he Archdiocese of Philadelphia honored the Connelly Foundation
in March 2015 with a Distinguished Graduate Award. The event
honors recipients whose vision, generosity, and shared commitment
to living a Catholic life have inspired an appreciation for Catholic
education. The Connelly Foundation personifies this commitment.
Founded by John and Josephine Connelly in 1955, the Foundation
places philanthropic emphasis on Catholic education. Countless
young men and women have been provided the opportunity to
receive an outstanding Catholic education at Shanahan as Neumann
Scholars through the Neumann Scholars Program (see below Joe
Brady ’11 and Lily Quiroz ’11). Parochial grade schools and high
schools alike receive funds from the Foundation for scholarships.
Visiting the Connelly Foundation website, you witness their dedication to others (http://www.connellyfdn.org/). “Ever mindful of the
spirit of its founders, John and Josephine Connelly, and inspired by
their faith, vision and courage, the Foundation assists members of the
community attain more fulfilling and productive lives by providing
incentives to learn, encouragement to achieve and reasons to hope.”
Bishop Shanahan High School has also been the recipient of
Connelly grants which enrich academic programs. From laptops,
string instruments, language lab, Interwrite pads and Vernier probes,
to funding the JVLA (Jesuit Virtual Learning Academy) program
– their generosity is boundless. The Bishop Shanahan band was
named to greet Pope Francis when he arrived in Philadelphia – the
Connelly Foundation funded the indoor/outdoor band instruments!
Thank you to the Foundation for making this dream possible for our
students!!
Now celebrating its 60th Anniversary, the Foundation is guided
by an 18-member Board of Trustees, with Josephine Connelly
Mandeville CEO, Emily Connelly Riley EVP, and Victoria K. Flaville
COO at its helm. The Connelly Foundation is mindful that the aim of
Catholic education is for students to flourish intellectually, morally,
and spiritually, and they remain dedicated to this mission. Truly….
the Connelly Foundation has a Noble Heart!!

fter taking the first-ever pre-engineering course with Dr. Lottes/Mrs. Moore
my junior year back in 2010, I decided I
wanted to pursue engineering. Through AP
Chemistry with Mrs. Ansley and a heavy
dose of Mr. Finley my senior year, I decided
on chemical engineering. Fast forward four
years, and over a year of experience at
GlaxoSmithKline and Johnson & Johnson,
and I am about to start a PhD program
at MIT (with acceptances to Berkeley,
Princeton, Penn, and other top schools). I
was also humbled to receive the Chemical
Engineering Department medallion at
Villanova University’s graduation as well as
the award for the top overall student in the
College of Engineering graduating class of
2015. I will always be thankful for my time
at Shanahan not just for the opportunities
which I’ve been given, but the moral compass necessary to pursue them.
f you are looking for proof of Shanahan’s
excellence in academics, look no further than Villanova University’s 2015
Commencement. I was honored to graduate
summa cum laude, receive the Electrical
Engineering Department medallion, and
watch my fellow Shanahan graduate, Joseph
Brady, receive many accolades. I could
not have been more proud of the invaluable foundation that Shanahan had given
to us. At Villanova, I had the honor of
being a Presidential Scholar, participate in
a study abroad program in Madrid, Spain,
and spend a couple of spring breaks in
Nicaragua and Panama with Engineers
Without Borders. I work at Lockheed Martin
in their Mission Systems and Training division in Moorestown, NJ. I am in Lockheed’s
Engineering Leadership Development
Program which includes four 9-month rotations and participation in a Master’s program. I am grateful for all Shanahan gave me
that has allowed me to be where I am now.

That image went around the world and is still touching hearts and lives. In this

shows to each one of us by a kiss on the forehead when we are in need.

I hope you have felt it throughout this year. As I have often reminded our students,
when you need a special grace draw on the blessing that Pope Francis gave you. It
was real and meant for the BSHS community. Pope Francis himself has emphasized
that “The Face of God is Mercy.” We have seen that face in the merciful, loving face
of Pope Francis. Let’s remember that throughout this “Year of Mercy” by receiving
God’s free gift of mercy in our lives and then passing it on to others.
As we reflect on “Noble Hearts” in this issue of our magazine, we give thanks
to God for so many noble and faith-filled people who live the mission of BSHS as
“People of God and People for Others.” God bless you all!

