Dear Friends,
On behalf of the patients and their families who benefit from the care provided by St. John Providence Health
System, thank you for your generous support. Because you share our vision to provide the highest quality
patient care experience, every day, everywhere, for everyone, we are truly making a difference. Because you
share our vision, we are able to provide excellent care for body, mind and spirit.
As you read through this annual report, you will come to understand the immense kindness of our community.
From the smallest heartfelt gift, to the large gift supporting the latest technology, to attendance at a fundraising
event, your generosity continues to inspire us. We are grateful for the continuing loyalty of longtime friends
and thankful for the new supporters we have gained over the past year…you all make an impact.
Susan E. Burns
In 2010, we were delighted to receive another exceptional gift from Gretchen Valade for important
technology for our Heart and Vascular Center of Excellence; and the Cracchiolo family provided the lead gift
for a new inpatient rehabilitation center where patients receive the best possible care using the most advanced
rehabilitation equipment available. In addition, Art Van Elslander’s continued support made the addition of
an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit for the Neuroscience Center of Excellence a reality, and contributions from many
other donors helped build a new Electrophysiology Lab. Scores of other needs in our hospitals, programs
and services were fulfilled through your gifts. Our Legacy Society has also grown, as community members
designate planned gifts for the future support of St. John Providence Health System.
Our fundraising efforts continue to focus on our many Centers of Excellence and on additional priority needs
to offer the most advanced treatment, cutting-edge technology and expert care available. With your continued
support and the renewed spirit of collaboration among our hospitals, leadership and boards, we are better
positioned to provide an enhanced continuum of care for our patients. We are excited about the future and
fortunate to have so many of you beside us as we work to make a greater impact on the health of our
community.

HEART AND VASCULAR CARE
Making an impact
Patient with severe heart disease seeks second opinion that saves his life
One blocked heart artery and two partially blocked arteries were a
cause of grave concern for Frank Garcia, 57, of Detroit. A doctor at
a large health institution had told him, “There’s nothing we can do;
you’re going to have a massive heart attack.”
While contemplating whether to buy more life insurance to protect
his family, he happened to catch a TV commercial from St. John
Providence Health System about a new treatment, the Diamondback
360®, that works like a “roto-rooter” to clear blocked arteries.
Months prior to his office visit, Frank had to leave his job because
he couldn’t lift boxes. Frank knew that surgery wouldn’t allow him
to return to his job, but he thought it could lead to a longer, better
quality of life. He needs the energy and strength to help raise his
five-year-old daughter, Taylor, and be able to spend time with his
four grown children and six grandchildren.
With a glimmer of hope, he broke through his sense of pending doom
and called the number on the TV screen. Two weeks later, he had an
appointment with the doctor in the commercial: Thomas Davis, MD,
Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at St. John Hospital
and Medical Center (SJH&MC) and a partner at Eastlake Cardiovascular
Associates in St. Clair Shores.
On Aug. 31 and Sept. 10, 2010, Frank underwent a two-stage
cardiac catheterization. Dr. Davis opened his blocked arteries through
catheterization and, in the second operation, inserted a drug-eluding
stent – a tiny mesh cylinder – into another artery. The anti-clotting
medication in the stent prevents plaque formation in the artery.
Both procedures required only an overnight hospital stay.
“Is there anything you can do for me?” Frank asked.
Frank’s previous symptoms of shortness of breath, fatigue and lack
of strength are now a thing of the past. His blood flow has improved
dramatically following the procedures, and he has undertaken a
rigorous cardiac rehabilitation program. He also is learning how to
cook healthy meals to control his diabetes, which often occurs with
heart disease.
Dr. Davis’ response gave Frank renewed hope. “He (Frank) thought he
was going to die from this problem. He was told there was nothing
that could be done aside from medication.” Dr. Davis has extensive
experience with difficult cases and also conducts research using the
latest technology. Having performed at least 10,000 cases – his
“tipping point” – Dr. Davis told Frank that he was willing to try
to restore blood flow in his arteries.
Pictured above left to right:

“This second opinion was fantastic,” Frank said. “Before that, I was
getting into a panic mode. There was a lot of praying going on.”

Frank has high praise for the treatment he received from Dr. Davis.
He said, “The way he approached my treatment was a positive
experience. He cared about me as a patient. The procedures that
he performed saved my life.”
In addition to Dr. Davis’ role in his amazing recovery, Frank also
credits the care and encouragement that he received from Alan
Cholewiak and Theresa Dombrow, who work in Cardiac Rehabilitation
at SJH&MC. “They guided me in the right direction for a longer and
healthier life,” he said.
According to Dr. Davis, “The hybrid OR offers the best of angioplasty
and surgery combined. This technology is not available at other area
hospitals. We can do a lot for patients with complicated conditions
now that we have more options.”
The hybrid OR allows heart bypass and cardiac catheterizations to
be performed during the same session. The new da Vinci® Si robot
enables surgeons to make a three-inch incision below the rib
(traditional surgery requires a 10-inch long opening along the chest).
This robot makes it easier for the surgeon to perform a coronary
artery bypass using the left internal mammary artery, a procedure
considered to be the “gold standard” of care. Patients don’t have

