacle Health’s Harrisburg Hospital, who also adds that the importance of living donation hit home while watching a news story during a recent Thanksgiving meal. Turner and his kidney recipient, Patricia Ingram—a mother and grandmother from Baltimore, MD—met for the first time at the ceremony. With more than 5,000 people waiting for a kidney transplant in our region, living donation is vital, as the need for organ transplants far outweighs the amount of donated organs. Because of this shortage, relatives, friends, and anonymous individuals are becoming living donors. During the past five years, more than 6,200 transplants were made possible through living donors. Most often, living donors give a kidney; however, they can also give a segment of the liver, lung, or pancreas. The Kidney Paired Donation (KPD) registry program was created as a means of sharing living donor kidneys and pairing willing donors with corresponding kidney patients who are waiting. Living donors who are incompatible with their intended recipients can now donate their kidneys in coordination with other participating donor/recipient pairs in what is known as “paired donation.” If you, or someone you know, are interested in obtaining more information about living donation, please contact Diane James at [email protected]. Coordinated by Donate Life America and Los Angeles-based One Legacy, the float was titled “Seize the Day,” and illustrated the need for all of us to live life to the fullest. LEFT, TOP TO BOTTOM: York, PA’s Missy Sweitzer rides the Donate Life float on behalf of her son and donor, Zac Sweitzer. “Seize the Day” featured beautifully decorated floragraph portraits of donors from around the country. RIGHT, TOP TO BOTTOM: The Donate Life float took the parade theme award, for best interpreting the meaning of this year’s Rose Parade, “Building Dreams, Friendships and Memories.” Among this year’s floragraphs was Zac Sweitzer, organ donor from York, PA. The float won the parade’s “2011 Theme Award,” for best representing the parade’s concept. Gift of Life was proud to sponsor riders on the float, including York, PA resident Missy Sweitzer, riding in memory of her son and organ donor, Zac Sweitzer. Also riding on the float was New Jersey Sharing Network’s own Jessica Melore, a heart recipient riding in honor of her donor, Mechanicsburg, PA native Shannon Eckert. In 1999, Shannon became Jessica’s heart donor, and in the days leading up to this year’s parade, “Good Morning America” featured Melore’s first meeting with the Eckert family at the Gift of Life Donor Program offices in Philadelphia, PA. Funds from this event go directly towards attaining our mission. THE Party is Back! In 2000, interior designer Don Freeman was having what he assumed was a minor health issue. But Freeman soon learned thathe would need a new heart. After waiting more than four months for a transplant, he and his wife Renee realized how critical the need for organ and tissue donation had become in this region. In 2001, Renee and Don founded Organ Donors Are Heroes, a committed group of volunteers supporting Gift of Life Donor Program and its charitable supporting organization, Transplant Foundation. Its mission is to raise public awareness about the importance of becoming an organ and Renee and Don Freeman celebrate THE Party with Miss Pennsylvania 2010 and Fox 29’s Mike Jerrik. This year’s ninth annual “THE Party” will raise funds to help maintain our public awareness programs, school summits and teaching initiatives. All of which are geared towards educating and dispelling the myths surrounding becoming an organ donor and the need for life-saving, life-enhancing transplants. “THE Party” will be held Friday, April 8, 2011, at the Four Seasons Philadelphia Hotel. Enjoy hors d’oeuvres from Philadelphia’s finest eateries, cocktails and dancing. Fashionable attire requested. Tickets to THE Party are available at the door, or online at: www.donorsareheroestheparty.com. Gift of Life Donor Program staff help Donors Are Heroes spread the love by raising awareness for organ and tissue donation at THE Party in 2010. Wrapped in Hugs Honors Donor Families At the 2010 Transplant Games last summer in Madison, WI, donor families in attendance were given a hand-knit or crocheted shawl at the Games’ traditional Donor Recognition Ceremony. These wraps, made by volunteers, were a comforting and supportive gesture to all the families whose loved ones gave the gift of life to countless others. In turn, Team Philadelphia’s donor families have been inspired to do the same at our local Donor Recognition Ceremonies. Gift of Life Donor Program will provide you with directions and patterns. If you don’t know how to knit or crotchet, we are also looking for skeins of yarn and supplies. The families who received these wraps at the Transplant Games felt both grateful and supported. Our intention will be to make our donor families feel wrapped in thanks and love at our own ceremonies next year. Placing a beautiful, warm wrap around a person’s shoulders offers a “hug” of compassion and gratitude. Our goal is to give each donor family who attends our November 2011 regional ceremonies a handmade wrap as part of our “Wrapped in Hugs” initiative. With more than 225 families expected to attend the ceremonies, this will be a huge undertaking. We’re looking for volunteers to knit or crotchet a wrap to be given to donor families at the ceremonies next fall. Please help commemorate the important gift these families have given transplants patients in the region. Please contact Lara Moretti at [email protected] to learn more, or call 800-DONORS-1 ext. 1103. | 4 | M’korstock Gift of Life Celebrates Congregation M’kor Shalom presents M’korstock, an outdoor festival full of music and celebration, on Sunday, May 22, 2011. After a series of surgeries to repair the hole, Joshua was managing his heart condition well until October 2009, when mysterious symptoms led to the 13 year-old being placed on the pediatric heart transplant waiting list. “I can’t put that feeling into words,” recalls Joshua’s father, Steve. “As a Dad, I was doing everything I could do, but it was completely out of my hands.” Finally, on February 19, 2010, just several days after Valentine’s Day, Joshua Crum received a new heart that was coordinated through Gift of Life Donor Program. of individuals benefit from vital bone grafts to repair fractures and to prevent amputations, skin for burn patients, heart valves to prevent defects, and corneas to end blindness. More than 2,330 donors gave the gift of sight last year. Gift of Life is proud to call this region one of the most generous in the U.S. Gift of Life credits the generosity of the donors and their families and the dedication and cooperation from the region’s 138 hospitals and 15 transplant centers for their dual advocacy and diligence. He had the most wonderful sense of humor and loved to make others laugh. He loved baseball and the Phillies. 