Shanahan Welcomes Pope
The “Pope-formance” of a Lifetime
By: Eileen Mostyn ’17 from “ShanaViews”
T
he adventure began in July when
Bishop Shanahan’s Marching Band was
informed of the exciting news that they were
going to play for Pope Francis as he landed
in Philadelphia for the World Meeting of
Families. Two months, two television programs, thirteen songs, and countless hours
of practice later, the moment finally arrived
for the band to greet the Holy Father at the
airport.
September 26 was an early day with all
80 band members leaving school at 5:00
A.M. to get to the city on time. After arriving at Philadelphia International Airport, the
band warmed up, marched onto the tarmac,
and waited anxiously for the arrival of Pope
Francis.
At 9:30 A.M. the leader of the Catholic
Church stepped into Philadelphia with the
iconic “Gonna Fly Now” ringing in the air.
Pope Francis was greeted by Mayor Nutter
and Governor Wolf. He climbed into his car,
circled around, and waved to the faithful
who had come to see him.
What happened next made a true impact
on the band and on the world. As the final
notes of “Ode to Joy” rang out, the pontiff
spotted Band Director Chuck Keating’s son,
Michael, and asked his driver to stop. The
ten-year old suffers from cerebral palsy, and
Pope Francis wanted to bless him before
continuing with the rest of his trip.
Total silence overtook the crowd as His
Holiness blessed Michael and kissed his forehead before shaking hands with Mr. and Mrs.
Keating as well as Sister Maureen and Sister
Regina. There was not a dry eye as everyone
looked on at the emotional moment.
“It was surreal,” Jennie McIntyre, a senior
flute player, said. “Our ShanaBand is truly a
family. Seeing one of our brothers, Michael,
blessed and kissed by the pope was truly

beautiful beyond words.”
Immediately, the news of the Pope’s magnificent act spread. It was featured on several different news stations, and many inspiring articles about the Pope’s beautiful deed
were published on websites, such as Time
Magazine and People.com.
The whole Keating family was interviewed on Fox and Friends the day after the
Pope’s arrival.
In the month that followed, however,
there were even greater miracles to come.
A reporter from the Washington Post
stayed with the Keating family, visited
Michael’s school, and eventually wrote an
in-depth article describing what life is like
for them and what has changed since their
interaction with Pope Francis.
After posting the article online, a fundraising website was set up to raise money
for a new van with a wheelchair lift for the
Keatings.
Within hours of the article being published, the money raised had skyrocketed.
J.J. Abrams, famous for his work on the TV
show, Lost, and director of the newest Star
Wars movie donated $50,000 to the cause.
Over $133,000 has been raised.
The attention the Keating family has been
given is a true blessing, and it is a beautiful thing to see such deserving people be
rewarded for their faith.
It is truly fantastic that the “Pope Francis
effect” has not faded away, and it is still very
much a reality even after the pontiff left
Philadelphia.
The entire band is grateful to Mr. Keating,
the administration, and everyone who helped
them to have such an amazing opportunity, including, of course, Pope Francis. This
experience will surely be cherished for a lifetime by everyone who was involved.