The new robotic system and The Gretchen C. Valade Cardiovascular
Hybrid Operating Room are life-saving additions to the Heart and
Vascular Center of Excellence at SJH&MC and demonstrate how
donor gifts make a difference.
Gretchen Valade’s gift of a robotic surgery unit elevates level of care
The physicians and staff of St. John Hospital and Medical
Center (SJH&MC) along with grateful patients appreciate
the generous gifts of longtime supporter Gretchen Valade,
of Grosse Pointe Farms.
In June 2010, Mrs. Valade made a $2 million donation to fund
the purchase of a da Vinci® Si robotic surgical system. The
gift will be used for heart patients, cancer patients and
others who can benefit from minimally invasive surgery.
The new system will be based in The Gretchen C. Valade
Cardiovascular Hybrid Operating Room, which opened this
spring at SJH&MC. The hybrid OR is the anchor of the
Minimally Invasive Structural Heart Program, which was
launched with a $3 million gift made by Mrs. Valade in 2009.
That gift came after she learned how such an OR would
vastly improve heart care, during a presentation made by
Thomas LaLonde, MD, Chief of Cardiology at SJH&MC.
These advances allow physicians to treat multiple conditions,
e.g., heart valve repair and bypass procedures, in one
operation. The new technology also improves patient care,
with enhanced safety during surgery, a shorter hospital stay
and quicker recovery. In addition, operating in a hybrid OR
means that patients don’t need to move to a traditional
operating room if a minimally invasive procedure leads to
more extensive surgery.
As chairman of Carhartt, Inc., CEO of Mack Avenue Records,
chairman of the board for the Detroit Jazz Festival, and
owner of the Dirty Dog Jazz Café and Morning Glory Coffee
Shop, Mrs. Valade has given back to the community in
numerous ways that improve the lives of many.
A reception held Nov. 2, 2010,
at St. John Hospital recognized
Mrs. Valade’s latest gift and
celebrated this major advance
in health care for St. John
Providence Health System’s
Heart and Vascular Center
of Excellence.

in 2010.
“We are so grateful for
Mrs. Valade’s generosity.
Her gift enables us to move forward with improved technology that will make a difference to our patients in the
short-term and long run.”
“This fantastic gift for the new technology, along with our
superb physicians, will heighten our leading-edge cardiac
care services, allowing us to better serve our community,”
said Patricia Maryland, Dr.PH, President and CEO, St. John
Providence Health System.
The da Vinci unit, with third-generation robotic technology,
will be used by many disciplines: heart surgeons as well
as specialists in urology, gynecology, and otolaryngology
(ENT - ear, nose and throat).

HEART AND VASCULAR CARE
Providence’s new Electrophysiology Lab enhances cardiac care
The new Electrophysiology Laboratory (EP Lab), which opened this
spring at Providence Hospital in Southfield, adds a multi-specialty
room to the Providence Heart Institute with advanced equipment
for electrophysiology and other invasive cardiology procedures.
The EP Lab is one of five invasive cardiology rooms located on
the first floor of the Heart Institute. A portion of the $2 million cost
to build and furnish the lab came from contributions to Providence
Health Foundation’s general fund. Construction on the project began
in 2010.
“The new EP Lab will allow us to develop a comprehensive structural
heart disease program through new tools and technology for
complex electrophysiology testing and treatment,” said Shukri David,
MD, Chief of Cardiology at Providence and Providence Park Hospitals.
Electrophysiology is a specialized procedure that locates the source
of an irregular heartbeat and restores it to a healthier state through
radiofrequency ablation or other treatments.
Atrial fibrillation is a prevalent form of arrhythmia (irregular
heartbeat) that affects a large segment of patients with heart
disease. It occurs when the upper chamber of the heart fails to
pump in a normal pattern.
“The lab will expand our ability to conduct complex atrial
fibrillation ablation procedures,” said Jack Cain, Administrative
Director of Operations for Invasive Cardiology at Providence
and Providence Park Hospitals.
The new EP Lab features a high-tech digital imaging system and
a 3-D magnetic navigation system known as CARTO-3. It operates
like a GPS system to locate electrical problems within the heart,
providing greater accuracy and the ability to perform quicker
procedures. Other high-tech equipment includes two advanced
computer systems: one for EP procedures and a hemodynamic
unit for cardiac catheterizations.
During periods of high patient volume, physicians can use the new
EP Lab to implant pacemakers and defibrillators or perform cardiac
catheterizations and coronary interventions. These procedures can
help prevent heart attacks, sudden cardiac arrest and progression
of heart disease.
Providence Hospital is nationally recognized as a Top 100 Hospital
for Heart Care by Thomson Reuters, a health care information
company. It is the only hospital in southeast Michigan to be
awarded this distinction 10 years in a row.

The community of St. John River District Hospital (SJRDH) came
together Dec. 8, 2010, to celebrate the fundraising effort for the
hospital’s 64-slice CT scanner. During the event, a donor wall was
unveiled with names of more than 400 supporters who raised
more than $1.2 million for the unit.

Generous supporters of River District’s CT scanner honored
“We are grateful to our community and all the donors who have
contributed significant funds for this advanced technology,” said
SJRDH President Frank Poma. “The unit enables us to deliver
a higher level of care to patients.”
The lead gift was made by the estate of Vera Fuller Hanson, an area
resident who wished to support the hospital.
Among the major donors to the campaign were Emergency Medicine
Specialists, PC, who made the lead gift among physicians. Several
other individual physicians and physician groups followed suit and
supported the campaign.

