Dear Parishioners,
In the Gospel this weekend, we hear
the wonderful response of the Lord,
“Martha, Martha, you are anxious about
many things”. I suppose it would not
be hard for the Lord to suggest to
most of us that we are anxious about
many things. In recent weeks we have
focused on the ongoing challenges of
violence and racial strife in our country.
The presidential election has people
on both sides wondering about the
outcome, and in all of our families there
can be more than enough things to be
“anxious” about.

with rich themes about
hospitality, service, and
finding the right balance
between action and
prayerful attention to the
Lord. Christians who are
good stewards of their
faith life realize that if
they are too busy to enjoy
peaceful, private time with
the Lord, then something
is out of balance in their
spirituality. If we make
time for Mass, but then
carry on with our busy
schedules without prayer,
meditation and reflection,
we are missing out. If we
find ourselves anxious
and harried by life’s
routines, could it be a
sign that something in
our spiritual life needs
some serious attention?

There is a message of wonderful
reassurance in the scriptures that can
calm us. Paul’s letter this weekend
reminds us that in Christ we find hope,
all else is secondary. In the Gospel,
Mary sits beside the Lord. She has
chosen the better part. The Lord keeps
inviting us to bring our struggles and
fears to Him. We must keep developing
our spiritual life so that the power of
Christ’s love for us can prevail against
the storms that can come our way.
Later this summer we will be formally
launching our capital campaign, “To
Teach Who Christ Is”. The Archdiocese
is mandating all parishes to participate
in this campaign which will help
stabilize the educational ministries
of the Archdiocese and provide
much needed resources for every
parish to address current and future
needs. We are in the initial phase of
preparing for this campaign. In coming
weeks you will be hearing about the
projects that have been identified by
the Parish Pastoral Council and The
Finance Council that we hope could be
addressed by the funds raised by the
campaign. These projects touch almost
every aspect of parish life.
We have an OLPH Olympian! Olivia
Smoliga is a graduate of our Religious
Education Program made the Olympic
team for her incredible performance
in the 100 meter back stroke. She
qualified by reaching the 4th fastest

time ever for this competition. We are
all so proud of her and will be glued to
our TV’s for her races. Go Olivia! Go
Team USA!
I had a wonderful time being part of
our recent parish trip to Switzerland,
Austria and Germany. Almost 40 of
us conquered the Alps. We were in a
position to, in a special way, reflect
on the Pope’s Encyclical, Laudato Si”,
in which in addition to protecting the
environment, we need to create space
in our lives to immerse ourselves in
the beauty that God has created. I
loved being able to spend time with
and get to know the folks that were
able to come. We had a great time and
celebrated Mass in some of the most
spectacular churches. Next year’s trip
will take us to Berlin, Krakow, Budapest
and Vienna. More on that later.
We have had so much to celebrate at
the rectory, Saturday we celebrated
Father Flavin’s 80th birthday and
Father Paddy’s 50th anniversary of
priestly ordination. Our Director of
Communications, Natalie Conseur and
her husband Tamron gave birth to a
son, Michael Edward. He and his Mom
are doing great! Congratulations to
Laura Kearney’s wonderful daughter,
Colleen who was engaged last
weekend.
On Sunday at the 11:00 mass I have the
privilege of commissioning our Parish
Pastoral Council. We are so blessed
by the leadership and commitment of
our Parish Pastoral Council. I rely so
much on their wisdom and insight. Bill
McCabe will be the president for the
coming year. The other members are;

Hoshaw, Dave Ludden, Shannon

Her Concerns
Thank you for your great support of the Needy
Family Fund, which responds to the needs of
people in our Parish and Community. It has
been a difficult year, with more people cut to
part time with no benefits. People struggle
every day because the State has cut funding.
Senior citizens are going without their
medication because they cannot afford it.
Mothers do not have enough formula, diapers,
or food to feed their children. The school
lunches are over. Day Care has been cut from
the State budget for single mothers who have
no place to take their children. They are using
rent money to provide a safe place for their
children when they work and therfore they
become homeless. Twenty-five percent of
children under the age of six are malnourished
and 1.6 percent of children are homeless in
our country. We need to help provide the basic
necessities for our community. Please help
with a gift card so a child does not go hungry.

at Marquard, July 17

ND!
Help feed the homeless at Marquard Center on Sunday,
July 17. We welcome donations of fresh fruit, cookies
and candy, which can be delivered to the convent porch
on July 16.
Volunteers are needed on Marquard Service Sundays
to prepare the meal at OLPH after 9:30 a.m. Mass and to
serve the meal at Marquard Center, leaving at 3:30 p.m.
and returning home at 7:30 p.m..
We feed the homeless at Marquard Center an average of
six Sundays per year. Would you consider shopping for
some or all of these meals the day before we go down to
serve? You will be provided a list and recommendations
for where to shop. You can choose to donate the food or
we can work to secure the funding. As noted above, our
next visit will take place on Sunday, July 17th.

to the OLPH Needy Family Fund to Lou Marohn, 2132 Fir

Sharing Ministry Meeting – Tuesday 7/19
We will be feeding the homeless who visit the
Catholic Charities soup kitchen in Des Plaines on
Thursday, September 8th.
The Sharing Ministry will hold its monthly
meeting on Tuesday, 7:00 p.m. in the
Dussman Room. We welcome new
members and new ideas. Join us!!

for this meal. It takes both donors and volunteers to
make these visits happen.

The following statement by Archbishop Blase J. Cupich was issued on July 8, 2016.
An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.
Again we begin our day shocked by news of lives lost overnight —
this time those of five police officers working to ensure the people
of Dallas could assemble in a peaceful anti-violence protest.
This latest tragedy comes directly after deaths in Louisiana and
Minnesota. Every corner of our land is in the grip of terror fueled
by anger, hatred and mental illness and made possible by plentiful,
powerful weapons. Anyone at any time can become a victim.
It is time to break the cycle of violence and retaliation, of fear and
powerlessness that puts more guns in our homes and on our streets.
Our hearts and minds need to change so our country can change.
As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, "Returning violence for violence
multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already d
evoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can
do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
Let us assemble in love to embrace the mourning and lost among us.
Let us assemble in brotherhood to learn what unites us and put aside
what divides us.
Let us assemble in strength and keep assembling until our leaders have
the courage to take the actions that will make these tragedies less likely.