Noble Leadership
S
ister Maureen Lawrence McDermott,
IHM was named Superintendent of
Secondary Schools for the Archdiocese of
Philadelphia on Tuesday, August 18, 2015.
A dedicated leader at Bishop Shanahan for
14 years, Sr. Maureen will share her educational expertise with the 17 archdiocesan
secondary schools. Christopher Mominey,
Chief Operating Officer and Secretary for
Catholic Education, said that the search for
a new Superintendent extended outside the
five-county archdiocese. He explained, “It
quickly became clear that our profile was
matched right here in our own school system
with a talented and proven leader who has
served our schools well over the past four
decades.”
While serving at Shanahan, Sister
Maureen led the students to a broader global
view during the Middle States process. Her
vision was to make Shanahan students contributing members of a global society stating,
“Our graduates will be moral stewards who
accept their responsibility to create a social
and cultural atmosphere which promotes
the common good. Shanahan alumni strive
to be motivated young adults who are academically prepared, emotionally mature, and
spiritually developed to meet the challenges
of the future. Our graduates will be lifelong
learners who have the necessary foundation
to be productive members of the Church and
society.”
In April 2015, Sister Maureen entered
the national stage as a speaker at the NCEA
Convention in Orlando, FL. Dr. Carolyn
Woo, President and CEO of Catholic Relief
Services was a keynote speaker. Sr. Maureen’s
topic “Becoming a High School with a Global
View and a Noble Heart” covered Bishop
Shanahan’s journey of actions and activities
to becoming a CRS Global High School. The
Shanahan school community was presented
the platinum award by the Catholic Relief
Service during the Thanksgiving liturgy in
2014 and signified the strengthening of the
Shanahan commitment to be “People of God
and People for Others.”
Leo Parsons ’78, Bishop Shanahan’s
Advisory Board Chairman stated at Sr.
Maureen’s farewell celebration: “She is a
visionary!” God bless you Sr. Maureen for
all you do for Catholic education! May your
vision bring many blessings to Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia!
Introducing the New Faces in Administration
Mr. Michael J. McArdle takes the helm as the 10th principal of
Bishop Shanahan High School. Mr. McArdle is not new to BSHS; he
served on the administration from 2000-2004 as Assistant Principal
for Academic Affairs. He went on to become President of Archbishop
Ryan High School and then Director of Financial Aid and Scholarship
Programs for the Office of Catholic Education. Mr. McArdle is passionate about Catholic education and his experience will serve him
well at Bishop Shanahan!
Mrs. Teresa Dellicompagni is the new Assistant Principal for
Student Affairs. “Mrs. Delli” came to Bishop Shanahan in 2013 as a
faculty member in the Business & Technology Department. She is the
founding moderator of the DECA club (business club) and a former
coach of the BSHS freshman cheerleading team.
Mr. Robert Seefeldt is the new Assistant Principal for Student
Services. Mr. Seefeldt came to Shanahan after teaching assignments at
Archbishop Carroll HS and Kennedy-Kenrick HS. He began as a faculty member of the Business & Technology department in 2007 and
became chairperson of that department in 2011. He has also serves as

Pope Dedicated 2015 as “The Year of Consecrated Life”
P
ointing to the importance of religious
vocations, Pope Francis announced
that the year 2015 would be dedicated to
Consecrated Life. In speaking of the mission
and identity of consecrated life, the Pope
remarked that a “radical approach is required
of all Christians, but religious persons are
called upon to follow the Lord in a special
way: They are men and woman who can
awaken the world.” The Holy Father went
on to say, “Consecrated life is prophecy. God
asks us to fly the nest and to be sent to the
frontiers of the world, avoiding the temptation to ’domesticate’ them. This is the most
concrete way of imitating the Lord” (“Pope
Dedicates 2015 to ’Year of Consecrated Life’.”
29 Nov. 2013. Zenit. Online. 3 Sep. 2014).
Shanahan acknowledged the noble hearts of
our IHM sisters at a Mass held in May followed by a small reception afterwards.
While their backgrounds may be diverse,
it is what they share that unites this special
group of women—namely their passion and
commitment to living the vowed consecrated
life and sharing the faith. During this year’s
Distinguished Graduate Award Ceremony,
the Office of Catholic Education recognized
the Sisters (all orders) for their service to
the Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of
Philadelphia and to the Church.
Remembering Sister Therese Maureen Colavechio

of the Sister Servants of
the Immaculate Heart of
Mary for years. One faithful IHM servant was
Sr. Therese Maureen Colavechio. She began
her career at Bishop Shanahan High School
teaching in the religion department from
September 1987 until 1998 and then serving
as Assistant to the Vice Principal of Student
Services until her retirement in June 2014.
She faithfully served 64 years of religious life
working in the elementary and secondary
schools in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia
and the Dioceses of Harrisburg and Arlington
before her passing in April 2015. Upon
hearing this news, many shared their love,
thoughts and experiences with Sr. Therese
with the main theme being “she was tough,
but she was fair!” Thousands of young men
and women were touched by Sr. Therese’s
dedication to her IHM ministry!
Amanda Dolan Riddle ’97 What a wonderful