“We have a commitment to the hospital and the patients who
seek emergency care there; we feel it is our obligation to give back.
As partners in caring for the members of the community, we want
to offer support,” said James Fox, MD, Vice President of Emergency
Medicine Specialists. About six of the group’s 80-plus emergency
physicians provide care at River District.
Donor funds are vital for the purchase of technology that improves
patient care through earlier detection, faster results, better imaging
and the need for less invasive procedures. The 64-slice CT scanner
has all of those benefits and more.
The unit is ideally suited for imaging the heart because it shows
slices of the entire heart and artery walls, including early plaque
formation. Being able to “freeze” the action of a beating heart
through multiple images has led to improved diagnosis of
cardiovascular disease – the leading cause of death in the United
States. The unit is also an important tool in detecting blockages
in the carotid (neck) artery, which can lead to a stroke.
In addition, radiologists have discovered cancer, blockages and
other conditions secondary to the primary test. Many health
problems have been detected before they became life threatening.
For fractures, the unit provides orthopedic surgeons with detailed
imaging to guide surgery precisely. The scanner also allows for
faster testing of patients who come to the Emergency Center.

CANCER CARE
Leading the way
Patient is relieved to be cancer-free after robotic surgery
At age 84, Arthur (Art) Couvreur has lived through many changes and
challenges, including attending college and serving in World War II.
He has been married to Mary for 61 years and the couple raised seven
children. To support their large family, Art worked in the building trades
and later sold commercial real estate.
Over the years, Art’s challenges included his share of health problems.
For about 20 years, he has had neuropathy in his legs and uses a cane
to walk. In August 2010, Art noticed blood in his urine and became
alarmed. After visiting his internist for an evaluation, he was referred
to his St. John Hospital and Medical Center urologist, Edward Schervish,
MD, who is also with the Michigan Institute of Urology.
Upon learning he had an aggressive type of bladder cancer along with
kidney cancer, Art recalled, “I was shocked.” Dr. Schervish recommended
a cystoprostatectomy (bladder and prostate removal) and a nephroureterectomy (removal of a kidney and the ureter) to prevent the cancer
from spreading.
Art was determined to beat the disease. Fearful yet hopeful, he put
complete trust in Dr. Schervish to eradicate the cancer. “He told me,
‘We don’t have a lot of options. We need to treat the bladder cancer
first.’” Stage 1 bladder cancer can strike hard and progress fast.
The discovery of Art’s tumor was actually good timing. In fall 2010,
longtime St. John Hospital and Medical Center supporter Gretchen
Valade donated $2 million to purchase a new da Vinci® Si robotic
surgical system for the most advanced minimally invasive cardiovascular,
urologic and gynecologic procedures. Dr. Schervish realized that her

generous gift would provide the best surgical option for Art. (See related
article on page 3 about Mrs. Valade’s gift.)
The da Vinci Si system has a dual-control platform that allows the chief
surgeon to operate the main set of controls for viewing the site – through
a high-powered scope – and manipulating the robotic arms and
instruments to perform the surgery. The second console enables a surgeon
in training to observe the procedure and assist with cutting and suturing.
“The dual console cuts the learning curve for surgeons being trained on
the system,” Dr. Schervish said. “This is also safer for patients.”
The new system has enhanced magnification and a larger viewing area,
enabling a surgeon to extract tumors with greater precision while
minimizing muscle and nerve damage. With a 360-degree rotation range,
the surgeon can access hard-to-reach areas.
Dr. Schervish performed Art’s surgery on Dec. 14, 2010. Art credits his
lack of pain to the small incisions made by the surgeon using robotic
techniques. Dr. Schervish was able to remove all the cancer, so there was
no need for chemotherapy or radiation therapy following surgery –
another relief for Art and his family.
“Art was a high-risk patient due to his age and the type of surgery he
was having. If not treated quickly, the cancer would have spread,”
Dr. Schervish said. “There’s no question that blood loss is less with
robotic surgery and there is a quicker recovery.”
“I’m just amazed by it,” Art said, of the many benefits afforded by the
new unit.
Art is now doing well, gaining back some of the weight he lost after
his surgery. Removal of his bladder required Art to have a urostomy, a
surgical procedure which creates an opening on the lower abdomen to
allow urine to be collected in an ostomy bag. While this is an inconvenience, Art considers it a fair trade-off. After all, the successful surgery
has bought him more time with his wife, children, 11 grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren.
CANCER CARE
Mountain climbing event raises money for breast cancer care
This year’s climb to the summit of Ben Lomond (elevation 9,712
ft.) of the Wasatch Mountain, near Ogden, Utah, continues a
growing tradition to support the St. John Providence Health System
(SJPHS) Breast Care Program. Since 2007, the mountain climbing
event has escalated from a personal venture to over 30 climbers
participating—each pledging to raise at least $1,000 for breast
cancer care.
Funds from the fifth annual “Beat Breast Cancer” climb on June 25
will be used for early detection and financial assistance for high-risk
patients who are too young to qualify for other assistance.
Climbing a mountain is akin to conquering breast cancer – the
mental and physical challenges can take every ounce of energy
without the guarantee of a positive outcome. Yet the risks involved
in this adventurous sport pale in comparison to the setbacks
and uncertainty inherent with a diagnosis of breast cancer. The
exhilaration that a mountain climber feels when reaching the
summit is on par with that of a breast cancer survivor whose health
is restored.
For Francesco Lucarelli, the climb to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro
in 2007 was a spiritual bonding experience – with the wind
whispering to him as though it was his mother, Maria, who died
of breast cancer in 2001.
Finally feeling at peace with her death, Francesco opened up the
experience to more people by holding the mountain climbs in the
United States. The funds initially were applied to the Van Elslander
Cancer Center at St. John Hospital. As the climbing event grew in
stature and total funds raised (over $90,000 has been raised since
2007), the program was expanded to support breast cancer services
throughout SJPHS.
Those on the “Challenge team” each know an individual who has
survived the disease or died from it. Keeping their images in mind,
hikers pursue this rigorous challenge to make a difference for those
with breast cancer.
Lorraine Owczarek, SJPHS Foundations Events Consultant, has
gone on several climbing expeditions, including two with her adult
daughter, Amy. She recalled last year’s Mt. Washington climb, “The
night before the hike, we all gathered to introduce ourselves and
talk about why we were hiking. Halfway through the introductions,
there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. Everyone knew someone with
breast cancer. We all became one in our goal to hike to the summit
and raise funds for the breast cancer program.”
Scott Wojtowicz, 23, is climbing in honor of his mother, Karen
Wojtowicz, a breast cancer survivor of 11 years. Both are employed

