Feels like coming home
First Homecoming - Family Weekend a memorable occasion
Always a big event on campus,
2014's milestone 35th Homecoming
celebration was the biggest in history,
as for the first time, Homecoming was
combined with Family Weekend.
The spirit spread throughout the
week, as residents and staff across
campus came to work dressed to fit a
different theme each day, varying
from Celebrity Day to Salad Dressing
Day, where one dresses to represent
their favorite dressing.
Friday, October 17, was a day full
of entertainment, with a pep rally,
followed by a Baddour Custom
Packaging Open House and our
annual Char Frost Memorial Garden
Party. But the Garden Party was only
the beginning of the party, as crowds
made their way toward the Baddour
"grove" for a time of tailgating, complete with music and food.
Friday night the Crusaders, The
Baddour Center's resident flag
football team, took the field to
raucous applause to take on the
Wimpy Warriors, a team composed
of staff members and friends of The
Center. In the end, the Crusaders
dealt the Warriors another crushing
defeat, keeping their Homecoming
undefeated streak intact.

Message from the
Executive Director
Dear Friends,
Happy New Year!
We hope your 2015 is
off to a wonderful start.
We quietly wrapped up
our 35th anniversary
year and entered another, and we anxiously await the warmer days ahead.
Warmer days equal more folks out
and about, walking around, gathering at
the Chapel steps, and enjoying campus.
I love to see residents riding their bikes,
fishing, hitting range balls, and visiting.
Warmer days are also a signal of
growth. We will be receiving soon the
multitude of plants that residents will
grow and nurture to maturity and sell
during the spring season. So, make
plans now to visit us and the Garden
Center once you are ready to head for
the flower beds and garden.
Speaking of growth, we are eager to
begin, among other things, a couple of
new projects this year. First, we are hosting later this month a new fund- and
friend-raiser, Dancing for Our Stars.
You can read more about this event elsewhere in the newsletter. We hope you
will make plans to join us.
Also, we will be hosting in June and
July our first-ever “YOUR Summer
Program” (Your Opportunity for a
Unique Respite) for persons between 16
and 35 years of age who are not currently Baddour residents. We hope that
through this new offering persons will
experience first-hand what life at
Baddour is like.
Participants will become week-long
members of the Baddour community
and engage in activities across all program areas. You can help us by referring someone to the program. More
information is available via a link on our
website. You may also encourage persons to contact us directly.
Before signing off, I want to say
thank you. Thank you, Baddour residents. Thank you, families. Thank you,
business partners. Thank you, donors.
Thank you, employees. Without you,
whether you have been a part of our
Baddour Center family for 35 years or
35 days, this ministry of service would
not be possible.
Sincerely,
Parke Pepper

Residents complete Micro course
Spotlight
Goals reached - Charlotte, Gene, Raymond, John, Erik, Kathleen, Trey, Kyle, Joey, Tommy, Val, Andy and Richard saw their hard work pay off in
November, as they completed Mr. Bud Donahou's class on Microbiology at Northwest Mississippi Community College.
Among the many activities that
residents at The Baddour Center have
to choose from are different courses
offered periodically to them at
Northwest Mississippi Community
College in Senatobia.
These classes are always a popular
draw, and that’s in no small part to
Mr. Bud Donahou.
Donahou has personally invested a
great deal of time into the educational
pursuits of The Baddour Center’s

residents, having taught classes in SelfDefense, Botany, Biology,
Geography/Geology, Environmental
Science, Microbiology, Plant Science,
Cooking, Math and GED prep classes.
Donahou handles a full load of
courses at Northwest during the week,
but admits that there’s something
special about teaching the residents.
“These classes have been the most
challenging and yet, the most rewarding of my career,” Donahou said. “I
absolutely love the Baddour Center
residents and hope to continue to have
the opportunity to teach them.”
Residents are equally as fond of
Donahou’s classes.
“He’s real. He smiles at people
and is nice to residents and everyone
he comes across. He’s smart as a
whip,” Joey B. said.
“He’s a great explainer. He won’t
move on until everyone in the classroom understands,” Kathleen H said.

Homecoming-Family Weekend
Continued from p.1
The football game wasn't the only
place where one could find action that
evening, as we welcomed Northwest
Mississippi Community College's pep
band and steel drum band, which
provided entertainment, both before
the game and at halftime. Also at halftime, Samantha G. was crowned 2014
Homecoming Queen.
Saturday was a big day in its own
right. On Saturday morning, resident
families gathered in the auditorium for
an update on each division, as well as a
presentation on life planning for families of persons with special needs from
TJ Kroehle. That afternoon, resident
talents were on display at a talent show.
On Saturday evening, residents, staff
and family alike dressed to the nines
and danced the night away at the annual Homecoming Dance.
The weekend’s festivities wrapped
up on Sunday morning with a touching
worship service at the on-campus
chapel.
Homecoming/Family Weekend
was a tremendous success and The

Christmas season at The Center
The Holiday season is always a
busy time at The Baddour Center
and never ceases to be filled with
fun and surprises.
This year, several residents
celebrated the season by riding on
a float in the Senatobia Christmas
parade.
The Christmas season was also
filled with many opportunities to
both give and to receive.
Residents filled 150 boxes with
toys, candy and necessities such as
toothbrushes to send to needy
children around the world so that
they’d receive a gift for Christmas.
They also hosted a clothing
drive to benefit Memphis Union
Mission.
Residents also received some
Christmas surprises, as children
from Getwell Road United
Methodist Church made Christmas
wreaths during Sunday School
class to give residents for
Christmas.
Another surprise came when
representatives of Phi Theta Kappa
at Northwest Mississippi
Community College visited
campus with Christmas cards for
every resident and went door to
door delivering the cards and
visiting.
The Center also held a
candle-lit Advent service complete
with performance by The Miracles,

Celebrating Service
Each year, The Baddour Center honors its employees who have reached milestones in their employment at The Center.
In 2014, we had the opportunity to recognize 25 employees with a staggering 355 combined years of service to the
residents of The Baddour Center. We’re very thankful for their commitment and dedication to The Baddour Center.

New dance event to raise awareness for Baddour
Media stars, a mayor and other prominent community leaders are coming together for The Baddour
Center’s first-ever Dancing For Our Stars fundraiser
on Thursday, February 26, 2015. Modeled after the
popular television show, Dancing With the Stars, the
event pairs seasoned dancers with community leader
“celebrities” for a competition to benefit The Baddour
Center, a residential community for adults with intellectual disabilities. Dinner and drinks will be at 6 p.m.
with the program beginning at 7 p.m. at First Choice
Catering, 5905 Scott Blvd. in Horn Lake, Miss. First
Choice Catering is also the presenting sponsor.
“This type of event has been successful in other
cities,” said Ruth Ann Hale, director of development
and public relations at The Baddour Center. “We
want everyone to vote for their favorites.”
Voting is open now at www.dancingforourstars.com
for $1 per vote, and voting will also take place at the
event. Sponsorship opportunities are also available.
Hale said she hopes this will become an annual
event.
Professional dancers from the area are being paired
with celebrity dancers. The dance duos will be:
(1)
Joe Birch of WMC-TV with Paula Wyatt
(2)
Kendall Kirkham of WMC-TV with Jim
Frommel
(3)
Hernando, Miss. Mayor Chip Johnson with
Cat Woods
(4)