Sr. Maureen Peter, IHM Every time I read
this, I think of Sr. Therese and I miss her…
Michele Fischer ’94 I remember she would

that others could see our miraculous medals!
So funny and down to earth. I really learned
a lot about my faith from Sister Therese.
This is what we are about:
We plant seeds that one day will grow.
We water seeds already planted, knowing that
they hold future promise.
We lay foundations that will need further
development.
We provide yeast that produces effects beyond
our capabilities.
Teri Anne Lalik Definitely one of my favorites... RIP Sister
Michelle Boyko-Mazur ’94 So sad! I loved
her! She was a breath of fresh air and totally
awesome! She will be missed by many.
Mary Ann She was so memorable! She had
a kind heart, a loving spirit, one heck of a
personality. She will be missed!
Sister Maria Francina Travis, IHM, St. Agnes
High School ’45 (From a morning working in
the laundry at Camilla Hall) Sister Therese
comes in and with her cheery voice says,
“Good morning boys and girls!” Everyone
gives her a smile back with “Good morning
Sister!” to start our day. What fun we have as
we all work on! Great memories!
We cannot do everything
and there is a sense of liberation in realizing
that.
This enables us to do something, and to do it
very well.
It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning,
a step along the way, an opportunity for
God’s grace to enter and do the rest.
We may never see the end results,
but that is the difference between the master
builder and the worker.
We are workers, not master builders, ministers, not messiahs.
We are prophets of a future not our own.

Faith and Service are Integral to Athletics
A
thletics at Shanahan go well beyond the
gymnasium, the stadium and the fields.
Faith and service are integral parts of their
athletic program, so in addition to the students’ busy academic and practice schedules,
they make time for these important aspects
of student life as well. “People of God; People
for Others” is a phrase that Bishop Shanahan
High School instills in its students and they
strive to live it every day.
After the recent completion of the $2
million stadium renovation project to install
new lights, turf, and track, the team captains
of all the Fall sports joined School Minister
Fr. John Donia, the administration, and
invited guests at a ceremony to bless the new
track and field. During the various sports seasons, many of the teams hold “team Masses”
at the school chapel. Assistant Principal and
former Assistant Football Coach Bob Seefeldt
said, “Whether in the classroom, on stage, or
in the athletic arena, we all strive to celebrate
the gifts we’ve been given.”
Going hand in hand with faith is service,
and Shanahan athletes spend many hours

For the fourth year in a row, the Walker
family (Jane ’71, James ’74, P’09, ’10)
held a used clothing drive to support the
University of Pennsylvania’s Center for
Studies of Addiction (CSA). They collected
13,763 pounds of clothing, linens, bikes,
etc. This was 2,624 more pounds than
last year! Because of this, they were able
to donate $3,077.56 to Penn’s CSA in
memory of James ’09. This donation is

Noble Alumna continues to serve Shanahan
Excerpts from Sr. Regina’s presentation of the 2015 Shanahan Medal Award
I
n 2002, the BSHS Administration initiated
the conferring of the Shanahan Medal
at graduation. This medal is awarded to
a person whose commitment, dedication,
and contribution to Catholic education and
deserve the recognition and gratitude of the
entire Bishop Shanahan Community. The
three words engraved on the medal are:
Service, Commitment, and Dedication.
This year we are very happy to be able to
honor one of our own--a Shanahan graduate from the class of 1963, a truly generous, spirit filled and dedicated person,
who has lived a life of service sharing the
spirit of Bishop Shanahan High School over
30 years as Varsity Cheerleading Coach,
Assistant Librarian, Senior Class Moderator,
Homecoming Advisor, Chairperson of the
Golden Anniversary Celebration and so
much more--wherever she could be of assistance. She is a great generator of school
spirit. Captain of her own high school cheerleading squad, she has continued cheering
throughout her life, inspiring “a nation” of
young women to proudly represent BSHS.
On a daily basis, she interacts with and
encourages our students to be the best they
can be. She also generously serves in her
parish and in her local community of West
Chester.
Married to John Riccardo, BSHS class of
1959, they have been blessed with 4 children
and 19 grandchildren.
Today, we are delighted to bestow the
Shanahan Medal on Nancy Giunta Riccardo,
a life-long cheerleader who shares her smile,
her energy and enthusiasm, and her love
of life with everyone she meets. Her lively