at St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital; she’s in Administration, he
works in Security. “My mother was diagnosed when I was 11 years
old,” Scott said. “I am climbing because it’s really important to me
to help save lives. If just one life can be saved by the money raised
on the hike, then it’s worth it.”
Joann Spence, 46, of Washington Township, is also climbing in
honor of her mother, Stefanie, who has invasive ductal carcinoma.
A nurse anesthetist at Providence Hospital, Joann says the event
is a symbolic way of “being right there alongside my mother as
she goes through treatment.”
The mountain climb has also drawn a physician to participate.
Narendra Gohel, MD, Vice Chief of Surgery and Chief of General
Surgery at St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital, climbed in 2010
with his son, Nishant, now 16.
“I’ve been treating breast cancer patients for 25 years,” Dr. Gohel
said. “In that time, there have been encouraging new developments.”
Certain diagnostic procedures that used to be done in the OR
can now be done in the office, such as doing a biopsy through
a small opening. Fundraising is an important part of finding less
invasive approaches.
Of the hikers, Francesco says, “The whole is always greater than
the sum of its parts, so I’m excited to see how successful our team
can be in raising money this year.”

NEUROSCIENCE CARE
Working hard for better health
“We got our lives back”… stroke patient reclaims health through rehabilitation
Don Carpenter, of New Baltimore, had a stroke at age 62 that severely
limited his ability to function. His speech was slurred. He couldn’t walk.
And, his left hand was curled tight; he couldn’t move his fingers, hold
a cup or reach for an object.
The prognosis that he received at the hospital where he originally sought
treatment sent chills down his spine. The rehabilitation staff painted a
picture of disability and hopelessness. When Debbie Carpenter mentioned
that she and her husband had been looking forward to going to Mexico,
the therapist replied,” The best that he will probably do is be able to
transfer from his wheelchair to the toilet.”
The Carpenters desired a better prognosis, wanting to return to “life as
we knew it.” They found the skilled staff they expected and the hope
they desired at St. John North Shores Hospital. (The North Shores staff
now works at the Cracchiolo Inpatient Rehabilitation Center at St. John
Hospital, continuing to provide exceptional care.)
Rehabilitation Manager Gail Regener recalls the Carpenters with
fondness. “When Debbie called me at home after her husband had a
stroke, we talked for almost two hours. She was struggling to find just
an ounce of hope.”
Gail is happy to report that the couple found just what they were
looking for. “Our team offered hope where there was despair,” she said.
“I promised Debbie that we would do everything in our power to give
Don the best therapy he could get in a caring environment.”
Pictured above left to right:

His regimen consisted of physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational
therapy and more. He went through inpatient therapy and also had
therapists come to his home.
“The therapists were angels. They offered total encouragement,” said
Debbie. “They are the reason that Don is as good as he is today. I would
stay there seven to eight hours a day, and they answered all my questions
and showed me what they were doing so I could help him at home.”
The Carpenters were impressed by the staff’s positive attitude and determined efforts. “Jeff Berger (physical therapist) not only got him walking
again but also had him going up stairs,” Debbie said. “Kim Carter (occupational therapist) told him that he would be able to use his hand again.”
Indeed, he has regained the use of his left hand. He is also able to speak
clearly and walk again. He has resumed bowling, golfing and fishing.
He takes his grandkids on trips up north and spends quality time with
his family. Following his stroke, Don sold the collision shop he had owned
for 40 years and retired.
The only regret that Debbie has about his care is that she didn’t keep a
journal or take video of Don’s progress. “That would have shown him how
far he’s come,” she said.
His recovery has impressed others. The Emergency Medicine doctor who
had treated him for a stroke almost didn’t recognize his patient when he
returned several months later looking more robust but suffering from kidney
stones. The doctor said, “There’s a higher being involved in his recovery.”
Without the right care and the right intervention, Don’s stroke could
have resulted in full disability. Thanks to the staff now relocated at the
Cracchiolo Inpatient Rehabilitation Center, Don has made a strong recovery.
His outcome also demonstrates the power of staff, family and patient
working together toward a shared goal.
What advice do the Carpenters have for others? “Do not give up. Never
say ‘never.’”
St. John Providence Health System has relocated the St. John North
Shores Inpatient Rehabilitation Program to a new state-of-the-art
unit on the third floor of St. John Hospital and Medical Center with
a generous gift from the Cracchiolo family. The 23,000 square-foot
Cracchiolo Inpatient Rehabilitation Center opened Nov. 1, 2010.
The 36-bed unit has spacious private and semi-private rooms and
can accommodate more patients than the former site. It also has
a large gym/treatment room and buffet-style dining area.
Patients receive physical therapy, occupational therapy and
speech-language pathology treatment from a dedicated team of
therapists. Many of the therapists have special training in areas
such as neurorehabilitation, low-vision, amputation/ prosthetic
care and swallow dysfunction.

