A Message From the Headmaster
Hillside School’s mission of creating an environment that supports the students as they “develop
academically, physically, spiritually, and socially” is truly upheld and propagated by the School’s
five core values of compassion, determination, honesty, respect and fun. I believe that it is
through these core values that Hillside is able to carry out its unique approach of balancing
attention to the individual student’s needs while remaining aware and supportive of the group
and overall community. To be sure, the student’s lessons in math, science, language, literature
and the arts are of the utmost importance in our effort to prepare the boys for secondary school,
but those lessons are tempered with our core values - as we strive give them not only the tools to
succeed academically, but also as young gentlemen.
Without a doubt, your financial contributions have everything to do with the School’s ability to
provide the boys with unmatched educational programs and extraordinary middle school experiences.
Individual contributions, together with events such as the Spring Fling Auction and the Annual
Hillside Golf Tournament, provide vital resources to the School. The 2012 - 2013 Annual Fund was
a resounding success. We raised over $570,000 for the Annual Fund and, equally as important,
kept our donor base strong, receiving contributions from over 400 donors throughout the Hillside
community. We also were able to add an additional $175,000 to our ongoing capital campaign for
a new athletic facility on campus.
In addition to the standard classroom curriculums, 2012-13 also saw the boys enjoy outdoor
adventure trips focused on team-building, lunchtime performances by our own “Boys In Blue”
choir, student art displays in our common areas, and highly successful seasons for our many
athletic teams, especially hockey, basketball and soccer. You can be proud that your generosity
made these opportunities available to the Hillside boys.
At the heart of our work with middle school boys is an incredibly talented faculty and staff who
share a passion for learning and who genuinely appreciate the individuality of each of the students. And so I send congratulations and thanks to all of the employees for their efforts and unfaltering dedication.
Great teaching notwithstanding, we simply could not provide the full Hillside experience for our
boys without the financial contributions of our many donors. In recognition of that tremendous
generosity, I trust that the five core values instilled in the students will bring at least some of the
Hillside magic to the greater community.
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
David Z. Beecher
Headmaster

Hillside Parent and Family Association
Special thanks to our HPFA volunteers and Spring Fling Auction and Raffle donors!
While gifts to the Annual Fund and The Campaign for Hillside are essential to meeting the
School’s basic needs, we are also fortunate to benefit from funds raised by the Hillside Parent
and Family Association (HPFA)
throughout the year to support
special projects and initiatives.
During the 2013 fiscal year,
faculty members were able to
purchase items to enrich their
classrooms, the professional development budget was increased,
and outstanding events for parents, students, and staff were
held all thanks to the work of our
HPFA volunteers and the generosity of Spring Fling Auction and
Raffle Donors.

The Campaign for Hillside
Vision in Motion
The Campaign for Hillside, a capital improvement
program, was initiated by Headmaster Beecher
and a committed group of trustees to expand and
update Hillside’s physical plant. Through a concerted effort to raise funds for capital projects and
the generosity of Campaign donors, we reached
the Phase I fundraising goal of $8 million. The
library was renovated and the campus has since
grown to include a Student Center, new residential houses, and a modern Academic and Health
Center.
Looking ahead, the Capital Steering Committee
has focused its sights on the construction of the
Hillside Athletic Center, which will feature three
indoor basketball courts, home/visitor locker rooms, a fitness room, a wrestling/multi-purpose
room, and a yoga “treehouse.” With more than $11 million raised toward a $15 million goal
for Phase II of the Campaign, we are thrilled to see the completion of our ambitious – and once
thought to be unattainable – Campaign objectives within reach.