T
ne of my personal favorite songs is
“You Get What You Give” by the New
Radicals. And I believe that the title of that
song is one of the most important lessons I
have learned throughout my time at Bishop
Shanahan. By giving back to this wonderful
school community through my involvement
in NHS and Student Council, I have truly
grown as a young man and a person of God
over the past four years. Now, you may call
me a nerd, but the fondest memories in my
life usually reference working an event at
Shanahan or even just sitting in classes in
this very building, with my loyal friends next
me and our marvelous teachers at the front
of the room. There is nothing more fulfilling than knowing you have helped someone
in need, and so I have two very important
words for all of my classmates: Give back.
Jesus once said, “It is more blessed to give
than to receive,” and by giving back to those
in need, we build a stronger relationship
with ourselves, others, and especially, God.
If you give back, you will experience an overwhelming sense of happiness. Giving back is
like a Catholic school kid’s drug. Once you
start, you are hooked, and in a good way.
hroughout our lives, we have had to
travel down many roads. Luckily for
us, we have an amazing tool to guide us
along the way, a sort of personal navigation
system. We have relied on this system
countless times in our cars, but without
realizing it, we have also relied on a
navigation system of a different sort each
day. Our lives are a journey striving to
arrive at one destination; guiding us along
this route is our own personal navigator…
God. He has a roadmap for each and every
one of us, and today we are taking a new
road on our adventure.
Today, we the graduates Bishop
Shanahan are headed in a new direction.
Earl Nightingale once said, “All you need
is the plan, the road map, and the courage
to press on to your destination.” You have
reached the stopping point of your high
school graduation. Now allow God to be the
voice of your navigation system and show
you the right path. Be courageous,… buckle
up… and be ready for the next stage of your
life. Congratulations to the members of the
class of 2015.

A Special “White Christmas” Performance
T
he Fine Arts department at Bishop
Shanahan High School presented their
Fall musical White Christmas for guests with
special needs on Thursday, November 19th.
Admission was free for this special performance. Shanahan offered six performances
to the general public, plus this additional
show to accommodate children and adults
with physical disabilities, autism, and other
special needs.
The idea for the special performance
came about this past summer when BSHS
band parent, Mary Jaramillo, discovered a
website for the Theater Development Fund
(TDF) which has a Theater Accessibility
Program. This program promotes adapted
theater performances which enable these
theater-goers to enjoy the performance in a
comfortable, calming setting. The idea was
presented to show producer and conductor,
Chuck Keating, and the school administration who thought this was a wonderful
opportunity for the Shanahan students to
serve their community.
Under advice from TDF, the full-length
performance was modified. The lights in the
auditorium were not dark but dimmed so
that the guests were always aware of their
surroundings.
The full orchestra was replaced with a
piano so the noise level remained low and
calm. The cast, crew and audience were
warm, welcoming, and understanding of the
special needs of those attending the show.
Two special “break rooms” were available
for anyone who felt the need to take a time
out from the activity. One of the rooms, the
auxiliary gym, had cushioned mats on the
floor for anyone who needed to rest.
The Jaramillos assembled 200 trinket
boxes with small toys and other assorted
items to occupy these special guests while
watching the play. Flyers promoting the special White Christmas performance were sent
to surrounding schools and agencies such as
The Chester County Intermediate Unit, Child
and Career Development Center, Devereux,
Downingtown Area School District, The Arc
of Chester County, Our Lady of Confidence
Day School, and others.
The musical had over 200 students participate as cast and crew under the direction
of Keating, director David Frantz, and music
director Marge Campbell.