Gift from Cracchiolo family brings high-tech,
healing-touch rehab to SJH&MC
The Cracchiolo family, longtime supporters of St. John
Hospital and Medical Center (SJH&MC), championed the call
to open a state-of-the-art inpatient physical rehabilitation
center at the hospital.
The desire to support the project stemmed from a personal
experience of the late matriarch Connie Cracchiolo. She
had undergone hip-replacement surgery at St. John
Hospital several years ago and was sent to another hospital
for rehabilitation, which was farther from home. She greatly
missed the continuum of care provided by the physicians and
staff at St. John Hospital and also missed the convenience of
the Moross/Mack location for family and friends who visited
during her stay.
As a board member for the St. John Health Foundation,
Peter T. Cracchiolo learned of an opportunity to address the
concerns of his late mother when he heard a presentation
by Raymond Bauer, MD. He learned that the rehabilitation
services from St. John North Shores Hospital would move to
St. John Hospital, expanding treatment space and equipment
as part of the move.
“My father (Peter J. Cracchiolo Sr.) and I discussed the
possibility of supporting the new rehab center,” Peter T.
said. “He likes to think awhile before making a decision, but
right away he said, ‘I’m interested in this; keep me in the loop
as it progresses.’”
Soon after, the Cracchiolos decided to back the effort to
establish the inpatient rehabilitation center on the third
floor of SJH&MC. At the time their lead gift was announced,
Peter J. Cracchiolo Sr.’s children joined him at the Rehabilitation
Center’s grand opening: (from left) Phyllis DeMars, Bernadette
Lindquist, Peter J. Cracchiolo Sr., Grace Cracchiolo and
Peter T. Cracchiolo. Photo by Karlest Ford
Peter J. said, “To invest in our own community is to contribute
to its future health, and I hope others support this endeavor.”
The Cracchiolos’ generous philanthropy prompted others
to contribute to the new rehabilitation center at St. John
Hospital, providing more accessible care to patients in
Detroit, the Grosse Pointes, St. Clair Shores and surrounding
areas.
Supporting the “Cracchiolo Inpatient Rehabilitation Center”
in memory of Connie Cracchiolo is a testament to the
compassion the Cracchiolos have for their community.
The family’s passion for high quality health care is now
benefitting all who use the center.
Other major gifts from the Peter J. and Constance
M. Cracchiolo Foundation in past years supported the
expansion and renovation of SJH&MC and the Van Elslander
Cancer Center.

The staff works with patients with a wide range of diagnoses
including:
• stroke
• brain injury • amputation
• multiple sclerosis (MS)
• Parkinson’s disease
“The earlier that intensive therapy begins, the better the outcome,”
said Gail Regener, RN-BC, CRRN, Manager of Rehabilitation
Services. One of the therapy patients who appreciates the benefits
of intensive therapy is Sue Scheive, of Grosse Pointe Park, who
works as a lactation specialist at Providence Hospital in Southfield.
After having joint replacement surgery in both knees, she said,
“I’m willing to work hard at therapy even though it’s difficult.
I’m looking forward to a future without knee pain.”
The new unit offers an attractive, spacious and comfortable rehabilitation setting. It features high-tech equipment used by the most
advanced rehabilitation centers across the country. This includes:
• a split-belt treadmill

harness attached to the track, which eliminates the risk of falling
and enables the therapist to work more effectively with patients.
Another gait-training device is the treadmill. “The split-belt treadmill
allows us to train patients (post stroke or brain injury, MS) to take
more normal, symmetrical steps,” said Lead Physical Therapist Jeff
Berger. “By speeding up one side of the treadmill, the patient begins
to develop a new walking pattern that will actually stick.”
Another innovation is “Smart Step,” an insole worn inside a patient’s
shoe that wirelessly communicates with a computer using Bluetooth
technology. The system tracks a variety of walking parameters that
can be used to assess a patient’s progress and provides biofeedback through virtual reality drills and games. The Cybex Trazer is an
additional virtual reality, motion-capture system that helps patients
overcome neurological and balance impairments.
The Cracchiolo Center also has a kitchen setting where patients
practice routine household tasks to aid in their recovery or adjust
to a disability.