2011 Dash for Organ & Tissue Donor Awareness sponsors: In November of 2008, Ethan’s walking became unsteady, his speech became slurred and he had double vision. I immediately took Ethan to his pediatrician. In December 2008, after an MRI, we received the diagnosis... Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, a rare aggressive tumor inside of the brainstem. There is no cure or effective treatment. Life expectancy is only 9-12 months. I can never express in words just how devastated I was at the thought of losing my precious little boy. By the end of radiation, Ethan was very much back to himself. We lived more in that 14 months then most do in a lifetime. Ethan played little league, went on several trips and spent lots of time swimming, riding his bike and just being a kid. In August 2009, Ethan was given the opportunity to meet his hero, Phillies’ second baseman Chase Utley. Chase took the time to talk with Ethan down on the field before a game. Ethan had told me over and over again how much he wanted to ask Chase to hit a home run for him. As shyness got the best of him he whispered and asked me if I would ask Chase for him. Chase’s reply was that he would try. Ethan beamed. That night as we watched the game, Chase came up for his second at bat of the night and sent one out of the ballpark. The look on Ethan’s face was one I will never forget. He told me that was the best night of his life. Over the next few months, Ethan’s symptoms returned. Ethan was in a wheelchair and had no control over the left side of his body. About this time I recalled something my Mom had said. She lost a son, my brother Max, when he was 8 years old in a car accident in 1963. She wished she had been able to donate Max’s organs. So as Ethan’s condition worsened, we considered donation. On January 26, 2010, Ethan slipped into a coma. A recipient was located for Ethan’s kidneys and at 7:45 pm on January 28, 2010, with his parents and stepparents by his side, life support was removed and Ethan passed away. He was 8 years old. I miss him every day. However, I can’t express to you how glad I am that Ethan was able to save someone’s life. The recipient of both of Ethan’s kidneys is a 53 year old man who is finally living his life free of dialysis. Two men now have sight after receiving Ethan’s corneas. With the hustle and bustle of putting the finishing touches in place— applying the final coat of paint and moving in the furniture—it’s appropriate to remember all of the hard work and dedication that went into making our dream a reality. For more than four years, volunteers and staff at Gift of Life Donor Program have been working tirelessly to bring the Family House goals to fruition: caring for transplant patient caregivers by offering a safe, affordable place to stay, home-cooked meals and transportation to area transplant centers. And we couldn’t have done it without you, our supporters. Now that the Family House is opening its doors to the families, our work has only just begun. Sustaining the vision of the Family House is our top priority, which is why we rely on the generosity of friends, family and businesses, to help keep our pantries stocked, our kitchen warm with the smell of home-cooked meals and our operational needs met with financial contributions. ABOVE: Family House furnished first floor living room; UPPER RIGHT: completed exterior. Throughout this edition of Gift of Life News, you’ll find several unique opportunities to get involved with the Family House. We hope you’ll consider becoming a Home Cook Hero, hosting a Wish List Drive, or making a financial contribution in your name, or the name of a loved one or business. These are all important ways to stay connected to the Family House and our families. We are thrilled to be able to share them with you, and to welcome our guests, and all of our amazing supporters, home. What’s in a Name? LYNN FALLON For Gift of Life Family House board member and career transplant coordinator Lynn Fallon, making a financial contribution to the Family House seemed an appropriate way to memorialize her father and uncle, both of whom had received liver transplants. Fallon’s uncle, Jack Steinmetz, got sick in 1994, received a liver transplant and lived for 14 wonderful years. He passed away from unrelated causes. “Four years ago, my Dad, George (Steinmetz), was diagnosed with cirrhosis, at the age of 71, and he received a transplant,” says Fallon. “And he lived another 3-1/2 years, so both of them had many more birthdays, anniversaries and graduations to share with us.” continued on Family House page 2 Non-profit Org. Fallon’s yearly Casino Gala has helped to raise $25,000 for the Family House, which offered her the unique opportunity of naming a room at the house in their honor. Gift of Life Family House – Naming Opportunities PETRELLI and BOTTINO FAMILIES The Family House Naming Opportunities program allows you to place your name, the name of a loved one or your company’s name in a permanent place in the Family House. The Bottino family was looking for a way to remember Joe, who passed away on February 11, 2007 while hospitalized with liver failure. At the time of his death Joe was on the waiting list for a liver transplant, and the family wanted to raise