Restoring Smiles – A Noble Mission
Excerpts from Daily Local News, by Monica Thompson Fragale, For Digital First Media
E
very time Kathy Finegan ’67 travels to a third-world country,
she leaves behind smiles! The smiles belong to children, teenagers and even adults who had been ostracized for facial deformities,
who had trouble eating and speaking, or who didn’t have the appropriate medical care to make a difference in their lives - until Finegan
and other volunteers from Operation Smile entered their lives!
Finegan, an emergency room nurse from West Chester, volunteers
with Operation Smile, an international nonprofit medical organization that helps repair cleft lips and palates and other facial deformities
in poverty-stricken areas worldwide. “I took my first trip in 2007,”
Finegan said in a telephone interview. “Thirty-three trips later I’m
still in love with it.” She was recently honored with the organization’s
Donna Poe-Davis Award for Excellence in Nursing. Finegan, whose
duties with the organization include pre- and post-nursing during the
surgeries, was described by Operation Smile as “the ideal volunteer.”
“She is the nurse you want to have training all of the other nurses,”
according to a press release from the organization. “She is wonderful
with patients and their families.”
Finegan worked as an emergency room nurse in Philadelphia,
serves as part of a team who perform the often life-changing surgeries. In March of 2015 she traveled to Myanmar; in May to Nicaragua;
in July to the Congo; and the Philippines in August.
“It’s quite an eye opener to see how the majority of the world lives
and how we can make a difference,” she said. “It changes their lives.”
Cleft lips and palates occur during pregnancy and result in openings
in the lips or mouths of the babies. Finegan explained that facial and
oral deformities are often seen in countries as supernatural in nature,
or as errors on the part of the mothers. Those born with cleft lips or
palates or other facial deformities can be ostracized. The free surger-

ies, Finegan said, “change their lives.” Two years ago, when she was
in the Congo with Operation Smile, Finegan met a 79-year-old man
who wanted his facial deformities repaired. “He lived with it all those
years,” she said. “It was quite moving.”
Operation Smile dispatches a team of nurses, anesthesiologists,
plastic surgeons, dentists, psychologists, operating room and recovery
room nurses, medical records specialists, and others – all managed
by a project coordinator. “It’s amazing to watch 40 to 50 strangers
interact, and within two days act as a team,” Finegan said.
Finegan’s passion for the work that Operation Smile does is obvious when she talks. “It’s such an amazing organization,” she said.
While she works part-time in the ER these days, Finegan said she
wants to take full advantage of working with Operation Smile. “I’m at
retirement age but I keep on going,” she said. “They know I’m available for last-minute add-ons. Operation Smile has provided me a lot
of opportunities.”

Alumna aims to boost Coatesville’s image
Excerpts from “The Philadelphia Inquirer”
(Michaelle Bond, Staff Writer)
W
hen Sarah Alderman ’99 was a real
estate agent a few years ago, clients
said they would live anywhere in Chester
County except Coatesville. She came across
a shirt she assumes someone made as a joke
that outraged her. The front said, ’Friends
don’t let friends live in Coatesville.’ “I think
the reputation is a bigger issue than any real
issue,” Alderman said.
As Coatesville continues to work toward
a revitalization that has stalled for decades,
Alderman, 34, is one of the people trying
to improve the city’s image for residents
and potential businesses and developers.
Alderman, a fourth-generation Coatesville
native, is a writer and photographer working on an online, interactive documentary
about the city called Bypassed: The Coatesville
Project. The website is to combine film, photographs, and written stories of current and
former members of the community.
Alderman lives in Unionville, but she said
her heart is in Coatesville. Her goal is to capture the city “in a really honest but beautiful
way, but not a puff commercial.” About 25
people of various ages and backgrounds are
on Alderman’s list of interviewees.
She feels a deep connection to Coatesville,
a city she describes as having “grit” and
“authenticity.” Alderman’s great-grandfather
owned a grocery store on Coates Street. Her
grandmother, whom Alderman describes as
one of her heroes, worked at the store and
passed on her pride for Coatesville.
A few years ago, Alderman worked on a
community storytelling project for National
Geographic focusing on the Oglala Lakota
people of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation
in South Dakota. The project inspired her to
do something similar for the city she loves.
“The way she was so passionate about
coming back home to where she was born
and telling the story of the city and its
people — it’s what the city deserves,” said
Aadil Malik, a spoken-word poet who lives
in Coatesville. Dorothy Carter, the 92-yearold widow of Coatesville artist Lee Carter,
will also share her story for the documentary. She has spent her whole life in the
Coatesville area and helped integrate its
schools in the 1950s.
Ross Kershey, 82, who taught history in
Coatesville for 42 years, said, “There are a
lot of people, including Sarah, that are seeing to it that Coatesville has some kind of
rebirth and are making Coatesville a better
place right now.”