With the unit’s advanced equipment, skilled therapy staff and
comfortable patient rooms, the Cracchiolo gift is helping many
patients obtain better health.
Patients with epilepsy or symptoms that mimic the disorder can be
monitored in a new four-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU), which
opened this spring in the Van Elslander Neurosciences Center at
Providence Park Hospital in Novi.
NEUROSCIENCE CARE
Epilepsy Monitoring Unit is newest service at Van Elslander Neurosciences Center
Epilepsy is a neurological condition that causes seizures and can
affect anyone from young children to older adults. Seizure disorders
affect three million people in the United States, impacting all aspects
of a person’s life, including school, employment and the ability to
drive. An individual’s entire life can be controlled by something that
typically lasts less than a few minutes a month.
Patients from their mid-teens through older adults are treated on the
new unit. As services expand, younger pediatric patients will also be
admitted.
The comprehensive epilepsy program is a first for St. John Providence
Health System (SJPHS). It was made possible with funds from the
2009 major gift from Art Van Elslander, a leading businessman and
philanthropist, to support the Neuroscience Center of Excellence.
Physicians now have the opportunity to monitor, record and
thoroughly evaluate a patient’s seizure disorder with the new
technology and specialized staff. The new unit is equipped with
epilepsy monitoring devices that can capture both video and audio
recordings of the patient, along with electrical impulses of the brain.
The digital recording is an advancement that makes it easier for
physicians to pinpoint lesions or other causes of seizures. Other
tests used in evaluation are CT, MRI and PET scans.
Major advances in radiology allow physicians to more clearly identify
patterns of seizures and detect their origin. “We’re on the cutting
edge of the radiology piece,” said Amer Aboukasm, MD, an
epileptologist (neurologist trained in epilepsy) and Medical Director
of the EMU.
Dr. Amer Aboukasm and Manager Judy Ahn-Ewing test the new
displays prior to the opening of the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit in
the Van Elslander Neurosciences Center.
“New drugs being investigated and those currently used in treatment
are definitely superior to older-generation drugs, with fewer side
effects,” said Dr. Aboukasm.
There is an extensive educational component to the epilepsy program
for patients and their families. “The multi-disciplinary staff of an
epileptologist, neuropsychologist, neurosurgeon, nurse practitioner,
epilepsy technician and social worker are all involved in this aspect of
care,” said Judy Ahn-Ewing, Manager of Neurodiagnostics for SJPHS
and Manager of the EMU.
The new Epilepsy Monitoring Unit features:
•State-of-the-art video recording and monitoring equipment designed for an epilepsy unit
Younger patients often have seizures due to genetic conditions, while
the cause in older adults is more likely due to a head injury, brain
tumor or stroke.
•Nationally recognized specialists, including a neurosciences medical director on staff, who provide comprehensive care
The average stay is two to three nights to several weeks. The length
of assessment depends on the severity of seizures and locating their
origin.
•Technicians specially trained for the new, sophisticated equipment
Treatment may be medication or surgery. Options are discussed with
the appropriate specialist following diagnosis.
•A multi-disciplinary team approach to identify patients
who can benefit from surgery or medication
•The ability to assess and implement a medication regimen while monitoring patients
•Comprehensive education programs for staff, patients
and families

LIVING OUR MISSION
School-based health centers reach out to students, families and communities
When children are healthy, they learn better. But
many children in Detroit and their families have
limited access to health care services. That’s why
St. John Providence Health System (SJPHS), through
its Community Health program, offers free health
care services at 10 school-based health centers in
the metro Detroit area.
SJPHS associates who provide care at the schoolbased health centers are committed to uplifting
and empowering young people to live healthy
lifestyles and make healthy decisions. They are
valuable resources for children and their families,
offering programs that focus on nurturing the body,
mind and spirit through traditional physical care as
well as mental, emotional and spiritual support.
The school-based health center at Marcus Garvey
Academy (formerly Butzel School) is just one
example of how SJPHS provides holistic, spiritually
centered care. Nurse Practitioner Jonnie Hamilton
has been providing care to one family since 2000.
Lunita W., a mother of five children ages 7 to 14, is grateful for
the services her family receives. “I am so appreciative that the
nurse practitioner will give me an appointment for all of my
children on the same day. If I had to get a babysitter for several
days for each child’s physical exam and immunizations, I could
never afford it.”
The nurse practitioner also sees a young student who is obese and
was recently diagnosed with diabetes. “We have him on a diet and
exercise program, and he lost seven pounds in one week,” Jonnie
said. “He is receiving diabetic education, and his parent wrote me
a note thanking me for diagnosing him, since his primary physicians
had not had him tested. Since he has a family history of diabetes,
early detection was very important.”
Although SJPHS receives state grant funding for some of the
school-based programs, in each of the cases mentioned, the extra
effort and caring of the SJPHS school-based health center team
is what made the solution possible. This day-to-day effort, which
is also supported by the generosity of donors, is truly making an
impact on the lives of many students and families throughout
the Detroit area.

LIVING OUR MISSION
Walk With ME helps family endure difficult times
What do parents do when their child has a life-threatening illness
and they need treatment assistance but no longer qualify for home
care and don’t qualify for hospice care? They call the Walk With ME
Pediatric Palliative Care Program, offered through St. John Providence
Hospice to provide comfort care to children with life-limiting illnesses.
The Ludwig family had made many trips to doctors’ offices and
emergency rooms trying to find out what was wrong with their son,
Luke, then age 5, who was experiencing a range of symptoms that
included vomiting, fevers, loss of coordination and hearing, and
double vision. Diagnoses from viral infections and Lyme disease
to GERD were given. When an MRI was finally ordered, the family
was told the bad news. “My perfect little angel had a brain tumor,”
exclaimed Luke’s mom, Kathy Ludwig. “I don’t think there are words
that describe how I felt.”
In August 2007, the day after the tumor was found, Luke had
surgery. “Eight hours of agony went by, praying that our little boy
would be OK,” Kathy recalled. “We went home 12 days later. We
lived in darkness for six weeks because the light hurt Luke’s eyes.
Then we began the rehab process. My whole life revolved around
him while the rest of life crumbled around me.”
When the tumor grew again, Luke was back in surgery in December
2007. Parents Kathy and Dan spent Christmas at the hospital and
the older children, Brandon and Courtney, went to relatives for
the holidays. It was a horrible, dark time for the family with no
end in sight. In February 2008, Luke had a medi-port put in for
chemotherapy. “This whole nightmare just kept getting worse,”
said Kathy. “What we didn’t expect was an angel.”
The angel was Kris Baguzis, the home care nurse who began helping
with Luke’s care after the Ludwig family contacted the Walk With
ME program. “I don’t know how we would ever have survived it all
without her. She was kind, caring, compassionate, knowledgeable
and the brightest light I had seen in a year,” Kathy said.
Kris was always available even when Kathy called her at 3 a.m.
because Luke couldn’t stop vomiting or when the family was at a
4H horse show and Luke was having a dystonic reaction to one of
his medications. Kris traveled all over St. Clair County to meet with
the family for blood draws, to answer questions and explain things
they didn’t understand. “To say she was a comfort and reassurance
doesn’t even begin to describe how we felt,” Kathy said.
Luke Ludwig is