awareness for organ and tissue donation. WARRIORS FOR TIM A seventh-grader at Unami Middle School, 13 year-old Tim Raymond loved sports, music and building. But shortly before Halloween 2009, Tim complained of a fever and didn’t quite seem himself. Several days later, the young football player was in the hospital, fighting H1N1 and additional infections that took every ounce of strength the young athlete could muster. Raymond fought the infection, which ravaged his small lungs for nearly four months. But on March 6, 2010, Tim Raymond passed away during the lung transplant procedure for which he had been waiting. “While our son Tim did receive a transplant,” say Tina and John, “his body had struggled for so long that he was not strong enough to make it through the surgery. We firmly believe that our son would be with us today if only a donor had been found sooner.” Join many others in becoming part of history... please visit www.GiftofLifeFamilyHouse.org for more information or contact Sara Cohen, Development Coordinator for more information at 215-599-2042 or [email protected]. Since that time, the Raymond’s have committed to raising $100,000 for the Family House fitness center, as well as holding a pantry item drive. 2 Start a new tradition and Become a Home Cook Hero! The Home Cook Heroes Program at Gift of Life Family House is a wonderful opportunity for volunteers to serve our families. Sign-up today! Frequently Asked Questions Q: Who provides the food for the meal? A: Your group is required to bring all food needed in your food preparation. We do have a pantry with basic food staples. Please call ahead to check or request to use our items. Q: How many people should we expect to serve? A: If providing a dinner, you will need to bring enough food for 50-60 people. If providing brunch (weekends only) purchase and prepare enough food for 30-40 people. The number of people staying at the House will determine the number expected to attend meals – you may call the House prior to your scheduled day for an estimate of the guest occupancy. Q: How many volunteers can participate for one meal? A: We must limit groups to a maximum of 10 volunteers and it is usually a 3 to 4 hour time commitment. If you have a group larger than 10 people we suggest breaking the group up in sections, for example: preparation and cleanup. Q: How do I sign up to become a Home Cook Hero? Family members and caregivers have similar emotional reactions. In addition to caregivers trying to support their family during the difficult wait process, they are also afraid of what could happen to their loved one. And lastly, anxiety for some may stem from the realization that someone else must pass away in order for them to live. Caregiver Lifeline Spotlight Symptoms of depression or anxiety should never go untreated or ignored. Some symptoms to watch out for are: increased or decreased sleep, increased or decreased appetite or weight loss or weight gain, crying spells, feelings of hopelessness, feelings of guilt, fatigue or loss of energy, or thoughts of suicide. People experience depression and anxiety differently, so symptoms may vary. by Talia Giordano, MSW, LSW Gift of Life Family House Social Worker Unraveling Emotional Issues While Awaiting a Transplant How do you get treatment if you feel depressed or anxious? Your transplant social worker can help you work through all of these feelings and then discuss further options for support or treatment if needed. Further treatment can include individual counseling, a support group, family counseling, or even medication. If you or a family member has thoughts of suicide, seek help immediately from your local hospital emergency room. Waiting to receive a new organ can be a long, trying process for patients and families alike. When initially being evaluated for a transplant, patients and families may be overwhelmed with many different medical appointments and tests and feel anxious and stressed by the new information and questions. Once a person is deemed eligible for a transplant and is listed, the constant contact with the transplant team may lessen and the patient and family are in a “holding pattern.” Their job is to wait. Anxiety and depression are often emotions experienced by patients and families during the wait and it can be very difficult for them to live their lives. Many patients and families can benefit from support groups as well – before or after a transplant. Support groups allow for a patient or their family or caregiver to express their feelings. Through the support of other transplant recipients, the patients and their families can talk to others who have gone through the same issues. Your transplant social worker can also help you locate a support group in your area. The Caregiver Lifeline Program at Gift of Life Family House can also be a resource for patients and their families if they are feeling lost. Visit www.GiftofLifeFamilyHouse.org for more information. One transplant recipient described the emotional strain the transplant process had on him and his wife, especially during the “wait process” for a new organ. He described it as being full of “ups and downs” while waiting, and he needed the support of his transplant social worker. Patients and families do not deserve to feel sad or lonely while waiting for a new life. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from your transplant social worker, or the Family House Social Worker. Just because someone is awaiting their transplant and a second chance at life doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have a satisfying and meaningful life while they are waiting. Why would someone become upset when they are waiting for a new life? Many recipients have described being anxious daily because they didn’t know if they would have to quickly get to the hospital that day. Others have described the fear of dying if they didn’t get their new organ Family House Events Paver Program April 10 Annual MAC Pre-Dash Brunch for Family House Jack’s Firehouse, Philadelphia, PA the families of transplant recipients who will be staying at the Family House.