From Community Activist to Philadelphia
Managing Director
Excerpts by Claudia Vargas, INQUIRER STAFF WRITER
M
ichael DiBerardinis was preaching his personal gospel to
parks and recreation directors from across the country, about
the importance of working with the people they serve. “You have to
value citizen engagement, you have to value citizen involvement,” he
told the group at the Free Library of Philadelphia’s Skyline Room,
where they had gathered for a two-day conference. “You have to not
only believe in it, but you have to invest in it.” And it’s something
DiBerardinis has done for almost his entire adult life.
It helps explain why the city’s longtime recreation czar was
recruited by Mayor Jim Kenney to be Philadelphia’s next managing
director - because of his skill at bringing government and community
together. That’s a skill he has honed since his activist days in the
1970s, when he fought to get homes for Kensington’s poor and have
a high school built.
Mike DiBerardinis took the No. 2 job in City Hall on Jan. 4th. He
will oversee more than a dozen departments, including police, fire,
water, and streets. Good luck, Mike!

Shanahan Flashes Back!
Remember the
Fire of 1979?
Reprinted from the Spring 2003 “Eaglespeak” newsletter. Article submitted by Kellie Knox ’81 (deceased), Vice President Alumni Association
I
t started on Ash Wednesday, March 8,
1979. A short circuit on a radio alarm
clock started a fire that caused over $100,000
damage to the old Shanahan High School
located in West Chester.
The fire damaged six administrative office
and the adjoining school cafeteria as well as
smoke damage throughout the school, but it
did not dampen the hearts and souls of the
staff, teachers, and students.
Shanahan was closed the rest of the
week. But students started arriving Thursday
morning about 9:00 a.m. loaded with rags,
buckets, and a lot of love. You might say they
were moved or enlightened! No one told
them to come, no one even hinted that they
should come. But they came ready for cleanup duty. The blaze, besides destroying the
offices, deeply charred the adjoining cafeteria
wall. The residue—the black smoke, heavy
coat of soot, ashes and dirty water entered
virtually every corner of the building.
Teachers, parents and Dr. Valenti were
amazed. Wow! Could this be our students
There were about two hundred students and
another one hundred who wanted to come
but were asked to stay home. They say you
get back what you give: that day we
gave our best.
We’ve kept it a secret for many years.
Who would believe us? Could we rise to the
occcasion? We never wanted to be labeled
“perfect,” just proud! We were proud of a
school that cared enough to teach us right
from wrong.
Our school taught us how to love—a love
that was expressed that day in the work we
devoted to our school.
Forgive me for letting you in on our
secret. I just thought it was time to let everyone know!
Noble students rallied to clean their school.

A Noble Calling – Catholic Education
“Those who instruct others unto justice shall shine like stars for all eternity.”
— Daniel 12:3
C
ongratulations to the two Shanahan Alumni who are principals of two of the three diocesan elementary schools that were
named 2015 National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence! Mary Kay
Conahan Hennessy ’75, P’00, ’04 is principal of St. Norbert School
in Paoli. Bruce Hagy ’68 is principal of Our Mother of Consolation
Elementary School in Philadelphia. The third diocesan elementary
school is St. Agnes in West Chester led by principal Sister Joan Felicia
O’Reilly, IHM. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors
public and private elementary, middle and high schools where
students perform at very high levels. All three schools were named
Exemplary High Performing Schools.
“We at St. Norbert are extremely humbled to be recognized as a
Blue Ribbon school,” said Principal Mary Kay Hennessy. “It is a great
honor and a testament to the dedication of our whole school community - the faculty, staff, students and parents. We look forward to
flying the Blue Ribbon flag, and continuing to reach for new heights.”
“Receiving the 2015 National Blue Ribbon award validates the
hard work of our entire community – faculty, staff, students, and
parents,” said Mr. Bruce Hagy, principal of OMC. “We have always
reached for academic excellence, and this recognition only serves to
publicize what we already know – OMC Parish School is an exceptional place for students to learn and thrive.”
The schools were honored at a ceremony November 9 and 10,
2015 in Washington, D.C. In addition to presentations, networking
and small group discussions, awardees attended a special awards luncheon. School representatives went onstage to be greeted by Program
Director Aba Kumi and receive the National Blue Ribbon School flag
and an engraved plaque as symbols of their success. All three schools
were also honored and recognized by the state with the Keystone
Award of Excellence in Hershey, PA on December 6th.
Congratulations on continuing the tradition of excellence in
education in Catholic schools. BSHS is proud of you!!