staff.
The family also received the help of another Walk With ME angel,
Linda Kammer-Nelson. She went to the Ludwig’s home in the
country – often meeting with Kathy in the driveway and plodding
through the mud to the house to spend a few hours listening to
Kathy vent and cry. “Filling out paperwork, finding doctors, doing
crafts with Luke, her help was limitless. No matter how bad things
were, I always felt better by the time she left,” Kathy said. “How
did we get so lucky? I don’t know how we would have gotten
through this without them to Walk With ME.”
Luke is now 8 years old, and his tumor is in remission. He has some
learning difficulties, extremity weakness and anxiety associated
with his condition and treatments. He continues with follow-up
care in oncology, neurology and therapy. While he doesn’t currently
need the care of Walk With ME, the staff still keeps in touch with
the Ludwigs.
For the past several years, the St. John Providence Health System
Hospice Oktoberfest event has raised funds to support the Walk
With ME Pediatric Palliative Care Program to assist families like
the Ludwigs who need special care for their loved ones.

My whole life revolved around him while the
rest of life crumbled around me.”

Career nurse gives planned gift to Providence in honor of her alma mater
By nature and career choice, Sandra (Sandee) Rellinger is a caring
individual. As a career nurse, she has attended to the needs of
patients in hospitals, senior day care centers and in occupational
health.
The values, morals and principles that she lives by – including faith,
hard work, compassion, dependability and trustworthiness – have
been instilled by her parents, who immigrated from Czechoslovakia,
and through her education. Sandee (nee: Syrovy) earned her
nursing diploma from Providence Nursing School, class of 1966.
She was among other graduates who applied what they learned
in a variety of nursing settings. She spent 27 years of her career
at General Motors.
Her education helped shape her outlook on life as well as her career.
“The whole program was wonderful; I was especially interested in
the class on morality in nursing. The instructors were well qualified.
I was happy to be in a Catholic setting so I could attend Mass.
They taught us how to be detail oriented, which helped me
personally and professionally.”
She still gets together with many of her classmates. This year, they
are planning a 45-year anniversary celebration.
Based on her solid education and desire to give back, Sandee named
Providence Health Foundation as a beneficiary of a life insurance
policy to establish an endowment for continuing education of nurses
employed by Providence and Providence Park Hospitals. The Sandra
Marie Rellinger Nursing Education Endowment will help cover
tuition and conference registration costs.
Sandee toured the new Providence Park Hospital in Novi in October
2010 and attended a session on planned giving. “I was thrilled to
be invited and have the chance to tour the beautiful hospital and
listen to the seminar,” she said.

“I hope that my gift inspires others in my class and also sets an
example for others who want to give back,” noted the Rochester
Hills resident.
“I like to give back however I can. If I can’t give monetarily, I give
my time,” she said. Her philosophy was put into action when she
was between jobs in the last few years. Although she had started
her own personal assistance business to help seniors and others,
she continued to volunteer. She is now employed as a nurse at
a construction site and jokingly admits to being the on-site
“trailer nurse.”
14
Her life is full, as she still maintains her service business, works
full-time, volunteers and attends Mass daily. “I wanted to retire at
65 but now it looks like I’ll be working ad infinitum,” she said.
With Sandee’s positive outlook and boundless energy, working longer
fits her lifestyle. She is the proud mother of two adult children, who
live in Atlanta, and has two grandchildren. In her spare time, she
enjoys ballroom dancing, biking, gardening and calligraphy and
maintains three homes.
BUILDING OUR ENDOWMENT
Medication fund assists patients in need
A special fund has enabled more than 750 patients of St. John
Macomb-Oakland Hospital’s (SJMOH) Partial Hospital Psychiatric
Program to obtain medication they otherwise couldn’t afford yet
often can’t live without.
The Louis A. Kassab Memorial Fund was established by Lou’s
family to commemorate his compassion and generosity for
individuals deprived of a good quality of life due to mental illness.
The fund has been assisting patients at SJMOH’s Psychiatric
Outpatient Unit since 2000.
Psychiatrist Anthony Petrilli, MD, Director of the SJMOH program,
treated Lou often during the 20 years prior to his death in 1998
at age 41. He recalls, “Lou was a smart patient who liked to
challenge me in a dogmatic manner yet, conversely, was genuinely
concerned about the cost of medication for those who couldn’t
afford it.
“Well over 90 percent of patients who are re-hospitalized have
stopped taking their medication,” Dr. Petrilli added. “The fund has
directly helped with medication. Indirectly, it has helped patients
with compliance so they don’t run the risk of being readmitted.”
Lou’s treatment helped him focus and achieve his goals. He
graduated from the University of Michigan; it took him 10 years
to get a degree, but he persevered. His mother, Nancy Kassab, said,
“It was quite an accomplishment. He also made the dean’s list his
freshman year. He made a great effort toward independence.”
When Lou was well, he worked as a downhill ski instructor at
Schuss Mountain in Michigan and as a bank teller. He also
helped out family members by doing odd jobs and worked
part-time when he could.
“He was always helping other people,” Nancy said. “The recipient
of Lou’s compassion and generosity could be a homeless person
pushing a grocery cart containing all of his earthly possessions,
who would be startled by Lou abruptly stopping his car and
thrusting a $20 bill into his hand.
“He would have been pleased to have known that this fund was
established in his name,” Nancy said.
Many patients have sent thank you notes to Dr. Petrilli for the help
they received through the Kassab fund. One appreciative patient
Lou Kassab had a heart of gold for behavioral medicine
patients who couldn’t afford their medicine and others
who needed help.
who was able to get her life back on track with medication returned
the favor and gave her own gift to the Kassab fund to help others.
“The fund doesn’t scratch the surface of the need,” said Nancy.
“Medicaid recipients have much of their medication paid for. If
patients are employed but without insurance, they must pay for
medication themselves. Many of these patients can’t maintain
steady employment. This population is vast.”
Dr. Petrilli added, “The need for this fund is much greater in this
economy. With high unemployment, people are going without
medication.”
While the Kassab family contributes a significant amount to the
fund annually, other donations are also encouraged to provide
mental health medications for those who can least afford them.
“The fund has directly helped with medication.
Indirectly, it has helped patients with compliance
so they don’t run the risk of being readmitted.”