The Glory
of Truth
1949 Kathleen M. Shay penned a
noble poem!
Bright diamonds seem such priceless things,
So do the riches of great kings;
Thus, too, the lily soft and white,
And the lone northern star at night.
Yet as we stop to ponder long,
We see a loving pow’r more strong.
’Tis Truth with worth beyond all bounds—
Triumphantly its note resounds;
And by the honest man ’tis heard—
Through him its glory is conferred.
But as tarnish comes to gold,
And often weeds the victors hold,
So Truth concealed and dim will be
Unless upheld for all to see.
“Uphold the Truth” must be our cry;
For God, Truth’s Source, we’ll do or die.
What nobler motive to contend?
What better cause can we defend?
— Kathleen M. Shay

What attracts students to Shanahan?
I
believe the number one reason students are attracted to Bishop Shanahan is the welcoming
community feeling and the faith-filled environment. Our students achieve great academic
success with excellent course offerings, competitive athletic teams, award-winning Fine Arts
programs and a variety of clubs. But it’s the administration, teachers and coaches all working
together to complement each other in the formation of our students that sets us apart. The
result is well-rounded life-long learners who are prepared to meet the challenges of college/
university and eventually become contributing members of a global society. In other words,
they are “People of God; People for Others.”

A Great Way to Support Catholic Education!
T
he long tradition of supporting Catholic
education and students in need of
financial assistance continued this year at
Bishop Shanahan High School’s 9th Annual
Endowment Fund Golf Outing. The event
was blessed through French Creek Golf Club’s
beautifully presented course and the perfect
game day weather. Over 100 golfers joined
on game day as supportive representatives of
the various corporate sponsors, community
partners, past parents, current parents, alumni,
and friends who know and love BSHS.
After golfing had finished around the
course, everyone enjoyed a relaxing evening
of fine dining with a raw food bar and various carving stations. Good conversation and
comaraderie were to follow, as well as awards
for the top foursomes and a putting contest
whose final contestant came within three feet
of winning the $10,000 prize!

Introducing SPE! Tax Credit Program no longer limited to businesses…
Y
ou may now direct your PERSONAL Pennyslvania tax dollars to
students attending Bishop Shanahan High School…YOU could
make a difference in the life of one of our students. Pennsylvania
has made it possible for interested parties to join a “Special Purpose
Entity” (SPE) which applies for tax credits on behalf of its members
to offset their personal PA income.
“Special Purpose Entity” has been established to apply for and
utilize the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program or
the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) program to offset
personal PA income of the respective members. Bishop Shanahan
High School is a designated recipient of these funds which are used
to assist our students-in-need.
The following individuals may participate in an SPE:
• Owners of existing businesses that may have owners/partners who
do not wish to participate in the EITC or OSTC program or that
may want to participate in an amount different than their ownership percentage. Owners could be partners in a professional practice, including: CPA firm, Law firm, Dental group, Medical group.
• Employees of Pennsylvania businesses
• Shareholders (including retirees) of Pennsylvania businesses
The goals of the SPE are to solicit members, apply for the credit,
receive capital from its members upon approval, and disburse funds
to EITC and OSTC organizations – namely BISHOP SHANAHAN
HIGH SCHOOL!
You may PERSONALLY join the PA Tax Credit Program — even if you do
not own your own business!

from businesses who have directed their tax credit dollars
over the past four years,” asserted Anthony Fiorenza ’72,

and a local business owner. “This number will probably
increase as the SPE will permit many more individuals to
participate and to dedicate funds to benefit our studentsin-need.”