VOLUNTEER SUPPORT
Providence Hospital Gift Shop creates a
soothing oasis
Main Street, the mall and online retailers can’t fill the gap that the
Our Lady of Providence League Gift Shop serves at Providence
Hospital in Southfield. Renovated and doubled in size, the gift shop
is a special place for visitors, staff and even patients.
“We see the shop as an oasis for visitors, associates and patients,”
said Volunteer Services Manager Kathy Zaguroli. “We have gentle
music, fragrant bath and beauty products, and beautiful giftware.
Seventy-five percent of customers at hospital gift shops are
associates. Our gentle environment is a soothing change of pace
from the rest of the hospital.”
The renovation was made possible by a gift of $750,000 from Our
Lady of Providence League (OLPL), the volunteer group that provides
service and financial support to Providence Hospital. Most of the funds
came from gift shop proceeds. Over the years, funds from the OLPL
Gift Shop have provided more than $6 million to help the hospital
meet some of its special needs for furnishings and equipment.
A gift shop grand opening event was held in late 2009. The gift shop
blossomed in its new 1,600 square-foot space in 2010 by expanding Dr. Michael Wiemann, President, Providence Hospital; Joyce
Redmond, OLPL President; Betty McLaughlin, OLPL Treasurer;
and Patrick Schulte, Providence Health Foundation, at OLPL’s
presentation of funds for the Gift Shop.
its selection of merchandise. The store has added men’s apparel and
hunting/fishing-themed items. The women’s section offers a greater
selection of jewelry, clothing and accessories. Home décor goods,
such as clocks, vases and metal wall art, are popular items.
“The store now features a fitting room, wider aisles (ADA compliant),
beautiful displays and brighter lighting,” said Kathy. “We take pride
in our convenience, personal service and reasonable prices.”
One example of great customer service is delivering gift shop items,
such as flowers, cards and presents, directly to patients in their rooms.
The shop has a small staff, assisted by volunteers (ages 16 to 85) and
managed by an experienced retailer. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
on weekdays and noon to 4 p.m. on weekends.
Guild and Fontbonne support SJH&MC

Planned giving makes a lasting impact
There are many ways to help St. John Providence Health System
(SJPHS) while saving on taxes and enhancing income through a
planned gift. Planned giving includes bequests through will and
trust documents, beneficiary designations within retirement plan
assets and insurance policies, charitable gift annuities and more.
Establishing a planned gift also includes membership in the
Legacy Society, which shows appreciation to our donors whose
support will provide for the future of SJPHS, its hospitals and
programs. If you have remembered us through a planned gift,
please let us know so we can extend our gratitude and
20
recognize you as a member of our Legacy Society. By informing
us of your future gift, we can make certain your gift is properly
documented and directed to benefit the area of your choice.
Planned gift expectancies may also provide special benefits
through our McQuade and Moore Societies, which offer
complimentary donor relations services to assist with managing
your medical appointments and needs. If you wish to establish
a planned gift to help shape the future of St. John Providence
Health System, please call Lawrence Ghannam, JD, Planned Gifts
Director, at 248-465-4502.

Donor walls honor
philanthropic friends
St. John Providence Health System (SJPHS) proudly honors all
of the individuals and organizations whose philanthropic gifts
help provide spiritually centered, holistic care that sustains and
improves the health of the communities we serve with special
attention to the poor and vulnerable.
To celebrate this generous support and encourage other
contributors to join in our Mission, Annual Giving Donor Walls
were recently unveiled at: St. John Hospital and Medical Center
(hall near the cafeteria on the lower level); Providence Hospital
(wall near the cafeteria entrance); Providence Park Hospital
(hall leading to the main information desk from the patient/
visitor entrance); and St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital,
Macomb Center (hall across from the Gift Shop).
Annual contributions of $25 or more in support of a SJPHS
hospital, program or service enable an individual, organization,
foundation or business to be listed on the wall. Updates are
made annually in the spring to show the previous year’s giving.
Stop by any of the sites to see your name or those of other
contributors you may know.
Thank you for supporting SJPHS.
